For most people buying a new computer, 512 GB is the practical middle ground. Choose 256 GB only if you keep most photos and documents in the cloud, stream media, and install relatively few large applications. Choose 1 TB or more if you keep substantial photo, video, movie, or game libraries on the computer, or expect those collections to grow quickly.
Windows 11’s 64 GB storage requirement is a compatibility floor, not a comfortable everyday capacity. Your real requirement is the space for the operating system, applications, local files, temporary working data, updates, and future growth.
SSD capacity recommendations at a glance
The right capacity depends on what remains stored locally. The following tiers are practical planning guidance, not official guarantees for every user or computer.
| Typical workload | Starting capacity | When it works | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light local use | 256 GB | Web, office work, messaging, streaming, cloud-synced files, and a small application set | Little headroom for large games, extensive photos, video projects, or years of downloads |
| Mixed everyday use | 512 GB | A broader application collection, offline documents, moderate photos, and occasional large downloads | Can become tight if you retain several large games or a substantial media library |
| Large local library | 1 TB or more | Many photos, movies, games, creative projects, or files that must remain available offline | Higher purchase cost; very large video or archive collections may still need additional storage |
| Continuously growing archive | More than 1 TB, or internal plus external storage | Frequent video production, large game libraries, or long-term media retention | Requires a storage plan, backups, and possibly an external drive or cloud service |
Microsoft’s laptop buying guide states that people who want to save a lot of photos, movies, or games on a PC should consider between 256 GB and 1 TB or more. That range is intentionally broad because the amount of local content, not the label “everyday,” determines the answer.

Why the advertised number is not your usable space
A drive marked 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB does not give you that entire amount for personal files. The operating system, recovery data, preinstalled software, file-system formatting, application caches, and update files all consume space. The exact usable figure varies by computer model and installation, so check the storage screen on the specific machine rather than relying on a universal subtraction.
The 64 GB Windows requirement
Microsoft lists 64 GB as the minimum storage requirement for Windows 11. This number answers whether a device meets a basic installation requirement; it does not describe a comfortable computer for applications and personal files. After Windows, drivers, updates, and ordinary software are installed, a 64 GB device has very little room for documents, photos, downloads, or temporary files. Treat it as a floor for compatibility, not a buying target.
Updates need variable working room
There is no single “reserve exactly this many gigabytes” rule for Windows updates. Microsoft says update-space needs depend on the previous Windows version, files that can be reused, installed applications, and how those applications store data. A drive that is nearly full can therefore fail an update even when the update itself appears smaller than the remaining free space. Selecting the next capacity tier above today’s measured use is safer than relying on a fixed reserve percentage.

Applications can need installation space and working space
Application sizes vary widely, and an installer may need more temporary space than the final program occupies. Creative software, game launchers, development tools, and apps that cache media can expand well beyond a simple download size.
| Application example | Published storage figure | What the figure does and does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Photoshop on Windows | 10 GB available disk space for installation, plus additional free space during installation | The installation requirement is not a complete estimate of scratch disks, caches, projects, or future updates |
| Adobe Photoshop Elements 2026 | 9 GB available disk space for installation | Adobe also says more space is needed for online content and temporary files |
These are application examples, not a sizing rule for every program. Before buying, check the current system requirements for software you consider essential. Record both the stated installation space and any requirement for temporary files, content downloads, scratch space, or project libraries.
A step-by-step way to calculate your requirement
- Check what is already used. On a Mac running macOS Ventura 13 or later, open System Settings → General → Storage. On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Storage. Note total capacity, available space, and the categories consuming the most room.
- Separate fixed and movable data. List the operating system and applications separately from documents, photos, videos, games, downloads, and offline media. Mark which files must be available without an internet connection.
- Find the largest categories first. A few game installations, video projects, photo libraries, virtual machines, or download folders can outweigh hundreds of small documents. Investigate those categories before trying to optimize minor files.
- Check requirements for demanding applications. Use the software publisher’s current requirements for installation, temporary files, content packs, and project storage. Adobe’s Photoshop and Photoshop Elements figures show why the download size alone is insufficient.
- Estimate growth over the computer’s planned life. Consider how often you add photos, record video, install games, download offline media, or keep old projects. Include files you expect to retain rather than only this month’s usage.
- Choose the next capacity tier. If your current and expected local collection sits close to a tier boundary, move up rather than filling the drive immediately. A larger internal SSD is convenient because it is always connected and does not depend on cloud availability or a cable.
- Decide where overflow will live. If the excess is mainly an archive or media library, compare an external SSD, cloud storage, or a combination. Keep a separate backup; moving a file is not the same as protecting it.
What each common capacity feels like in practice
256 GB: workable but deliberately constrained
256 GB can suit a person who streams music and video, uses browser-based or office applications, keeps a modest document collection, and allows cloud services to hold older files. It is also reasonable for a secondary computer whose main purpose is communication, browsing, and lightweight work.

