Windows 11’s official minimum is 4 GB of RAM and a 64 GB or larger storage device. Those figures are installation and compatibility floors, not a guarantee of comfortable multitasking, large applications, games, creative work, or long-term update headroom.

Whether a computer “runs well” depends on the programs you use, how many browser tabs and apps stay open, available free space, and the processor, graphics, firmware, and security hardware in the PC. Treat Microsoft’s minimum as a starting checkpoint, then judge your own workload and the machine’s upgrade options.

Microsoft’s official Windows 11 minimums

Microsoft lists two memory and storage requirements for the general Windows 11 operating system:

Component Official minimum What the figure means
RAM 4 GB The minimum system memory for installing or upgrading Windows 11; it is not a universal comfort recommendation.
Storage device 64 GB or larger The minimum device capacity. It does not mean 64 GB will remain free for your files, applications, and updates.

These numbers answer “Can the PC meet the documented floor?” more reliably than they answer “Will every task feel smooth?” Microsoft also notes that individual features and applications can require more than the operating-system minimum and that performance scales with more capable PCs.

A computer can therefore satisfy the 4 GB and 64 GB thresholds and still feel constrained when several demanding programs run together. Conversely, a computer with more memory and a larger drive can still be unsuitable if its processor, graphics hardware, firmware, or security features do not meet Windows 11’s other requirements.

Why the minimum is not the same as running well

RAM is the working area Windows and applications use while they are running. Keeping a browser, office software, communications apps, and background services open consumes more of that working area than running one simple program. When the active workload exceeds available memory, Windows has to manage data more aggressively, and switching between programs can become less responsive. The exact point at which that happens depends on the applications, documents, browser tabs, and background processes involved.

Storage has a different job. The internal system drive holds Windows, installed applications, updates, user profiles, and often temporary files. A 64 GB device can meet the capacity requirement while leaving much less usable room after the operating system and applications are installed. Windows’ size and the free space required by updates vary with several factors, and installed applications and updates continually change the amount available.

For that reason, there is no Microsoft-published, one-number definition of “enough RAM to run well” for every Windows 11 user, nor a universal storage buffer that applies to every PC. A sensible assessment starts with your workload and the space shown on your own computer rather than with a generic recommendation.

Match memory to the work you actually do

Light, single-task use

Web browsing with a modest number of tabs, writing documents, viewing email, and changing basic settings represent lighter workloads. A PC at the 4 GB floor may be able to install and start Windows 11, but the minimum leaves little margin for several applications, large browser sessions, or background software. If the machine regularly pauses when you switch windows, the first question is whether memory is being exhausted by the programs you keep open.

Everyday multitasking

Keeping many browser tabs, a document editor, meetings or messaging software, cloud synchronisation, and security tools open increases demand. In this situation, the practical requirement is workload-dependent: the more applications that remain active, the more valuable additional RAM becomes. Instead of assuming a fixed “recommended” number, observe whether the computer is consistently short of memory during your normal routine.

Creative applications, games, and virtual machines

Photo and video projects, large development environments, modern games, and virtual machines can all demand substantially more resources than basic office work. Their own publishers may specify requirements above Microsoft’s Windows minimum. Check each application’s current system requirements, then allow for Windows and other programs that must remain open at the same time. RAM alone cannot compensate for an unsuitable processor or graphics system.

How to observe memory pressure

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  2. Select Performance, then Memory, while your usual applications are running.
  3. Repeat the check during the busiest part of your normal workday, not only immediately after startup.
  4. Note whether memory usage stays near the installed total and whether the computer becomes slow when you open another program. Use that observation to decide whether closing software, reducing browser tabs, or investigating an upgrade is appropriate.

This is a snapshot of your workload, not a universal benchmark. A different set of applications can produce a different result on the same PC.

Understand what 64 GB of storage does—and does not—promise

The 64 GB requirement describes the size of the storage device, not the amount of empty space you will have after installation. Windows occupies part of that capacity, and update packages may need temporary working room. The amount varies by Windows version, update state, optional features, installed drivers, applications, and personal files.

Check the actual free space before deciding that a drive is adequate:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose System, then Storage.
  3. Review the total capacity, available space, and the categories using the most room.
  4. Recheck after installing major applications or updates; free space changes over time.

If the system drive is nearly full, Windows may have less room for updates and temporary operations. Removing unused applications and moving personal files can create room, but those actions do not increase the drive’s physical capacity. An external drive can store files separately; it does not enlarge the internal drive that contains Windows and its updates.

When upgrading makes sense

Microsoft says some PCs can be upgraded with additional RAM and that some undersized drives can be replaced. “Some” is important: many laptops use soldered memory, have no free memory slot, restrict supported capacities, or use a storage format that is not user-replaceable. Desktop systems vary as well.

