For most new laptops, 16GB of RAM is the practical default. Choose 8GB only for light browsing, writing and streaming; choose 32GB or more for 4K video, large creative projects or several demanding applications running together. Microsoft’s 4GB Windows 11 requirement is an installation floor, not a comfortable buying target, while Copilot+ PCs require at least 16GB plus other hardware.

The short answer by workload

RAM (random-access memory) holds the data and application code your laptop is actively using. More RAM lets you keep more browser tabs, documents, media assets and programs open before the operating system has to move data to slower storage. Capacity does not by itself make a processor faster, and it cannot replace a capable CPU, GPU, NPU or fast storage, but insufficient RAM can make any of those components appear slow.

Primary workload Practical target What that target means
Browsing, writing and streaming 8GB can work; 16GB is more comfortable Eight gigabytes suits light use but leaves less room for many tabs, calls or background applications.
Office work and everyday multitasking 16GB A sensible default for a new Windows laptop, according to consumer guidance published by Tom’s Guide on October 8, 2026.
Copilot+ PC features At least 16GB, plus the other required hardware Microsoft’s category requirement includes memory, an NPU and other specifications. RAM alone does not create Copilot+ eligibility.
Photoshop and HD video 16GB or more Adobe recommends 16GB for Photoshop and for HD media in Premiere Pro.
4K video and large creative projects 32GB or more Adobe recommends 32GB or more for 4K-and-higher media in Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements.

These are capacity targets, not benchmark guarantees. Performance also depends on the exact processor, graphics hardware, storage, application version, project size and whether the laptop is using shared or dedicated memory.

Why Windows 11’s 4GB minimum is not a buying recommendation

Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements page states, “Memory: 4 gigabytes (GB) or greater.” That figure answers whether a system meets the operating system’s minimum installation or upgrade requirement. Microsoft also notes that individual features can require more capable hardware.

A laptop with 4GB may boot Windows and run a small number of basic applications, but the operating system, security tools and browser will consume a substantial part of that capacity. Once physical RAM is full, Windows relies more heavily on a page file on the SSD. Storage is much slower than RAM, so switching applications, opening large files and restoring browser tabs can become noticeably sluggish. Treat 4GB as a compatibility floor for an existing machine, not as a sensible specification for a new purchase.

How much RAM AI features actually require

Copilot+ PC eligibility

Microsoft’s Windows specifications page says devices with fewer than 16GB of RAM are not Copilot+ PCs. The designation also depends on other requirements, including an appropriate neural processing unit (NPU) and storage configuration. A 16GB laptop without the required NPU and platform features does not qualify simply because it has enough memory.

Conversely, a laptop below the Copilot+ threshold may still run compatible first- and third-party local AI software. The 16GB figure determines eligibility for that Microsoft device category; it is not a universal minimum for every AI application. Check each application’s current requirements, model size and whether it uses system RAM, dedicated graphics memory or both.

RAM is only one part of local AI performance

  • NPU: An NPU accelerates supported AI operations efficiently, but its presence and performance vary by processor generation.
  • GPU memory: Some AI workloads place model data in dedicated graphics memory. A laptop can have ample system RAM and still be constrained by limited GPU memory.
  • Shared or unified memory: On systems where the processor and graphics hardware share a memory pool, graphics activity reduces the amount available to applications. The advertised capacity is the total pool, not necessarily the amount available to Windows programs.
  • Storage: Large models and creative assets need free, fast storage. RAM cannot compensate for an almost-full or slow drive.

For an AI-focused purchase, verify the complete platform specification rather than selecting a memory number in isolation.

8GB, 16GB or 32GB: what each tier feels like

8GB: viable for constrained light use

Eight gigabytes can handle email, documents, a modest number of browser tabs, streaming video and occasional video calls. It becomes restrictive when many tabs remain open, a browser call runs alongside office software, or large spreadsheets and images are involved. Background synchronization, security software and operating-system activity further reduce the margin.

Choose 8GB only when the laptop is inexpensive, the workload is genuinely light and the memory can be upgraded later—or when you have confirmed that your applications and usage pattern fit the limitation. If memory is soldered, the initial choice is effectively permanent.

16GB: the balanced default

Sixteen gigabytes gives ordinary multitasking enough headroom for office applications, numerous browser tabs, messaging, video meetings and light photo or video work. It is also the RAM minimum for the Copilot+ PC category, although the other hardware requirements still apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a new general-purpose Windows laptop, 16GB is the most defensible default because it avoids treating the operating system minimum as a recommendation while avoiding the cost and power trade-offs of capacities intended for heavier projects.

32GB or more: for sustained heavy workloads

Thirty-two gigabytes is the appropriate starting point when you edit 4K footage, maintain large Photoshop documents, work with complex timelines, use virtual machines, or keep several demanding creative applications open simultaneously. Adobe’s current requirements for Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements specify 32GB or more for 4K media.

Confirm the needs of your specific software, plug-ins, source footage and future projects before paying for a higher tier.

