There is no official GTA 6 install-size figure yet. As of October 18, 2026, Rockstar has confirmed versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with launch listed for November 19, 2026, but its support information and the PlayStation Store listing do not state the download size or the free space required for installation. Treat figures such as 150 GB, 200 GB, 244 GB, or 300 GB as unverified. On PS5, plan to use the built-in SSD or a compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD; a USB drive can store the game but cannot run the PS5 version. On Xbox Series X|S, use the internal SSD or a Microsoft-approved Storage Expansion Card for any installation that requires Series-speed storage.

What is officially known about GTA 6 storage?

Rockstar’s current support information confirms Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and lists Standard and Ultimate editions. The announced release date is November 19, 2026. Neither that support information nor the current PlayStation Store listing publishes an installed-size number, a download-size number, or a required free-space figure for pre-loading.

The PlayStation Store lists the PS5 Standard Edition at $79.99 in its 2026 listing. That price identifies the edition and market listing; it does not indicate how much storage the game will use. A final number may appear in pre-load metadata or an updated store page closer to launch, and an update after release could make the installed footprint larger than the initial download.

Platform Confirmed version Listed launch date Official GTA 6 size published? Storage to plan for
PlayStation 5 Yes November 19, 2026 No Internal SSD or compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD
Xbox Series X|S Yes November 19, 2026 No Internal SSD or approved Storage Expansion Card when Series-speed storage is required

Because the size is not established, buying a drive solely because a rumor says GTA 6 needs a particular number of gigabytes is risky. Choose storage for your whole game library, captures, updates, and other applications rather than for an alleged GTA 6 figure.

Why the circulating 150–300 GB figures are not confirmed

Large numbers have circulated in social posts, retailer placeholders, and forum discussions. The commonly repeated figures include 150 GB, 200 GB, 244 GB, and 300 GB. None is an official requirement in the Rockstar, PlayStation, or Xbox information checked for this guide.

A rumor can also describe different things: a compressed download, the unpacked installation, a temporary pre-load workspace, or an estimate that includes future updates. Those are not interchangeable. Until a platform store or Rockstar publishes a value, label every such number as unverified and do not use it as a hardware specification.

Where to install GTA 6 on PS5

PS5 games are designed around the console’s ultra-high-speed SSD. Sony says GTA VI leverages that SSD for near-instant load times. The practical consequence is that the playable PS5 version belongs on the console’s internal SSD or on a compatible internal M.2 NVMe expansion SSD.

Option 1: The built-in PS5 SSD

The internal drive is the simplest choice. It already meets the console’s performance requirements, needs no additional hardware, and is the safest location when the game launches. The limitation is capacity: the same space is shared with every installed game, add-on, save-related data, and media item on the console.

Option 2: A compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD

Sony supports M.2 NVMe expansion storage using a PCIe-Express Gen4x4 interface. The drive must also meet Sony’s current physical, thermal, and performance requirements. A model with an appropriate heatsink is a practical choice, but the heatsink and drive dimensions must fit the PS5’s expansion bay and comply with Sony’s specifications.

A 2 TB PS5-compatible M.2 SSD is a reasonable shopping target when you want headroom for a large new release and several other games. It is not evidence that GTA 6 itself requires 2 TB. Capacity should be based on the number of games you keep installed and how often you want to move titles between storage devices.

Option 3: USB extended storage

A USB extended-storage drive is useful for archiving and moving PS5 games. Sony’s guidance is explicit that PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage because those titles are built to use the console’s high-speed SSD path. If GTA 6 is stored on USB, move it back to the internal SSD or a compatible M.2 SSD before launching it.

PS5 location Can launch the PS5 version directly? Best use Main limitation
Console internal SSD Yes Primary installation and fastest, simplest access Fixed console capacity
Compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD Yes Adding substantial high-speed capacity Must meet PCIe Gen4x4, size, thermal, and performance requirements
USB extended storage No Archiving and transferring PS5 games Game must be moved to internal or M.2 storage to play

How to prepare a PS5 for GTA 6

  1. Check current capacity. Open the PS5 storage screen from Settings and Storage, then review Console Storage. Remove games you no longer play, or move them to USB extended storage if you want to keep them available without downloading again.
  2. Decide whether an M.2 drive is worthwhile. If your library already fills the internal SSD, expansion storage avoids repeatedly deleting and redownloading large games. If you only need temporary space, a USB drive can archive titles, but it will not replace an M.2 drive for playing PS5 games.
  3. Verify the M.2 specification before buying. Confirm PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe support, physical fit, and the complete performance and heat-dissipation requirements on Sony’s current PS5 support page. Do not rely on a listing that merely says “NVMe” or “PS5 compatible.”
  4. Install the M.2 drive with the console powered off. Follow Sony’s hardware installation procedure, including the required cover, spacer, screw, and heatsink arrangement for the drive you selected. A drive that does not fit correctly can fail to appear or run outside its intended thermal conditions.
  5. Format the expansion drive when the PS5 prompts you. The console’s storage settings include an M.2 SSD option. Formatting erases the drive, so do not install it with data you need to keep.
  6. Choose the installation location. In the PS5 storage settings, set the preferred location for PS5 games to the internal SSD or M.2 SSD. You can change the destination for individual games later when moving or installing them.
  7. Use pre-load information rather than rumors. When the PlayStation Store displays a GTA 6 download or free-space requirement, compare that value with the free space shown in Storage. Leave additional room for the installer’s temporary work files and a launch-day update; the exact allowance is not published yet.