Upgrade question RAM Internal storage
Compatibility Check memory generation, module format, slot count, supported capacity, and the computer maker’s service documentation. Check the drive interface, physical form factor, supported capacity, and whether the bay or connector is serviceable.
What improves More working space for simultaneous applications, if the system supports the added memory. More room for Windows, applications, updates, and files when the original device is undersized.
What it cannot fix An incompatible processor, inadequate graphics hardware, or an unsupported Windows 11 configuration. Slowdowns caused by insufficient RAM, processor limits, or unsupported hardware.
Serviceability May be upgradeable, limited, or soldered depending on the exact model. May be replaceable, difficult to access, or permanently integrated depending on the exact model.

Before purchasing anything, find the exact model number and consult the manufacturer’s specifications or service guide. A generic memory kit or internal SSD cannot be declared compatible without that information. Capacity, interface, form factor, memory type, slot availability, and supported limits all matter.

RAM-upgrade checklist

  • Identify whether the existing memory is soldered or installed in removable modules.
  • Confirm the memory generation and module format required by the motherboard.
  • Check how many slots are present and the maximum supported capacity.
  • Verify whether the manufacturer requires matched modules or lists particular configurations.
  • Back up important data and follow the service manual’s power-down and static-electricity precautions.

Storage-upgrade checklist

  • Determine whether the computer accepts a replaceable internal drive.
  • Match the required interface and physical form factor.
  • Check the manufacturer’s supported capacity and installation instructions.
  • Plan how Windows and your data will be transferred or reinstalled.
  • Keep a backup before opening the computer or replacing the system drive.

If the hardware cannot be upgraded, practical alternatives include uninstalling software you no longer use, moving personal files to separate storage, and choosing applications that fit the available resources. Those measures improve available space or workload management but do not change the official hardware limits.

Copilot+ PCs have separate requirements

Microsoft lists a higher baseline for the Copilot+ PC category: 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 RAM and a 256 GB SSD or UFS device. These figures apply to PCs marketed as Copilot+ PCs; they are not Windows 11’s general minimums and should not be presented as a universal requirement for every Windows 11 computer.

A PC can therefore meet Windows 11’s 4 GB and 64 GB floor without qualifying as a Copilot+ PC. Conversely, meeting the Copilot+ memory and storage figures does not by itself prove that every application will perform well.

Check Windows 11 eligibility beyond RAM and storage

Memory and disk capacity are only two parts of Microsoft’s compatibility list. Windows 11 also requires a compatible processor, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a qualifying display.

  1. Install or open Microsoft’s PC Health Check app on the Windows 10 PC you are evaluating.
  2. Run the compatibility check and review which requirement passes or fails.
  3. If memory or storage is the issue, consult the manufacturer’s upgrade documentation rather than assuming an upgrade is possible.
  4. If the processor, TPM, firmware, graphics, or display fails, adding RAM or a larger drive will not make that component compliant.

This check prevents a common mistake: treating a memory or storage upgrade as a complete Windows 11 eligibility solution.

Practical decisions for common situations

Your situation Most useful next step Reason
The PC has less than 4 GB of RAM Check the model’s upgradeability and run PC Health Check. It is below Microsoft’s documented memory floor, and the other eligibility requirements still apply.
The PC has 4 GB and feels slow with several apps open Measure memory use during the busiest routine and consult the manufacturer about supported RAM. The minimum allows installation but does not define comfortable multitasking.
The drive is 64 GB but nearly full Review Settings > System > Storage, remove unnecessary software or files, and investigate a compatible internal drive. Capacity and free space are different, and update needs vary.
An external drive has plenty of room Use it for personal files, but evaluate the internal system drive separately. External capacity does not enlarge the Windows installation drive.
You want Copilot+ features Check for the separate 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD/UFS category requirements. Copilot+ hardware requirements are higher than the general Windows 11 floor.
The PC fails a processor, TPM, Secure Boot, graphics, or display check Address that specific incompatibility or use a supported computer. RAM and storage upgrades cannot substitute for missing platform requirements.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Calling 4 GB “recommended” for everyone: describe it as Microsoft’s minimum and evaluate the reader’s workload separately.
  • Assuming 64 GB means 64 GB free: inspect actual available space and leave room for changing update and application needs.
  • Using Copilot+ figures as ordinary Windows 11 requirements: label them as a separate PC category.
  • Buying a random RAM kit or SSD: verify the exact computer model, interface, form factor, memory type, slots, and supported capacities first.
  • Assuming every laptop or desktop is upgradeable: check whether components are soldered, integrated, or serviceable.
  • Expecting memory or storage to solve every slowdown: processor, graphics, firmware, drivers, applications, and workload all influence the result.

The practical answer

Use 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage as the documented Windows 11 compatibility floor, not as a promise of a good experience. For a real “runs well” decision, measure memory during your heaviest normal use, inspect free space on the internal system drive, check every application’s requirements, and verify the PC’s complete Windows 11 eligibility. Upgrade only after confirming that the exact computer supports additional RAM or a replacement drive. That approach reflects Microsoft’s requirements without pretending that one specification fits every workload.
