Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition needs approximately 59 GB for a digital installation on Nintendo Switch 2. The physical release is supplied on a 64 GB game card. Either version can need additional internal or microSD Express storage for updates and optional language packs, so do not plan around exactly 59 GB of free space.
The storage figures at a glance
CD PROJEKT RED’s 2025 technical-support page gives the digital installation size as approximately 59 GB. Its wording is precise: “The game is approximately 59 GB.” That figure applies to Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, the Switch 2 package that combines the base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion. You can verify the statement on the official technical-support page.
The physical edition uses a 64 GB game card, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s 2025 launch announcement. The card contains the Switch 2 release, while the digital edition is downloaded from Nintendo eShop. The announcement is available at CD PROJEKT RED’s launch-day announcement.

There is no published guaranteed final total for future patches, optional language packs, or save data. The 59 GB number is therefore a planning baseline, not a promise that every installation will remain at exactly that size.

What is included in the 59 GB installation?
The Switch 2 product is the Ultimate Edition rather than the base game alone. It includes Cyberpunk 2077 and the Phantom Liberty expansion. Consequently, a reader comparing the Switch 2 requirement with an older listing for the base game may see a different figure; those are not equivalent packages.
“Approximately” matters because the amount shown by Nintendo eShop or by the console can change with the software build, installation method, and content selected. It is safest to treat 59 GB as the current official estimate for the digital package and to follow the free-space requirement shown on your own Switch 2 when you begin the download. Is the physical release a full game card or a game-key card?
CD PROJEKT RED describes the physical edition as a 64 GB game card and says that the card contains the Switch 2 release. That means the initial release data is supplied on the card instead of requiring the entire game to be downloaded before you can start.

A game-key card is a different format: the card carries a license while the game data must be downloaded separately. The announcement does not use that terminology or publish a separate mandatory download size for the Cyberpunk 2077 card. Based on the publisher’s stated description, buyers should expect the release itself on the 64 GB card, while still allowing writable space for later updates and language files.
Using the card does not make the console’s storage irrelevant. Switch 2 must be able to save patches and any selected additional content somewhere it can write to, either internal storage or a compatible expansion card. Keep the game card inserted when launching the physical copy, and do not assume that deleting an update will leave the latest playable version available.

Choose digital if you want the game available without swapping cards and have dependable high-speed storage and internet access. Choose physical if you prefer a retail card, want to avoid downloading the main package initially, or value the ability to lend or resell the copy. Neither format eliminates update storage.

How much free space should you reserve?
For a digital purchase, begin with at least the approximately 59 GB installation requirement available. Because the official figure is approximate and later updates or language packs are not included in a guaranteed total, extra headroom is prudent. The sources do not specify a fixed reserve amount, so a precise “59 GB plus X GB” rule would be misleading.

If your internal storage is nearly full, install a compatible microSD Express card before you redeem or update the game.
Why microSD Express matters on Switch 2
Nintendo Switch 2 uses microSD Express as its compatible expansion format. A conventional microSD card that worked with an earlier Switch model is not automatically a suitable choice for Switch 2 expansion. When buying a card, confirm that the packaging explicitly identifies it as microSD Express and that it is currently compatible with Switch 2.

Capacity should be chosen from your complete library, not Cyberpunk 2077 alone. A 59 GB digital installation can consume most of a small card before updates for other games are considered. Conversely, a physical copy may need only patch and language-pack space today but more room as your library grows. Check the console’s reported free space after the card is formatted rather than relying only on the number printed on the package.
How to check Switch 2 storage before installing
- Open System Settings on the Switch 2 HOME Menu.
- Open the Data Management area and inspect available space on the system memory and the installed microSD Express card, if present.
- For a digital copy, compare the available space with the approximately 59 GB requirement shown for the current download. Do this before starting so the console does not fail after downloading part of the package.
- For a physical copy, check free space before inserting the card and installing its first update. The card supplies the release data, but patches and language files still need writable space.
- If space is insufficient, archive or delete software you can redownload, or move appropriate data using the console’s Data Management tools. Do not delete saved data unless you have deliberately backed it up and understand the consequence.
The exact free-space prompt can change as Nintendo and CD PROJEKT RED publish updates. If the number shown by the console differs from an older web listing, use the current console prompt for that installation and retain enough room for the update to complete.
Updates, language packs and the unknown final size
CD PROJEKT RED explicitly states that future updates and additional language packs must be installed on internal storage or an SD card for both digital and physical versions. This is the key reason a 59 GB digital estimate or a 64 GB card does not answer the entire storage question.

There is no official source in the published material that guarantees how large future patches will become, how much each optional language pack will add, or how much save data will eventually occupy. Those values can vary by version and by the content you select. Do not convert the current estimate into a permanent maximum, and do not promise a customer that a particular card size will cover every future update.
If an update will not install
- Recheck free space in Data Management; an update can require temporary working room in addition to its downloaded file.
- If you use a physical card, leave the card inserted and confirm that the console recognizes the game before retrying.
- Remove or archive another game to create headroom, then retry the update.
- Check whether an optional language pack is selected. Install only the languages you need when the console offers that choice.
- Use a microSD Express card if internal storage is too limited, and verify that the card is recognized before downloading.
Common storage mistakes
Planning for exactly 59 GB
“Approximately 59 GB” is an estimate for the digital installation, not a guaranteed final footprint. Leaving no extra space can cause an install or patch to stop even when the initial arithmetic appears to fit.
Assuming the physical card needs no storage
The 64 GB card reduces the initial download, but updates and additional language packs still occupy internal or expansion storage. A nearly full console can therefore fail to update a physical copy.
Buying the wrong expansion card
Switch 2’s compatible expansion format is microSD Express. Confirm that designation before purchase instead of assuming every older microSD card is interchangeable.
Confusing edition sizes
The Switch 2 release is Ultimate Edition, including Phantom Liberty. A size quoted for a base-game release on another platform or edition is not a reliable substitute for the Switch 2 requirement.
Practical recommendations by situation
- Buying digital with an empty console: make sure at least the current approximately 59 GB requirement is free, then leave additional headroom for updates and any language packs you select.
- Buying physical for a nearly full console: the card avoids the initial full download, but install a compatible microSD Express card or free internal space before applying updates.
- Sharing a console with several large games: size expansion storage for the whole library and its updates, not for Cyberpunk 2077 alone.
- Choosing between formats: use digital for download-and-play convenience; use physical for a card-based copy and the option to lend or resell. Both require a plan for writable update space.
The reliable baseline is simple: reserve more than 59 GB for a digital copy, recognize that the physical release is on a 64 GB game card, and keep internal or microSD Express storage available for everything that arrives after the initial release.
