For the Insta360 X5 recording 8K at its published maximum bitrate, budget about 1.35GB of storage per minute. A 512GB microSD card holds approximately 6.3 hours at that planning rate, while the maximum-supported 1TB card holds about 12.3 hours. Insta360 rates the removable 2,400mAh battery for 88 minutes of 8K30 recording in a laboratory test, so two batteries provide about 176 minutes of nominal 8K time and three provide about 264 minutes. In practice, carry extra capacity for screen use, wireless connections, temperature, file transfers and battery changes during takes. A 512GB exFAT UHS-I V30-or-faster card is the sensible default for most day shoots; choose 1TB when you cannot offload footage and your recording plan can exceed six hours.
What controls 8K storage and battery demand?
Two specifications drive the planning problem: video bitrate determines how quickly the camera consumes card space, and battery capacity determines how long the camera can keep recording. The X5’s published maximum video bitrate is 180Mbps. Bitrate is a rate, not a promise that every clip will have exactly the same size: the actual file can be smaller when a mode records below that ceiling, and can vary with frame rate, codec, scene detail and other settings.
Battery figures are similarly conditional. Insta360’s 88-minute result is for 8K30 in a laboratory test, not a guaranteed field duration. A camera that is connected wirelessly, has its screen on, is repeatedly started and stopped, or is operating in cold temperatures can consume power differently. Treat the laboratory number as a planning baseline and leave a reserve rather than scheduling a take that ends at the published limit.

Convert the maximum bitrate into a planning rate
Start with the 180Mbps maximum. Dividing by eight converts megabits per second to megabytes per second: 22.5MB/s. Multiplying by 60 seconds gives 1,350MB per minute, or approximately 1.35GB per minute when using decimal gigabytes. This is a conservative capacity estimate for planning, not a guaranteed file-size measurement for every recording mode.

To estimate a shoot, multiply the planned 8K minutes by 1.35. For example, 90 minutes of maximum-bitrate footage needs about 121.5GB before allowing headroom for separate clips, file-system overhead and other camera files. Avoid planning to fill a card to its printed capacity; stop well before the nominal limit so that an unexpectedly high data rate or a second take does not end a recording.

The hours and minutes in this table are mathematical estimates based on 180Mbps and decimal storage units. They are not a guarantee of the number of clips a particular camera setting will produce. Lower-bitrate modes may use less space, while different frame rates, codecs or complex scenes can change consumption. Leave practical headroom instead of treating the last listed minute as usable recording time.
Is a 512GB or 1TB card better?
Both capacities are within the X5’s published support limit, but they suit different workflows. The decision is less about image quality—card size does not improve 8K quality—and more about how long you can shoot before an offload and how much footage you are willing to keep on one piece of media.

A 512GB card is the balanced default because it offers several hours of maximum-bitrate 8K without placing an entire production day on one very large card. A 1TB card is justified when travel, weather, access or continuous recording makes offloading impractical. If you choose 1TB, maintain a separate backup workflow when possible; capacity alone does not create a backup.
Which microSD cards work in the X5?
Insta360’s requirement is an exFAT-formatted microSD card using the UHS-I interface and a V30 speed rating or higher. Its guidance says: “Please use exFAT format microSD cards of speed classes UHS-I and V30 or above to ensure normal recording.” The published maximum supported capacity is 1TB.
- Use microSDXC media formatted as exFAT.
- Choose UHS-I and V30 or faster; the V30 marking indicates the required minimum sustained video-write class.
- Stay at or below 1TB, the camera’s published maximum.
- Do not use UHS-II or UHS-III cards in place of the required UHS-I media; Insta360 does not list those interfaces as supported for this camera.
- Use a model on Insta360’s compatibility list. The list includes the SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 family in 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities.
Insta360 warns: “Using incompatible microSD cards may cause issues while recording, and footage may be damaged or unusable.” A card that fits physically can still fail the speed, interface, format or capacity requirement. Buy from a reliable source, check the printed capacity and speed markings, and do not assume that a newer or more expensive interface is automatically compatible.

Format and verify the card before recording
- Back up any files already on the card; formatting erases them.
- Insert the card into the X5 and format it as exFAT using the camera’s storage-format command, or format it on a computer as exFAT if the camera’s instructions require that workflow.
- Confirm that the card is UHS-I, V30-or-higher and no larger than 1TB.
- Record a short 8K test clip, stop normally and play it back in the camera.
- Copy that test clip to the computer or phone you will use on location, then safely eject the card and verify that the copied file opens.
Testing catches counterfeit, damaged or incompatible media before an important take. Reformat after backing up footage when you begin a new project, rather than deleting individual clips until the card appears empty.

How long does one X5 battery last in 8K?
The X5 uses a 2,400mAh battery. Insta360’s 2025 published laboratory result is 88 minutes when recording 8K at 30 frames per second. That is the relevant figure for an 8K30 plan; it should not be replaced with the longer times quoted for lower-resolution modes.

