For most modern gaming PCs, 16 GB of RAM is a reasonable starting point. If you also run a game, streaming or recording software, chat, and browser tabs on the same computer, 32 GB can provide more headroom. For everyday tasks, Microsoft Support recommends 8 GB for longer-term use; 16 GB or more may suit demanding photo or video projects. These are practical guideposts, not guarantees: the right capacity depends on what you run together and what your computer supports.
RAM recommendations by workload
RAM is the computer’s short-term working memory. The amount you need depends less on the label “gaming PC” or “everyday computer” than on the programs and tasks active at the same time. A game running alone puts a different load on a system than the same game alongside streaming software, a browser, chat, and other tools.
The figures below come from vendor guidance, not a single universal standard or a measurement of what every person uses. Treat them as starting points, then check the requirements for your particular computer and applications. They are not statistics about the average gamer or streamer, and they do not guarantee a particular level of speed.

| Workload | Capacity guidance | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Basic browsing, documents, or online video | At least 4 GB | Microsoft Support’s basic-use guidance; not a recommended gaming configuration. |
| General everyday use | 8 GB | Microsoft Support recommends this for keeping a device running long term. Actual comfort depends on the apps and tasks open together. |
| Photo or video editing and other high-performance projects | 16 GB or more | Microsoft Support says this may be a good fit for higher-performance work. |
| Modern games | At least 16 GB | Intel’s gaming guidance; Intel advises considering more when multitasking. |
| Gaming with chat, browsers, or streaming tools | 32 GB can help | Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance presents this as added multitasking room, not a requirement for every game or streamer. |
| OBS Studio application listing | 4 GB minimum; 8 GB recommended | The OBS Studio Steam listing gives these app-level figures. They do not specify the total memory needed for a game-and-streaming setup. |
Microsoft lists 4 GB or greater as the Windows 11 installation or upgrade minimum. An operating-system minimum is a compatibility threshold, not a comfortable target for a modern gaming or multitasking system. In particular, the Windows figure answers whether a computer meets a stated OS requirement; it does not account for the memory demands of games, creative apps, or other programs used at the same time.

How to choose between 16 GB and 32 GB
Choose 16 GB as a practical gaming baseline
If you primarily play games and keep other demanding programs closed, 16 GB is a reasonable place to start based on Intel’s recommendation for modern games and Microsoft’s gaming-PC guidance. It is not a promise that every game will run well: performance also depends on the game, processor, graphics hardware, software settings, and the specific computer.
Before buying, check the requirements for the games you actually play. A general recommendation cannot replace a title’s own requirements, especially if you are planning a new build or upgrading a system with limited capacity. Check the documentation for your system or processor as well: Intel specifically advises using those details when choosing memory. A capacity recommendation is a starting point, not permission to buy any kit with that number on the label.
Consider 32 GB when several tools run together
More memory can be useful when your gaming session includes additional applications, such as voice chat, browser tabs, streaming or recording tools, and other background tasks. Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance specifically identifies Discord, browsers, and streaming tools as examples of software that can make 32 GB helpful.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That makes 32 GB a headroom choice, not a universal threshold. If your usual workload is a game with only a few lightweight tasks alongside it, you may not need to buy more just because you stream occasionally. Conversely, a crowded multitasking setup may benefit from extra capacity even if the game itself is unchanged. Think about what you keep open during a typical session, not simply whether you identify as a gamer or streamer.
Do not use resolution alone to pick a capacity
The guidance available here does not establish a rule that a particular screen resolution requires a particular amount of RAM. Select capacity around your combined workload and the limits of your platform rather than assuming resolution alone determines the answer. For a decision tailored to your setup, the game and software requirements, the number of demanding applications you run concurrently, and the supported capacity of your computer are more useful checks than resolution by itself.

Gaming and streaming on one PC: size the combined workload
When one computer runs a game and a stream, the relevant question is not simply “How much RAM does OBS need?” It is how much memory the whole set of active programs needs together. That can include the game, OBS, browser sources, chat, and other tools. A figure for one application does not automatically describe the combined setup.
The OBS Studio Steam listing states 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended for the application. Those values are not a recommendation for a PC simultaneously running OBS and a game, and they do not promise that a stream will be smooth. OBS Project’s official system requirements page gives no RAM target and cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The page is dated August 25, 2021.
OBS also notes that streaming capability depends on broader system characteristics, including the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. If a stream struggles, adding RAM is not guaranteed to solve it; memory is one possible constraint among several. Do not assume a memory upgrade will automatically increase game frame rates or fix dropped or poor-quality streaming. Check the configuration and requirements of the software you use, and consider whether the symptom points to a broader system limitation.
For practical sizing, treat the gaming-plus-streaming setup as one workload: include the programs and browser sources you actually keep open, rather than adding up app-level minimums as if those values described simultaneous use. If you are deciding between 16 GB and 32 GB, Microsoft’s guidance supports 32 GB as useful extra room for chat, browsers, or streaming tools, but not as a mandatory capacity for every broadcast.
Check actual memory use before upgrading
If your computer already meets a general capacity guidepost but feels slow, first look at what it is doing during the workload that matters to you. A reading from a quiet desktop session will not tell you whether there is enough capacity during a game-and-stream session. The goal is to observe memory while your typical combination of applications is active, not to infer the answer from one idle reading.

