There is no reliable genre-wide storage average for a modern JRPG. The same game can require radically different space on PC, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 because each edition may use different textures, audio, languages, patches and downloadable content. Check the current store listing or the physical package for your exact platform and edition, then leave practical free space for updates. SEGA’s 2025 listings for Yakuza Kiwami 2 show the range: 42 GB available space on PC, 6 GB of free space for the Switch digital version, and 36 GB to start the Switch physical game-key-card edition, with more space potentially needed for updates and other content.
The storage number that matters is the one for your edition
When someone asks how much storage a JRPG needs, the useful answer is not a genre average. It is the requirement attached to the specific platform, edition and release you intend to install. A PC build can include high-resolution textures and several uncompressed audio options that are absent from a console build. A digital console edition can package all of its data locally, while a physical release may put part of the software on a game card and download the rest. Later patches and DLC can change the installed footprint after launch.
Use the number shown on the platform store page or printed on the physical package as your starting point. Treat it as a minimum installation requirement, not as a promise that the game will never need additional space. Keep enough room for updates and any add-ons you plan to install.
One game, three very different requirements
| Edition of Yakuza Kiwami 2 | Published requirement | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| PC | 42 GB available space | SEGA listing, 2025; space required for the PC installation. |
| Nintendo Switch digital | 6 GB of free space | SEGA listing, 2025; requirement for the digital Switch edition. |
| Nintendo Switch physical game-key card | 36 GB available space to start | SEGA listing, 2025; additional space may be needed for updates and other content. |
The spread is why a number copied from a review, another retailer or a different platform can mislead you. Always match the listing to your hardware and edition before you delete files or buy an expansion card.

What makes a JRPG install grow
Platform and edition assets
Storage is consumed by the assets shipped for a particular build. Higher-resolution character and environment textures, cinematic video, voice acting and music can all raise the requirement. Console and PC editions may use different compression or asset sets, so converting one platform’s number into another platform’s estimate is unreliable.
Languages and optional packages
Some releases include multiple voice or text languages. If the platform identifies language or texture packs separately, you may be able to remove packages you do not use. Do not assume every title exposes them as removable items; use the platform’s storage-management screen to confirm what is installed.
Patches and DLC
A launch requirement does not include every future download. Performance patches, bug fixes, expansions and other downloadable content can increase the final footprint. A physical game-key-card release can also require a substantial download after the card is inserted. Plan space for the game’s current update and the add-ons you expect to keep, rather than filling a drive to the exact launch number.

How to check the requirement before downloading
- Identify the exact platform. Write down whether you are buying the PC, Switch, PlayStation 5 or another edition.
- Identify the edition and delivery method. Distinguish digital, standard physical, deluxe and game-key-card releases; their included assets can differ.
- Read the current store or package requirement. Nintendo directs buyers to the eShop or physical packaging for the game-specific figure. Use the value shown there instead of a genre estimate.
- Check free space on the device. Compare the requirement with the platform’s available-space figure, not the advertised capacity of the drive or card.
- Reserve room for updates. If the remaining space would be tight after the initial install, archive or move another title before starting.
Nintendo Switch: expand space without losing your save
Where Switch data lives
Switch software data, updates, downloadable content and screenshots can be stored on a compatible microSD card. Game save data is different: Nintendo states that it is stored in the console’s System Memory and cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. Moving or removing downloaded game data therefore does not, by itself, move the save to the card.

Because the card holds the install while the console memory holds the save, you can clear a completed JRPG and later reinstall it without treating the save as a file on the card. Cloud-save behavior depends on the game and your Nintendo service settings, so verify those separately before deleting anything described as save data.
Archive a finished download
Archiving is the safest first choice when you want to reclaim download space but keep the game visible. Nintendo describes it this way: “Archiving will allow you to delete downloaded software in order to free up space while preserving the software icon on the HOME Menu.” On the HOME Menu, highlight the game, open its software options with the + or − button, choose Manage Software, and select Archive Software. The icon and save remain; the downloadable program data is removed. Select the icon later to redownload the game.
Archive games you have finished or are unlikely to play this month before touching active campaigns. If a title has a pending update or DLC, confirm that you have enough card and system space when you bring it back.

A physical cartridge does not guarantee a zero-download install. The Switch game-key-card example above requires 36 GB of available space to start, and SEGA notes that updates and other content may need more. Check the package requirement before assuming that inserting the card will fit on the console by itself.

When buying a microSD card, confirm that it is compatible with your Switch model and that its usable capacity is sufficient after formatting. A card advertised as a particular capacity will provide less usable space once the system formats it. Capacity should be chosen around the number of digital JRPGs, updates and screenshots you intend to keep simultaneously, not around one game’s launch requirement.
PlayStation 5: delete, move or expand in layers
Find the largest installs
Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps. The list shows which installations consume the most room, allowing you to target completed JRPGs instead of deleting small utilities or saves at random.
Delete and redownload purchases
Deleting a digital game removes its installed files, not your ownership. PlayStation says deleted games and applications remain available for redownload from your game library. This makes deletion practical for a title you have completed when you do not need it immediately. Confirm the save-data options before removing anything, and retain a supported backup or cloud copy where your account and game support one.
Use USB extended storage for PS4 games
A compatible USB 3.x external drive can hold PS4 JRPGs that you are keeping for later. This creates an archival tier and frees the internal console storage for games you play now. The drive is storage, not a way to run PS5 games directly: PS5 game data placed on USB must be copied back to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before it can be played.

