Buy at least 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD for occasional Windows gaming on an Apple silicon Mac. If gaming is a primary use, 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage are the safer baseline. Choose 32GB or more for demanding AAA titles, high-fidelity settings, streaming, mods, development tools, or several heavy applications at once. Storage is just as important as memory: a Windows virtual machine, macOS, launchers, updates and one modern game can consume most of a 512GB drive.
Your choice also depends on how Windows software runs. Apple silicon Macs support Arm versions of Windows through virtualization, such as Parallels Desktop, or through a compatibility layer such as CrossOver. Individual games can still fail because of graphics APIs, drivers, launchers or anti-cheat systems, and extra RAM cannot repair those compatibility problems.
The practical buying recommendation
| Use case | Unified memory | Internal storage | What it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Occasional or lighter gaming | 16GB minimum | 512GB minimum | A focused setup with a small library, careful install management and possibly external storage |
| Windows gaming as a regular activity | 24GB recommended | 1TB preferred | macOS apps, a Windows environment, several current games and update headroom |
| AAA games and multitasking | 32GB or more | 1TB or larger | High-fidelity settings, recording, streaming, mods, creative software or development tools running alongside games |
These are planning targets rather than guarantees of frame rate. The game, graphics API, launcher and anti-cheat implementation determine whether a title works at all. A larger memory or SSD configuration cannot make an incompatible game launch.

Why Apple silicon changes the calculation
Apple silicon uses unified memory. The same pool is shared by macOS, the Windows virtual machine or compatibility layer, graphics workloads and every application you leave open. A Mac with 16GB does not dedicate all 16GB to a game; macOS and the Windows environment must draw from it first.

Architecture is the other constraint. Parallels documentation states, “Only Arm versions of operating systems are supported.” On an Apple-silicon Mac, Parallels is authorized by Microsoft to run Arm versions of Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise. That is different from installing an Intel edition and expecting identical behavior. Windows can translate some x86 software, but each game’s engine, launcher, driver and anti-cheat system behaves differently.
A virtual machine also needs resources before the game starts. Parallels Desktop 26 documentation, reviewed March 16, 2026, recommends 16GB of RAM or more for best performance, requires at least 16GB of additional disk space for a Windows guest and specifies an SSD for best-performance workloads. Those figures describe the environment, not the complete requirement for your game library.
How much RAM should you buy?
16GB: the entry point
Sixteen gigabytes is workable when Windows gaming is a focused activity and you close unnecessary macOS applications. It is the minimum tier supported by Parallels’ best-performance guidance in the cited 2026 documentation and matches the base memory tier published for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on an M1 Mac targeting about 30 frames per second at roughly 900p.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
At this capacity, avoid leaving many browser tabs, video editors, virtual machines or large creative projects open while gaming. Memory pressure can cause swapping to the SSD, which feels like stutter even when the game itself is otherwise compatible.
24GB: the sensible mainstream target
Twenty-four gigabytes gives macOS, a Windows guest or compatibility layer and a game more breathing room. It is the best general recommendation when you want to keep a browser, chat client, launcher, music player or utility open without treating every gaming session as a cleanup exercise.
It is also a useful buffer for games whose requirements sit above the 16GB entry tier. Cyberpunk’s published example lists 18GB unified memory with an M3 Pro for a 1080p/60fps tier, although that figure is a game-specific requirement and not a universal benchmark for every Mac.

32GB or more: demanding games and heavy multitasking
Choose 32GB or more when you expect high-fidelity settings, large texture packs, mods, recording or streaming, software development, or several demanding applications at the same time. The Cyberpunk requirements reported by Tom’s Hardware from CD Projekt Red in 2025 list at least 36GB for higher-fidelity tiers, illustrating why a 32GB configuration may still be restrictive for the most demanding targets.
More memory helps only after the title is compatible. It does not supply a missing Windows driver, graphics API feature or anti-cheat support.
How a virtual machine consumes memory
Parallels Standard Edition supports up to 8GB of virtual graphics memory and four virtual CPUs per virtual machine; the Pro edition advertises substantially higher limits. Those are allocation ceilings, not promises that a game will use them efficiently. On a 16GB Mac, assigning too much to Windows can leave macOS short of memory. On a 24GB or 32GB Mac, you have more room to balance the guest allocation against the host system.

- In the virtual machine’s configuration window, open the hardware settings for CPU and memory and use a moderate allocation first.
- Leave macOS enough memory for the desktop, launcher, browser and monitoring tools you intend to keep open.
- Increase the guest allocation only if monitoring shows sustained memory pressure inside Windows and the host remains responsive.
How much storage should you buy?
512GB: a managed minimum
A 512GB internal SSD can work if you maintain a small library, remove completed games and use external storage. The nominal capacity is not all available to you: macOS, recovery data, applications, the Windows guest and free space needed for updates consume part of it. Parallels requires at least 16GB of additional disk space for a Windows guest, while CrossOver’s guide lists 1GB of disk space plus additional space for Windows applications.
1TB: the preferred starting point
A 1TB internal SSD is the better choice for a Mac bought primarily for Windows gaming. It gives a virtual machine, several modern games, patches, shader caches and ordinary macOS work room to coexist without constant uninstalling. Keep meaningful free space available; a drive that is nearly full leaves less room for large updates and temporary files.

