There is no fixed visitor limit for WordPress. A well-cached site on one properly sized server can serve hundreds of thousands or even several million anonymous pageviews per month, while a small site with uncached, logged-in or WooCommerce requests can run out of capacity with far fewer visitors. The deciding factors are uncached requests per second, PHP worker count, response time, memory, database load and cache-hit rate—not the number of WordPress posts or a headline monthly-visitor figure.

What actually determines WordPress capacity

Every request follows a path through your web server, cache, PHP runtime and database. A fully cached public page can be returned without starting PHP or querying WordPress. An uncached request must occupy a PHP worker until WordPress finishes rendering it. When all workers are busy, new requests queue; if the queue grows beyond the server or proxy timeout, visitors see slow pages or a 503 Service Unavailable response.

That is why two sites with the same 100,000 monthly visitors can have radically different limits. A news site serving anonymous readers from a warm page cache may use very little CPU. A membership site with personalized dashboards, searches and checkout requests may send nearly every visit through PHP and the database.

The basic capacity equation

For uncached traffic, a useful first approximation is:

Workers required ≈ uncached requests per second × average uncached response time in seconds.

For example, four PHP workers handling requests that each take 400 milliseconds (0.4 seconds) have a theoretical ceiling of about 10 uncached requests per second (4 ÷ 0.4). Queueing begins before that point, and real sites need headroom for database bursts, background jobs and slow outliers, so treat 10 requests per second as an upper-bound calculation rather than a safe operating target.

Monthly pageviews do not convert directly to requests per second. A month of evenly distributed traffic is much easier than the same total arriving during a product launch. Use your busiest five-minute or one-minute interval when sizing, and separate cached from uncached requests.

Page caching is the largest capacity lever

Page caching stores the generated HTML for an anonymous URL. On a cache hit, the web server or edge layer can deliver that HTML without invoking PHP. This prevents public traffic from consuming PHP workers and usually reduces database activity as well.

What should be cached

  • Public posts, pages, category archives and other identical content for anonymous visitors.
  • Static assets such as images, style sheets, JavaScript and fonts, ideally delivered through a content-delivery network (CDN).
  • Server-level or reverse-proxy cache in addition to, or instead of, a PHP-based page-cache plugin when your host supports it.

What normally bypasses the page cache

  • Logged-in pages that contain a user name, account data or personalized controls.
  • Cart, checkout, account and order pages in WooCommerce.
  • Search results, form submissions, preview screens and requests that set private cookies.

Measure the cache-hit ratio rather than assuming it is high. A site reporting 95 percent cache hits may still struggle if the remaining five percent contains expensive account, search or checkout requests. Purge rules also matter: purging the entire cache after every edit can create a sudden “cache cold” wave in which all visitors reach PHP at once.

How many visitors can common configurations handle?

Published hosting guides provide planning ranges, not guarantees. They rarely disclose the theme, plugins, database queries, traffic burst, geographic distribution or test method behind a number. Use the following figures as starting points and validate them with your own measurements.

Workload or setup Planning figure Important qualification
1 GB VPS, three PHP workers and page caching About 10,000–30,000 pageviews per month Rough 2026 hosting estimate; assumes a mostly cacheable site.
Up to 20,000 visits per month About 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM with page caching Vendor tier estimate; burst behavior and plugins can change the result.
20,000–100,000 visits per month About 4 vCPU and 4–8 GB RAM, with Redis object caching Planning tier, not a performance guarantee.
More than 100,000 visits per month Add a CDN and review application and database bottlenecks The threshold is a guideline; logged-in traffic can require scaling much earlier.
Single tuned server with server cache and CDN About 1–5 million monthly pageviews Estimate for mostly anonymous, cacheable traffic; heavy logged-in activity reaches limits at a fraction of this.

Another commonly cited threshold is that ordinary shared or managed hosting is usually adequate below roughly 50,000 monthly visits when page caching is configured. Between about 50,000 and 500,000 visits, server-level caching, a CDN and a current PHP release become increasingly important. These are workload bands, not promises that a particular plan will deliver a specified number of visitors.

Why logged-in and WooCommerce sites hit limits sooner

Personalized pages cannot be served as one shared HTML object. Each request may execute authentication checks, load user metadata, query orders or calculate prices and stock. WooCommerce also creates frequent cart and session requests, many of which bypass a page cache.

A 2026 hosting estimate for a store receiving more than 50,000 visitors per day calls for at least 8 GB of RAM, 20 or more PHP workers and object caching. Treat that as a sizing example, not a universal requirement: a simple catalog with aggressive edge caching may need less, while complex subscriptions, search and promotions may need more.

Reduce work per dynamic request

  • Keep cart, checkout and account URLs excluded from full-page caching, but cache every safe public product and category page.
  • Use persistent object caching for repeated database reads, while testing invalidation so customers do not see stale prices or stock.
  • Audit plugins that add queries, remote API calls or scheduled jobs to every request.
  • Move image resizing, email sending, imports and other long tasks to background jobs where possible.

