For a new general-purpose laptop or desktop, 16 GB of RAM is the sensible target when your budget allows. Choose 8 GB for lighter work or a budget system, and consider 32 GB or more for demanding photo and video editing, 4K media, or gaming while several heavy applications remain open. Windows 11 can run with 4 GB, but that is an eligibility minimum—not a comfortable buying recommendation.
What RAM does and why capacity matters
Random-access memory (RAM) is the computer’s short-term working space. The operating system, open applications and the files they are actively using are held in RAM so the processor can access them quickly. When the active workload needs more memory than is available, the system moves some data to storage. That can make switching applications, editing large files or loading a busy game feel less responsive.
Capacity is only one part of performance. A faster processor, graphics processor, storage drive and cooling system also affect results. More RAM cannot compensate for an underpowered CPU or GPU, and adding memory does not automatically increase a game’s frame rate. Its main benefit is providing enough working space for the applications and files you actually run at the same time.

How much RAM does a laptop need?
8 GB: suitable for light use and lower-cost systems
Eight gigabytes can work for web browsing, documents, online video, email and modest multitasking. It is the sensible lower-cost choice when you normally keep a small number of applications open and do not edit large photos or video. Microsoft Support says that “8 GB of memory is recommended to keep your device running long term.” That is broad consumer guidance, not a promise that every 8 GB laptop will feel equally fast.

Modern browsers can use substantial memory when many tabs, web applications or extensions remain open. An 8 GB machine may therefore need more discipline: close unused tabs, avoid running several large applications together and leave free storage space for the operating system’s virtual-memory files.
16 GB: the practical target for a new laptop
Sixteen gigabytes gives a general-use laptop considerably more room for browser tabs, office software, meetings, messaging, light creative work and background utilities. It is the best default recommendation for most people buying a new laptop today, provided the price difference is reasonable. Microsoft’s consumer guidance places 16 GB or more in the category of photo/video editing and other high-performance projects.
Choose 16 GB rather than 8 GB when you expect to keep the laptop for several years, routinely multitask, use large spreadsheets, run development tools or connect an external display while working. These are workload-based reasons for extra headroom; they are not a claim that every program will run twice as fast.
32 GB or more: for demanding laptop workloads
Thirty-two gigabytes becomes worthwhile for serious photo work, editing high-resolution video, virtual machines, large software projects, 3D content creation or heavy multitasking. If your applications’ published recommendations reach 32 GB, treat that figure as a starting point and allow additional capacity for the operating system and other programs you keep open.

How much RAM does a desktop need?
General home and office desktops
The same workload rules apply to desktops. An 8 GB desktop can handle basic browsing, documents and streaming, but 16 GB is a more balanced configuration for a new general-purpose system. Desktop cases often make future upgrades easier than thin laptops, yet an upgrade is not guaranteed: the motherboard may have a limited number of slots, a maximum supported capacity or a requirement to use specific memory generations.
Workstations and creator desktops
Use the applications and media you handle as the deciding factor. Adobe lists 8 GB as the minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended for Photoshop 27.x and later. For Photoshop and Premiere Elements 2027, Adobe recommends 16 GB for HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K media. Those figures apply to the named applications and versions; they are not universal requirements for every photo or video program.
Large layered images, long timelines, high-resolution source files and simultaneous encoding or compositing can all increase memory demand. If your workflow routinely approaches the recommended capacity, moving to the next tier is more useful than relying on the application’s minimum.
How much RAM does a gaming PC need?
16 GB is a sensible starting point
For a gaming PC, 16 GB is a practical starting configuration for a broad range of current games and normal background use. The exact requirement belongs to each game: publishers may specify different minimum and recommended capacities, and those requirements can change with updates. Check the game’s current system-requirements page before building or upgrading.

When 32 GB makes sense
Consider 32 GB when you stream or record while playing, keep a browser with many tabs open, run voice chat and other creative tools, use mods that increase memory use, or want more headroom for demanding future games. This is a capacity choice for concurrent workloads and smoother multitasking—not a promise of higher frames per second by itself.
Frame rates are usually constrained by the game engine, graphics hardware, processor, resolution and quality settings. If a game already fits comfortably in 16 GB, installing 32 GB may not change average frame rates. It can still reduce pressure when other programs compete for memory.
Minimum requirements versus a comfortable recommendation
Minimum specifications answer “Will this software install or start under the stated conditions?” A practical recommendation answers “How much room should I buy so normal work remains comfortable?” Confusing the two leads to underspecified computers.

