For a small All the Mods 10 (ATM10) server, start with 12 GB of total system RAM and give the Java process an 8–12 GB heap. A group of five or more players is better served by 14–16 GB total. These are third-party planning figures, not an official ATM10 requirement, so verify the current server files and increase memory only when monitoring shows a need.
The short answer for ATM10 server RAM
Allocate memory according to the number of people online, the amount of world being generated, and how much headroom your operating system and other services need. For a private server with roughly five players, the practical starting range is 12–16 GB of total machine RAM. A Java heap of approximately 8–12 GB sits inside that budget.

Another Space-Node guide gives 11 GB as a recommendation when more players and chunks are involved. Treat both numbers as estimates rather than guarantees.
The important distinction is that “12 GB of RAM” can mean either the machine’s total memory or Java’s heap. For a server, those are not interchangeable. The operating system, Java runtime, native libraries, file cache, monitoring tools, and any other services also consume memory.

Total RAM versus Java heap
Total system RAM
Total RAM is the physical memory installed in the computer or included in a hosting plan. If a computer has 16 GB installed, the Minecraft process cannot safely use all 16 GB because the operating system and background services require room too. A server that exhausts physical memory may swap to disk, stall, or be terminated by the operating system.
Java heap
The Java heap is the portion reserved for Minecraft’s Java objects. The maximum heap is commonly shown with an -Xmx option. A Space-Node guide says the ATM10 user_jvm_args.txt it examined contains -Xmx8G, while a Playkeeper pull request describes a manifest-recommended heap of 8196 MB. The same pull request estimates about 12 GB of total memory after overhead is included.
Those references do not prove that every ATM10 server download ships with the same setting. Another search result about All the Mods server files says no heap is set by default and that -Xmx4G is commented out. Because the reports conflict, open the copy of user_jvm_args.txt that belongs to your exact ATM10 release instead of copying a value from a different version.
Why leaving headroom matters
Setting the heap equal to installed RAM leaves no safety margin. Java also uses memory outside the heap, and the operating system needs memory for networking, disk caching, and its own processes. Keep a buffer between the configured -Xmx value and physical RAM. A 12 GB machine with an 8 GB heap, for example, leaves roughly 4 GB for everything else; the exact available amount will vary with the operating system and software running alongside the server.

Recommended RAM by player count
The following ranges consolidate the player-scaling figures reported by Space-Node in 2026. They are planning ranges, not measured guarantees, and assume a current ATM10 server rather than an older modpack release.

For a typical friend group, the table means you can begin at 12 GB if usage is modest, or choose 14–16 GB when five or more people will regularly be online. If you expect 10–20 concurrent players, start in the 16–20 GB range rather than trying to stretch a small installation.

Use the runtime cited for ATM10
MC-Node’s ATM10 guide cites Java 21. Confirm that the Java executable used by your launch script is Java 21, not merely that Java 21 is installed somewhere on the machine. A launcher can continue using an older runtime if its path or environment variable still points to it.
Check the runtime with your operating system’s Java version command, then check the launch script or service definition to see which executable it invokes. If the server reports an unsupported class version, startup failure, or unusual mod-loading error after a Java change, revert to the runtime supported by the exact ATM10 release and its current instructions.

Inspect the files shipped with your release
- Download the server package for the exact ATM10 version you intend to run.
- Open
user_jvm_args.txtin a plain-text editor before changing anything. - Look for an active
-Xmxline and distinguish it from a commented line beginning with a comment character. - Record the existing value, then choose a heap that leaves room for the operating system and other services.
- Save a backup of the original file so you can restore the shipped settings after an update.
Do not assume that an ATM10 update preserves the same defaults. Pack files can change their Java arguments, and the conflicting reports about -Xmx8G and a commented -Xmx4G are a reason to inspect each release.
How to choose a starting allocation
For a private server on a 16 GB computer
With 16 GB physically installed, an 8 GB heap is a conservative starting point if the machine is dedicated to the server. It leaves memory for the operating system and background services. If five or more players will explore simultaneously, 16 GB total may still be tight during periods of rapid chunk generation; watch actual usage before deciding whether to move to a larger machine.

