Pokémon Pokopia requires 6.8 GB of storage on Nintendo Switch 2, according to Nintendo’s 2026 eShop listings. Keep more than 6.8 GB free because the console may need additional working space to install the game, and later updates can require further room. If your internal storage is too full, Nintendo advises deleting software you no longer need or adding a compatible microSD Express card. The current Nintendo listings reviewed for this game identify Nintendo Switch 2, not the original Nintendo Switch, as the supported platform.
The short answer: Pokopia needs 6.8 GB
Nintendo lists Pokémon Pokopia at 6.8 GB on its 2026 Nintendo Switch 2 eShop pages, including the United Kingdom, New Zealand and United States listings. That figure is the official required download or file size currently shown for the game.
Think of 6.8 GB as the minimum published requirement, not the amount of free space you should see before pressing Download. Nintendo warns that “More or less free space than is indicated here may be required to install products that have been downloaded to the console.” Installation can require temporary working space, and an update may need to be downloaded after the original game is installed.

- Published game size: 6.8 GB.
- Platform shown by the reviewed listings: Nintendo Switch 2.
- Recommended preparation: leave more than 6.8 GB available rather than targeting the exact number.

What the 6.8 GB figure actually tells you
It is the current listed file size
The number is the storage figure Nintendo publishes for the downloadable version of Pokopia. It gives you a practical threshold for planning, but it is not a promise that every installation will consume exactly 6.8 GB at every stage. Console software may need temporary space while files are unpacked, checked and written to storage.
Installation overhead is separate from the headline number
A console that reports only 6.8 GB free may still reject the download because it needs room to perform the installation. Nintendo’s notice deliberately says that more or less free space may be required. The safest approach is to create a cushion above the listed size instead of deleting files only after the installation has already failed.
Updates can change the amount of space you need
The game’s initial listing is not a permanent upper limit. Nintendo’s support information records a software update released on 7 September 2026 and tells players to ensure that enough space is available for the update download. A future patch can increase the installed footprint or require temporary space during updating, even if the original game fit comfortably.
Will Pokémon Pokopia fit on your Switch 2?
It will fit if the console has enough free storage for the 6.8 GB listing, the installation process and any update that is waiting to download. Because the exact overhead is not stated, do not treat 6.8 GB as a precise “safe” free-space target.

Check your available storage before downloading
- Open System Settings on Nintendo Switch 2.
- Open the console’s storage or data-management screen and note the free space shown for internal storage.
- Compare that free-space figure with the 6.8 GB Pokopia listing, leaving additional room for installation activity and updates.
- If the remaining space is tight, remove or archive software you no longer use before starting the download.
- Return to the eShop listing after major patches or downloadable content announcements and check whether the displayed requirement has changed.
The free-space number is more useful than the console’s total advertised capacity because system data, screenshots, video captures, save-related data and other installed games already consume part of the drive.
Examples of common situations
- More than 6.8 GB free with a comfortable cushion: the download is likely to be straightforward, although an update can still require extra room.
- Exactly 6.8 GB free: this is risky because Nintendo says installation may require more space than the displayed figure.
- Less than 6.8 GB free: make space or use Nintendo’s supported expansion method before downloading.
- Enough room for Pokopia but not for your next games: consider your whole library, not just this one installation.
Do you need an SD card for Pokopia?
No. You do not need an expansion card if your Switch 2 has sufficient internal free space. If internal storage is insufficient, Nintendo’s eShop guidance points to a microSD Express card for Switch 2 storage expansion.
A microSD Express card can provide a separate location for downloaded games and updates, allowing you to keep more software installed without removing titles from the console’s internal storage. The card’s capacity should exceed the 6.8 GB Pokopia requirement and leave room for the rest of your library. The right capacity therefore depends on how many other games you plan to keep installed.

Do not assume that any older microSD card is the correct choice. Nintendo specifically identifies microSD Express for Switch 2 in the storage guidance associated with the eShop listing. Check the packaging and product documentation for explicit Nintendo Switch 2 and microSD Express compatibility before buying. A card that merely says “microSD” without the Express designation should not be treated as confirmed for this use.

