For most new gaming PCs, 32 GB of RAM is the sensible target. Sixteen GB still runs many games, particularly when you keep background applications modest. Sixty-four GB is an optional capacity for heavy multitasking, streaming, modding, or content-creation workloads—not a general gaming requirement established by current testing.
RAM capacity prevents memory pressure; it does not automatically raise frame rates. Your game, graphics settings, background software, and the limits of your CPU, GPU, and storage determine whether additional memory is useful.
Quick answer: choose 16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB?
| Capacity | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 16 GB | Budget builds and gaming with a light background workload | Enough for many current games; some demanding titles and multitasking situations leave less headroom. |
| 32 GB | Most new gaming-focused desktops | A practical buffer for modern games, browsers, voice chat, launchers, mods, and recording tools. |
| 64 GB | Gaming plus substantial creation, virtual machines, large mod sets, or unusually heavy multitasking | Extra capacity for specific workloads; current evidence does not show a universal gaming-performance gain over 32 GB. |
If you are building from scratch and the rest of the platform supports it, 32 GB is the balanced starting point. If you already own 16 GB and your games run smoothly without memory pressure, an upgrade is not automatically necessary. Move to 64 GB because your workload needs it, not because a larger number guarantees more FPS.
Why there is no single RAM requirement for every game
Game developers publish requirements for a particular title, graphics preset, resolution, and target performance. A normal recommended configuration can require substantially less memory than a high-ray-tracing 4K mode in the same game. Background applications and mods also change the amount available to the game.

Activision’s current requirements illustrate the spread. For Modern Warfare 4, the listed recommended configuration for 90-FPS multiplayer on high settings uses 16 GB, while its high-ray-tracing 4K configuration lists 32 GB. Black Ops 7 lists 12 GB for high settings and 16 GB for its Competitive/Ultra 4K tier. These are game-specific configurations, and Activision notes that its specifications can change.
Those figures are not contradictory. They describe different engines, presets, and targets. Check the requirement for the exact game mode and quality setting you intend to use rather than treating one title’s number as a universal rule.
Is 16 GB enough for gaming?
Often, yes. Sixteen GB can still be enough when you are playing one game, using ordinary settings, and keeping other programs under control. TechSpot reported similar performance at 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB in several tested games. Its examples included Marvel Rivals, Borderlands 4, and The Outer Worlds 2.
That result does not mean every game behaves identically. A 16 GB system has less room for a browser with many tabs, voice chat, launchers, capture software, mods, or creative applications. When the combined workload exceeds available memory, Windows may move data between RAM and storage, which can show up as hitching or inconsistent frame times even when an average-FPS number looks acceptable.

TechSpot’s testing also found a meaningful distinction at 8 GB: the cited games showed stutter or frame-time problems at that capacity. That is a warning against confusing “the game starts” with “the game has enough memory for a smooth experience.” Sixteen GB is a materially safer floor than 8 GB for a modern gaming PC, but it is not a promise that every new release will remain comfortable at that capacity.
When 16 GB remains a sensible choice
- You play a defined library whose official requirements fit within 16 GB.
- You close unnecessary browser tabs, launchers, and creative applications while playing.
- Your existing system shows no memory-related stutter during your normal sessions.
- Your budget is better spent first on a stronger graphics card, processor, or solid-state storage that addresses a measured bottleneck.
Why 32 GB is the practical target for most new builds
Thirty-two GB gives a game more room to coexist with Windows and the applications people commonly leave open. Browsers, voice chat, game launchers, streaming or recording tools, mods, and an occasional editor all consume memory alongside the game. The benefit is headroom and fewer compromises, not an automatic increase in rendering performance.
Official requirements already reach 32 GB for some high-end configurations: Activision lists it for Modern Warfare 4’s high-ray-tracing 4K tier. That does not make 32 GB mandatory for the game’s other presets, but it shows why a new system aimed at demanding settings may be better served by 32 GB than by a tightly fitted 16 GB kit.

The capacity alone is not enough to select a kit: the memory generation, module type, speed support, motherboard layout, and processor memory controller must all match your platform.

Who benefits most from 32 GB
- Players targeting high or ultra settings, high refresh rates, or ray tracing while keeping other software open.
- People who stream, record, use overlays, or run a browser and chat client during games.
- Mod-heavy players and anyone moving between several large modern games.
- Builders who want a comfortable current configuration without paying for capacity their workload cannot use.
Should you buy 64 GB for gaming?
For a gaming-only machine, 64 GB is optional. The cited TechSpot tests did not establish a general performance advantage for 64 GB over 32 GB; in the tested examples, 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB produced similar results, while 8 GB was the capacity associated with the reported stutter and frame-time issues.
Sixty-four GB becomes easier to justify when gaming is only one part of the workload. Large creative projects, simultaneous recording and editing, virtual machines, development tools, unusually extensive mod packs, or many memory-heavy applications can consume the extra capacity. In those cases, the purchase is about keeping the whole workload in memory and avoiding disruptive closures or paging—not about a guaranteed higher frame rate.
Questions to answer before choosing 64 GB
- Which application or combination of applications is currently exhausting your available memory?
- Can you reproduce the problem while running your usual game and background workload?
- Does your motherboard provide the required slots and support the intended total capacity and memory generation?
- Would the same budget address a more limiting component, such as a graphics-card or processor bottleneck?
Does more RAM increase FPS?
Not by itself. If a game already has enough available memory, adding capacity does not make the CPU or GPU render frames faster. TechSpot’s controlled examples are useful here: it used one 64 GB DDR5 kit and limited how much memory Windows 11 could address to simulate lower capacities. In several selected titles, reported performance was similar at 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMore RAM can improve the experience indirectly when the previous capacity was insufficient. It may reduce stutter, prevent background applications from competing with the game, and improve frame-time consistency. Those are workload-dependent gains, not a universal FPS multiplier. If your graphics card is at full utilization or your processor is the limiting component, installing more RAM will not remove that bottleneck.

