For most mini PCs, choose 16 GB of RAM for office work, 16 GB as a starting point for coding, and 32 GB or more for virtual machines. Consider 32 GB for demanding development work and 64 GB for several or memory-heavy VMs, provided the exact mini PC supports that capacity. These are practical workload targets, not universal requirements: the right amount depends on what you run at the same time and whether the memory is upgradeable.
Quick recommendations by workload
| Use | Practical target | When to choose less or more |
|---|---|---|
| Office work | 16 GB | 8 GB can work for lighter use, but offers less headroom for many browser tabs and apps running together. |
| Coding | 16 GB to start | Consider 32 GB for larger projects, local databases or services, containers, or heavier multitasking. |
| Virtual machines | 32 GB as a reasonable starting point for one modest guest | Consider 64 GB for several or memory-heavy guests, if the model supports it. Include memory for the host as well as each running guest. |
Use the table as a buying guide, not a promise that every application will perform well at a particular capacity. Official requirements and practical comfort targets answer different questions. Neither the operating-system minimum nor a container prerequisite establishes a universal amount for a particular office, coding, or VM workload.
Is 8 GB enough in a mini PC?
It can be enough for lighter office use, and it meets some published requirements, but those facts do not make 8 GB a comfortable choice for every buyer. A Windows mini PC with a browser, documents, video calls, and routine multitasking is a better fit for 16 GB if you want more room for applications to run together.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft lists 4 GB as the Windows 11 minimum. Its separate general advice says, “8 GB of memory is recommended to keep your device running long term,” and notes that 16 GB or more may suit projects requiring higher performance. Microsoft Support does not establish an ideal capacity for each workload in this article’s scope; its minimum is an operating-system threshold, not a recommendation for a busy desktop.

For coding, 8 GB is not automatically disqualifying, but it leaves less capacity for the operating system, editor, browser, and development services to share. Docker’s Windows installation documentation lists 8 GB of system RAM among the prerequisites for its WSL 2 backend. That is a prerequisite, not a guarantee that every multi-container workload will feel comfortable. If containers or other tools run alongside your editor and browser, 16 GB is a more practical starting point, with 32 GB worth considering for heavier work.
For full virtual machines, do not interpret an 8 GB host as suitable simply because a tool can start. The host and guest share the machine’s physical memory while the guest is running. If you expect to use VMs regularly, plan around 32 GB for one modest guest plus ordinary host use, subject to the mini PC’s supported maximum.
Choosing RAM for office work
When 8 GB can make sense
Choose 8 GB only if your office workload is genuinely light and the price or other constraints matter more than extra headroom. Think about the way you work, not just the names of the applications: a browser, documents, and a video call may overlap, and other apps may remain open at the same time. The more often you switch among several active tasks, the stronger the case for 16 GB.
Microsoft’s 4 GB Windows 11 minimum is useful for checking whether a system meets that stated OS requirement. It does not say that a 4 GB machine will be responsive for your work, nor does it replace the separate 8 GB general guidance on Microsoft Support. Use neither number as a substitute for matching memory to your expected workload.

Why 16 GB is the safer everyday target
For a Windows mini PC used with a browser, documents, calls, and routine multitasking, 16 GB is the practical target in this guide. It gives you more room to keep everyday applications open together than an 8 GB configuration. If the machine’s RAM is soldered or difficult to replace, choosing adequate capacity at purchase matters especially because you may not be able to add memory later.
For office use, compare the total price and upgradeability of the specific systems you are considering. A lower-capacity model is not necessarily a better value if the memory cannot be expanded and your workload outgrows it. Conversely, do not pay for a larger capacity solely on the assumption that every office task needs it; the recommendation is a useful target, not a universal minimum.
Choosing RAM for coding and containers
Start with the whole development workload
For an editor, browser, and modest development environment, 16 GB is a practical starting point. Move toward 32 GB if you expect larger projects, local databases or services, containers, or substantial multitasking. The editor is only one part of the workload: consider what else must run at the same time and whether your tools need local services or an isolated environment.
Alongside RAM, assess the mini PC’s CPU capability and storage. Those are separate purchase considerations for coding, and more memory does not replace them. The right balance depends on the project and development setup; the available official guidance does not define a universal RAM requirement for coding.

