For a first local-AI laptop, 16GB of RAM is a reasonable starting point for smaller models and modest use. Choose 24GB–32GB or more if you want additional room for larger models, longer prompts, or other apps running at the same time. These are planning tiers, not guarantees: the model’s size and quantization, context length, runtime, graphics memory, and operating system all affect what will fit and how well it will run.

How much laptop memory should you plan for?

There is no single RAM number that makes every local AI model work well. A model must fit alongside its runtime and conversation context, while the operating system and other open applications also use memory. The practical question is not only “How large is the model?” but also “How much memory is available to the model on this particular laptop, for this workload?”

As a starting point, plan around these tiers:

  • 8GB: A constrained option for small models and modest context sizes. LM Studio says an 8GB Mac may still run its application with smaller models and modest context, but this is not a promise that every model or workflow will fit. Its current guidance recommends more memory for Apple Silicon Macs. See LM Studio’s system requirements.
  • 16GB: A reasonable baseline for trying smaller local models. LM Studio recommends at least 16GB on Windows and 16GB or more on Apple Silicon Macs. On Windows, its guidance also recommends at least 4GB of dedicated GPU VRAM; system RAM and VRAM are separate pools.
  • 24GB–32GB: A more comfortable planning range if you want to explore medium-sized models, allow more room for context, or keep ordinary desktop applications open. It is not a compatibility or speed guarantee.
  • 36GB–48GB and above: Consider higher capacities when targeting substantially larger models. Even a high memory figure does not establish that a laptop will run a particular model quickly: graphics support, memory bandwidth, runtime compatibility, and cooling also matter.

These ranges describe capacity planning, not a universal minimum. A smaller quantized model with a short context may work on a laptop that cannot accommodate a larger or higher-precision model. Conversely, a system that can load a model may still feel slow or run short of memory when the context grows or other applications are active.

Why model file size is not the whole RAM requirement

A model’s weights are only one part of its memory footprint. While generating an answer, the runtime also needs space for the model’s working state and the conversation context. The operating system, background processes, browser tabs, and other applications compete for the same available memory. As a result, a downloaded model’s file size is not a complete estimate of how much RAM a laptop needs to run it.

Weights and quantization

Model names often include a parameter count, such as 8B or 14B. That count describes the model’s scale; it does not directly tell you how much memory the whole workload will use. The saved weights’ format matters too. Quantization stores weights at reduced precision, which can make them substantially smaller than higher-precision versions. When choosing a model, check the specific downloadable format rather than relying on the parameter count alone.

Smaller weights can make a model fit on less memory, but “fits” is not the same as “runs at a useful speed” or “supports the context length you want.” The runtime and hardware determine how the work is executed, and some memory must remain available for everything outside the weights.

Context and the KV cache

The context window is the amount of text the model can take into account for a conversation or task. The runtime retains information about tokens in that context in a structure commonly called the KV cache. As context length increases, that cache uses more memory. A long document, extended conversation, or large prompt can therefore raise memory use even though the model weights have not changed.

Ivo Donker’s August 7, 2026 guide to local models on Apple Silicon gives an illustrative estimate for an 8B model: at 8,192 tokens, KV-cache use is often under 1GB, while 32,768- or 128,000-token contexts can use several additional gigabytes. These are estimates, not guarantees across model architectures, quantization choices, or runtimes. A laptop that handles short chats may have a different memory margin for long-document work.

Runtime and other applications

The local-AI application or runtime is another part of the workload. LM Studio’s documentation describes local workflows and runtimes, but the exact memory use depends on the model and configuration being run. At the same time, macOS or Windows needs memory, as do applications you keep open. Available memory is therefore less than the laptop’s installed capacity.

Approximate model-weight estimates for Apple Silicon

The following estimates are for Q4 model weights in Ivo Donker’s guide, dated August 7, 2026. The guide says it was compiled with AI assistance, so treat these as practical planning figures rather than official vendor requirements. They are estimates for weights alone—not total system memory—and actual needs vary with architecture, context, runtime, and other applications.

Model size Approximate Q4 weight size Guide’s suggested system capacity
3B–4B parameters About 2.5–3.5GB 8GB systems
7B–8B parameters About 5.0–5.5GB 16GB systems
13B–14B parameters About 9.0–10.0GB 24GB or 32GB systems
32B–34B parameters About 20.0–22.0GB At least 36GB or 48GB
70B parameters About 40.0–43.0GB At least 64GB or 128GB

The suggested capacities are not derived by adding a fixed amount to each weight estimate. A computer also needs room for the context cache, macOS, the runtime, and other software. For example, a model whose weights occupy several gigabytes can require materially more memory when used with a long context. The estimates also apply specifically to the guide’s Q4 examples; they should not be treated as file-size or RAM figures for every version of a similarly named model.