Pokopia storage options compared
The following comparison focuses on the choices relevant to installing this game. Nintendo does not state a universal card capacity, price, performance rating or warranty term for every product, so those details depend on the specific card and retailer.
| Storage option | How it handles Pokopia | Compatibility information | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 internal storage | Stores the 6.8 GB installation and its updates directly on the console. | Built into every Switch 2; available space varies with your existing software and data. | Free space shown in System Settings, plus installation headroom. |
| microSD Express card | Adds capacity for Pokopia, updates and other downloadable games. | Nintendo’s Switch 2 guidance identifies the microSD Express standard. | Usable capacity after formatting, explicit Express compatibility and sufficient room for your library. |
| Deleting or archiving software | Creates internal free space without purchasing hardware. | Available through the console’s data-management tools. | Whether you still need the title installed and whether you have a way to download it again later. |
For this game alone, the key threshold is more than 6.8 GB plus overhead. For a large library, compare the total space needed by all the games and updates you intend to keep, rather than selecting a card based only on Pokopia.
How to make room when the download will not start
Remove software you no longer play
Use the Switch 2 data-management controls to identify large installed titles and delete ones you can download again later. This frees internal space without changing the Pokopia requirement. Make sure you understand what is being removed and what remains available before confirming.
Use an appropriate expansion card
If you want to keep your existing games installed, add a microSD Express card that Nintendo identifies as compatible with Switch 2. After inserting and preparing the card according to Nintendo’s on-screen instructions, check the available space again and start the Pokopia download.

- Pokémon Pokopia Bundle (Game + Expansion Pass)
Leave room for the next update
Do not fill every last byte immediately after installation. A small amount of unused capacity gives the console somewhere to place update files and reduces the chance that a later patch will fail. Nintendo’s 7 September 2026 update notice is a reminder that the initial download is only one storage event in the game’s life.
What to check when choosing a microSD Express card
The game’s 6.8 GB requirement does not determine which particular card you should buy. Evaluate the card and seller on these points:
- Usable capacity after formatting: the capacity printed on the package is not necessarily the exact space the console will report after preparation.
- microSD Express compatibility: confirm the Express standard and explicit Switch 2 support.
- Read and write performance: faster storage can affect file transfers and loading behavior, but the game listing does not promise a specific speed requirement.
- Price per gigabyte: compare the cost with the amount of storage you actually expect to use, not only the headline capacity.
- Warranty and support: retain the receipt and check the manufacturer’s replacement terms in your region.
- Retailer authenticity: buy from a reputable seller and be cautious of unusually cheap cards or packaging that does not clearly identify the specification.
Exact prices, capacities and warranty coverage vary by market and product. They are not part of Nintendo’s 6.8 GB game-size listing, so verify them for the card you are considering.

The Nintendo listings reviewed for Pokopia identify Nintendo Switch 2 as the platform and do not list the original Nintendo Switch as a supported system. That means owners of the first-generation console should not assume that a purchase or download intended for Switch 2 will run on their hardware.

Why the listed size may change after release
Software updates
Updates can add features, fix defects or change existing files. The 7 September 2026 update record confirms that Pokopia has received post-release software maintenance. Keep enough free space for the update package and any temporary files required while it is applied.
Downloadable content
If Nintendo releases downloadable content, it may require additional storage beyond the base game. Recheck the eShop information for the specific content rather than assuming that the original 6.8 GB figure includes it.

Regional listings and display differences
Nintendo shows the 6.8 GB figure in its United Kingdom, New Zealand and United States listings. Store pages can display information differently by region, but the published number in those listings is the current reference for planning a Switch 2 download.
Practical checklist before you press Download
- Confirm that the store page identifies Nintendo Switch 2.
- Record the listed requirement: 6.8 GB.
- Check free internal storage in System Settings.
- Leave more than the headline number for installation overhead.
- Decide whether upcoming updates or downloadable content will need additional room.
- If internal storage is insufficient, use a microSD Express card identified as compatible with Switch 2.
- After a major patch, revisit the listing and confirm that your available space is still adequate.
Bottom line for Switch 2 owners
Plan on 6.8 GB for the current Pokémon Pokopia listing, but keep additional free space so installation and updates can complete. You can install it internally when that room is available; otherwise, Nintendo’s recommended expansion route is a compatible microSD Express card. The current listings reviewed for the game are for Nintendo Switch 2, not the original Nintendo Switch, and the required space can change as updates or downloadable content arrive.
