Plan on roughly 2–3 inches behind the television when a full-motion mount is fully retracted, then reserve the mount’s complete extension—commonly 12–25 inches—in front of the wall. The mount’s published arm depth is only part of the requirement: add the TV’s rear-housing depth, room for HDMI and power plugs, and side clearance for swiveling. The exact minimum is model-specific, so use the installation manual or technical drawing rather than a generic “full-motion” estimate.

What “wall clearance” includes

Clearance is not one measurement. A usable installation has four separate envelopes:

  • Retracted wall profile: the distance from the wall to the mount’s attachment point or the television’s nearest surface when folded flat.
  • Television depth: the thickness of the TV chassis, including any rear contour that projects farther than the VESA mounting area.
  • Connector and cable space: room for HDMI, power, optical, antenna and other plugs to leave the TV without being crushed or bent sharply.
  • Movement envelope: the space in front of and beside the wall needed to pull the arm out, tilt the screen or swivel it toward a viewing position.

A mount advertised as sitting 2.26 inches from the wall does not mean the screen’s front edge is only 2.26 inches away. The television itself and its cables add to that dimension.

How far current full-motion mounts extend

Manufacturer specifications show why one universal clearance number is misleading. Current products advertise maximum extension from 12 to 25 inches.

These are maximum arm movements published by the manufacturers, not a guarantee that every television can reach the stated angle in every room. A wide screen may contact a side wall or cabinet before the arm reaches its rated swivel limit.

How to calculate the clearance your installation needs

1. Find the mount’s folded depth

Look in the technical drawing, specification sheet or installation manual for “profile,” “distance from wall,” “retracted depth” or a similar label. Measure to the part of the mount that projects farthest, not merely to the center of the wall plate. If the manufacturer publishes a range, use the largest value for planning.

Do not assume that every full-motion mount is as slim as the Secura QLF425-B2’s published 2.26-inch profile. The other examples publish extension figures but do not establish a comparable minimum retracted depth in the cited specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Measure the television itself

With the TV on a stable surface, measure from the rear wall-contact area around the VESA holes to the deepest point of the rear housing. Include a protruding power brick, cable cover or built-in stand hardware if it remains installed. Use the actual television, not the nominal screen size, because two TVs with the same diagonal can have different chassis depths.

3. Add connector room

Identify every port you will use and the direction in which its plug exits. Straight HDMI and power connectors usually need more room than low-profile or right-angle plugs. Leave enough space that the arm can fold without forcing a cable into a tight radius. A cable that works while the screen is centered can become stressed when the TV is tilted or swiveled.

A practical planning equation is:

retracted screen-to-wall space = mount folded depth + TV rear depth + connector bend space.

4. Reserve the full forward envelope

If you expect to change viewing angles, clean behind the TV or service a device, reserve the mount’s advertised maximum extension in front of the wall. For a 25-inch model, that means keeping a clear path for the arm and screen to move as far as 25 inches out; a 12-inch model needs a smaller forward zone. Furniture, a mantel, a railing or a door can block the arm even when the wall itself is strong enough.

Planning side clearance for swivel

Swivel clearance is governed by the screen’s width and the distance from the mount’s pivot to the nearest obstruction. Measure horizontally from the pivot point—not from the edge of the wall plate—to a side wall, cabinet, bookcase or door trim.

  1. Mark the proposed pivot location on the wall.
  2. Measure to the closest side obstruction on both sides.
  3. Measure the TV’s actual width, including any side-mounted controls or trim.
  4. Use a cardboard or painter’s-tape outline of the screen at the intended height.
  5. Swing the outline through the angles you need and check for contact with the wall, furniture and adjacent displays.

A mount may advertise up to 84° of swivel, as the Secura QLF425-B2 does, but the television can hit an obstruction first. The usable angle is therefore the smaller of the mount’s mechanical limit and the room’s geometric limit.

Choosing a mount by room layout

Flat wall with open space in front

Prioritize a low retracted profile and adequate cable room. If the screen will normally remain centered, a shorter extension can reduce how far the TV projects into the room while still allowing occasional access behind it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Corner installation

Corner mounts often need more lateral movement than a flat-wall installation. Check both the arm’s extension and the screen’s diagonal sweep. A mount that reaches the desired extension may still leave the corners of a large TV against the adjacent walls.

Over a fireplace or cabinet

Measure the height of the mantel or cabinet and the location of its front edge. The arm must clear that edge while extending, and the TV must be able to tilt without striking the surface below. Keep heat and ventilation requirements in mind for the television itself; a mount cannot correct an unsuitable location.

