For Windows 11 alone, the published minimum is 4 GB, but that is only an installation and operating-system floor. A more useful buying decision depends on what you will run at the same time. Microsoft specifies 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 for Copilot+ PCs, while individual games can ask for considerably more: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 lists 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommended on its Steam requirements page.

There is no single RAM number for every gaming or local-AI computer. Use the requirements for the exact game, model and application, then check whether your PC can actually support the memory type, capacity and module configuration you intend to install.

Windows 11 RAM requirements: 4 GB is the floor, not a target

Microsoft’s current Windows 11 system-requirements page lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum. That figure answers a narrow question: whether a computer meets the operating system’s published baseline. It does not promise comfortable multitasking, modern games, creative applications or local AI work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft also cautions that particular apps, features and additional hardware can require more than the operating-system minimum. Windows must share memory with the desktop, background services, security software, browsers and every application you open. On a 4 GB machine, the system can therefore reach its limit before you start demanding work.

What 4 GB can and cannot tell you

  • It can tell you: the computer meets the listed Windows 11 RAM minimum, assuming every other Windows requirement is satisfied.
  • It cannot tell you: that the PC will be responsive with many browser tabs, modern games, virtual machines, editing software or AI tools.
  • It does not define: the graphics memory, storage speed, processor, security hardware or other requirements Windows 11 also needs.

For a new Windows 11 purchase, treat 4 GB as a compatibility figure only. If the computer will be used for ordinary work as well as Windows itself, choose capacity according to those applications rather than buying to the minimum.

A practical capacity guide by workload

The table below separates published requirements from planning guidance. The guidance is a way to evaluate a configuration; it is not a substitute for the requirements of a named application or game.

Use case Published figure in the cited specifications How to use that figure
Windows 11 installation and operation 4 GB minimum (Microsoft Windows 11 requirements page, accessed 2026) Eligibility floor only. It is not a recommendation for multitasking.
Copilot+ PC certification 16 GB DDR5 or LPDDR5, plus a compatible NPU rated at 40+ TOPS and at least 256 GB storage (Microsoft specification, accessed 2026) A certification specification for a broader hardware platform, not a universal local-AI requirement.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on Steam 16 GB minimum; 32 GB recommended (Steam listing, accessed 2026) Use the 32 GB tier when targeting the publisher’s recommended configuration for this title.
Microsoft Flight Simulator published specification table 8 GB minimum; 16 GB recommended; 32 GB ideal (table updated August 18, 2026) These are tiers for the configurations shown by that source, not a rule for every game.

How much RAM should a Windows 11 computer have?

When 4 GB is relevant

Four gigabytes is relevant when checking an existing computer against Microsoft’s minimum or evaluating a very limited single-purpose device. It is a poor basis for a general-purpose purchase because the operating system, browser and background processes compete for the same small pool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a general-purpose capacity

For a new PC, start with the applications you expect to run together: a browser with many tabs, office software, communications, cloud-sync utilities, security tools and perhaps a photo editor. The Windows requirement does not provide a capacity for that combination. A sensible decision therefore comes from the applications’ own requirements and from leaving headroom for simultaneous use, not from multiplying the 4 GB minimum.

Before buying, verify whether the advertised capacity is installed as one module or two, whether any memory is reserved for integrated graphics, and whether the machine permits an upgrade. A nominal capacity can be less useful if the design leaves no expansion path.

Gaming RAM: why the game matters more than a universal number

Game requirements vary with the title, world size, texture settings, operating-system overhead, launcher and what else is open. The cited Flight Simulator figures show the spread clearly. Its Steam listing names 16 GB as the minimum and 32 GB as recommended, while a Microsoft specification table presents 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB as minimum, recommended and ideal tiers for its listed configurations.

Interpreting minimum, recommended and ideal

  • Minimum generally describes the lowest configuration the publisher supports for starting or playing under defined conditions. It is not a promise of the best frame rate or highest settings.
  • Recommended is the publisher’s more suitable target for the stated configuration. It can still depend on resolution, graphics settings, add-ons and background applications.
  • Ideal is a higher tier in the Microsoft table. It should be read as specific to that game’s published scenario, not as a universal requirement for all PC games.

When 16 GB makes sense

Sixteen gigabytes is the minimum listed for Flight Simulator 2024 on Steam and the recommended tier in Microsoft’s other table. It can therefore be a reasonable starting point for a gaming build whose target titles list 16 GB and whose owner is not also running unusually heavy workloads. Check every major game’s current requirements before assuming that tier will cover a whole library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When 32 GB is the safer target

Choose a 32 GB configuration when a game lists it as recommended or ideal, when you stream or record while playing, or when you routinely keep browsers, launchers, voice chat and other demanding programs open. Flight Simulator 2024 provides a documented example of a game with a 32 GB recommended tier. That evidence supports planning for this title; it does not establish that every game needs 32 GB.

Do not confuse system RAM with graphics memory

A game’s requirement for system RAM is separate from its graphics-memory requirement. A graphics card’s VRAM, shared memory behavior and driver requirements can limit performance even when the computer has ample system RAM. Read the processor, GPU, VRAM, storage and RAM requirements together.

