Modern PC games do not share one storage requirement. The current official examples here range from 40 GB to 115 GB of available space per game, and some require an SSD while others merely prefer one. Use the requirement for each game and version as your starting point, then add room for updates, your operating system, applications and other files.

Your ideal SSD capacity depends on how many games you keep installed simultaneously, the largest configurations you plan to use, and what storage interface and form factors your PC supports. A drive that meets one game’s requirement may be inadequate for a multi-game library.

What current PC game requirements show

Published requirements are the most reliable way to estimate a game’s storage footprint, but they describe a particular game build and configuration. They are not an industry-wide average, and they do not guarantee the final installed size after patches or optional content.

Game and configuration Published available space SSD requirement Publisher and date
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7; minimum, recommended and competitive/ultra 4K PC specifications 115 GB on an SSD at launch SSD specified Activision, 2025
Cyberpunk 2077; minimum and recommended PC requirements 70 GB SSD required Steam/CD PROJEKT RED, page checked 2026
Palworld; minimum and recommended PC requirements 40 GB SSD required Steam/Pocketpair, page checked 2026
Hogwarts Legacy; minimum and recommended PC requirements 85 GB SSD preferred and HDD supported for minimum; SSD required for recommended Steam/Warner Bros. Games, page checked 2026
Rainbow Six Siege; several configurations 65 GB for several configurations; 110 GB for the 4K/120 fps ultra configuration SSD required Ubisoft, requirements updated August 3, 2026

The spread is substantial: the smallest example is 40 GB, while the largest listed launch requirement is 115 GB. Rainbow Six Siege also demonstrates why a single number can be misleading: its 4K/120 fps ultra configuration lists 110 GB, compared with 65 GB for several other configurations. These figures are published requirements, not a measured comparison of installed folders.

Available space is a baseline, not a permanent promise

When a system-requirements page says a game needs a certain amount of available space, it means the computer should have at least that much free capacity when installing or running that version. It does not promise that the downloaded files will always occupy exactly that amount, nor does it include every future patch.

Activision’s Black Ops 7 requirements make the qualification explicit: Additional storage space may be required for mandatory game updates. The same page says, Specs are valid for product launch and may be updated in the future. Treat 115 GB as the launch baseline for the listed PC configurations, not as a lifetime upper limit.

Requirements can also differ by edition, graphics preset, texture package or optional downloadable content. Before buying a drive or beginning an installation, check the game’s current store or support listing and note which configuration you intend to use.

How to calculate the SSD capacity your library needs

Capacity planning is an addition problem. Start with the games you want installed together, then reserve room for updates and everything else that must remain on the drive.

  1. List concurrent installations. Write down the games you expect to keep installed rather than every title you might play someday.
  2. Record each current requirement. Use the latest listing for the edition and graphics configuration you plan to run. If a title gives different figures, use the largest configuration relevant to you.
  3. Add the baselines. Sum the available-space figures. For example, Palworld, Cyberpunk 2077 and Hogwarts Legacy total 40 + 70 + 85 = 195 GB before update headroom or other files.
  4. Reserve update room. There is no universal percentage that applies to every game. Keep additional free capacity because publishers can issue mandatory or large updates, and a requirement can change.
  5. Subtract other storage commitments. The same SSD may hold Windows, applications, recordings, documents, creative projects or backups. Those files reduce the space available for games.
  6. Check the hardware before selecting a capacity. Confirm that your desktop or laptop has a compatible interface, physical form factor and available slot or bay.

Here are useful arithmetic examples from the published figures:

Games installed together Baseline arithmetic Baseline total before updates and other files
Palworld + Cyberpunk 2077 40 GB + 70 GB 110 GB
Palworld + Cyberpunk 2077 + Hogwarts Legacy 40 GB + 70 GB + 85 GB 195 GB
Black Ops 7 launch specification + Hogwarts Legacy 115 GB + 85 GB 200 GB
Black Ops 7 launch specification + Rainbow Six Siege 4K/120 fps ultra 115 GB + 110 GB 225 GB

These totals show why a drive sized for one title can become cramped quickly. They are starting points, not recommendations for a particular marketed capacity. Whether a 1 TB or 2 TB SSD is sensible depends on how many such baselines you combine, how much non-game data you keep, and how often you uninstall older titles.

How much free space should you leave for updates?

No publisher in these examples defines a universal free-space percentage for all games. The safe approach is to avoid filling the drive to its limit and to revisit the current requirement before a major installation or update.

Update needs can be larger than the final change in installed size because the launcher may need space to download, verify or replace files. The evidence available for Black Ops 7 establishes only that mandatory updates may require additional storage; it does not establish a fixed amount or percentage. Do not turn that warning into a made-up rule such as always reserving 10% or 20%.

Keep a practical buffer by considering your own update habits. If you install games only occasionally and remove finished titles, a smaller reserve may work. If you keep a large library, record gameplay, or want several day-one updates to install without housekeeping, choose more capacity or plan regular moves to another supported drive.