How RAM works differently on Mac and Windows laptops

Apple Silicon: one shared memory pool

On Apple Silicon, CPU and GPU use unified memory rather than separate pools of system RAM and dedicated graphics memory. The model, GPU work, macOS, and other applications all draw from that shared pool. Thus, an installed capacity such as 16GB does not mean all 16GB is free for model weights and context. Leave room for the rest of the system, especially if you intend to run a large model or use a long context.

When comparing Apple Silicon configurations, look at total unified memory and the exact model and workload you expect to use. A larger pool can make more models or longer contexts feasible, but it does not by itself determine generation speed.

Windows: system RAM and dedicated VRAM are distinct

On a Windows laptop with a dedicated graphics card, system RAM and GPU VRAM are separate resources. LM Studio’s published Windows requirements recommend at least 16GB of system RAM and at least 4GB of dedicated VRAM. A laptop meeting those minimums may still be constrained by a particular model, context, runtime, or configuration.

If the model and its working data exceed available GPU memory, some work may be handled partly through system memory and the CPU, depending on the software and setup. That can affect performance. Windows Central reported a simple test in which increasing context for selected models shifted some computation from GPU to CPU and reduced measured token throughput. The publisher described its testing as illustrative rather than in-depth scientific benchmarking, so those observed rates should not be generalized to other laptops.

When shopping for a Windows laptop, do not add VRAM and system RAM together as though they were one interchangeable pool. Check both specifications, along with whether the software and model can use the GPU in the way you expect.

How to choose a laptop for your local-AI workload

  1. Choose the workload first. Decide whether you mainly want short chats with smaller models, work with long documents, or experiment with larger models. The context and model size you intend to use affect capacity needs.
  2. Identify the exact model and format. Check its parameter count and the downloadable quantization or precision. Do not estimate total RAM from a model label or download size alone.
  3. Check the memory architecture. For Apple Silicon, note total unified memory. For Windows systems with dedicated graphics, check system RAM and GPU VRAM separately.
  4. Allow room for the rest of the laptop. The operating system, runtime, and other open applications use memory too. A model that barely fits under ideal conditions may leave little margin for a real workload.
  5. Verify software support and performance factors. Confirm that the intended runtime supports the model and relevant hardware. Memory capacity affects whether a workload can fit, while memory bandwidth, GPU support, and cooling influence how quickly it runs.
  6. Check the exact laptop’s upgrade options before buying. Do not assume memory can be upgraded later. Upgradeability varies by model, and the available evidence does not establish options for every laptop.

A laptop advertised with 32GB can be a plausible choice if you want more headroom than a 16GB configuration. But capacity alone cannot establish which model it will support, how long a prompt it will handle, or how fast it will generate. Those answers depend on the full configuration and workload.

What to do when a model does not fit or runs slowly

Memory pressure and slow generation are not the same problem. First identify which constraint is most likely, then adjust the workload rather than assuming more installed RAM is the only fix.

  • The model will not load or the system runs short of memory: Try a smaller model or a more compact quantized version, reduce the context length, and close applications that are not needed. These changes reduce the workload’s demand, though the exact result depends on the runtime and model.
  • A short chat works but a long prompt causes trouble: Reduce the context setting or split the task into shorter chunks. The context cache grows with the amount of retained text, so the same model can place a heavier demand on memory during long-context use.
  • A Windows model appears to use the CPU despite a graphics card: Check dedicated VRAM, model and runtime compatibility, and the application’s device configuration. A GPU’s presence does not by itself mean the whole model and context fit in VRAM.
  • The model loads but responds slowly: Consider GPU support, memory bandwidth, and cooling as well as capacity. Increasing RAM may not resolve a performance bottleneck caused by another part of the system.
  • Performance changes with other software open: Close memory-heavy applications and retest the same model and context. That can help distinguish a tight system-memory budget from a model or hardware limitation.

These are diagnostic steps, not guarantees. A runtime can expose different settings, and exact behavior varies across laptop hardware and model implementations.

Bottom line for a laptop purchase

Use 16GB as a reasonable entry point for smaller local models, not as a promise that every local-AI task will fit. If you want more flexibility for larger models, longer contexts, and everyday apps running alongside the model, plan for 24GB–32GB or more and verify the memory architecture and exact laptop specifications. Choose based on the model and workload you actually expect to run—not RAM capacity in isolation.
