For a Windows PC, 16 GB is a reasonable starting point for gaming and lighter streaming; 32 GB gives you more room to game while streaming or editing, and is Adobe’s recommendation for Premiere workflows using 4K or higher media. Those are practical planning targets, not universal requirements: the right capacity depends on your game, other running apps, editing workload, and whether your computer can be upgraded. Apple silicon Macs use unified memory, so Windows desktop RAM advice does not translate into buying a replaceable memory kit.

Start with the workload, not the biggest number

RAM, or system memory, is working space that the operating system and open applications use while your computer is running. Gaming, streaming, and content creation can compete for that space because they may be active at the same time. A figure listed as the minimum for Windows or one application describes that software’s stated floor; it does not establish how much memory a whole PC needs to run several demanding tasks comfortably.

For a first-pass decision on a Windows computer, use the workload table below. The numbers are recommendations drawn from the named sources, not results from a single comparative test. Your specific game, editing application, and system configuration may call for a different choice.

What you plan to do Useful planning target What the figure means
Gaming, or gaming with lighter background use 16 GB A practical starting point, not a guarantee for every game or setup. HP’s 2026 gaming guide describes at least 16 GB DDR5 as a starting point for a gaming PC.
Gaming while streaming 32 GB HP lists 32 GB for a gaming-plus-streaming configuration. Treat this as that manufacturer’s guidance rather than a requirement for every game, stream, or encoder.
Premiere editing of HD media on Windows 16 GB recommended Adobe Premiere’s requirements for version 26.x list 16 GB for HD. Adobe separately lists an 8 GB minimum.
Premiere editing of 4K or higher media on Windows 32 GB or more recommended Adobe’s Premiere 26.x guidance recommends 32 GB or more for 4K and higher workflows.
Premiere on Apple silicon 16 GB unified memory recommended Adobe lists 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended unified memory. This is not a recommendation to install desktop memory modules.

Microsoft’s 4 GB Windows 11 minimum and OBS’s software listing figures—4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended for Windows—belong in a different category. They describe stated operating-system or application requirements, not a complete gaming-and-streaming PC target. OBS Project’s official requirements page makes the distinction explicit: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The page is dated August 25, 2021.

How much RAM do you need for gaming?

For gaming on a Windows PC, 16 GB is a sensible entry point based on the cited manufacturer guidance. It is not a promise that every current or future game will run ideally at that capacity. The evidence here does not establish a universal RAM requirement across games, nor does it include independent tests comparing game performance at different capacities. Check the current system requirements for the particular game you want to play, especially if it is an edge case for your machine.

Also account for what will be open alongside the game. A game running by itself is a different workload from a game accompanied by a browser, voice chat, a launcher, recording software, or other applications. The more simultaneous work you expect, the less useful a game-only minimum is as a guide to your complete setup. If you routinely combine gaming with other demanding tasks, 32 GB is the more flexible planning target in the available guidance.

Do not confuse capacity with speed

This guidance addresses capacity: how much memory is available. The sources do not establish a universal RAM speed or timing recommendation, and they do not show that faster memory can compensate for insufficient capacity. Check your computer or motherboard documentation for supported memory specifications rather than assuming that a speed claim solves a shortage of RAM.

Is 16 GB enough for gaming and streaming?

It can be a reasonable starting point for gaming and lighter streaming, but the sources do not establish that 16 GB is enough for every combination of game, stream settings, and background apps. HP’s 2026 guide places 32 GB on its gaming-plus-streaming configuration. Use that as a practical sign that streaming alongside a game can change the planning target, not as a universal pass-or-fail threshold.

Streaming also depends on more than RAM. OBS says CPU needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its Auto Configuration Wizard can help users configure OBS, but neither a compatible computer nor meeting a software listing’s memory figure guarantees good streaming or recording performance. If a stream struggles, memory capacity is only one possible part of the system to investigate; the cited guidance does not support treating every streaming problem as a RAM problem.

The OBS Steam listing states 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended for Windows. Those are listing requirements for OBS itself, not a recommendation for running OBS, a game, and other applications together. Do not add the listing numbers to a game recommendation or interpret them as a whole-system target.

How much RAM do you need for video editing and content creation?

For Premiere on Windows, Adobe’s current requirements for version 26.x provide the clearest resolution-based guide: 16 GB recommended for HD media, and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher. Adobe lists 8 GB as the minimum, while describing that minimum as for HD editing. The larger 4K figure is Adobe’s recommendation for that editing workflow; it is not a guarantee about every project, application, or creative task.

This distinction matters when deciding whether to buy a computer or upgrade one. Someone editing HD media in Premiere and someone editing 4K-and-higher media are not described by the same recommended capacity. If your work includes different resolutions or several applications open together, plan around the heaviest workflow you actually expect to perform, rather than using the minimum as a target for every project.