Choosing RAM by workload
Browsing, documents and online video
Start at 8 GB if the budget is tight and your use is light. Choose 16 GB if you keep many tabs open, use browser-based business tools, attend video meetings while working in documents or expect to keep the computer for years.
Photo editing
For Photoshop 27.x and later, Adobe’s published minimum is 8 GB and its recommendation is 16 GB or more. Large layered documents, high-resolution images and other open applications can make the recommended tier more comfortable than the minimum.
HD and 4K video
Adobe’s Photoshop and Premiere Elements 2027 specifications recommend 16 GB for HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K media. Keep the resolution qualification attached to the number: a 4K recommendation should not be presented as a requirement for every video project.

Multitasking and professional tools
Virtual machines, software development environments, 3D applications and simultaneous creative tools can each reserve memory. List the programs you use together, then compare their requirements and add room for the operating system and background services. If you cannot identify a clear workload, 16 GB is the safer new-PC target than 8 GB.
Before buying or upgrading RAM
A capacity recommendation does not certify that a particular module will fit your computer. Confirm compatibility before ordering a 16 GB or 32 GB kit.
- Identify the exact computer: record the laptop make and model, or the desktop motherboard model. Similar-looking systems can use different memory.
- Check upgradeability: consult the manufacturer’s service manual or specifications to see whether RAM is replaceable, partially soldered or fully soldered. Some laptops cannot be upgraded after purchase.
- Confirm the memory generation and form factor: laptops generally require a small-form-factor module, while desktops use a different physical format. The memory generation must also match the system; modules are not universally interchangeable.
- Check slot count and maximum capacity: find the number of available slots and the motherboard or laptop’s supported maximum. A 32 GB kit may exceed the platform limit even if the processor is powerful enough.
- Verify the configuration: determine whether the system performs best with one module or a matched pair and whether existing modules can be mixed. Follow the manufacturer’s supported combinations rather than assuming any generic kit will work.
- Install safely: shut down fully, disconnect power, follow the service instructions and ground yourself before handling modules. After installation, confirm that the operating system reports the expected capacity and run the computer’s built-in memory diagnostic if problems appear.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying for the operating-system minimum: 4 GB may satisfy Windows 11’s requirement but leaves little room for applications. Treat it as a floor, not a target.
- Assuming more RAM fixes every slowdown: If memory use is not the constraint, a faster SSD, processor, graphics card, software update or cooling solution may matter more.
- Using a universal upgrade kit: Form factor, generation, speed support, slot layout and maximum capacity must match the exact machine.
- Ignoring soldered memory: Many thin laptops have no user-replaceable modules. Check before purchase, and select the capacity you will need for the device’s useful life.
- Turning an application recommendation into a universal rule: Adobe’s 32 GB figure is specifically tied to 4K media in Photoshop and Premiere Elements 2027. Other programs and resolutions can differ.
- Expecting automatic gaming gains: More capacity can help when other applications are open, but it does not guarantee higher frame rates in a game that already has enough RAM.
A simple buying decision
- Choose 8 GB only when your work is light, your budget is constrained and the computer is upgradeable or you accept a shorter comfort margin.
- Choose 16 GB for most new laptops and desktops, ordinary multitasking, and gaming systems where you want a sensible balance of capacity and headroom.
- Choose 32 GB or more for 4K editing, demanding creative applications, virtual machines, serious multitasking or gaming alongside several heavy programs.
- Recheck the exact software requirements for your games and professional applications before finalising the configuration.
- Confirm hardware compatibility before buying an upgrade kit, especially for laptops and compact desktops.
Bottom line
For most people buying a new laptop or desktop, 16 GB is the right default. Eight gigabytes remains reasonable for light use and lower-cost systems, while 32 GB or more is justified by 4K media, demanding creative work, virtual machines or gaming combined with other heavy applications. Use published software requirements to refine the choice, and verify that the computer can actually accept the memory before you buy it.