Near a door or walkway

Map the mount’s maximum extension and the door’s complete swing. A screen that is safe when retracted may obstruct a passage when pulled forward. If people walk close to the wall, treat the extended position as an occasional hazard and choose a layout that keeps the arm out of the traffic path.

Compatibility checks before purchase

Clearance planning is wasted if the mount cannot safely carry the television. Confirm each item below against the mount manual and the TV label:

  • Weight rating: include the TV and any attached soundbar, camera or adapter. Never exceed the mount’s stated limit.
  • Diagonal-size range: size ranges are limits for the tested mounting geometry, not a substitute for checking the TV’s dimensions.
  • VESA pattern: compare the horizontal and vertical hole spacing on the TV with the mount’s supported patterns.
  • Wall construction: verify stud spacing and whether the mount is approved for wood studs, masonry or another surface. Do not rely on drywall anchors for a heavy articulated arm unless the manufacturer explicitly allows that method.
  • Tilt and swivel limits: make sure the adjustment range matches your seating position after accounting for nearby obstructions.
  • Leveling adjustment: a post-installation leveling feature helps correct small mounting or stud-alignment errors, but it does not increase the mount’s weight or movement limits.

Installation sequence that protects your clearance

  1. Locate structural support. Find the studs or identify the approved masonry anchors. Mark their centers at the planned screen height.
  2. Check the complete movement path. Before drilling, hold the wall plate and a cardboard TV outline at the proposed location. Confirm clearance above, below and to both sides.
  3. Install the wall plate level. Use the fasteners and hole pattern specified for your wall type. A level plate makes later adjustments predictable.
  4. Attach the mounting arms to the TV. Use the correct VESA screws and spacers. Screws that are too long can damage the display; screws that are too short may not secure it.
  5. Route cables with slack. Connect cables while the TV is accessible, leave a service loop, and keep the loop clear of hinges and pinch points.
  6. Hang and lock the TV. Engage every safety latch or locking screw before releasing the screen.
  7. Test each motion slowly. Pull the arm out, tilt through its range and swivel in both directions while watching the cables and nearby surfaces.
  8. Recheck fasteners. After the first adjustment, verify that the wall fasteners, arm joints and TV brackets remain tight and that the screen is level.

Cable management and service access

Route cables so they follow the arm’s natural path rather than crossing a hinge. Use the mount’s integrated clips if provided, but do not pack the clips so tightly that the cable cannot move as the arm articulates. Keep power and signal cables from rubbing against sharp metal edges.

Plan where devices will sit when the TV is fully extended. A streaming box or game console with a short lead can pull on its port when the screen moves. Leave enough length to reach the farthest intended position, then secure the excess so it cannot hang into the arm mechanism.

Before final tightening, pull the screen forward far enough to reach every connector you may need to replace. Service access is one reason to preserve the mount’s full extension rather than placing furniture directly in front of the wall.

Common clearance mistakes and fixes

Using only the mount’s advertised profile

Symptom: the TV sits farther out than expected or a plug presses against the wall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: add the TV chassis depth and connector bend space to the mount’s folded depth. Re-route cables or use approved low-profile connectors only after confirming they fit the TV and maintain a safe bend radius.

Planning from the wall plate instead of the pivot

Symptom: the screen hits a side wall before reaching the desired viewing angle.

Fix: measure side clearance from the arm’s pivot and test with a full-size outline of the actual TV.

Ignoring the extended position

Symptom: the arm collides with a cabinet, door or walkway when pulled out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: mark the manufacturer’s maximum extension on the floor or wall and keep that path clear, or choose a mount with a shorter published extension.

Assuming a larger size rating guarantees movement

Symptom: the mount supports the TV’s weight but cannot swivel as expected.

Fix: check the screen’s actual width, VESA location and room geometry. Size and weight ratings do not override a physical obstruction.

Leaving no adjustment margin

Symptom: the TV is level only when the arm is in one position, or cables become taut during adjustment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: use the mount’s leveling feature, loosen and retighten joints according to the manual, and add a controlled cable loop before securing the final position.

A practical decision rule

Choose the mount only after writing down four measurements: folded mount depth, TV rear depth, connector space and the required forward extension. Then verify the pivot-to-obstruction distances on both sides. If any measurement is uncertain, use the manufacturer’s technical drawing or installation manual for that model and plan with extra room rather than designing to the absolute minimum.

For a quick comparison, the cited products offer 12, 15, 18, 22 or 25 inches of extension. The right number is the shortest extension that still reaches your seating angle and service position without forcing the screen into furniture, a door path or a cable-bending limit.
