Choose Fire tablet storage based on what you want installed and available offline. If you mostly read, browse the web, or stream while connected and keep few large apps or downloads, the lower internal-storage option may be enough. If you keep a larger app or game library or download content for travel, consider the higher internal-storage option. A microSD card can add room for supported files and media, but on Fire OS 6 and later it cannot be used to install apps or games.
Fire tablet storage options by model
Amazon’s specifications list these capacities for three recent Fire tablet models. They are built-in storage figures, not estimates of the space available after Fire OS and preinstalled content are accounted for.
| Model | Internal storage options | Maximum microSD capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Fire HD 8 (2024, 12th Gen) | 32 GB or 64 GB | Up to 1 TB |
| Fire HD 10 (2023, 13th Gen) | 32 GB or 64 GB | Up to 1 TB |
| Fire Max 11 (2023, 13th Gen) | 64 GB or 128 GB | Up to 1 TB |
Amazon does not provide comparable usable-free-space figures for these models. Configurations and availability may vary by marketplace, so check the exact model and local listing before buying. Amazon Fire tablet specifications
How to choose between the internal storage options
The lower capacity may suit lighter use
If your tablet is mainly for reading, web browsing, and streaming while connected, the lower built-in tier may work if you keep few large apps and downloads. This is a practical rule of thumb, not a guarantee: the space available to you depends on the operating system, preinstalled content, and what you install or save.
#1 Best Overall
- Exclusive “Made for Amazon” SD memory card - The only one tested and certified to work with your Fire Tablet and Fire TV
- Load your Fire Tablet with more fun - By adding space for additional photos, music and movies
- Download your apps and games directly to the SD card
- Class 10 performance for Full HD (1080p) video recording and playback
- Designed to perform multiple simultaneous activities with no lag or delay
Favor more internal storage for apps, games, and offline use
Choose the larger built-in option if you expect to keep many apps or games installed, or regularly save videos and other content for offline use. Internal storage is particularly important for apps and games because Amazon says Fire OS 6 and later do not support installing them to a microSD card.
There is no universal app or movie count
App sizes, game libraries, and downloaded files vary, and the official specifications do not establish a universal number of apps, games, or movies that fit in a given capacity. Choose according to your own habits rather than relying on a fixed “GB per app” estimate.

What a microSD card can—and cannot—do
A compatible microSD card can expand space for supported files and media. It is supplemental storage, not a replacement for internal capacity when you need room for installed apps or games on Fire OS 6 and later. Amazon’s microSD troubleshooting guidance lists these maximum card capacities by tablet generation:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Fire tablet generation | Maximum microSD capacity listed by Amazon |
|---|---|
| 5th and 6th | 200 GB |
| 7th | 256 GB |
| 8th and 9th | 512 GB |
| 10th and newer | 1 TB |
These limits are generation-specific. Check your tablet’s generation and card compatibility before choosing a card; do not assume that a newer model’s 1 TB limit applies to an older Fire tablet.

Choose a compatible microSD card
Amazon’s guidance is to “Verify that the card is UHS or at least Class 4 or higher for non-UHS.” Confirm that the card works with your exact tablet generation and that its capacity is within that generation’s limit. Amazon microSD card guidance
