For a Mac mini bought mainly to run local AI, 24GB of unified memory is the best default. It leaves useful room for model weights, longer prompts, macOS and ordinary applications without moving immediately to the larger M4 Pro configurations. Choose 16GB for small models and light experimentation; choose 32GB if you expect heavier multitasking or want to try selected 20B–30B-class models. Choose 48GB or 64GB only when long context, vision workloads, concurrent applications or larger experiments justify the cost and higher-power M4 Pro tier.

Quick answer by memory tier

The right capacity depends on the largest model and the way you will use it, not simply on the model’s parameter count or download size. These are practical planning ranges rather than hard compatibility limits.

Unified memory Chip configuration Practical model range Best fit Main limitation
16GB M4 About 1B–8B models Chat, summaries, small coding tasks and learning local inference Moderate context, few background applications and a higher chance of swap under load
24GB M4 or M4 Pro About 8B–14B models; 12B models are feasible with controlled context Most local-AI buyers, coding assistance and regular multitasking Long context, several applications or larger models can still exhaust headroom
32GB M4 Selected 20B–30B-class experiments, plus smaller models with more context Heavier experimentation and more simultaneous applications It is not a guarantee that every 27B or 30B model will feel comfortable
48GB M4 Pro Larger experiments than the M4 tiers, subject to model and runtime Longer context, vision workloads and concurrent applications Still requires an individual check for model file, KV cache and context use
64GB M4 Pro The largest practical tier in the 2024 Mac mini range Maximum headroom for local experiments on this product line It does not make every 70B model practical

Apple’s 2024 Mac mini specification lists 16GB, 24GB and 32GB options for M4, and 24GB, 48GB and 64GB options for M4 Pro. Memory is soldered unified memory, so it cannot be upgraded after purchase. Select the capacity for the largest workload you realistically expect rather than the smallest model you can run today.

Why unified memory changes local-AI sizing

A Mac mini’s CPU, GPU, macOS, inference runtime and applications share one memory pool. A discrete-GPU desktop can reserve system RAM and graphics memory separately; a Mac mini cannot. Every byte used by a browser, Docker container, editor, local web interface or file cache competes with inference for the same pool.

Model weights are only the first requirement. During generation, the runtime also allocates a key-value (KV) cache that grows with context length. A short one-turn prompt and a long coding conversation using the same model can therefore have very different memory footprints. Runtime overhead, quantization format, model architecture and GPU allocation also affect the result. Two models with the same parameter count are not guaranteed to use the same amount of memory.

The practical rule is to leave headroom. A model that technically loads while macOS is already under pressure may begin swapping to storage. It can still produce an answer, but token generation and prompt processing can become slow, and multi-turn conversations may degrade further as the cache grows.

What each memory tier can realistically do

16GB: an entry point for small models

A 16GB M4 Mac mini is appropriate when local AI means compact chat models, summaries, simple extraction, lightweight coding help or learning how local inference works. Current guidance places this tier around 1B–8B models.

Keep context moderate and close unused applications before loading a model. A dated lab table measured approximately 29 tokens per second for a 7B model and 28.8 tokens per second for an 8B model on a 16GB test unit. Those are Macstripe’s measurements on its particular hardware, software and model setup; they are not a promise for every 16GB Mac mini, runtime or quantization.

Sixteen gigabytes becomes restrictive when you keep many browser tabs open, run a development stack, use a graphical model manager and ask for long conversations at the same time. It can work, but the margin for mistakes is small.

24GB: the sensible default

Twenty-four gigabytes is the practical sweet spot for most buyers. It gives an 8B–14B working range in current guidance, with 12B models feasible when context and background applications are controlled. It also leaves more room for a code editor, terminal, browser and local interface than the 16GB model.

Macstripe’s dated lab table recorded approximately 15.1 tokens per second for a 14B model and 51.1 tokens per second for a 7B model on its 24GB test unit. Treat both figures as source-specific observations, not standardized benchmarks. A different model tag, quantization level, context setting or runtime can change throughput substantially.

Choose 24GB if you want one Mac mini that can handle everyday local chat and coding without constantly policing every open application. It is also the safer choice when you are unsure whether your normal workload will remain at 7B–8B size.

32GB: useful headroom for larger experiments

Thirty-two gigabytes makes selected 20B–30B-class experiments more realistic and provides additional space for long prompts, browser tabs, development tools and local services. Start with a short context, load the exact quantized model you intend to use and watch memory pressure before assuming it will remain comfortable.

“Can it run a 27B model?” has no universal yes-or-no answer. The model’s quantization, architecture, context length and runtime determine whether it fits, while the rest of your desktop determines whether it remains responsive. A 32GB M4 should be viewed as an experimentation tier, not a guarantee of smooth 27B or 30B performance.

48GB or 64GB: when the M4 Pro tiers make sense

The M4 Pro configurations are aimed at users who know they need more than ordinary single-model chat. Longer context windows, vision-language workloads, concurrent applications and larger local-model experiments can justify 48GB or 64GB.

They still do not make every 70B model practical. Before buying, check the specific model file, quantization, expected KV-cache growth and runtime requirements. A large capacity can prevent an immediate out-of-memory failure while leaving generation too slow for your workflow, so capacity and usable speed are separate decisions.

Memory bandwidth and chip choice

Apple lists 120GB/s of memory bandwidth for M4 and 273GB/s for M4 Pro in the 2024 Mac mini specifications. Bandwidth affects how quickly the chip can move data during inference, but it does not replace capacity. A fast memory subsystem cannot load a model whose weights, cache and operating-system overhead exceed the available pool.