AI workloads: Copilot+ is a platform specification, not an all-purpose RAM calculator

Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC specification calls for 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5. It also requires a compatible neural processing unit rated at 40+ trillion operations per second (TOPS) and at least 256 GB of storage. These figures define a broader class of hardware; the RAM number should not be detached from the NPU, storage and other qualifying requirements.

  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

Microsoft also states that some PCs that do not meet all Copilot+ requirements can still support compatible first- and third-party applications that run AI workloads locally. Its description is about compatibility and potential responsiveness, not a claim that one amount of RAM runs every local model.

Why local AI capacity is application-specific

Memory demand changes with the model’s parameter count, numerical precision or quantization, context length, runtime, operating system and whether the workload uses system RAM, graphics memory or both. The available specifications do not establish a universal RAM figure for named local models, image generators, transcription tools or other AI applications.

For that reason, do not label 16 GB, 32 GB or any other tier as “the RAM needed for AI” without naming the model and configuration. Instead, consult the documentation for the exact application and note whether it gives a minimum, a recommended amount, a GPU-memory requirement or a combined system-memory requirement.

A useful AI buying decision

  1. Identify the model and application you will run locally, including its version and operating mode.
  2. Read its current hardware documentation for system RAM, VRAM, processor instructions, NPU or GPU support, storage and operating-system requirements.
  3. Check whether the workload runs entirely in system memory or offloads layers to a GPU or NPU.
  4. Allow memory for Windows and any browser, editor, development environment or data-processing tools that will remain open.
  5. Confirm that the computer’s memory is upgradeable. Many thin laptops use soldered LPDDR memory, so a later capacity increase may be impossible.

How to compare RAM options before buying

Check the memory generation and form factor

RAM capacity alone is not enough. Copilot+ specifications distinguish DDR5 and LPDDR5, and a desktop, gaming laptop and ultrathin laptop may use different physical formats. A module that has the right capacity can still be electrically or physically incompatible.

Confirm the platform limit

Read the computer or motherboard manual for maximum supported capacity, supported memory generations and speeds, number of slots, and any limits that apply when slots are fully populated. If the system has soldered memory, the advertised capacity may be fixed.

  • Supports on-die ECC for more stable systems.
  • Upgraded capacity for powerful multitasking.
  • Lifetime warranty. ※Refer to the latest version on the official website. In case of discrepancies, the official website prevails.

Look for an upgrade path

  • Count installed and free memory slots.
  • Check whether the current modules can be replaced or must be matched.
  • Confirm the maximum capacity per slot as well as the total maximum.
  • Check whether adding a second module enables the platform’s intended memory-channel configuration.
  • Back up important data before opening a desktop or laptop and follow the manufacturer’s service procedure.

Budget for the capacity you actually need

A “32GB DDR5 RAM kit” can be a relevant search description for a compatible desktop upgrade because one cited game lists 32 GB as recommended and another table lists 32 GB as ideal. It is not a universal shopping instruction. Verify the system’s memory type, module format, supported speed, slot count, maximum capacity and upgradeability before ordering.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: buying to the Windows minimum

Fix: Use 4 GB only to answer the Windows eligibility question. Build the purchase around your applications and simultaneous workload.

Mistake: treating one game’s recommendation as a gaming standard

Fix: Check the requirements for the games you actually play. The two published Flight Simulator tables do not even present identical tiers, which is a reminder to read the exact source, edition and configuration.

Mistake: assuming Copilot+ equals a universal AI requirement

Fix: Separate certification from workload support. Confirm the model and application’s own RAM, VRAM, NPU and GPU guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: ignoring non-RAM bottlenecks

Fix: Evaluate CPU, GPU, VRAM, storage, cooling, drivers and network needs alongside memory. More RAM cannot compensate for an unsupported graphics API, an underpowered GPU or insufficient storage.

Mistake: adding memory without checking compatibility

Fix: Use the motherboard or PC documentation, not just the capacity printed on a retail listing. Check generation, form factor, supported configurations and whether memory is soldered.

A quick decision framework

  1. Only checking Windows 11 compatibility? Compare the PC with Microsoft’s full requirements; 4 GB is the published RAM minimum.
  2. Buying a general-purpose Windows PC? List the applications you run together and choose capacity with room beyond the operating-system floor.
  3. Building for a specific game? Use that game’s current minimum and recommended tiers. For Flight Simulator 2024, the Steam listing is 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommended.
  4. Targeting Copilot+ features? Confirm the complete specification: 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5, a qualifying 40+ TOPS NPU and at least 256 GB storage, plus the remaining platform requirements.
  5. Running local AI? Find the exact model and application documentation. Do not infer a universal RAM target from the Copilot+ label.
  6. Upgrading an existing machine? Confirm memory type, slots, maximum capacity and upgradeability before purchasing modules.

Bottom line for Windows 11, gaming and AI

Windows 11 can be installed with 4 GB of RAM according to Microsoft’s published minimum, but that number is not a practical all-purpose recommendation. Gaming capacity must follow the individual title: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 lists 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommended, while another Microsoft table for Flight Simulator shows 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB tiers. Copilot+ PCs specify 16 GB DDR5 or LPDDR5 alongside a 40+ TOPS NPU and 256 GB storage, but that certification does not define the memory needed by every local AI model. Match RAM to the exact workload and verify the complete hardware configuration before you buy or upgrade.
