Short answer: a Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card needs enough local storage for the entire game download. The card is a physical license key, not a cartridge containing the game. Nintendo requires the software to be downloaded to the console’s system memory or a compatible microSD Express card before you can play. The exact requirement is title-specific: for example, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition lists 60.5 GB and FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH lists 91.5 GB in the Nintendo eShop Australia in 2026.

Use the “required free space” printed on the package and shown on the game’s official Nintendo Store or eShop page as your minimum reservation. Keep additional room for installation overhead, patches, downloadable content and other games.

What a Switch 2 game-key card actually contains

A regular game card stores game data on the card. A Switch 2 game-key card works differently: it contains authorization to download the game, while the game files are delivered over the internet and stored locally on the console.

Nintendo describes the card as your “key” to downloading the full game to the system. The card itself therefore contributes virtually no usable game-install capacity. Buying the physical format does not avoid a large download, and removing the download from storage means you will need to download it again before playing.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
  • The complete game occupies space in system memory or on a Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card.
  • The card must be inserted when you play a game-key-card title.
  • An internet connection is required for the initial download and first launch.
  • After the game has been downloaded and started once, Nintendo says it can be played without an internet connection, provided the game-key card remains inserted.

This arrangement affects storage, connectivity and portability at the same time. The card is convenient to carry and can be resold like a physical purchase, but it does not let you run the game directly from the card.

How many gigabytes does each game need?

There is no single Switch 2 game-key-card size. Publishers set the download requirement for each title, and the figure can differ by game, edition, region and later updates. Nintendo says the required free space appears in two places:

  1. On the game-key-card package.
  2. On the Nintendo Store or eShop listing for the corresponding digital version.

Check the listing for your region immediately before purchase or installation. Nintendo’s listings also warn that more or less free space may be required during installation, so treat the published number as a planning baseline rather than a guaranteed byte-for-byte ceiling.

Published examples

Game-key-card release Published download requirement Listing and date
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition 60.5 GB Nintendo eShop Australia, 2026
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH 91.5 GB Nintendo eShop Australia, 2026

These examples show why assuming that every physical release needs the same amount of space is unsafe. One large title can consume more than 60 GB, while another can approach 100 GB before patches or additional content are considered.

How to calculate the storage you should reserve

Start with each title’s listed required free space, then total the games you expect to install at the same time. Finally, leave working headroom for the installation process, updates, save-related data and other software.

Use the package figure as a minimum

If a package says 60.5 GB, do not plan to have exactly 60.5 GB available. Installation may need temporary working space, and Nintendo notes that the amount of free space required can vary. A safer approach is to begin the download only when the console reports comfortably more free space than the published figure.

Add titles together

For two example releases, the listed requirements total 152.0 GB:

  • Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition: 60.5 GB
  • FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH: 91.5 GB
  • Combined listed requirement: 152.0 GB, before installation headroom, patches or other games

This is a planning calculation, not a promise that the final installed folders will occupy exactly that total. Updates can add or replace files, and some installers temporarily use more space than the finished installation.

Account for downloadable content and updates

Compare releases on four separate questions: the initial download size, whether additional downloadable content is available or included, whether updates are likely to add data, and whether the card must stay inserted. A “complete” or “ultimate” edition may include more content than a base edition, but its official listing is the authority for the actual requirement.

System memory versus microSD Express storage

Switch 2 game-key-card software can be installed in the console’s system memory or on a compatible microSD Express card. Nintendo specifically says older, non-Express microSD cards are not compatible for saving Switch 2 game data. A card that worked in an earlier Switch model should not be assumed to work for this purpose.

When internal storage is enough

Install to system memory when the title fits with ample free space and you have no immediate need to keep several large games installed. Internal storage avoids buying an accessory and keeps the game available without moving files between storage devices.

When an Express card makes sense

A microSD Express card is the practical expansion option for a library containing multiple large downloads. It lets you reserve internal memory for smaller software, captures or system needs while keeping large game-key-card installations locally available.

