There is no official GTA VI install-size figure yet. Independent reporting in 2026 places the likely planning range at 150–200 GB, but that is an estimate rather than a Rockstar specification. Reserve at least that much usable space, plus extra room for download staging, updates and normal console overhead. Pre-loading is scheduled for November 12, 2026, ahead of the November 19 launch.

The storage number is still unconfirmed

Rockstar has not published a final file-size requirement for Grand Theft Auto VI on its support pages, game site or store listing reviewed for this article. That means no one can accurately promise that the finished download will be exactly 150 GB, 180 GB or any other number.

The most useful current estimate comes from independent reporting by AllThings.how in 2026. It places the plausible preparation range around 150–200 GB, based on the size of comparable Rockstar releases and available reporting. Treat that range as a planning buffer, not as a confirmed installation requirement. The final download could be smaller or larger, and the temporary free space needed while the console downloads and installs it may differ from the final size.

Rockstar’s store listing gives the dates that matter for preparation: pre-load is scheduled to begin on November 12, 2026, and release is scheduled for November 19, 2026. Check your storage before the pre-load window rather than waiting until launch day.

What Rockstar has confirmed about the release

  • GTA VI is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • The physical retail package is code-in-box rather than a conventional game disc.
  • Rockstar Customer Support says: “The physical version of GTAVI will contain a code that can be redeemed for the digital download of the game to support pre-load.”
  • Rockstar has not published an official GTA VI install-size figure, a day-one patch size or a console-specific temporary free-space requirement in the reviewed material.

The code-in-box detail is important if you normally buy physical games to avoid large downloads: the retail package still requires the complete digital game download. The code allows you to redeem the game and use pre-loading, but it does not provide a playable disc installation that bypasses the download.

How much free space should you reserve?

Use the 150–200 GB estimate as the minimum planning range, then leave additional headroom. Consoles may need working space while a large download is unpacked, verified and installed. Future patches and the operating system also consume storage, so a drive showing exactly 150 GB free is not a comfortable target for a game that might approach the top of the estimate.

No published source currently gives a guaranteed number for that extra staging space. The practical rule is to make room for the full 200 GB estimate and keep additional capacity available rather than attempting to hit a precise threshold. If your console is close to full, move or delete games before November 12 and verify the available space again immediately before pre-loading.

WD_BLACK 2TB SN850P NVMe M.2 SSD Officially Licensed Storage Expansion for PS5 Consoles, up to 7,300MB/s, with heatsink - WDBBYV0020BNC-WRSN
  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

Do not confuse a storage estimate with the download size displayed by a store listing. A compressed download can expand during installation, while an update can add files later. Until Rockstar or the platform store shows the actual listing, both figures remain unknown.

Preparing a PS5

Check the internal console storage first

Open the PS5 storage screen and review the free space shown for Console Storage. Identify games you can remove or move, especially large titles you no longer play. Deleting a game does not delete its cloud-synchronized save data when that data is backed up, but confirm your save settings before removing anything you may want to return to.

Because the estimate may reach 200 GB, a nearly full internal drive is likely to cause problems during pre-load even if the final installed game turns out to be smaller. Aim to complete housekeeping before the November 12 start date so a slow download or a last-minute update does not become the limiting factor.

Use a compatible M.2 SSD for playable expansion

Sony Interactive Entertainment states that a compatible M.2 SSD can expand PS5 storage and can be used to download, copy and launch PS5 games. Its published requirements include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interface.
  • Capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB.
  • Physical dimensions, speed and heatsink requirements that must match the specific PS5 model and Sony’s installation limits.

For someone who needs meaningful headroom for a game potentially approaching 200 GB, a 1 TB PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with heatsink is a sensible search description. Capacity alone is not enough: an M.2 drive that lacks the required heatsink, exceeds the permitted dimensions or uses a different interface may not be suitable. Check Sony’s current compatibility and installation guidance for your console revision before buying.