Creative applications: read the requirement in context

Application or media level Minimum or recommendation Interpretation
Photoshop desktop 8GB minimum; 16GB or more recommended Eight gigabytes may launch the application, but 16GB is Adobe’s recommended level for a smoother working margin.
Premiere Pro, HD media 8GB minimum; 16GB recommended Sixteen gigabytes is the cited target for HD editing.
Premiere Pro, 4K and higher media 32GB or more recommended Higher-resolution timelines, effects and source assets justify the larger capacity.
Premiere Elements 2027, HD media 16GB recommended Adobe’s consumer editor sets the same HD target as Premiere Pro’s recommendation.
Premiere Elements 2027, 4K media 32GB or more recommended Use the 4K recommendation when working with 4K footage rather than relying on the HD figure.

Application requirements are not controlled tests of how fast a particular laptop will render or export. They indicate supported or recommended configurations. Timeline complexity, effects, codecs, proxies, display resolution and background tasks can change the practical experience.

Multitasking: estimate your real memory load

Count the demanding things you do at the same time, not just the application you open most often. A browser with many active tabs, a video meeting, a large spreadsheet, cloud synchronization and an image editor can collectively exceed the comfortable margin of an 8GB machine even when each program works alone.

Browser tab counts are a poor universal benchmark because pages differ greatly. The most reliable guide is your own pattern: note which applications must remain open together and check their current requirements.

Before buying: verify memory flexibility

Capacity is only part of the decision. Manufacturers use different designs, and the exact model—not merely the product family—determines whether an upgrade is possible.

  1. Identify the exact configuration. Record the model number, processor version, screen size and factory RAM. Retail listings can group several configurations under one name.
  2. Check whether memory is soldered. Soldered RAM cannot normally be replaced or expanded by the owner. Buy the capacity you expect to need for the laptop’s entire service life.
  3. Check for upgradeable slots. A removable module may be replaceable, while an empty slot may allow expansion. Confirm the maximum supported capacity in the manufacturer’s service manual.
  4. Confirm memory type and layout. Laptop memory standards, module sizes and channel configurations must match the system. Do not assume a desktop module or a kit advertised for another generation will work.
  5. Account for shared memory. If graphics use the system pool, the amount available to applications can be lower than the headline capacity, especially during games, video work or GPU-accelerated AI tasks.
  6. Choose the capacity you need now. An upgrade is not guaranteed, and opening a chassis can affect warranty terms or introduce installation risk. Use the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact device.

Symptoms of insufficient RAM and what to do

Common symptoms

  • Applications reload when you switch back to them.
  • Windows pauses while changing tasks, even though the CPU is not fully busy.
  • Large files take a long time to open, and the storage activity light remains busy during simple switching.
  • Creative applications warn about memory, reduce previews or become unstable when projects grow.
  • Video calls or browser tabs become unreliable when an editor or other large application is open.

Immediate steps

  1. Save work and close applications you are not actively using.
  2. Use Windows Task Manager to sort processes by memory and identify unusually heavy programs or tabs.
  3. Reduce browser tabs, disable unnecessary startup utilities and pause nonessential background synchronization during an intensive session.
  4. Keep adequate free space on the system drive so Windows can use its page file; this does not turn storage into equivalent RAM, but an almost-full drive can worsen paging.
  5. Update the affected application and graphics driver, then check its project and cache settings.
  6. If the same workload repeatedly exhausts memory, move to a higher-capacity laptop or install a compatible upgrade where the design permits it.

Closing programs is a workaround, not a substitute for capacity. If the laptop is permanently constrained by soldered memory, plan around that limit or replace it for workloads that have outgrown the machine.

Choosing a configuration for common buyers

Buyer profile Recommended starting point Reasoning
Student or home user focused on documents and streaming 8GB if budget is tight; 16GB preferred Light use can fit in 8GB, while 16GB tolerates more tabs, calls and background applications.
Office worker, developer or remote worker 16GB Leaves room for browsers, office tools, meetings and development utilities without treating paging as normal.
Photographer or Photoshop user 16GB or more Matches Adobe’s recommendation; larger documents and concurrent applications favor additional headroom.
HD video editor 16GB or more Matches Adobe’s HD guidance for Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements 2027.
4K editor or large creative-project user 32GB or more Matches Adobe’s 4K recommendations and provides room for complex timelines and assets.
Buyer specifically seeking a Copilot+ PC At least 16GB plus qualifying NPU and platform hardware Memory is mandatory but not sufficient for the designation.

Bottom line for a new laptop

Buy 16GB for a broadly capable everyday laptop. Select 8GB only for light use and a clearly constrained budget, preferably when memory is upgradeable. Select 32GB or more when 4K editing, large creative projects or simultaneous heavy applications are part of your normal workflow. For AI features, verify the complete hardware platform: 16GB is the Copilot+ memory threshold, not a guarantee that every AI workload will run well.