SSD versus HDD: the requirement is game-specific

An SSD is not automatically mandatory for every modern PC game, but the examples show a clear range of policies:

  • SSD required: Cyberpunk 2077 and Palworld list an SSD for their PC requirements. Rainbow Six Siege also specifies an SSD.
  • Configuration-dependent: Hogwarts Legacy lists SSD (Preferred), HDD (Supported) for minimum settings and SSD for recommended settings. An HDD can satisfy the minimum storage medium requirement in that listing, but not the recommended one.
  • SSD specified at launch: Black Ops 7’s published 115 GB figure is stated as available on an SSD for its listed PC specifications.

Storage capacity and storage type are separate checks. A large HDD does not satisfy a title that requires an SSD, and a fast SSD with insufficient free space cannot install the game. Read both the capacity line and the storage-medium line in the current requirement.

Do not infer a universal performance result from these labels. The listings establish whether the publisher requires or prefers an SSD; they do not provide a common benchmark showing how many frames per second, seconds of loading time or texture-streaming behavior a particular drive will deliver.

Choosing between capacities without guessing

Compare candidate capacities against five concrete questions:

  • How many games stay installed? Add their current requirements rather than estimating from the number of titles alone.
  • Which configuration is largest? A high-resolution or high-refresh-rate mode can have a larger published requirement, as Rainbow Six Siege’s 110 GB ultra configuration illustrates.
  • How much non-game data shares the drive? Include the operating system, applications and personal files that cannot be moved elsewhere.
  • How often do you need update headroom? Frequent large updates favor more unused capacity than a library that is regularly rotated.
  • What does the PC physically support? A capacity is useful only if the drive’s interface and form factor fit an available connection.

A smaller SSD can be reasonable for a single-game or rotating library, provided the game requirements and update room fit alongside your other files. A larger SSD becomes easier to justify when you keep several 70–115 GB-class games installed simultaneously or do not want to manage space after every major patch. Neither 1 TB nor 2 TB is objectively necessary for every player; the correct choice follows from your arithmetic and hardware.

Check compatibility before purchasing an SSD

Capacity is only one part of the decision. Before ordering an internal drive, verify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Interface: Confirm that the motherboard or laptop supports the interface used by the SSD you are considering.
  • Form factor: Check the physical size and mounting style accepted by the system.
  • Available slot or bay: A desktop may have an open position, while a laptop may have one occupied slot and no room for a second internal drive.
  • Operating-system support: Make sure the system can initialize and use the new drive, and plan how you will install or move games.
  • Budget and capacity value: Compare the amount of usable game space you need with the purchase cost rather than paying for capacity that your system cannot use.

An external SSD is conditional, not a universal workaround. The specific PC, game and launcher must support installing and playing that title from an external drive, and the connection must remain reliable during play. Check those policies before treating external storage as an answer to an internal capacity problem.

A practical installation and planning workflow

  1. Inventory your current library. Note the installed size or current requirement for each title you intend to retain.
  2. Check the publisher listing. Look for the latest date, edition, graphics configuration and SSD/HDD wording.
  3. Calculate the baseline sum. Add the figures, then include space for the operating system, applications and personal files sharing the drive.
  4. Set an update reserve. Leave enough free capacity for the way you use the PC; do not rely on a universal percentage.
  5. Validate the drive fit. Match interface, form factor and slot availability to the computer’s manual or specifications.
  6. Install or move games deliberately. Put SSD-required games on an SSD, and confirm the launcher’s destination before downloading large files.
  7. Recheck after major updates. A publisher can revise requirements, and optional content can increase the footprint over time.

Troubleshooting common storage problems

The installer says there is not enough space

Compare the free space shown by the operating system with the game’s current requirement, not an old screenshot or launch-era estimate. Remove or move games you no longer need, clear safe temporary files, or install to another compatible drive. If the title has optional content, deselect packages you do not plan to use when the launcher allows it.

The game is on an HDD even though an SSD is required

Move the installation to an SSD-supported location through the launcher, or reinstall it there. Increasing HDD capacity will not change an SSD requirement.

An update fails despite the game fitting previously

Check the publisher’s current requirement and free additional space before retrying. The earlier installation may fit while the update process needs extra working room, and the publisher may have revised its specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The new SSD is not visible to the PC

Recheck the physical installation, supported interface, form factor and available slot. A capacity decision cannot solve a compatibility mismatch; consult the computer or motherboard documentation before formatting or moving game data.

Bottom line

Plan from the current game listings, not from a universal rule. The examples span 40 GB to 115 GB per title, with SSD requirements ranging from mandatory to configuration-dependent. Add the games you want installed together, reserve room for updates and other PC data, and confirm interface and form-factor compatibility before buying. Recheck requirements whenever a publisher changes the game or releases substantial content.
