Choose a USB-C Power Delivery (USB PD) charger that meets the wattage recommended for your exact laptop model, and verify that the laptop’s USB-C port accepts charging and the cable supports that power level. There is no single wattage that suits every laptop: manufacturer recommendations vary by model and generation. USB PD’s maximum capability of 240W is a standard limit, not a recommendation for what your laptop needs.
How to find the right wattage for your laptop
- Identify the exact model and generation. Check the laptop’s model information, then look up its charging guidance on the manufacturer’s support page or in its adapter specifications.
- Confirm that the port supports charging. USB-C is a connector type, not a promise that a port accepts power. Check the documentation for the particular laptop and port.
- Choose a USB PD charger that meets the recommendation. Compare the output available from the charger’s port—not just its headline maximum—with the laptop’s recommended wattage. For a multiport charger, check the official specifications or label to see how much output remains available when other devices are connected.
- Use a suitably rated USB-C cable. Check the cable’s power capability marking and make sure it is rated for the intended power. Charging capability is separate from data speed and other cable features.
Also note whether the manufacturer distinguishes a minimum wattage from a fast-charging recommendation. A charger can meet a minimum without providing the maker’s suggested fast-charging experience.
Why there is no universal laptop charging wattage
Requirements differ even within a product family. For example, Microsoft’s Surface Laptop charging table lists 39W or 45W minimums for several named recent models and 60W for fast charging on many of them; other versions in the same table use 60W. For Surface Laptop Studio 2, Microsoft lists 95W, or 120W for the dGPU configuration. These figures apply to the specified models, not to laptops as a class. Microsoft’s Surface charging requirements
Apple likewise gives recommendations by Mac model and generation. Its guidance includes 30W, 35W, 67W, and 70W adapter examples for MacBook Air models introduced from 2022 onward. These examples show why “65W for every laptop” or another blanket recommendation is unreliable. Look up your own model rather than choosing from a broad category such as laptop size or brand family.
What USB-C, USB PD, and 240W do—and do not—tell you
USB-C describes the connector. USB Power Delivery is a separate power-delivery protocol. A USB-C port or cable by itself does not establish that a laptop can charge through that port, that a charger supports USB PD, or how much power the charging setup can deliver. USB PD can support power levels up to 240W. USB-IF’s description of that capability explains the standard’s ceiling; it does not mean a laptop needs 240W or will draw that amount. Can you use a lower- or higher-wattage charger?
When the charger is lower wattage
The outcome depends on the laptop. Apple says supported USB-C-charging Macs can use USB PD adapters with lower or higher wattage than the recommendation, while advising users to meet the model’s minimum for the best charging experience. Microsoft warns that a lower-wattage Surface charger may charge slowly or may not charge the device at all, and will not fast-charge it. When the charger is higher wattage
Apple says its USB-C-charging Macs can use higher-wattage USB PD adapters. Treat that as guidance for the supported Macs covered by Apple’s documentation, not as a blanket statement about every laptop. What to check if charging is slow or the battery drains
If the laptop charges slowly—or the battery continues to drain during heavy use—verify the complete charging setup before concluding that a component is defective. This checklist is practical troubleshooting based on manufacturer and standards guidance, not a tested diagnosis.

- Verify that the specific USB-C port accepts charging; some USB-C ports do not receive power.
- Check the charger’s output at the port in use, especially if other devices share a multiport charger.
- Make sure the USB-C cable is rated for the intended power.
- Recheck whether the manufacturer specifies separate minimum and fast-charging wattages.
