There is no universal amount of extra free space Sony says to reserve for every large PS5 game. Check the current space requirement for the specific game on your console or its store listing, and treat that figure as the starting point. Leaving additional room for updates and other console data is sensible, but any extra buffer is practical advice—not an official Sony rule.
Start with the game’s current space requirement
Game sizes vary by title and can change as updates arrive, so a rule such as “always leave 100 GB free” is not supported by Sony’s storage guidance. The useful number is the current requirement displayed for the game you want to install. Check the console or the game’s store listing rather than relying on an older estimate.
On the PS5, check your available space at Settings > Storage. Compare that amount with the game’s displayed requirement. If the console has less available space than the game requires, make room before trying to install it. If it has at least that amount, the displayed requirement is the minimum to use for planning; it does not establish an additional Sony-prescribed buffer.

Having more free space may be helpful because requirements can change with updates and the console also holds other data, but Sony does not specify how many additional gigabytes to reserve in this example—or for large games generally.

Why a fixed free-space target is unreliable
A fixed number can mislead in either direction: it may be more space than one game needs, or less than another game’s current requirement. The relevant figure is tied to the particular title and can change. That makes a current on-console or store-listed requirement more useful than a broad estimate for “a large game.”
Keep two questions separate when planning:
- Can this game fit now? Compare its current displayed requirement with the free space shown under Settings > Storage.
- How much extra room should I keep? Sony’s reviewed storage guidance does not set a universal answer. Keeping additional room is a practical choice, not a stated compatibility requirement.
If the game’s displayed requirement changes later, check the available space again before relying on an earlier estimate. Avoid treating a number from a past installation, an old store listing, or another game as a permanent target for the console.

What to do when the PS5 says there is not enough space
First confirm the current available space at Settings > Storage. If it is below the game’s displayed requirement, choose how to make room based on whether you want to keep the game data readily playable, archive it, or add storage capacity.
- Review what is using storage. Open Settings > Storage and check the console’s available space.
- Delete games or applications you no longer need installed. Sony says purchased content can be downloaded again later from your game library, so deleting an installed game need not mean losing access to that purchase.
- Consider USB extended storage for PS5 game data you want to keep but are not playing. A PS5 game stored on USB must be moved back to console storage or M.2 storage before you can play it.
- Consider a compatible M.2 SSD if you regularly run short of space. Unlike USB extended storage for PS5 games, a compatible M.2 drive can store and run PS5 games.
- Check available space again and compare it with the title’s current requirement before installing.
The right choice depends on whether this is a one-time cleanup or a recurring shortage. Deleting an unwanted game costs nothing, but you will need to reinstall it if you want to play it later. USB extended storage helps keep PS5 game data without using the same console storage, but it is an archive for those games rather than a place to play them from. An M.2 SSD adds internal capacity for playing PS5 games from that storage.

Choose between deleting, USB storage, and an M.2 SSD
| Option | Can you play a PS5 game from it? | Extra hardware | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete games or applications | No; the deleted game must be installed again to play. | No. | A one-time cleanup, especially when you are finished with games currently installed. |
| USB extended storage | No. Move PS5 game data back to console or M.2 storage before playing. | Yes, a USB extended-storage drive. | Keeping PS5 game data available to move back later, rather than playing it directly from USB. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | Yes. It can store and run PS5 games. | Yes, a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with the required cooling structure. | Recurring storage shortages when you want more space for games you can play from that storage. |
These options solve different problems. Deletion is the no-cost way to reclaim space when you can redownload a game later. USB is useful when you want to retain PS5 game data but do not need to launch it from that drive. M.2 expansion is the direct option when you want added capacity that can also run PS5 games.
USB extended storage: useful for archiving, not playing PS5 games
Sony’s USB extended-storage support page lists a capacity range of 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum. Those are supported capacity figures, not a recommendation for how much free console space to leave before installing a particular game. The key limitation for PS5 games is where they can be played: game data on USB must be moved back to console storage or M.2 storage first.

This makes USB extended storage a fit for games you want to keep without leaving them installed in the console’s playable storage. It does not remove the need to have room on console or M.2 storage when you want to play one of those PS5 games. If your aim is to launch games directly from added storage, compare this option with M.2 expansion instead.
M.2 expansion: check compatibility before buying
Sony’s M.2 guidance describes an M.2 NVMe SSD using PCIe Gen4 x4, recommends sequential read speed of at least 5500 MB/s, and requires an effective cooling structure. Sony’s US storage-solutions page lists M.2 expansion capacity of up to 8 TB. These are product compatibility and capacity details; they do not define a free-space buffer for an individual game.

Drive fit is more than the SSD’s advertised capacity or speed. Sony lists supported form factors and size limits that include the heatsink, so check the current official requirements and the particular drive’s cooling dimensions before purchase. Sony also cautions that meeting the listed specifications does not guarantee every third-party drive will work. Do not assume that a drive fits just because its bare SSD dimensions look suitable.
- Confirm that the drive is an M.2 NVMe SSD with PCIe Gen4 x4.
- Compare its speed with Sony’s recommendation of at least 5500 MB/s sequential read speed.
- Verify that it has an effective cooling structure.
- Check the drive and heatsink dimensions against Sony’s current form-factor and size limits.
- Use Sony’s latest M.2 installation and compatibility guidance before choosing a drive.
If you only need to make room for one installation, deleting content or using an existing USB extended-storage drive may be more proportionate than buying internal expansion. If you repeatedly run out of space and want to play PS5 games from the extra capacity, a compatible M.2 SSD addresses that recurring need.
A practical way to decide how much to leave free
Use the game’s current displayed requirement as the minimum planning figure, then decide whether you want additional headroom for your own use. There is no official universal amount to add to that number. The more often you install games or respond to new updates, the more useful it may be to avoid filling storage right to the edge—but that is a personal buffer, not a number Sony mandates.

- Installing one specific game: Check its current requirement and compare it with Settings > Storage.
- Short by a small amount: Delete a game or application you do not currently need, or move PS5 game data to USB if you accept that it must be moved back before play.
- Short on space repeatedly: Consider a compatible M.2 SSD if you want added storage from which PS5 games can run.
- Planning around an old size estimate: Recheck the game’s current listing or on-console requirement because title requirements can change as updates arrive.
