Modern Warfare 4 requires 115 GB of storage on PC at launch, and Activision specifies an SSD. Treat that as a starting requirement rather than a permanent ceiling: mandatory updates can need more room. Official pages reviewed do not publish a fixed installation size for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2.
The short answer
For the supported PC configuration, reserve the published launch requirement on an SSD before installing Modern Warfare 4. The requirement applies across Activision’s minimum, recommended, and ray-tracing PC configurations. Because the same specification warns that mandatory updates may require additional storage, a drive with only the baseline free is likely to become inconvenient as the game is patched.
Console owners should not rely on a single internet figure presented as official. The Xbox listing and Activision material warn about extra space for updates, but the official pages reviewed do not state one fixed byte total for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2.

Activision’s launch PC table states: “Storage Space: 115 GB – SSD required.” The wording matters. It is not a recommendation to use solid-state storage for faster loading; it is the stated storage medium for the supported configuration. The table does not offer an HDD alternative.

Why the number is not a forever limit
The same requirements notes say that additional storage may be required for mandatory game updates. The launch figure therefore describes the initial published requirement, not the maximum space the installation will ever occupy. Keep operating-system space and update staging space available in addition to the game’s own files.
Which PC tiers use the same storage figure
Unlike processor, graphics-memory, and ray-tracing requirements, the storage entry is not split into separate capacities. Minimum, recommended, and ray-tracing rows all show the same launch storage amount and SSD requirement.

How much free space should you leave?
Use the published figure as the installation floor
Before starting the download, make sure the target SSD has at least the official launch requirement free after accounting for the installer, the operating system, and other applications. A drive that reports exactly the minimum may still fail if the launcher needs temporary working space or if an update arrives during installation.

Plan for update headroom
There is no official universal reserve percentage in the cited requirements. The practical rule is to leave a meaningful cushion beyond the published baseline rather than filling the drive to its last gigabyte. The amount you need depends on the size of future patches, the free space already consumed by Windows or other games, and whether the launcher stages a replacement file before deleting an older one.
Why a larger SSD is usually easier
A 1 TB internal SSD is a sensible search category for a gaming PC because it leaves substantially more working room than a drive sized narrowly around one installation. It also accommodates shader caches, the operating system, updates, and other games. Capacity alone does not make an unsupported drive suitable: the drive must be compatible with the PC’s interface and installed as an SSD.
How Modern Warfare 4 manages its files
Texture streaming reduces the installed footprint
Activision says Modern Warfare 4 uses texture streaming across all game modes. The stated goal is to deliver high-quality visuals while reducing the game’s overall storage space on the hard drive. Streaming shifts part of the asset-delivery process toward an internet connection instead of placing every possible texture permanently in the local installation.

That design does not remove the local storage requirement. You still need the published installation space, and streamed content can increase bandwidth use. Players with data caps, slow connections, or unstable service should account for that trade-off when choosing where and how to play.
The full release is part of a connected Call of Duty installation
The beta used a separate install, but the full game remains part of the connected Call of Duty experience alongside Warzone. Shared content is intended to reduce duplicated files and the overall footprint across the connected products. This means the size shown by a launcher can depend on which components you already have installed and which optional content you select.
Online requirements affect storage planning
Activision’s FAQ says Multiplayer, including private matches, and DMZ require a continuous internet connection. Texture streaming and the connected installation model therefore make storage and connectivity related decisions: freeing disk space will not substitute for the connection required by those modes.

The PC number should not be converted into a claimed console total. Console compression, language packs, shared Call of Duty files, patches, and optional components can produce different figures by platform and over time.
How to prepare a PC before installation
- Choose the target SSD. In the launcher, select an internal SSD with enough free capacity for the launch requirement plus your update cushion. Confirm that it is not an HDD presented through a slower external enclosure.
- Check free space in the operating system. In Windows, open File Explorer, select “This PC,” and inspect the free-space figure for the destination drive. Close other installers and remove only files you have verified are safe to delete.
- Account for shared Call of Duty components. Review the launcher’s component or content-selection screen. Existing Warzone or other Call of Duty files may be reused, while optional packs may add space beyond the base selection.
- Start with a stable connection. Texture streaming and required online modes make connectivity important even after the local files are installed. Avoid beginning an update when the drive is nearly full or the connection is likely to drop.
- Let the launcher finish verification. Do not interrupt file verification or remove temporary files while an update is applying. The launcher may need working space before it can replace old files.
What to do when the installer says there is not enough space
First, identify which drive is full
Installers can target a different drive from the one you normally use for games. Confirm the destination in the launcher and check that drive’s free capacity, not merely the capacity of the system drive.

Use the launcher’s content-management controls to uninstall campaigns, language packs, or other components you no longer need, where those controls are offered. Deleting unidentified folders can corrupt the shared installation and force a larger redownload.

Move other games or media
Relocate a verified game library, recordings, or downloads to another compatible drive. Keep the destination SSD’s file system and interface supported by your PC, and leave room for the next update rather than filling it immediately after the move.
Retry after an update fails
If an update repeatedly reports insufficient space, free additional capacity beyond the visible patch size. Replacement-based patching can require temporary room for both the old and new data. Restart the launcher, run its file-repair or verification function if available, and then retry.
Common mistakes and their consequences
- Treating the launch figure as a lifetime maximum: mandatory updates can raise the working requirement.
- Installing on an HDD because it has more capacity: the official PC configuration specifies an SSD, so extra capacity does not satisfy the stated medium requirement.
- Assuming the PC number is the console number: official console totals reviewed here are not fixed or published as one universal value.
- Deleting shared files manually: the connected Call of Duty model can make unrelated-looking files part of another installed component.