The 5.7K figures explain why a listing or user report may claim more than two hours of runtime. They are valid for their stated modes, but they do not describe 8K operation. If you change resolution, frame rate or endurance settings during a production, recalculate the schedule for the mode you will actually use.

How many spare batteries should you carry?
Using 88 minutes as one nominal 8K30 unit, the arithmetic is straightforward. The figures below are cumulative recording time, not a promise that a battery can be run completely flat during a take.

For a full day, start with two spare batteries if the camera will be used mainly in 8K and you cannot recharge between takes. That gives you the camera’s installed battery plus two replacements, or approximately 264 nominal minutes in total. If your schedule contains more than four hours of actual 8K recording, add another battery or arrange USB-C external power where the mounting and environment permit it. A schedule with many short clips may consume power faster than the simple minute total suggests because each setup uses the screen, stabilization, wireless links and repeated start-stop cycles.
Build in a battery-change margin
Do not plan a continuous take to finish at 87 minutes merely because the laboratory rating is 88. Reserve time for powering up, framing, reviewing clips, transferring files, wireless connections and the final low-battery shutdown. Cold temperatures can also reduce available runtime. Change batteries during a natural break, and keep the next battery protected and ready rather than waiting for the camera to shut down.

Use external power for fixed shots
For a long, stationary setup, combine spare batteries with USB-C external power if the mount, cable routing and environment allow it. Protect the connector from strain and accidental unplugging, and test the complete rig before the shoot. External power is a way to extend a setup; it does not remove the need for a charged internal battery or a recovery plan if the cable is disconnected.

Short session: up to about 90 minutes of 8K
A 128GB card has roughly 95 minutes at the maximum planning rate, so it can cover this duration only with very little spare capacity. A 256GB card gives a more comfortable buffer for retakes, multiple clips and mode changes. One fully charged battery is close to the published 88-minute baseline, so carry a second battery if the session includes setup, review or a take that cannot be interrupted.
Three-hour production
Three hours at 1.35GB per minute is about 243GB before headroom. A 256GB card is therefore too close to its mathematical limit; choose 512GB. The nominal battery requirement is just over two 8K30 units, so two batteries are a minimum arithmetic match and a third provides protection against field losses and interruptions.

Six-hour or longer remote day
Six hours at the planning rate is about 486GB. A 512GB card technically covers that total but leaves little room for variance, retakes or non-video files. Use 1TB when you expect more than six hours of 8K or cannot offload safely. Carry at least three batteries for a schedule approaching four hours of actual 8K recording, and add more or external USB-C power for longer continuous operation.
Offload and backup without losing a take
- Stop recording normally before removing the card or battery.
- Copy the day’s clips to two independent destinations when the workflow allows; a single copy is not a backup.
- Open several copied 8K files, including the first and last clip, to confirm that the transfer completed.
- Keep the original card untouched until the copies have been checked.
- Only then format the card in the camera for the next recording block.
A 1TB card reduces the number of card changes but increases the amount of footage tied to one physical card. Multiple 512GB cards can divide a long project into smaller recording blocks, while requiring more card handling and labeling. Choose the approach that matches your ability to offload, verify and protect media in the field.

- Replace cards that are not on the compatibility list, show errors on another device or were bought from an uncertain source.
- Back up any readable footage, then format the replacement card in the camera and run a test clip.
- Do not continue an important shoot on a card that has already produced damaged or unusable files.
The card fills sooner than the estimate
- Check whether the camera is using a different frame rate, codec or mode than the one used for your calculation.
- Account for multiple takes, short test clips and other files in addition to the planned continuous minutes.
- Move to the next larger supported capacity or schedule an offload before the card reaches its nominal limit.
The battery ends earlier than 88 minutes
- Remember that 88 minutes is a laboratory 8K30 result, not a field guarantee.
- Reduce unnecessary screen time and wireless use when the shot permits.
- Keep spare batteries ready, especially in cold conditions or when the camera will be repeatedly started and stopped.
- For a fixed long-duration shot, test a USB-C external-power arrangement before relying on it.
Pre-shoot checklist
- Calculate 8K minutes at 1.35GB per minute, then add headroom.
- Select 512GB for most day shoots or 1TB when six hours may be exceeded and offloading is difficult.
- Verify exFAT, UHS-I and V30-or-higher markings, with capacity no greater than 1TB.
- Format in the camera after backing up the card and record a playback test.
- Schedule batteries against the 88-minute 8K30 laboratory baseline, not the longer 5.7K figures.
- Carry at least two batteries for a multi-hour 8K schedule; add a third or external USB-C power for longer or less predictable days.
- Plan when footage will be copied, verified and backed up before the card is reused.
