For a lightweight desktop Linux installation, plan on at least 2 GB of RAM and about 20 GB of free storage. That is a planning target, not a universal minimum or a guarantee of smooth performance. A system with 4 GB of RAM has more room for browser tabs and several applications, while some choices require more: ChromeOS Flex lists 4 GB RAM, and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop lists 6 GB RAM for a comfortable experience.

There is no single minimum for every lightweight operating system

“Lightweight” describes an operating system’s design and typical resource use, not a single hardware specification. The actual requirement depends on the distribution, desktop environment, processor architecture, graphics hardware, drivers, applications and workload. A computer used only for a text editor needs less headroom than one running a browser with many tabs, video calls and office software at the same time.

Published requirements also use different terms. A minimum is a threshold at which installation or basic operation may be possible. A recommended or comfortable figure is a better planning target for daily work. Storage figures can mean free space needed by the installer, not the total capacity you should buy. Updates, applications, swap files, downloads and personal data all need additional room.

For the lightweight desktop examples covered here, 2 GB RAM and roughly 20 GB free space is a sensible starting point. Treat it as an editorial planning target synthesized from current published requirements, not as a vendor specification. If you can choose, 4 GB RAM and a larger drive provide useful margin.

Current requirements by operating system

Operating system Published minimum or requirement Comfort guidance Important qualification
Xubuntu 1 GB memory and 8.6 GB free disk space 2 GB memory and 20 GB free space for smoother use with multiple applications Requires a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor. Integrated graphics may need additional memory. The extra space allows applications and personal data as well as the core system.
Linux Mint 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk space 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk recommended for comfortable use These are distribution-level figures; they do not promise a particular workload’s performance.
ChromeOS Flex 4 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage No separate comfortable-use figure is stated in the installation guidance Requires an x86-64 Intel or AMD device and USB boot capability. Google guarantees functionality only on certified models.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free storage for a comfortable experience 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free storage is Canonical’s stated comfortable baseline Canonical suggests considering Xubuntu or Lubuntu on systems with 2 GB RAM or more. Ubuntu itself is not automatically lightweight simply because it is Linux.

The figures come from the respective organizations’ current requirement or installation pages. Requirements can change between releases, so check the target release immediately before installing.

How much RAM should you plan for?

1 GB: an installation threshold, not a comfortable target

Xubuntu lists 1 GB of memory as a minimum. At that level, the operating system may start and basic programs may run, but there is little room for a modern browser, large documents or several applications at once. Memory pressure can cause applications to pause while the system reclaims memory or uses disk-based swap, which is much slower than RAM.

2 GB: a practical floor for a light desktop

Two gigabytes is a reasonable starting point for a deliberately light desktop, especially when paired with a modest number of open applications. Xubuntu recommends 2 GB for smoother multiple-application use, and Linux Mint lists 2 GB as a requirement. This is still a constrained configuration: browser tabs, video conferencing, image editing and large office files can quickly consume the available headroom.

4 GB: more useful headroom

Four gigabytes gives everyday multitasking more breathing room. Linux Mint recommends 4 GB for comfortable use, and ChromeOS Flex requires 4 GB. It does not make an older processor faster, but it reduces the chance that routine multitasking will force the system to rely heavily on swap.

6 GB or more: required by some heavier desktops

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop specifies 6 GB of RAM for a comfortable experience. If your computer has only 2 GB, choosing a lighter desktop rather than trying to force a full-featured environment onto it is usually the more appropriate decision. RAM capacity cannot compensate for an unsupported processor, missing graphics driver or failing storage device.

How much storage is enough?

Separate free installation space from total drive capacity

“8.6 GB free disk space” for Xubuntu and “20 GB disk space” for Linux Mint describe space available to the installation, not the amount of storage that will remain for your files. A drive that barely meets the installer figure can become full after updates, applications, browser caches and documents are added. Keep meaningful free space after installation rather than treating the requirement as a target capacity.

What the published figures imply

  • Xubuntu: 8.6 GB free is the minimum; 20 GB free is recommended for multiple applications and personal data.
  • Linux Mint: 20 GB is listed as a requirement, while 100 GB is recommended for comfortable use.
  • ChromeOS Flex: 16 GB internal storage is the stated minimum. This figure is especially important on older devices with small eMMC drives.
  • Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop: 25 GB free storage is specified for a comfortable experience.

These numbers are not interchangeable promises. A 20 GB Linux installation may be adequate for a simple, mostly online setup but restrictive for local media, development tools or large downloads. Decide how much data will stay on the computer, then add that allowance to the operating system’s requirement.

When a larger drive matters more than extra RAM

If the current drive is nearly full, storage can become the immediate blocker: the installer may refuse to proceed, updates may fail, and the system has less room for temporary files. Replacing or expanding storage can help, but compatibility is model-specific. Check the computer’s drive interface, physical format, firmware support and whether the drive is replaceable before buying a part.