Conversely, extra capacity does not guarantee a particular tokens-per-second result. The model architecture, quantization, context setting and runtime all matter. Think of capacity as the ability to fit the workload and bandwidth as one factor influencing how efficiently the fitted workload runs.

Context length, quantization and background apps

Context length

Long context is one of the easiest ways to turn a model that loaded successfully into a model that causes pressure later. The KV cache grows as the conversation, source files or retrieved documents grow. If a model behaves well for a short prompt but slows after a lengthy coding session, reduce the context limit or start a fresh conversation before concluding that the Mac mini is incompatible.

Quantization

Quantization stores weights with fewer bits, reducing memory use compared with a full-precision version. The trade-off can include quality changes, different speed and compatibility differences between runtimes. Compare the exact model tag and quantization you plan to use; “14B model” alone is not enough information to predict memory behavior.

macOS and applications

macOS needs memory even when no AI application is visible. Browsers, code editors, containers, databases, local web interfaces and file indexing add to the shared pool. On a 16GB machine, closing unused applications may determine whether a model runs without swap. On 24GB or 32GB, the same housekeeping preserves responsiveness during longer sessions.

How to choose for common workloads

Occasional chat and summaries

Choose 16GB if you will use small models, keep prompts moderate and do not need several heavy applications open. Choose 24GB if you want freedom to switch between a browser, notes and a local chat interface without treating every tab as a memory decision.

Local coding assistance

For coding, the editor, language server, build tools, repository index and browser all consume memory alongside the model. Twenty-four gigabytes is the better baseline for a general development machine. Move to 32GB when you routinely run containers, databases, multiple projects or larger context windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Experimenting with 20B–30B models

Start at 32GB, use a quantized model and keep context short while measuring actual pressure. If your experiments involve vision inputs, several services or long documents, 48GB may be more appropriate. Neither tier should be treated as an unconditional promise for every model in that parameter range.

Long-context or multimodal work

Long documents, image inputs and concurrent model services increase memory demand beyond a simple chat session. The 48GB and 64GB M4 Pro options provide the most headroom available in the 2024 Mac mini lineup, but you should still validate each model’s requirements and expected context before purchase.

Using Ollama or MLX on a Mac mini

Ollama is a practical local runtime for command-line automation and a localhost API. MLX is another option designed around Apple silicon. Whichever runtime you choose, the model tag, quantization and context setting are part of the specification of your workload.

Local software does not automatically mean local inference. A graphical interface can send requests to a cloud model even when the interface itself is installed on your Mac. If privacy is a reason for choosing local AI, verify the selected model provider, endpoint and network behavior before entering sensitive material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical sizing and verification procedure

  1. Define the largest real workload. Write down the biggest model class, context length, vision requirement and number of applications you expect to use together. Do not size only for a small model you may outgrow.
  2. Choose the memory tier with headroom. Use 16GB for small-model learning, 24GB for the broadest everyday use, 32GB for larger experiments, and 48GB or 64GB for sustained high-demand work.
  3. Install the intended runtime and exact model tag. Test the same quantization and context setting you will use in practice. Substituting a smaller demonstration model can hide the real requirement.
  4. Begin with a short context. Confirm that the model loads and generates normally before increasing the context limit or adding long documents.
  5. Open your normal applications. Re-test with the browser, editor, containers and local interface that will be running during actual work.
  6. Watch memory pressure and swap. macOS Activity Monitor shows Memory Pressure and swap use. Rising pressure, heavy swap or dramatic slowdowns indicate that the workload needs less context, fewer simultaneous applications or a larger memory tier.
  7. Test a multi-turn session. A model can pass a one-prompt test and fail to remain responsive after the KV cache grows. Continue a realistic conversation or coding task long enough to expose that behavior.

Performance evidence and how to interpret it

The following measurements come from a dated Macstripe lab table. They are useful as directional evidence, but the tested hardware, software versions, model files and settings are not universal standards.

Test memory Model Reported generation speed How to use the figure
16GB 7B Approximately 29 tokens/second Macstripe result on its test unit; not a guarantee for all 7B models
16GB 8B Approximately 28.8 tokens/second Macstripe result on its test unit; settings and runtime affect comparability
24GB 14B Approximately 15.1 tokens/second Macstripe result on its test unit; larger context can reduce usable speed
24GB 7B Approximately 51.1 tokens/second Macstripe result on its test unit; do not generalize to every quantization

Token speed is only one part of the experience. Prompt processing, first-token delay, sustained generation, context growth and system responsiveness may matter more than a peak number in a short benchmark.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

  • Buying 16GB solely because a small model fits: Leave room for macOS, context growth and the applications you actually use.
  • Using parameter count as the only sizing rule: Check quantization, architecture, KV-cache behavior and context length.
  • Assuming 32GB guarantees a 27B or 30B model: Treat those classes as experiments and validate the exact model.
  • Confusing storage with memory: An external SSD can store model files, but it does not increase unified memory available during inference.
  • Ignoring swap: A model that loads while swapping heavily may be technically compatible but practically frustrating. Reduce context or background load, or move to a larger tier.
  • Assuming a local interface is privacy-safe: Confirm that inference uses a local runtime and local model rather than a cloud endpoint.
  • Planning to upgrade later: Unified memory is fixed at purchase, so buy for the largest workload you realistically expect during the Mac mini’s useful life.

Bottom-line buying decision

Buy the 16GB M4 Mac mini when your local-AI plan is limited to small models, moderate prompts and light multitasking. Buy 24GB for the most balanced combination of model range, everyday responsiveness and future flexibility. Move to 32GB when larger experiments or a busy development desktop are central to your work. Select 48GB or 64GB M4 Pro only for clearly demanding context, vision, concurrency or model-size requirements—and verify the exact workload rather than assuming the extra capacity solves every performance problem.