Memory, PHP workers and the official baseline

RAM limits how many PHP workers your server can run simultaneously. A hosting estimate puts a typical WordPress request at roughly 40–80 MB per worker. On a 2 GB server, the operating system and database consume part of the memory, leaving room for approximately 20–25 workers in that estimate. A plugin that raises per-request memory can reduce that count sharply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Make WordPress Hosting Handbook lists these practical PHP memory tiers:

  • 128 MB: minimum for a basic, “vanilla” WordPress installation.
  • 256 MB: recommended for a typical production site with several plugins.
  • 512 MB or more: appropriate for WooCommerce, page builders, multilingual sites and import/export workloads.

The WordPress requirements page recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. The Hosting Handbook recommends PHP 8.4 or later for production and notes that WordPress 7.1 requires PHP 7.4 or later. These statements describe compatibility and operational guidance, not a visitor capacity. Choose a currently supported PHP release offered by your host and test themes and plugins before changing versions.

Apache HTTP Server 2.4 and nginx are the common web-server choices. Redis, Memcached and APCu are optional caching extensions. WordPress memory constants such as WP_MEMORY_LIMIT and WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT do not override a host’s runtime ceiling: the effective memory_limit set by PHP is the real cap. Confirm it in your hosting panel or a controlled diagnostic rather than assuming a value in wp-config.php took effect.

A measurement method you can repeat

  1. Record traffic shape. From analytics and server logs, note requests per second during your busiest periods, not only monthly totals. Separate anonymous, logged-in and bot traffic.
  2. Measure cache hits. Use your host, reverse proxy or cache-plugin logs to obtain the hit ratio and the number of misses per second. Verify that logged-in and cart requests are intentionally bypassing the cache.
  3. Measure uncached latency. Record average and high-percentile response times for representative uncached URLs. Averages hide slow database queries; include the 95th or 99th percentile if your monitoring provides it.
  4. Estimate worker demand. Multiply uncached requests per second by response time in seconds. Compare the result with the active PHP-worker limit, leaving safety headroom for bursts.
  5. Check memory per worker. Observe resident memory while the site handles realistic concurrency. Confirm that the operating system, database, web server and cron jobs still have room.
  6. Load-test gradually. Increase concurrency in steps, warm the cache, then test cache misses and logged-in flows separately. Stop when latency, error rate, CPU, database connections or memory becomes unsafe.
  7. Set alerts. Monitor PHP worker saturation, 5xx responses, cache-hit ratio, database slow queries, RAM, swap, disk I/O and queue time. Alerts let you act before visitors experience an outage.

Scaling options when traffic grows

Improve efficiency before adding hardware

  • Upgrade old PHP versions, themes and plugins after compatibility testing.
  • Remove unused plugins and identify slow queries with application and database profiling.
  • Enable full-page caching for every safe anonymous route and use long-lived browser and CDN caching for static files.
  • Optimize images and defer noncritical scripts so each request transfers less data.
  • Schedule backups, updates and imports outside peak periods.

Add capacity in the right layer

More PHP workers help only when CPU and RAM can sustain them. Adding workers to a memory-starved server can trigger swapping and make response times worse. More CPU helps compute-heavy pages, while faster storage and database tuning help query- or I/O-bound workloads. A CDN reduces origin bandwidth and serves static or cached HTML closer to readers, but it does not fix an expensive uncached checkout request.

For larger sites, separate responsibilities: put a CDN and reverse proxy in front, run the web/PHP tier with enough memory, use persistent object caching, and move the database to appropriately sized storage. Horizontal scaling requires shared uploads, consistent cache invalidation and session handling; simply cloning a server without those pieces can produce stale content or lost sessions.

Diagnosing a WordPress 503 during a traffic spike

A 503 usually means the origin could not serve the request in time. Worker exhaustion is a common cause, but it is not the only one.

  1. Check whether PHP workers are all busy and whether requests are queued.
  2. Review web-server and PHP error logs for upstream timeouts, fatal errors and memory exhaustion.
  3. Check RAM and swap. If the server is swapping, reduce concurrency or add memory before increasing worker counts.
  4. Inspect database connections, slow queries and locked tables.
  5. Look for a cache purge, plugin update, backup or import that coincided with the spike.
  6. Temporarily serve a static maintenance response or enable a safe emergency cache while you address the bottleneck.
  7. Retest the exact URL types that failed, including logged-in and checkout paths; a cached homepage test alone can hide the problem.

Choosing hosting for your workload

Compare infrastructure capabilities rather than advertised visitor counts. Ask these questions before migrating:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How many concurrent PHP workers are included, and can the limit be raised without moving to a different architecture?
  • How much RAM is guaranteed, and what is the host’s actual PHP memory_limit?
  • Is page caching handled at the server or reverse-proxy layer, and can you configure exclusions for accounts, carts and checkout?
  • Is a CDN available, and does it support purging the specific URLs you change?
  • Which supported PHP, database and HTTPS versions are available?
  • Can the platform provide Redis, Memcached or another persistent object cache?
  • Are CPU, database connections, disk I/O, bandwidth or cron jobs subject to separate caps?
  • What monitoring and logs are available when a 503 occurs?

The safest answer to “How much traffic can my WordPress site handle?” is a measured operating envelope: a cache-hit target, a maximum uncached requests-per-second rate, acceptable latency percentiles and a tested concurrency limit for logged-in or commerce flows. Recheck that envelope after major plugin, theme, PHP, database or traffic-pattern changes.
