One Reptile Hide and three Salt produce three Reptile Leather at a Drying Rack in one minute. For any target, calculate ceil(leather wanted ÷ 3) Reptile Hides and multiply that batch count by three for Salt. For example, six Reptile Leather requires two Reptile Hides, six Salt and two minutes on one Drying Rack.
The Reptile Leather conversion at a glance
Reptile Leather is made in complete three-piece batches. A single batch consumes one ordinary Reptile Hide and three Salt, then outputs three Reptile Leather after a one-minute drying process. The crafting station is the Drying Rack.

That means the useful conversion is 1 Reptile Hide → 3 Reptile Leather, not one leather per hide. Salt is a separate requirement for every batch, so collecting hides without enough Salt will leave the recipe unable to start.
How to calculate the exact amount you need
Because the recipe only runs in whole batches, round the leather target up to the next multiple of three. Use this sequence:

- Write down the number of Reptile Leather you want.
- Divide that number by three.
- Round the result up to a whole number. This is the number of Drying Rack batches and the number of Reptile Hides.
- Multiply the batch count by three to get the Salt requirement.
- Multiply the batch count by one minute to estimate processing time on a single rack.
In compact form:
Reptile Hides = ceil(L ÷ 3)Salt = 3 × ceil(L ÷ 3)Drying Rack batches = ceil(L ÷ 3)One-rack time = ceil(L ÷ 3) minutes
Here, L is your desired amount of Reptile Leather. The ceiling function matters whenever the target is not divisible by three: a request for one or two leather still uses a complete batch and therefore produces one extra leather for later use.

The ranges in the first column reflect the same rounding rule. Wanting four leather does not create a special four-leather recipe; it requires two full batches, gives you six leather, and leaves two after the four you planned to spend.
Worked examples for common targets
One Reptile Leather
ceil(1 ÷ 3) = 1. Gather one Reptile Hide and three Salt. The rack makes three leather, so two remain after using one.
Five Reptile Leather
ceil(5 ÷ 3) = 2. You need two Reptile Hides and six Salt. Two batches produce six leather, leaving one beyond the five requested.
Eight Reptile Leather
ceil(8 ÷ 3) = 3. Prepare three Reptile Hides and nine Salt. Three minutes of work on one rack yields nine leather.

Twelve Reptile Leather
ceil(12 ÷ 3) = 4. The exact materials are four Reptile Hides and 12 Salt, with four one-minute batches.

Zero or already-stocked leather
If your target is zero, no batch is required. If you already have some leather, subtract that inventory from the amount you intend to spend, then apply the formula to the remainder rather than to the original project total.
Planning the Medium Backpack
The item table lists the Medium Backpack at six Reptile Leather. Six divides evenly by three, so this item needs exactly two batches:
- Reptile Hides: 2
- Salt: 6
- Drying Rack batches: 2
- Processing on one rack: 2 minutes
There is no rounding waste for this item because its leather cost is a multiple of three. If you are preparing several Medium Backpacks, multiply those figures by the number of backpacks. Three backpacks, for instance, require six hides, 18 Salt and six batches.
Planning the Tank Chestplate
The Tank Chestplate uses two Reptile Leather. That cost is below a full batch, so it still consumes one Reptile Hide and three Salt. One batch outputs three leather, leaving one leather available for another craft.

When planning a mixed equipment loadout, add all leather costs first and then round once. This avoids overestimating materials by rounding each item separately. For example, a Medium Backpack plus a Tank Chestplate costs eight leather total, which is three batches: three hides and nine Salt, producing nine leather. Crafting each item as an isolated shopping calculation would also lead to three batches here, but combining the totals makes the reason and leftover clear.
Where ordinary Reptile Hide comes from
Ordinary Reptile Hide is a common crafting material dropped by Snapjaws. Hunt Snapjaws when you need the input for the standard Reptile Leather recipe, then bring the hides and Salt to a Drying Rack.
The hide count is a material requirement, not a guaranteed number of drops from a particular fight. The recipe tells you how many hides must be present; your hunting time depends on how many Snapjaws you encounter and what they drop.
Do not substitute Water Reptile Hide
Water Reptile Hide is a different resource. It is dropped by Water Reptiles in Veilwater Basin and is used for Water Reptile Leather through its own recipe. It should not be counted as ordinary Reptile Hide for the conversion above.
- Standard route: Snapjaw drops → Reptile Hide → standard Reptile Leather recipe.
- Water route: Water Reptile drops in Veilwater Basin → Water Reptile Hide → Water Reptile Leather recipe.
If a recipe or item description names the water variant, stop and verify the material before spending time farming. The two names are similar, but they are not interchangeable inputs for this calculation.

Using the Drying Rack efficiently
Prepare the complete batch before starting
For every batch, place one Reptile Hide and three Salt in the required ingredient slots, select the Reptile Leather recipe and start the Drying Rack. A batch cannot produce a partial amount, so having only one or two Salt is not enough to process a hide.
Estimate queue time
One batch takes one minute. If you have four batches and only one rack, allow four minutes of processing time, assuming the rack remains active and you collect or continue the work as the interface requires. With multiple racks operating in parallel, the elapsed time is governed by how many batches each rack handles; the total material requirement does not change.

Separate material collection from processing
Use the formula to make a shopping list before leaving your base. For a 15-leather project, the list is five Reptile Hides and 15 Salt, not 15 hides. Once the materials are in storage, count the batches rather than individual leather pieces when deciding how many rack cycles to run.

Assuming one hide makes one leather
This underestimates your output and can make you farm unnecessary hides. The standard batch produces three leather, so use the three-to-one conversion.
Forgetting Salt
Every hide batch also consumes three Salt. Multiply the rounded batch count by three before you start hunting; otherwise the Drying Rack may sit idle while you gather the missing ingredient.

Rounding down
Dividing seven leather by three gives 2.33, but two batches make only six leather. Round up to three batches, which means three hides, nine Salt and nine leather produced.

Armor and backpack costs are stated in leather, not hides. Convert the entire leather requirement first. A two-leather item still requires a full three-leather batch.
Using the water variant by mistake
Check the full material name. Water Reptile Hide belongs to the Water Reptile Leather route, while Snapjaw drops provide the ordinary hide used here.
A reusable worksheet for any crafting project
Copy this small worksheet whenever you plan a build:
- Leather to spend: add the leather cost of every item you intend to craft.
- Existing leather: subtract usable Reptile Leather already in your inventory.
- Remaining target: call the result
L. If it is zero or negative, no new batch is needed. - Batches and hides: calculate
ceil(L ÷ 3). - Salt: multiply that batch count by three.
- Rack time: multiply the batch count by one minute for a single rack.
- Expected output: multiply the batch count by three; the difference between that output and

This method works for a single item, a full armor set or a stockpile. It also makes leftovers predictable instead of treating them as a mistake: every target that is not a multiple of three necessarily leaves one or two leather after the final batch.

The recipe and item costs are documented as Enshrouded game data, including the one-hide/three-Salt input, three-leather output and one-minute duration. Game updates can change recipes or material names, so if a future patch displays different values in your in-game Drying Rack, use the current recipe panel for that save and recalculate with the same batch formula.
For the values described here, the dependable answer remains: count whole three-leather batches, reserve three Salt per batch, and distinguish ordinary Reptile Hide from Water Reptile Hide before you begin farming.