Average FPS versus smoothness
Average FPS can hide short pauses. Memory pressure may appear as spikes in frame time, texture or asset delays, or stutter when moving through a game world. A capacity upgrade is most defensible when you can connect those symptoms to your actual memory use, rather than assuming that a larger specification must be faster.
How to decide from your own system
- List the games and presets you actually use. Read each publisher’s current requirements for the intended mode, resolution, and quality level. Note that requirements can change after launch.
- Reproduce your normal workload. Start the game, load a representative scene or match, and leave the browser, voice chat, streaming tools, mods, and other software you normally use running.
- Observe memory pressure. Use Windows’ built-in performance view, such as Task Manager, while the problem is occurring. Look at total memory use, paging activity, and whether the symptom is stutter or a different bottleneck. The available sources do not establish a single percentage threshold that applies to every PC.
- Identify the limiting component. Compare the observed memory behavior with CPU and GPU utilization, temperatures, and storage activity. A graphics or processor limit requires a different upgrade from a memory limit.
- Check the upgrade path. Confirm the motherboard and CPU support the memory generation and total capacity, identify the number of populated and free slots, and verify the module arrangement recommended by the board manual.
- Compare the current cost of compatible kits. Prices and inventory change; evaluate the actual kit available for your platform rather than assuming a fixed premium for one capacity.
Game requirements you can use as reference points
| Game and configuration | Memory listed | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Modern Warfare 4 — recommended 90-FPS multiplayer, high settings | 16 GB | A game-specific recommended configuration. |
| Modern Warfare 4 — high-ray-tracing 4K | 32 GB | A higher-end preset with a higher listed capacity; Activision says specifications can change. |
| Black Ops 7 — high settings | 12 GB | Shows that recommended memory differs by title and preset. |
| Black Ops 7 — Competitive/Ultra 4K | 16 GB | A different target from the game’s high-settings recommendation. |
Use these numbers as examples of how requirements are scoped, not as a substitute for checking the current page for your own game.

Desktop RAM is not universally interchangeable. Before ordering, verify all of the following in your motherboard and processor documentation:
- The supported memory generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5; modules from different generations are not interchangeable.
- The supported module type and physical format for the board.
- The maximum total capacity and the number of slots.
- Whether a two-module kit is preferred for the board’s memory-channel layout.
- Any vendor-qualified speed or capacity limitations when all slots are populated.
If you are upgrading an existing PC, matching the current kit’s specifications can reduce compatibility surprises, but the motherboard manual remains the authority. A 32 GB DDR5 2×16 GB kit is a useful search description only when the system actually supports DDR5 and that arrangement.

Do not use Windows’ minimum as your gaming target
Microsoft lists 4 GB or greater as the minimum memory requirement for Windows 11 installation or upgrade. That number describes the operating system’s minimum, not a recommendation for modern games. A PC can meet the Windows requirement and still lack the capacity needed for a game, background applications, and smooth frame times.
What the Steam survey does—and does not—tell you
Tom’s Hardware reported that the Steam Hardware Survey for September 2026 showed 42.22% of surveyed units with 32 GB and 37.82% with 16 GB. These are shares of surveyed machines, not performance requirements and not an estimate of every gamer. Survey popularity can show what people have installed; it cannot determine what your games, settings, and multitasking habits require. Monthly results are also volatile and should be checked against the original survey when exact methodology or a current chart matters.
A capacity choice by player profile
Budget-conscious or existing 16 GB owner
Keep 16 GB if your games meet their requirements and your normal session is smooth. Upgrade when you can reproduce stutter or paging with your usual workload, or when a specific title’s configuration calls for more.

Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying by FPS expectation: Capacity does not replace a faster GPU or CPU when those components are the bottleneck.
- Using one game’s requirement for every title: Presets and target resolutions change the listed memory.
- Ignoring background software: The game is only one consumer of RAM.
- Focusing on capacity while ignoring compatibility: Generation, slots, total limits, and module layout determine whether the kit works.
- Treating survey shares as recommendations: What surveyed systems contain is not proof of what an individual player needs.
- Assuming a larger kit fixes every stutter: Frame-time problems can also come from the GPU, CPU, drivers, storage, or game engine.