Add an internal M.2 SSD for active PS5 games
For a permanent expansion that can run PS5 software, install a compatible M.2 NVMe drive in the console’s expansion bay. Sony’s 2025 safety guidance specifies a PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drive with a supported capacity of 250 GB to 4 TB. Check the current PS5 model’s physical fit, dimensions and heatsink requirements before purchase; a drive that meets the interface or capacity alone may still fail the fit or cooling checks.
| Storage location | Best use | Can you play from it? | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 console storage | Frequently played PS5 and PS4 games | Yes | Limited built-in capacity; monitor Games and Apps. |
| Compatible M.2 NVMe SSD | Additional active PS5 library | Yes, after installation and formatting | PCIe Gen4x4, 250 GB–4 TB, correct fit and heatsink. |
| USB 3.x extended storage | PS4 game archive and PS5 game storage | PS4 games can run; PS5 games must be copied back first | Use a compatible drive and allow transfer time. |
Choosing an expansion approach
Compare options by the job they perform, not just their advertised terabytes.
| Question | Switch microSD | PS5 M.2 SSD | USB extended storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immediately playable software | Downloaded Switch software can be launched from the card. | PS5 games can be played from the installed M.2 drive. | PS4 games can be played; PS5 games must be moved back. |
| Interface and compatibility | Use a card confirmed for your Switch model. | PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe; verify model fit and heatsink. | Use a compatible USB 3.x drive. |
| Capacity to compare | Compare usable capacity after formatting. | Choose within Sony’s 250 GB–4 TB range. | Compare usable capacity after formatting. |
| Save-data location | Switch saves remain in System Memory. | PS5 save handling is separate from game-install storage. | Moving a game does not automatically move its save. |
A large card or drive is useful only if its interface, capacity and platform rules match your library. For a Switch-focused digital collection, a compatible 1 TB microSDXC card is a practical expansion class to evaluate. For active PS5 games, evaluate a 1 TB PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with an approved heatsink; for PS4 rotation, evaluate a USB 3.x external drive. Verify current model compatibility before buying any of these capacities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA storage cleanup sequence that protects your progress
- Inventory the library. Record each title, platform, edition, installed add-ons and whether you are currently playing it.
- Separate active and archival games. Finish or pause games you are unlikely to play this month. On Switch, archive downloads; on PS5, delete installs while retaining saves and supported cloud backups.
- Remove confirmed extras. If the management screen lists duplicate language packs, unused DLC or media captures separately, remove only the items you recognize. Do not delete a save-data entry while trying to remove an install.
- Move games to the right tier. Put PS4 titles you are rotating through on compatible USB storage. Keep actively played PS5 games on console storage or the installed M.2 drive. Keep Switch downloads on a compatible microSD card.
- Recheck available space. Return to the platform’s storage screen and confirm that the free-space total has increased enough for the next patch or reinstall.
- Restore only when needed. Redownload a Switch archive from its HOME Menu icon or a deleted PlayStation purchase from the game library when the title returns to your rotation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using a genre average
Genre labels do not account for platform assets or edition differences. A number quoted for a PC release cannot be used to decide whether the Switch or PS5 edition will fit. Check the exact listing every time.

Confusing advertised capacity with free capacity
Formatting and system data reduce usable space. Judge an expansion device by the free capacity reported after setup, then keep room for patches rather than filling it to the last gigabyte.
Deleting the wrong item on Switch
Archive downloaded software instead of deleting save data. The archive preserves the HOME Menu icon and the save in System Memory; deleting a save is a separate action.
Expecting PS5 games to run from USB
USB extended storage is excellent for storing PS5 game data and playing PS4 games, but a PS5 game must be copied to console storage or an M.2 SSD before launch. Leave enough internal or M.2 space for that transfer.
Assuming a physical card means no update space
The 36 GB Switch game-key-card requirement demonstrates why this assumption fails. Read the package requirement and reserve room for updates and additional content before inserting the card.
Plan storage around play habits
Capacity planning is a scheduling decision as much as a hardware decision. Keep games you are actively progressing on the fastest storage that the platform requires for play. Move completed or occasional titles to archival storage, and archive Switch downloads while leaving their icons and saves available. Before a major JRPG launch, check the listing, count the add-ons you expect to install and identify one or two games that can be archived or moved if the update needs more room.
Recheck free space after every large patch or expansion. A drive that fit the launch install can become full later even though no new game was purchased. Treat the platform’s current storage screen as the source of truth and maintain headroom for the next update rather than waiting for an installation error.