Game sizes make the difference concrete. Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition requires at least 92GB free for Steam, Epic Games Store or GOG installations, and nearly 160GB for the App Store version, according to requirements reported by Tom’s Hardware from CD Projekt Red in 2025. One title can therefore consume a substantial fraction of a 512GB Mac before Windows and macOS are counted.

Use a 1TB-or-larger external USB-C SSD when internal space is limited
A fast 1TB portable USB-C SSD is the strongest storage add-on for a smaller internal drive. Put virtual-machine bundles, game libraries, installers and backups on it, while retaining enough internal free space for macOS updates and everyday applications. It expands capacity; it does not increase unified memory or graphics performance.
Check that the drive remains connected before starting a VM or game. Safely eject it when finished, and keep a separate backup of irreplaceable saves and documents. An external drive is most useful when its sustained performance and cable connection are reliable; a slow or intermittently disconnected device can turn loading into troubleshooting.

| Path | Strength | Resource and storage effect | Main uncertainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parallels Desktop with Windows 11 Arm | A Microsoft-authorized Windows route with a familiar Windows desktop | Needs a Windows guest allocation and substantial disk space; Standard Edition is limited to 8GB vRAM and four vCPUs | Individual x86 games, launchers, drivers and anti-cheat systems vary |
| CrossOver | Runs Windows software without a full Windows desktop and can integrate it with macOS | Lower fixed overhead than a complete VM; the guide lists 1GB disk space plus the application’s own storage | Compatibility is title-specific, and the guide does not guarantee every game |
Compare the two approaches on four separate questions: does your game run, how much RAM does the method leave for macOS, how much storage does it consume, and does it provide the graphics and anti-cheat support the title expects? A smaller CrossOver footprint is valuable only if the specific game works in its compatibility environment. Parallels’ broader Windows environment is useful only if the game’s translated code and protection systems function there.
A capacity-first setup plan
Before buying the Mac
- List the games you actually intend to play and check each title’s current Apple-silicon, Arm Windows or compatibility-layer status.
- Add the published install sizes, then reserve space for Windows, launchers, patches and macOS. Treat the largest title’s requirement as a floor, not a complete library estimate.
- Select 24GB and 1TB when you want a low-maintenance setup; move to 32GB or more for high-fidelity gaming and simultaneous workloads.
- If the Mac’s internal storage is smaller, budget for a 1TB-or-larger USB-C SSD at the same time rather than waiting until the drive is full.
When using Parallels
- Install Parallels Desktop and create a Windows 11 Arm virtual machine, not an Intel-only Windows image.
- In the VM hardware settings, allocate CPU cores and memory conservatively, leaving headroom for macOS.
- Place the VM bundle on the internal SSD or a fast external SSD with ample free space.
- Install the game launcher inside Windows, check the game’s graphics and anti-cheat requirements, and test the title before moving your entire library.
- Monitor both Windows and macOS for memory pressure and free-space warnings after updates.
When using CrossOver
- Confirm that the Mac is an M1 or newer model running macOS 10.15 or later, matching the requirements in CodeWeavers’ guide.
- Create a separate bottle or environment for the game when the title’s instructions call for one.
- Reserve the game’s full installation and update space in addition to CrossOver’s listed 1GB disk requirement.
- Install the launcher or game, then verify graphics, controller and anti-cheat behavior before purchasing downloadable content or moving saves.
Compatibility problems that extra RAM cannot solve
- Graphics API mismatch: A game may require Windows graphics features that the chosen virtualization or compatibility layer does not expose correctly.
- Anti-cheat rejection: Kernel-level or hardware-sensitive anti-cheat systems can block virtualized or translated environments.
- Launcher failure: A launcher may install while its updater, authentication component or embedded browser fails.
- Driver dependence: Games tied to a specific Windows GPU driver may not recognize the virtual or translated graphics device.
- Performance target mismatch: A published memory tier describes a particular resolution and quality target; it is not a promise for every Apple silicon model.
If a title will not launch, first determine whether the failure is compatibility-related. Try the game’s documented Arm or compatibility-layer guidance, update macOS and the chosen Windows environment, and test with a clean installation. Only after the title runs should you tune memory, graphics quality and background applications.
Choosing between 16GB, 24GB and 32GB
| Question | Choose 16GB | Choose 24GB | Choose 32GB or more |
|---|---|---|---|
| How many demanding apps stay open? | Almost none during play | A browser, chat and normal utilities | Streaming, recording, creative or development tools |
| How large is the game library? | Small and actively managed | Several current games | Large library with high-resolution assets and mods |
| What performance target matters? | Entry-level or moderate settings | Mainstream settings and smoother multitasking | Higher-fidelity targets where the title supports them |
For most buyers, 24GB and 1TB is the balanced configuration. Sixteen gigabytes and 512GB remain viable when budget or model availability requires them, provided you accept tighter limits and use external storage. Thirty-two gigabytes or more is a deliberate choice for demanding workloads rather than a requirement for every Windows game.