Where to install GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S

Rockstar has confirmed Xbox Series X|S support, but the official listing checked for this guide does not publish GTA 6’s final size or state a required expansion-card capacity. For Series X|S games that need the console’s high-speed storage, the normal playable locations are the internal SSD and a Microsoft-approved Storage Expansion Card.

The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

Internal SSD

The internal SSD is the default location and requires no accessory. Series X and Series S have different usable capacities, so the amount of free space available to you will depend on the console model and your existing installations. Check the console’s storage screen before pre-loading rather than assuming that a game will fit because another title did.

Storage Expansion Card

An approved Storage Expansion Card is intended to provide storage performance comparable to the console’s internal drive. It is the expansion option to consider if you want to keep Series X|S games installed and playable without moving them back and forth. The official GTA 6 information available here does not identify a minimum card capacity, so wait for pre-load metadata before buying a card solely for this game.

USB storage

A standard USB drive can be useful for archiving and transferring games. It should not be treated as a guaranteed launch location for a Series X|S-optimized title. If the console reports that a game must be moved to internal storage or an approved expansion card, that message reflects the title’s storage-performance requirement.

Xbox location Primary role What to expect
Series X|S internal SSD Install and play Default high-speed location; capacity depends on console model and existing content
Approved Storage Expansion Card Install and play compatible Series titles High-speed expansion; GTA 6 capacity requirement has not been published
USB storage Archive and transfer Useful for holding games, but a Series title may need to be moved before it can launch

How to prepare an Xbox console

  1. Open the storage-management screen. From the Xbox dashboard, go to My games & apps, open the management or storage section, and review the available space on the internal drive and any connected expansion device.
  2. Clear or move unused games. Uninstall games you can redownload, or move them to USB storage for archiving. Keep your save data synchronized with your account before removing a local installation.
  3. Connect an approved expansion card if needed. Use a card intended for Xbox Series X|S storage expansion. The console should identify it in storage management before you move or install games.
  4. Check the final store metadata. When Xbox publishes GTA 6 pre-load details, use the displayed installation and free-space figures. Do not infer the requirement from a retailer’s placeholder or a social-media screenshot.
  5. Set or select the destination. Install to the internal SSD or approved expansion card when the game requires Series-speed storage. Use USB for an archive only if you are prepared to move the title before playing.

How much free space should you leave?

No official number can be given for GTA 6 yet, but an installation normally needs more than the final post-install footprint at some stage. A platform may download compressed data, unpack it, verify files, and apply an update before removing temporary files. The store’s free-space warning is therefore more useful than a rumor about the finished size.

Before pre-loading, make a checklist:

  • Check free space on the exact drive where the game will be installed.
  • Remove or archive games you can restore later.
  • Delete unwanted video clips and screenshots if they occupy significant space.
  • Review add-ons and duplicate content that can be removed without deleting a game’s saves.
  • Leave a cushion beyond the displayed download requirement for unpacking and the first update.
  • Keep the console connected to power and online during the pre-load and update process.

Do not translate a rumored file size directly into a purchase decision. If the official listing eventually shows a size that fits your current drive, an expansion SSD or card may still be useful for the rest of your library; if it does not fit, the store’s requirement tells you how much space to create.

Choosing between internal storage, M.2, expansion cards, and USB

The right purchase depends on whether you need to launch games directly, how many titles you keep installed, and how much installation work you accept. Current prices for drives and cards vary by model, capacity, region, and promotion, and no GTA 6-specific capacity or price requirement has been published.

Troubleshooting storage problems

The store says there is not enough space

Check the free space on the destination drive, not merely the total capacity printed on the drive’s packaging. Delete or move enough content to satisfy the platform’s current requirement, then retry the download. If the requirement changes after an update, use the new store or console message as the authoritative value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PS5 does not recognize an M.2 SSD

Turn the console off and check that the drive is seated correctly, the expansion cover and spacer are installed as specified, and the SSD meets PCIe Gen4x4, size, heatsink, and performance requirements. A generic NVMe drive that lacks the required interface or dimensions may not be accepted.

A PS5 game is visible on USB but will not start

That is expected for PS5 titles. Use the game-management controls to move it from USB extended storage to the internal SSD or compatible M.2 SSD, then launch it from the high-speed location.

Xbox asks to move the game before playing

Move the installation to the internal SSD or an approved Storage Expansion Card. USB remains useful as a holding area, but the console can require Series-speed storage for optimized games.

The pre-load size differs from an online claim

Use the number shown by the platform store or console. Online claims may describe a different edition, region, build, compression state, or future update and are not a substitute for the official listing.

What to do on launch day

  1. Open the game’s official store page on your console and read the displayed download and free-space requirement.
  2. Confirm that the destination is the internal SSD or an eligible high-speed expansion drive.
  3. Pause or move other downloads so the game and its update receive available bandwidth and storage.
  4. After installation, check for a separate launch update before starting the game.
  5. If you later archive GTA 6 to USB, remember that you will need to move it back to playable high-speed storage before launching it on a supported console.

The storage decision is therefore straightforward even before the final number appears: keep the game on PS5’s internal SSD or a compliant M.2 SSD, or on Xbox’s internal SSD or approved expansion card. Use USB as an archive, and wait for official pre-load metadata before treating any capacity figure as real.