For a dedicated 24 GB machine
A 10–12 GB heap fits the small-group guidance while preserving a larger non-heap buffer. This is useful when the machine also runs backups, a web panel, voice chat, or other services. Do not raise the heap simply because the machine has unused capacity; measure first.
For a host plan
Check whether the advertised number is total container memory or only the Java heap limit. Ask how much memory is reserved for the operating system, control panel, backups, and other processes. A plan advertised as 12 GB may provide less than 12 GB to the Java process, or it may count memory differently from a self-hosted machine.

Monitoring tells you when to add RAM
RAM advice is a starting point because ATM10 workloads vary. Exploration, chunk generation, automated bases, entity-heavy farms, and simultaneous logins can create very different peaks. Monitor while the busiest expected group is online and performing normal activities.
- Watch physical memory: sustained near-full usage or operating-system swapping indicates that the machine needs more total RAM or fewer background services.
- Watch Java heap occupancy: repeatedly reaching the maximum heap, followed by long pauses or failed allocations, indicates that the heap may be too small or that a mod or world area is unusually demanding.
- Watch server responsiveness: delayed block actions, mobs moving in bursts, and slow chunk loading can be caused by CPU or disk limits, not just RAM.
- Record peak conditions: compare memory during quiet operation with the peak when several players travel in different directions.
Increase the allocation in measured steps and retest under comparable conditions. Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to identify whether memory was the actual constraint.

Confusing client and server requirements
A single-player client and a dedicated server have different workloads. A search summary mentioned a client allocation of 10 GB on a 32 GB computer, but its source was not identified, so it is not a reliable ATM10 server requirement. Do not use that figure to size a dedicated server.
Copying settings from ATM8
Older ATM8 files shipped with -Xmx6G, and users reported that value as too small for their workloads. ATM8 is a different, older pack. Its argument file is not evidence that ATM10 needs 6 GB, nor that increasing ATM10 to a particular number will solve a problem.

Allocating nearly all available RAM
An oversized heap can lengthen garbage-collection pauses. If the server becomes less responsive after a large increase, reduce the heap, restore operating-system headroom, and investigate CPU, disk, or mod-specific causes rather than assuming that more RAM is always better.
Ignoring world-generation spikes
A server may appear healthy while everyone remains near an established base, then struggle when several players travel into unexplored terrain. Test the server with the activities your group actually performs before declaring an allocation sufficient.

Changing values while the server is running
Heap arguments are read at startup. Stop the server cleanly, edit the appropriate argument file or service configuration, and restart it. Confirm in the startup log that the intended Java command and heap value were used; an edited file has no effect if the launch script reads a different file.
Self-hosting versus a managed plan
The RAM number is only one part of the decision. Self-hosting gives you direct control over Java 21, JVM arguments, operating-system headroom, backups, and monitoring. A managed plan can simplify provisioning and scaling, but the provider may control or reserve part of the memory and may expose fewer JVM settings.

When comparing plans, request the memory limit visible to Java, not just the marketing label. Also confirm whether backups and control-panel processes consume the same allocation.
A practical sizing procedure
- Count concurrent players, not total members. Size for the busiest normal session, then add headroom for occasional guests.
- Choose total RAM from the table. Use about 12 GB for a small group, 14–16 GB for five or more regular players, and 16–20 GB for 10–20 players.
- Reserve non-heap memory. Leave room for the operating system, Java outside the heap, backups, and other services.
- Inspect the release’s argument file. Confirm the active
-Xmxsetting and back up the original. - Run Java 21 if supported by your release. Verify the actual executable used by the server.
- Stress the normal workload. Have several players explore, build, and use automated systems while recording memory and responsiveness.
- Adjust one variable at a time. Increase total RAM or heap only when measurements show pressure, and reassess after an ATM10 update.
How current are these numbers?
ATM10 releases can change mod versions, world-generation behavior, and shipped Java arguments. The figures above come mainly from 2026 hosting guides and a pull request rather than a verified official ATM10 requirements page. The reported 10 GB minimum is specifically described as a pack-author figure by Space-Node, but that attribution was not confirmed from an official pack document.
Before purchasing hardware or committing to a long hosting term, check the server files for your exact ATM10 version, confirm the supported Java runtime, and measure peak memory with your intended player count. Recheck after major pack updates because a previous allocation is not a permanent requirement.