Compatibility checks beyond RAM and storage

Processor architecture

Xubuntu requires a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor. ChromeOS Flex likewise requires an x86-64 Intel or AMD device. A machine with enough RAM and disk space still cannot meet those requirements if its processor architecture is incompatible. Identify the exact CPU model before downloading an image.

Boot and firmware support

ChromeOS Flex requires USB boot capability. Other systems may also need a bootable USB option and appropriate firmware settings. Confirm that the computer can start from USB and that you know how to enter its firmware or boot menu. Secure Boot, legacy boot modes and storage-controller settings can affect whether an installer starts.

Graphics, drivers and certification

Xubuntu notes that integrated graphics may need more memory. ChromeOS Flex may work on non-certified models, but Google does not guarantee their performance, functionality or stability. Check the certified-model list for a specific device rather than assuming that matching the RAM and storage figures is enough.

CPU age and workload

RAM and storage are only two parts of the experience. An older dual-core processor, slow hard disk, unsupported Wi-Fi adapter or weak graphics chip can limit the result even when capacity requirements are met. Requirements are specifications, not comparative benchmarks; they do not establish that one operating system will be faster than another on your particular computer.

A practical way to choose an operating system for an old computer

  1. Record the hardware. Note the exact model, CPU, installed RAM, drive capacity and free space. In Linux, free -h shows memory and lsblk shows storage devices. In Windows, open Task Manager’s Performance tab for memory and disk details, then check the manufacturer’s specification page for the CPU and upgrade limits.
  2. Check architecture and boot support. Verify 64-bit Intel or AMD compatibility where required, confirm USB boot capability and look up firmware instructions for the model.
  3. Compare the target release’s minimum and comfort figures. Do not use an old community-wiki number as a current specification. In particular, historical Lubuntu guidance mentioning 128 MB for installation or 512 MB for usability is not current daily-use advice. Canonical’s current Ubuntu 26.04 notes say Xubuntu or Lubuntu may suit systems with 2 GB RAM or more, but they do not provide a current Lubuntu storage minimum.
  4. Estimate your workload. Count the applications you expect to keep open, browser use, local files and any development or media tools. Choose the comfort recommendation when your use is more than a single light task.
  5. Back up important data. Installing or repartitioning an operating system can erase existing partitions. Keep a separate copy of documents, photographs, credentials and recovery keys before changing the disk.
  6. Test before committing. Boot the installer’s live environment when available. Check Wi-Fi, audio, graphics, suspend, touchpads, external displays and USB devices. A live session is a compatibility check, not a performance guarantee, but it can expose missing drivers before installation.
  7. Install with deliberate storage choices. Confirm the destination drive, partition layout and encryption settings. Leave room for applications, updates and personal data rather than allocating every last gigabyte to the base installation.

What to do when the computer falls short

Below the RAM minimum

First verify whether memory is replaceable. Microsoft notes that some PCs have upgrade options and directs owners to the manufacturer or retailer; that guidance does not mean every laptop accepts an upgrade. Check the exact model’s supported memory generation, maximum capacity, slot count and whether memory is soldered. Only then compare the cost and effort of an upgrade with installing a lighter system or replacing the computer.

Enough RAM, but not enough free storage

Remove or move personal files only after making a backup, and do not delete system partitions blindly. If the drive itself is too small or failing, investigate a compatible replacement based on the computer model. No universal storage part fits every old laptop.

Meets the numbers but performs poorly

  • Check whether the live session or installed system is using the intended graphics and Wi-Fi drivers.
  • Close unneeded browser tabs and background applications to distinguish memory pressure from CPU limitations.
  • Inspect available free space; a nearly full drive can cause update and temporary-file failures.
  • Compare the workload with the operating system’s comfort guidance rather than its bare minimum.
  • For ChromeOS Flex, verify whether the model is certified. Non-certified hardware is not covered by Google’s performance, functionality or stability guarantee.

How the common choices differ

Xubuntu is the closest match to a low-resource desktop among these examples: its published minimum is 1 GB RAM and 8.6 GB free space, with 2 GB and 20 GB recommended for multiple applications. Linux Mint starts at 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk, then raises the comfort recommendation to 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk. ChromeOS Flex has a higher 4 GB RAM minimum and a 16 GB internal-storage requirement, plus architecture, USB-boot and certification conditions. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop calls for 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free storage for a comfortable experience, so it is not the natural fit for a 2 GB machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose by the whole requirement set, not by the smallest number in one column. A computer that satisfies Xubuntu’s RAM figure may still be unsuitable for ChromeOS Flex if it cannot boot from USB or is not supported hardware. Conversely, a machine with 6 GB RAM may still feel slow if its processor or hard drive is the bottleneck.

Bottom line for planning an installation

Use 2 GB RAM and about 20 GB free storage as a realistic starting point for a light Linux desktop, and prefer 4 GB RAM when you expect normal multitasking. Check the exact operating system’s current page for its minimum and recommended figures, then verify CPU architecture, firmware, graphics, drivers and device certification. Keep additional storage for applications, updates and personal files, and check the exact computer model before purchasing any RAM or drive upgrade.