“Content creation” covers more than Premiere editing. The available figures do not establish RAM recommendations for every creative application or task, so do not transfer Adobe’s Premiere guidance to unrelated software as though it were a universal standard. Check the current requirements published for the specific application and media workflow you use.

What changes on Apple silicon Macs?

Apple silicon systems use unified memory rather than the desktop or laptop RAM modules discussed in a typical Windows PC upgrade. Adobe’s Premiere 26.x requirements list 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended unified memory for Apple silicon. Those values are specific to Adobe’s Premiere guidance; they do not imply that the Mac has a replaceable DIMM or SO-DIMM slot.

For a Mac purchase decision, compare the installed unified memory with the applications and work you intend to do, and check the relevant computer and application specifications before buying. Do not use instructions for installing desktop memory in a Mac with Apple silicon.

How to choose an upgrade without buying incompatible RAM

A capacity target is not a compatibility check. The cited recommendations do not identify a kit that fits a particular desktop or laptop. Before purchasing memory, confirm all four items with your system or motherboard manufacturer:

  • DDR generation: Verify the supported memory generation. A capacity recommendation does not tell you which generation your computer accepts.
  • Form factor: Determine whether the system uses desktop DIMMs or laptop SO-DIMMs. They are different physical module formats.
  • Supported capacity: Check the maximum capacity supported by the exact computer or motherboard, as well as any per-slot limit the manufacturer documents.
  • Available slots: Check how many memory slots are present and in use. A laptop or desktop may not have the open slots you expect, and a system’s configuration can affect which upgrade is possible.

Use the exact computer model or motherboard model when consulting the manufacturer’s specifications. A general recommendation such as 32 GB DDR5 describes a category-level target; it does not confirm that a given machine supports DDR5, accepts a two-module kit, or has room for the proposed capacity. If the system is a laptop, verify its supported format and upgrade options rather than assuming its memory is removable. For Apple silicon, follow the unified-memory distinction above instead of shopping for modules.

A practical decision process

  1. List the workload you need to support. Decide whether the priority is gaming alone, gaming with streaming software and other apps, HD editing, or 4K-and-higher editing. Include simultaneous tasks rather than considering each application in isolation.
  2. Use the closest relevant recommendation. Treat 16 GB as a Windows gaming starting point, 32 GB as HP’s gaming-plus-streaming guidance, and Adobe’s HD or 4K Premiere figures as application-specific recommendations. Do not treat a minimum as a comfortable target.
  3. Check the exact software requirements. Look up the current requirements for the game and creative application in question. Software versions and workloads differ, and the sources cited here do not establish a requirement for every game or creative tool.
  4. Identify the computer’s memory type and limits. Consult the manufacturer for the exact machine or motherboard to verify generation, form factor, supported capacity, and slots before ordering anything.
  5. Decide whether an upgrade is actually possible. Windows desktop and laptop systems can differ in their upgrade options; Apple silicon uses unified memory. Do not assume that a larger target can be reached by adding a module to every computer.

Common RAM-planning mistakes

Using the Windows minimum as a gaming recommendation

Microsoft lists 4 GB as the Windows 11 minimum system requirement, accessed October 9, 2026. That figure establishes the operating system’s stated minimum, not an appropriate target for gaming, streaming, or video editing. Likewise, meeting a single application’s minimum does not define the needs of the full workload.

Reading OBS’s listing as a streaming-PC specification

The 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended figures on OBS’s Windows Steam listing describe OBS as software. They do not account for a game running at the same time, and OBS itself cautions that compatibility does not ensure adequate streaming or recording capability. Consider the whole workload and the CPU factors OBS identifies instead of using the listing as a complete build specification.

Assuming every creator needs the 4K recommendation

Adobe’s 32 GB-or-more recommendation applies to Premiere 26.x editing 4K and higher media on Windows. Its recommendation for HD is 16 GB. Match the figure to the media and application rather than treating one workflow-specific recommendation as a universal rule for all content creation.

Buying by capacity alone

A kit’s advertised capacity cannot establish whether it fits your device. A mismatch in DDR generation or physical format, or a system capacity limit, can make the proposed purchase unsuitable. Verify compatibility for the exact system first.

What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you

The available figures come from different kinds of source and should not be blended into one supposedly universal threshold. Microsoft’s 4 GB figure is an operating-system minimum. OBS’s 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended values are Windows software listing requirements. HP’s 16 GB DDR5 gaming starting point and 32 GB gaming-plus-streaming configuration are manufacturer guidance. Adobe’s Premiere values are application recommendations tied to media resolution and platform. None is an independent study measuring universal RAM needs across games, streaming, and content creation.

That distinction is useful rather than inconvenient: it tells you which figure answers which question. Use operating-system requirements to check whether the OS’s stated floor is met, application requirements for that application and workload, and manufacturer guidance as a planning reference. For an individual game or a creative program other than Premiere, consult that product’s current specifications instead of assuming the numbers in one category automatically apply to another.