The trade-off is management. Large application updates, several modern games, a growing photo library, or downloaded movies can consume the remaining space quickly. You may need to remove installers, relocate media, use online-only files, or attach an external drive sooner. Confirm the machine’s actual usable capacity and the requirements of your essential applications before choosing this tier.
512 GB: the balanced everyday choice
512 GB gives a mixed-use computer substantially more breathing room for applications, documents, photos, and temporary downloads without requiring a large local archive. It is a sensible default when you are unsure whether 256 GB will remain comfortable but do not routinely keep large video or game libraries offline.
It is not automatically future-proof. A handful of large games, raw camera files, or video-editing projects can still dominate the drive. If those are central to your routine, compare their requirements and your growth rate with the 1 TB tier before purchasing.

1 TB or more: a better starting point for large collections
Start at 1 TB or higher when the computer is the primary home for many photos, movies, games, or creative projects. Microsoft explicitly includes “1 TB+” in its guidance for buyers saving a lot of large files. The plus sign matters: a large local collection can outgrow 1 TB, so plan how older material will be archived or backed up.
This capacity also reduces the frequency of file shuffling and uninstalling games, but it does not eliminate the need for backups. A single internal SSD can fail, be damaged, or be lost with the computer.
Internal SSD, external SSD, or cloud storage?
Use the internal SSD for active work
Keep the operating system, frequently used applications, current projects, and files that must be available everywhere on the internal drive. This provides the least friction and avoids a program failing because a removable disk is disconnected.

Use an external SSD for overflow and archives
A portable 1 TB external SSD is a practical category for large photo, video, or archive collections that do not need to occupy the internal drive. Check the computer’s available USB or Thunderbolt ports, the drive’s connector, and whether the intended workload needs sustained transfer speed. Label the drive, eject it properly, and maintain a second copy of irreplaceable data.
Apple documents moving large media libraries to an external drive. Apple also documents installing macOS on an external USB or Thunderbolt drive and using it as a startup disk; APFS is recommended, especially for SSDs. This supported arrangement requires the drive to be connected and introduces setup and compatibility considerations, so it is not as convenient as having equivalent capacity internally.
Use cloud storage for access and optimization
Cloud storage can reduce the amount of local data when your connection is reliable and you are comfortable with files being online-only or automatically optimized. Apple describes iCloud optimization that keeps smaller local versions while storing originals in the cloud. Microsoft 365 home plans list 1 TB or 2 TB of pooled OneDrive storage; Microsoft’s page reports a 2 TB allocation for new Family and Premium subscribers beginning October 7, 2026. Plan terms and allocations can change, so verify the current offer before treating cloud capacity as part of your budget.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying to the minimum requirement: A device that technically meets Windows 11’s 64 GB minimum can become unusable for updates and personal files. Use the minimum only as a compatibility check.
- Counting only the installer: Applications may need temporary space, downloaded content, caches, or scratch disks. Check the publisher’s full requirements.
- Ignoring offline copies: Cloud files, streaming services, and synced folders may still occupy local space when marked for offline use. Inspect storage settings rather than assuming everything is online-only.
- Forgetting growth: New photos, games, projects, and updates accumulate. Compare the capacity you need at purchase with the collection you expect to retain later.
- Assuming an external drive solves everything: Removable storage must be connected, can be misplaced, and can fail. Use it for the right data and back it up.
- Waiting until the drive is full: Low free space can prevent updates, interrupt exports, and leave applications without working room. Move archives or remove unnecessary data before the warning becomes an emergency.
A simple decision rule
Choose 256 GB when your local workload is intentionally light and cloud or external storage is part of the plan. Choose 512 GB when you want a broadly comfortable everyday computer with moderate local files. Choose 1 TB or more when large media, games, or creative projects are a normal part of your workflow. If you cannot identify where your current data will fit, inspect the storage breakdown first and price the next tier up rather than guessing from the advertised number.