WSL and containers are not the same as full VMs
Microsoft describes Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) as a developer-oriented option that requires fewer resources than a full virtual machine. That makes WSL a different memory scenario from running a full guest desktop. Docker’s Windows documentation specifies 8 GB system RAM as a prerequisite for its WSL 2 backend, while its settings documentation explains that WSL 2 dynamically allocates memory and that resource limits can be adjusted.
Docker recommends increasing memory allocation when Docker is slow or when running multi-container workloads. Treat that as a workload-dependent tuning signal, not as a fixed RAM target for every container setup. If a mini PC will host containers alongside your everyday desktop and development tools, 16 GB is a sensible starting point; 32 GB provides a more appropriate target when the project and simultaneous workload are larger.
Choosing RAM for virtual machines
For VMs, capacity planning must include the host operating system and its open applications as well as every guest that will be active simultaneously. A guest does not get a separate pool of physical memory: its allocation comes from the same system RAM the host uses. That is why the number and memory demands of concurrently running guests matter more than a simple “one VM” label.
One modest guest
Plan on 32 GB as a reasonable starting point for one modest guest alongside ordinary host use. This is a practical planning recommendation, not a published universal requirement or guarantee. If the guest is memory-heavy, the host has many applications open, or you intend to run other guests at the same time, consider more capacity and verify that the mini PC can support it.

Several or memory-heavy guests
Consider 64 GB for several guests or guests with heavier memory needs, but only if the exact mini PC supports that amount. Count the memory needed by the host and each guest running at the same time before you buy. A system with a lower supported maximum cannot become a 64 GB system simply because a kit with that capacity is available.
If your development setup can use WSL rather than full desktop VMs, compare those approaches before sizing the machine. WSL is intended for developers and is described by Microsoft as requiring fewer resources than a full VM; the actual workload still matters, especially when Docker or multiple services are involved.

RAM capacity alone does not tell you whether a mini PC can be upgraded. Specifications vary by exact model and revision. For example, Crucial’s listings report two memory slots and a 64 GB maximum for the ASUS MiniPC PB63, while its listing for the Lenovo ThinkCentre M715 Tiny (2nd Gen) reports two slots and a 32 GB maximum. These are model-specific examples, not general mini PC specifications.

Crucial’s catalog includes multiple SO-DIMM types and capacities, so a kit’s general label does not establish compatibility. Its installation guide directs buyers to consult the computer’s owner manual for expansion slots. Check that manual and the exact system specification before ordering; do not assume that a generic 32 GB DDR4 SO-DIMM kit fits every mini PC.
A practical decision process
- List what runs at the same time. Include routine apps, browser use, development tools, local services, containers, and any guests you plan to keep running. For VMs, count concurrent guests rather than all guests you might install.
- Choose a workload target. Use 16 GB for typical office use or modest coding, consider 32 GB for heavier development or a modest VM workload, and consider 64 GB for multiple or memory-heavy guests where supported.
- Check the exact mini PC specification. Confirm soldered versus removable memory, module type, DDR generation, speed, slots, and maximum capacity for that model and revision.
- Compare purchase and upgrade paths. For office use, compare total price and upgradeability. For coding, compare RAM alongside CPU capability and storage. For VMs, prioritize maximum supported RAM, slot count, guest count, and the capacity required by the host and active guests.
- Verify the kit before installation. Match its specifications to the computer manual and account for whether existing modules must be removed. A capacity printed on a kit is not evidence that a particular mini PC supports it.
What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you
Microsoft Support publishes a 4 GB Windows 11 minimum and separate general memory advice that mentions 8 GB and 16 GB or more. The publication year is not stated on that source page. Docker Docs lists an 8 GB system-RAM prerequisite for the Windows WSL 2 backend; its publication date is not stated on the page. Those figures answer limited OS or software questions. They do not establish universal comfort targets for office work, coding, or a particular number of VMs.
The 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB targets here are workload-based buying recommendations. They are not vendor guarantees or results of comparative testing. The useful capacity depends on the applications and guests you run together, and the upgrade ceiling depends on the specific mini PC. Make the choice from both sides: the workload you expect and the machine’s documented limits.
