There is no single RAM number that guarantees a good experience for gaming, streaming, and work. Use the software and game requirements as a floor, then size memory for everything you run at the same time. As practical reference points, 16 GB is a sensible baseline for many HD-editing and multitasking situations, while Adobe recommends 32 GB or more for 4K-and-higher editing on Windows. Streaming has no universal RAM requirement: encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and the rest of your system matter.
The short answer: start with the workload, not a magic number
RAM, or system memory, holds the operating system, running applications, game data, browser tabs, project files and background services that need quick access. Capacity is only one part of performance; processor speed, graphics hardware, storage and software settings also affect results. More RAM does not automatically raise frame rates or make every export faster.
For a computer used across all three activities, think in tiers:

- 4 GB: Microsoft lists 4 GB or greater as the minimum memory requirement for installing or upgrading to Windows 11. That is an operating-system floor, not a practical target for modern games, streaming or simultaneous work.
- 8 GB: Some individual games and applications list it as a minimum. It can suit light office work or a narrowly defined workload, but leaves less headroom for multitasking.
- 16 GB: A useful starting point for many gaming setups, HD media work and several applications open together. Adobe’s FAQ describes 16 GB as “a good baseline if you plan to run multiple applications simultaneously.”
- 32 GB or more: Adobe recommends this level for 4K and higher video editing on Windows. It also provides more room for large projects and concurrent applications, but it is not a universal requirement for every game or stream.
Those figures are reference points from named software and operating-system documentation, not a standardized test of every computer. Your target should match the game, application version, operating system and whether the computer must perform several jobs at once.

Published requirements and what they actually mean

Minimum and recommended labels are easy to misread. A minimum usually describes the lowest supported configuration for a particular program or game under stated conditions. It is not a promise of smooth multitasking, high settings or long-term suitability.
Gaming: size memory for the game plus everything around it
Playing one game by itself
Start with the game’s own system requirements for your operating system and graphics settings. The Capcom example lists 8 GB as minimum and 16 GB as recommended, but it would be misleading to apply that specification to all games. Check the exact title before buying or upgrading.
Game launchers, anti-cheat tools, voice chat, browser tabs and hardware-monitoring utilities also consume memory. A computer that meets a game’s listed recommendation may still feel constrained when several of those programs run together. Keep the game’s requirement as the baseline, then add capacity for the applications you intentionally keep open.

Gaming with browsers, chat and launchers
Concurrency is the important question. If you switch between a game and a browser with many tabs, a chat client, a launcher and recording software, the system must keep all of those working sets in memory. When available RAM becomes tight, the operating system may move data to storage, which can produce pauses or slow application switching. The exact impact depends on the software, storage device and workload, so there is no honest universal “gaming plus browser” number.

Do not confuse RAM with VRAM
System RAM is the memory installed on the motherboard or included as unified memory in some systems. VRAM is memory on, or allocated to, the graphics processor. A game can run out of VRAM because textures and rendering settings exceed the graphics device’s capacity even when system RAM is plentiful. Conversely, adding system RAM does not increase a graphics card’s VRAM. Check both specifications when diagnosing stutter or a game that refuses a setting.
Streaming: why no single RAM recommendation exists
Streaming from the same computer as the game
One computer may run the game, OBS, an encoder, alerts, chat, a browser and sometimes a camera or audio-processing plug-in. Memory demand therefore depends on the specific game, scene collection and the applications you leave open. OBS’s official system-requirements article does not publish a universal RAM figure. It emphasizes that CPU requirements change with the encoder, output resolution, frame rate and scene complexity, and warns that compatibility alone does not guarantee streaming or recording capability.
That caveat is important: choosing a larger RAM kit cannot compensate for an overloaded processor, insufficient graphics performance, an unsuitable encoder setting or an unstable network connection. Treat memory as one part of a complete streaming configuration.

With a dedicated streaming machine, the gaming computer no longer carries the game and broadcast workload together. The streaming computer still needs enough memory for OBS, scenes, sources and any chat or production applications you run, but its requirement is governed by that machine’s actual software and settings. The division of labor can change the amount of memory needed on each system; it does not create a universal figure.

How to test before buying memory
Run a representative stream rather than relying on a specification alone. Open the game, your normal browser and chat applications, start OBS with the intended scene collection, and watch memory usage and OBS’s statistics panel during the busiest part of play. Look for dropped frames, rendering or encoding warnings, application crashes and sustained memory pressure. If memory is not near capacity but frames or encoding lag, investigate the CPU, GPU, encoder and network instead of assuming more RAM is the fix.
Work and creative applications
Office, research and ordinary multitasking
Document editing, email, spreadsheets and a moderate number of browser tabs are lighter than high-resolution video work. The right capacity depends on how many programs and tabs you keep open, the size of your files and whether another user or background process shares the computer. Adobe’s 16 GB multitasking baseline is a useful reference when your definition of “work” includes several applications simultaneously, but it is not an operating-system rule.
Video editing with Adobe Premiere
Adobe’s Premiere 26.0 requirements provide the clearest workload-specific guidance in the available documentation:

- Adobe’s Apple-silicon table recommends 16 GB of unified memory.
Resolution is only one variable. Timeline complexity, effects, multicamera work, background exports and other open applications can raise demand. The 32 GB recommendation should be read as Adobe’s guidance for 4K-and-higher editing, not proof that every 4K project needs exactly that amount or that additional memory alone will accelerate every operation.