SanDisk’s 2026 manufacturer datasheet documents a Switch 2-licensed microSD Express product in capacities including 512 GB, with read speeds up to 880 MB/s. Capacity and speed are product specifications, not a guarantee that every game will load at that rate; verify that any card is explicitly identified as compatible with Nintendo Switch 2 and microSD Express.

Choosing capacity by your library

Library situation Planning approach Why
One large game at a time Use internal memory if the official requirement fits with substantial free space Avoids an accessory when your installed library is small
Several 60–100 GB releases Plan a compatible microSD Express card and total the listed requirements first Large titles can consume internal memory quickly
Long-term digital and game-key-card library Choose capacity with room beyond your current total Leaves space for patches, new purchases and installation overhead

Nintendo does not publish one universal storage number for all game-key-card releases. Recheck each official software page at the time you buy, because requirements can change with updates and regional listings.

Installing a game-key-card title step by step

  1. Check the requirement. Read the package or open the title’s Nintendo Store/eShop page and note the required free space for your region and edition.
  2. Check the destination. In the console’s storage settings, verify free space in system memory and confirm that any expansion card is a Nintendo Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card.
  3. Insert the game-key card. The console uses the card to authorize the download. Keep it available; you will need it for play later.
  4. Connect to the internet. Use a stable connection and allow enough time for the full download. A game-key card does not provide the game data offline.
  5. Start the installation. If the console reports insufficient space, free more than the published minimum rather than trying to install with only a few megabytes of margin.
  6. Complete the first launch online. Nintendo requires internet access for the download and first launch. Allow any required update to finish before disconnecting.
  7. Test offline play. Once the title has launched successfully, disconnecting from the internet should still allow play according to Nintendo’s guidance, but the game-key card must remain inserted.

What happens if storage is insufficient?

The download will not start or pauses for space

Check the requirement again, including the edition and regional listing. Delete or archive software you no longer use, then retry with more free space than the stated figure. If you have an expansion card, confirm that it is microSD Express; a legacy microSD card is not a valid Switch 2 game-data destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The installation fails near the end

A near-complete failure can indicate that the installer needed temporary working space beyond the headline requirement. Free additional storage, restart the download and let the console complete any pending system update. Avoid interrupting power or removing the card during installation.

The game launches only when connected

The first download and launch require internet. After that, try again offline with the game-key card inserted. If the card is missing, the console cannot use the physical key to authorize the title.

An update or expansion needs more room

Published figures generally describe the listed software requirement, not an unlimited allowance for every future patch or add-on. Keep spare capacity after installation so an update does not force you to remove the base game or other software.

Game-key cards versus ordinary physical cards

The important storage distinction is simple: an ordinary physical card can contain game data, while a game-key card requires a full local download. For a purchase decision, compare the following:

Question Game-key card What to verify
Where is the game data? Downloaded to system memory or microSD Express storage Required free space on the official listing
Is internet needed? Yes, for download and first launch Whether you can complete setup before travelling or going offline
Must the card remain inserted? Yes, according to Nintendo Keep the card with the console when playing
Does the card itself provide install capacity? No Plan storage as though you were installing a digital copy
Can requirements change? Yes, updates and regional listings can alter the practical need Recheck the current Nintendo page before installation

Practical planning checklist

  • Read the exact “required free space” figure for your edition and region.
  • Add the listed sizes of all large games you want installed simultaneously.
  • Reserve extra room instead of treating the published figure as an absolute ceiling.
  • Use only a Nintendo Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card for expanded game storage.
  • Download and launch each game once while online before relying on offline play.
  • Keep the corresponding game-key card inserted whenever you play.
  • Recheck storage before installing major updates or downloadable content.

Bottom line for buyers

Plan for a game-key card exactly as you would plan for a large digital download. The physical card is a license key, not a storage device. Check the title’s official requirement, add your games together, leave installation and update headroom, and use a compatible microSD Express card when internal memory is not sufficient. The two published examples—60.5 GB for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition and 91.5 GB for FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH—illustrate why the individual listing matters more than the “game-key card” label.
