For most digital-first players, 1TB is the sensible baseline on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series console. Choose 2TB when you keep a large rotation of current-generation games installed. Nintendo Switch 2 starts with 256GB, and its game-storage expansion requires a microSD Express card.
The right capacity depends less on the number printed on the box than on your game sizes, ownership format, internet connection, captures and installation habits. A few physical games played in rotation may fit comfortably on the included drive; a library containing several 125–175GB downloads can consume 1TB quickly.
Why the capacity on the box is not the capacity you can use
Console makers advertise raw storage capacity. System software, recovery data, formatting and reserved space occupy part of that capacity before you install a game. The free-space figure therefore varies by model and firmware, so there is no single universal usable remainder for every console.

Activision documentation cited by the UK Competition and Markets Authority in 2023 used 125–175GB examples. Those figures are not a size for every game, but they show why one or two large releases materially change a 1TB calculation. A 1TB drive can theoretically hold five 175GB installs or eight 125GB installs before allowing for the operating system, updates, downloadable content, applications and captures; in practice, the usable count is lower.

Digital ownership generally requires the complete game installation on the console. A disc or cartridge can reduce the amount you download, but modern games may still install substantial data and receive updates. Screenshots and video clips use the same storage pool, so frequent capture creators need more headroom than players who never record.

PlayStation 5: when 1TB is enough and when 2TB pays off
What the internal drive can hold
PlayStation 5 models are sold with either 1TB or 825GB of advertised internal storage, and part of that space is reserved. A player who installs a few games, deletes finished campaigns and keeps large downloads on a fast internet connection may not need an upgrade. A digital-only library with several large releases, live-service games and expansions is more likely to make the included drive feel tight.
The correct internal expansion
Sony’s supported upgrade is a compatible M.2 solid-state drive installed inside the console. The drive must meet the current requirements for physical size, interface, performance and a suitable heatsink; check the console’s latest installation guidance before buying because specifications and approved capacities can change. An M.2 drive is the option that lets you play supported PS5 games directly from the added storage.

A USB external HDD or SSD is useful for storing PS4 games and for moving PS5 games into an archive. It is not a replacement for the internal M.2 drive when you want to launch a PS5 game: archived titles must be moved back to internal storage before play. USB storage is therefore economical for a large back catalog or for avoiding a redownload, while an M.2 SSD is the better choice for an active current-generation library.

Xbox Series X|S: internal-equivalent expansion costs more, but removes the speed compromise
Internal capacity and realistic targets
The Xbox Series X Carbon Black model has 1TB of internal storage, and Xbox lists a 2TB special edition. As with other consoles, system data reduces the free amount. One terabyte is a reasonable starting point for players who rotate games; a larger library of current-generation downloads, frequent Game Pass installations or slow internet makes additional high-speed storage more valuable.
Storage Expansion Cards
An Xbox Storage Expansion Card is the platform’s internal-SSD-equivalent option. Microsoft describes these cards as matching the performance of the internal storage, and Xbox Wire explains that the design delivers the same consistent, sustained performance. Current-generation games can be installed and played from the card, making it the straightforward choice when you want more always-ready space without moving games back and forth.

USB 3.1 external drives
Xbox Series consoles support USB 3.1 external hard drives for additional capacity. They are useful for backward-compatible games, media and an archive of Series X|S titles. Newer optimized games generally need to be on the internal SSD or an official expansion card to run; a USB drive can hold those games until you move them back. A hard disk is cheaper per terabyte, while a USB SSD shortens transfer times but does not remove the platform’s play restriction for optimized titles.

Nintendo Switch 2: start with 256GB, then choose the right microSD format
Who can stay with internal storage
Switch 2 includes 256GB of internal storage, with some reserved for system use. That is often sufficient for players who buy cartridges, download selectively and finish or archive games rather than keeping a large digital catalog installed. It is less comfortable for an all-digital library that includes many large releases, updates and downloadable expansions.
Only microSD Express is specified for game expansion
Nintendo says Switch 2 uses the expandable-memory standard called microSD Express, sold separately. Buy a card explicitly identified as microSD Express for Switch 2; an ordinary microSD card is not the specified format for expandable game storage on this console. A 512GB or larger microSD Express card is a practical target for a substantial digital library, while light users may never need one.

Choose capacity by the way you play

Calculate your own requirement before buying
- List the games you intend to keep installed. Separate current-generation titles from older or backward-compatible games because expansion rules differ by platform.
- Use each game’s actual install size. Check the console’s storage screen or the publisher’s current listing. Treat 125–175GB as a warning range illustrated by Activision documentation, not as a universal average.
- Add update and downloadable-content headroom. A game can grow after launch, and temporary space may be needed while updates are installed.
- Reserve space for captures and applications. If you record long clips or keep many screenshots, estimate that media separately instead of assuming it is negligible.
- Leave a working buffer. Do not plan to fill every reported gigabyte; a nearly full drive makes updates and game rotation inconvenient.
- Match the result to your network. Fast, uncapped broadband favors archiving and redownloading. Slow or capped service favors buying enough high-speed capacity to keep your regular games installed.
For example, six games that each occupy roughly 150GB represent about 900GB before system-reserved space, patches, captures and other data. That profile is already beyond a comfortable 1TB target on a console whose advertised capacity is partly unavailable, so 2TB or a supported expansion plan is more practical.

External storage: pick it for the job, not just the price per terabyte
Use internal-equivalent storage for games you launch often
On PS5, that means a compatible internal M.2 SSD. On Xbox Series X|S, it means an official Storage Expansion Card. On Switch 2, it means the internal drive or a microSD Express card. These options preserve the console’s intended high-speed game performance.
Use USB drives as archives and back-catalog storage
A USB 3.1 HDD offers inexpensive capacity for PS4 and other compatible games on PlayStation 5, and for supported older-generation games on Xbox. USB SSDs transfer games faster than hard disks, but they do not automatically make a platform permit current-generation games to run from the drive. Confirm the game-generation rule before treating a USB purchase as a performance upgrade.
Plan for moving games
Archiving saves download time but requires a move operation when you want to play a restricted title. Keep frequently played games on the internal drive or high-speed expansion, and place completed campaigns, rarely played multiplayer titles and large installers on the archive drive.

Storage habits that prevent avoidable upgrades
- Review the console’s storage-management screen monthly and sort by size, not just by recency.
- Delete duplicate betas, unused language packs and captures you have already backed up.
- Archive finished games instead of deleting them when your internet connection is slow or capped.
- Keep a small free-space buffer for patches; waiting until the drive is completely full can force several moves at once.
- Before purchasing expansion, verify the console generation, interface, capacity, performance and heatsink or card-format requirements.
- Do not assume a larger advertised number is fully usable or that any USB drive can launch every game.
Common buying mistakes
Confusing storage with memory
Storage is the long-term space for games, applications, saves and captures. It is different from system memory used while a game runs. Buying a larger drive does not increase frame rate or graphical quality; it increases how many files you can keep available.

Buying an ordinary Switch memory card
Switch 2’s specified expansion format is microSD Express. A cheaper standard microSD card may fit physically but is not the format Nintendo specifies for expandable game storage on this console.
Assuming every external drive is a full console upgrade
USB storage can be excellent for archives and compatible older games, but PS5 and Xbox Series consoles impose play restrictions on current-generation titles. If your goal is to launch those games directly, buy the platform’s supported high-speed expansion instead.
Ignoring model and firmware changes
Console revisions, reserved-space calculations, game patches, expansion limits, prices and retailer availability change. Recheck the manufacturer’s current requirements for your exact model before installation, especially when selecting an M.2 SSD, expansion card or microSD Express card.