- Start the game and the supporting programs you normally use at the same time, including chat, browser tabs, streaming or recording software, and any browser sources.
- While that workload is active, check your operating system’s memory-use display. Observe whether memory use remains comfortable or is consistently near the system’s available capacity; the exact display and terminology vary by operating system.
- Repeat the check during a representative session rather than basing a purchase on one unusually light or unusually busy moment.
- If memory is frequently under pressure in the workload you want to improve, consider whether a compatible capacity upgrade is possible. If not, reduce simultaneous programs or review the specific application settings and requirements.
This check is a practical decision aid, not a guarantee that RAM is the cause of poor performance. OBS’s own guidance highlights multiple factors affecting streaming, so investigate the symptoms and configuration rather than treating capacity as the only possible explanation. A memory reading helps you decide whether capacity deserves attention; it does not identify every cause of slowdowns or stream problems on its own.
Check compatibility before buying RAM
The correct memory depends on the computer or motherboard. Intel advises checking the system or processor documentation when selecting RAM. Before ordering a kit, confirm the memory generation, form factor, supported maximum capacity, and whether the system can be upgraded at all. These checks matter even when you have already decided how much total capacity you want.
- Memory generation: Confirm the type your device accepts; memory generations are not interchangeable by assumption.
- Form factor: Check which physical module style the computer requires. A desktop and a laptop may use different module types.
- Supported capacity: Verify the maximum capacity supported by the computer, motherboard, or processor documentation, and whether that limit applies to each slot or the full system.
- Upgradeability: Some laptops may have memory that cannot be upgraded. Confirm the design of the exact model before purchasing modules.
Because the computer model is not specified, no particular kit can be identified as universally compatible. Search for a compatible capacity only after checking the device documentation; a kit advertised as 32 GB is useful only if the platform supports its type and configuration. If the documentation does not make the limit or module type clear, verify those details for the exact model before ordering rather than relying on a general gaming recommendation.
Common RAM-sizing mistakes
Confusing the Windows minimum with a useful target
Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is about meeting the stated installation or upgrade requirement. It should not be read as advice that 4 GB is enough for comfortable modern gaming, streaming, or broad multitasking. Microsoft Support’s basic-use guidance and the Windows 11 OS minimum answer different questions.
Treating an app’s minimum as a whole-PC recommendation
An application requirement describes that application in its stated context. OBS’s Steam listing does not establish the amount needed for the game, OBS, chat, browser, and other active tools together. Nor does meeting the listing’s application figures ensure that a particular system can stream or record successfully.

Assuming every streamer needs the same capacity
Streaming setups vary in their concurrent applications and scene complexity. The available guidance supports 32 GB as potentially helpful for multitasking, not as a universal minimum for everyone who broadcasts. The amount that makes sense depends on whether you run chat, browser sources, recording tools, or other applications alongside the game.
Buying before checking system limits
A capacity recommendation is useful only if the computer supports the memory type and amount. Confirm the platform details first, particularly with laptops, where upgrade options can differ from desktop systems. A memory kit’s advertised capacity alone does not establish compatibility with your specific computer.

Is 16 GB of RAM enough for modern gaming?
Intel recommends at least 16 GB for modern games, making it a reasonable starting point. It is not a guarantee for every game or system; check the requirements for the games you play and your computer’s documentation. Intel advises considering more memory if you multitask.
Do I need 32 GB of RAM to game and stream?
Not necessarily. Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance says 32 GB can help when you run Discord, browsers, or streaming tools alongside games. It is extra multitasking headroom, not a universal minimum for every game or streamer. Consider your typical combined workload and check actual memory use before upgrading.
Are OBS’s 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended figures enough for gaming and streaming?
Those are the OBS Studio Steam listing’s application-level figures; they do not size a computer running OBS, a game, chat, browser sources, and other tools at once. OBS Project’s official system-requirements page does not specify a RAM target and says compatibility alone does not guarantee streaming or recording capability.
Does a Windows 11 minimum of 4 GB mean 4 GB is enough for gaming?
No. Microsoft Learn lists 4 GB or greater as the Windows 11 installation or upgrade minimum. That operating-system threshold is not a gaming or multitasking comfort recommendation. Intel’s guidance for modern games is at least 16 GB.
Should I upgrade RAM if my game or stream is slow?
Only if memory capacity is a meaningful constraint for your workload. Check memory use while running the game and your usual supporting apps. OBS notes that streaming also depends on factors such as the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, so adding RAM is not guaranteed to improve frame rates or fix stream problems.
What should I check before buying a RAM kit?
Use your computer, motherboard, or processor documentation to verify the supported memory generation, module form factor, maximum capacity, and whether memory is upgradeable. Laptop modules and upgrade options can differ from desktop systems, and some laptops cannot be upgraded. No kit is universally compatible with every computer.
The Bottom Line
For modern gaming, use 16 GB as a practical starting point; consider 32 GB if you regularly run chat, browsers, streaming, or recording tools alongside games. For everyday use, Microsoft Support recommends 8 GB for longer-term use, with 16 GB or more potentially suiting demanding creative work. Check your actual workload and your computer’s memory limits before buying: an OS or app minimum is not a whole-PC recommendation, and extra RAM is not a guaranteed fix for every performance problem.