An M.2 expansion drive is internal console storage, so games installed there can be launched normally. It is the appropriate type of expansion if your goal is to install and play GTA VI without repeatedly moving it between drives.

What a USB external drive can and cannot do

Sony says PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage. A USB drive can store PS5 games and move them out of the internal drive, but you must copy a game back to Console Storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before launching it.

That makes USB external storage useful as an archive and transfer tool. For example, you could move older PS5 titles to USB to create room for the GTA VI pre-load, then restore a title later when you want to play it. It is not a way to install GTA VI permanently on USB and run it from there.

PS5 storage option Can launch GTA VI directly? Primary use Important limits
Internal console storage Yes Install and play Limited capacity; must have enough working space for installation
Compatible M.2 NVMe SSD Yes Playable expansion Must meet PCIe Gen4x4, capacity, speed, dimensions and heatsink requirements
USB extended storage No for PS5 games Archive and transfer Copy the game back to internal storage or M.2 before playing

Preparing an Xbox Series X or Series S

Rockstar confirms Xbox Series X|S support, but the official material reviewed here does not state a GTA VI file size or identify a particular Xbox expansion-card model. Do not assume that a specific third-party drive will run the game until Microsoft’s compatibility guidance or the Xbox store listing confirms it.

Before pre-load, open the console’s storage-management area and note the free space on the internal drive and any installed expansion storage. Remove or move games you can replace later. When the Microsoft Store listing exposes GTA VI’s actual download size, use that number together with the console’s own installation-space message; the store listing is the authoritative figure for your edition and region at that time.

Xbox storage behavior can depend on the drive type and game generation. Since GTA VI is a current-generation title for Series X|S, wait for Microsoft’s listing and storage guidance rather than treating a generic USB drive as guaranteed playable expansion.

Physical versus digital: both require a download

The physical edition does not solve the storage problem. Rockstar’s stated code-in-box design means the package contains a redemption code for the digital download, specifically to support pre-loading. You will need an internet connection, an account that can redeem the code and sufficient console storage just as you would with a digital purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying the physical package may still suit people who want a boxed product or a retail purchase, but it should not be chosen on the assumption that a disc will hold the complete game. Keep the code, redeem it through the platform account you intend to use and start the download early enough to accommodate your connection speed.

A practical preparation checklist

  1. Mark the dates. Plan around the November 12, 2026 pre-load date and November 19, 2026 release date shown by Rockstar’s store listing.
  2. Measure free space now. Check the storage screen on your PS5 or Xbox Series console and record the available capacity.
  3. Plan for 150–200 GB. Use the independent estimate as a buffer, not a guaranteed final size.
  4. Create extra headroom. Remove or move enough games that the console can stage a large download and still handle normal system overhead.
  5. Choose the right PS5 drive. If you need playable expansion, use a Sony-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with the required interface, dimensions, speed and heatsink. Use USB storage only for archiving and transfers.
  6. Wait for the Xbox listing. Confirm the actual size and supported expansion hardware in Microsoft’s store and storage guidance before purchasing a drive specifically for GTA VI.
  7. Start pre-loading when available. A code-in-box copy still needs the full digital download, so redeem the code and begin as soon as pre-load opens.
  8. Recheck after installation. Once the game is installed, note the remaining free space and leave room for updates instead of filling the drive immediately.

What remains unknown

Several figures will not be settled until Rockstar or the platform stores publish current listings:

  • The final installed size for the PS5 edition.
  • The final installed size for Xbox Series X|S.
  • The temporary free-space requirement during installation.
  • The size of any day-one patch.
  • How much later updates will add to the installation.
  • The exact Xbox expansion-card compatibility details for GTA VI.

These unknowns are why a precise claim such as “GTA VI needs exactly 200 GB” would be misleading today. The responsible approach is to prepare for the upper end of the estimate, retain additional space and confirm the platform listing when pre-load becomes available.