Apple silicon and unified memory
On Apple silicon systems, memory is unified: the processor and graphics hardware draw from the same pool. You cannot treat the 16 GB recommendation as interchangeable with a removable 16 GB laptop module. Confirm the computer’s unified-memory configuration before purchase, because Apple-silicon memory is generally selected at system purchase rather than upgraded like conventional desktop DIMMs or laptop SO-DIMMs.
A practical decision framework
Use this sequence to choose a target without turning one software requirement into a universal rule.
- List the heaviest named application. Record its version, operating system and published minimum and recommended memory. For Premiere 26.0, distinguish HD from 4K-and-higher media.
- List simultaneous tasks. Include the game, OBS, browser tabs, voice chat, launchers, editors, file synchronization and anything that must stay open while you work.
- Separate the computers involved. A game-and-stream setup on one PC has a different concurrency problem from a game on one machine and OBS on another.
- Check the platform. Determine whether the system uses upgradeable RAM or unified memory, and verify the memory generation, form factor, maximum supported capacity and available slots.
- Measure the real workload. Reproduce your busiest session and observe memory use, application warnings and system responsiveness. Record whether the problem is capacity, processor load, graphics load, storage activity or network performance.
- Buy headroom only for a reason. Choose additional capacity when your measured workload regularly approaches the installed amount, when applications warn about memory pressure, or when your planned software has a higher stated recommendation. Do not buy solely because a larger number sounds faster.
How to check memory usage
Windows 11
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Performance, then Memory to see installed capacity, current use, speed and the number of slots in use.
- Open Processes and sort by the Memory column to identify applications consuming the most RAM.
- Repeat the check while the game, OBS and your normal work applications are all running. A reading taken immediately after startup does not represent your peak workload.
macOS
- Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities.
- Choose the Memory tab and observe memory pressure while reproducing your normal workflow.
- On Apple silicon, remember that the displayed unified memory is shared with graphics tasks; closing one application may not eliminate a graphics or CPU bottleneck.
OBS
Use OBS’s statistics view during a representative broadcast. Memory readings should be considered alongside rendering lag, encoding lag and dropped frames. If those counters indicate a different bottleneck, a RAM upgrade may not address the failure.

Planning an upgrade
Desktop computers
Desktops often use replaceable DIMMs, but compatibility is not automatic. Check the motherboard or system manual for supported memory generation, maximum capacity, per-slot limits, channel configuration and whether existing modules must be matched. A compatible upgrade kit is a product path, not a universal model recommendation.

Laptops
Some laptops have accessible SO-DIMM slots; others solder some or all memory to the board. Verify upgradeability before opening the chassis. Confirm the number of slots, whether one is already occupied, the maximum supported capacity and the exact memory type. A module that fits physically can still be unsupported electrically or by the firmware.
Unified-memory systems
Systems with unified memory, including Apple silicon Macs, require a configuration decision at purchase in many cases. You generally cannot solve a later capacity shortfall by installing a module. Choose the configuration based on the largest application and the simultaneous tasks you expect over the computer’s useful life.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Using the Windows minimum as a gaming target: 4 GB only establishes the Windows 11 installation floor. Check the game and your concurrent applications.
- Applying one game’s recommendation to every game: The Capcom example is title-specific. Read the requirements for the exact game and version.
- Assuming more RAM fixes every stream problem: OBS identifies encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity as important variables. Test CPU, GPU, network and encoder settings as well.
- Confusing RAM and VRAM: Check graphics-memory requirements separately from system-memory capacity.
- Buying without checking upgradeability: Verify slots, form factor, memory generation and maximum capacity before ordering a kit.
- Comparing different workloads as if they were benchmarks: The published figures are software requirements and recommendations, not a cross-workload laboratory study. Use measurements from your own busiest session.
Bottom line
For a mixed-use computer, 16 GB is a defensible starting point when your games, HD media work and multitasking fit within that capacity. Move toward 32 GB or more when your Windows editing workload is 4K or higher, your projects are large, or your measured concurrent workload regularly exhausts 16 GB. Streaming cannot be assigned an honest universal RAM number from the available documentation, so validate the complete game-and-OBS setup and upgrade only after identifying memory pressure. Always check the exact software requirements and the computer’s upgrade or unified-memory design before purchasing.
