For a laptop used for browsing, documents, video calls and media, treat 8 GB of RAM as a practical starting point; choose 16 GB if you regularly multitask, keep many browser tabs open or expect to use demanding applications. Choose storage according to the applications and files you want to keep on the laptop: there is no single official capacity that suits every everyday user. Windows 11’s minimum requirements—4 GB of RAM and a 64 GB storage device—are installation requirements, not comfortable buying targets.

Start with the difference between RAM and storage

RAM and storage both affect how a laptop feels to use, but they solve different problems. RAM is the computer’s working memory: it holds the information that active applications need while you use them. Storage is where the operating system, installed applications, downloads and saved files live when the laptop is off.

That distinction matters when choosing a configuration. More RAM can help when you switch among applications or work with demanding software, but it does not provide room for more photos or documents. More storage can accommodate a larger local library, but it does not give active applications more working memory. Buying extra of one does not compensate for having too little of the other.

“Everyday use” is not a fixed technical workload. A person who opens a browser and a document at a time has different needs from someone who joins a video call while keeping many tabs, spreadsheets and other applications open. Use your own typical routine—not the word “everyday” alone—to size the laptop.

How much RAM is a sensible choice?

Microsoft’s guidance describes 8 GB as recommended to keep a device running long term, while saying that 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and projects that need high performance. Those are workload-based guideposts, not a guarantee that a particular laptop will feel fast in every situation. See Microsoft’s computer memory guidance.

As a practical buying decision, 8 GB is a lower baseline for ordinary browsing, documents, calls and media. If the price and configuration options make it feasible, 16 GB gives more room for simultaneous tasks and is the safer choice for a buyer who expects their needs to grow. More than 16 GB is worth considering when the applications you rely on are memory-intensive, such as creative tools or other high-performance workloads.

Windows 11 requires at least 4 GB of RAM, but that is a minimum system requirement, not a recommendation for a comfortable everyday purchase. Microsoft also lists a storage device of at least 64 GB for Windows 11. Neither minimum says that a device at that specification will have ample capacity or headroom for your applications and files. Check the Windows 11 system requirements if you are checking whether a computer meets the operating system’s baseline.

Match RAM to the work you do at the same time

Typical workload How to think about RAM What to check before buying
Browsing, documents, media, and occasional calls 8 GB is a practical starting point for this kind of everyday use. Consider whether you normally do these tasks one at a time or keep several open together.
Many tabs, calls, documents, and other applications open together 16 GB provides more room for multitasking than the 8 GB baseline. Count the applications you typically keep active, rather than sizing for a single light task.
Photo or video editing, or other high-performance projects Microsoft identifies 16 GB or more as a potential fit; the appropriate amount depends on the particular project and software. Check the software’s requirements and the laptop’s available memory configurations.

A browser tab, document or call does not consume a fixed amount of memory in every situation. The software, content and activity affect demand, so a table of exact RAM usage per tab would create a false sense of precision. Instead, ask what you do concurrently and whether you expect to run more demanding applications over the life of the laptop.

When to move from 8 GB to 16 GB or more

  • Choose 16 GB over 8 GB if you routinely keep several work or communication applications open while browsing.
  • Look at 16 GB or more if photo or video editing, or another high-performance project, is part of your expected workload; verify the specific software’s needs rather than treating a general guideline as a guarantee.
  • If your work is mostly one-at-a-time browsing, documents and media, 8 GB can be a reasonable lower baseline, but it leaves less room for heavier multitasking.
  • If you are unsure how your workload will develop, favor the larger memory configuration when the cost and model options suit your budget, especially if the memory cannot be upgraded later.

How to choose laptop storage

Storage is about what you intend to keep locally. Installed applications, downloads, photos, videos and work files all use capacity. A laptop’s advertised storage capacity is not the same as the space available for your files after the operating system, applications and updates occupy part of it.

There is no universal everyday storage quantity established by the official sources here. Microsoft’s 64 GB figure is the Windows 11 minimum storage-device requirement, not a general buying recommendation. Windows update space needs also vary with existing files and installed applications, so there is no stable free-space target that applies to every laptop. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements for the minimum and its Windows 11 specifications for operating-system information.

Sandisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 2000MB/s Transfer Speeds-New Model
  • NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
  • IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
  • POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.

Rather than selecting a capacity based on a supposed universal rule, estimate what will stay on the computer. Think through your current local files, the applications you need, whether you download media, and how quickly your stored material tends to grow. Then compare that estimate with the capacities actually offered on the laptop model, allowing room for the operating system, software and future files.

Build a local-storage estimate

  1. List the applications you expect to install. Include work, school, creative or specialized software, not just the programs preinstalled on the laptop. Application sizes vary, so consult the software maker’s requirements for applications that take up substantial space.
  2. Identify files you keep on the device. Include documents, downloads, photos, videos and any work or media folders you need offline. A cloud account does not automatically mean every file is stored only online; check how the services you use handle downloaded or synchronized files.
  3. Consider growth. Ask whether your photo or video collection, projects or downloads increase over time. A laptop that fits your current files exactly can become inconvenient as that library grows.
  4. Decide what belongs on the laptop. If you want your full library available without another device or an internet connection, favor a larger internal capacity. If you are comfortable keeping some files elsewhere, account for that choice and its practical limits.
  5. Compare the exact configuration. Check the model’s listed internal storage and whether the particular configuration can be expanded. Do not assume a laptop can be upgraded just because another model in the same product family can.

Choose storage around your habits

Storage habit What it means for the choice
Mostly documents and a small set of installed applications Estimate those files and applications, then leave capacity for system software, updates and additions. No single official capacity is specified for this use.
Many photos, videos, downloads or large project folders kept offline Favor more internal capacity if you want those files available on the laptop; otherwise plan deliberately for external or cloud storage.
Files stored in cloud services or on an external drive This can reduce the local library you need to keep, but check which files are downloaded, synchronized or available offline.

When an external drive is part of your plan, a portable SSD can hold a large document or media library separately from the laptop. Check that its connector works with the laptop and that it is compatible with the operating system. An external SSD adds file-storage space; it does not increase RAM, and it may not replace internal storage needed for the operating system or applications you want installed.

Check whether memory and storage can be upgraded

Do not assume that a laptop’s RAM or internal storage can be replaced or expanded later. Upgrade options differ by model and configuration; check the manufacturer’s specifications or documentation for the exact laptop before buying. If the memory is fixed at purchase, the initial RAM choice is especially important because an external drive cannot solve a memory shortage.

Apple’s current MacBook Air technical specifications provide one example of configuration variation: they list 16 GB of unified memory with options for 24 GB or 32 GB, and SSD capacities vary by model and configuration. Those figures describe the configurations listed on Apple’s specifications page; they are not a general recommendation for every laptop. Apple’s term “unified memory” also differs from the replaceable memory modules found in some PCs, so do not infer upgradeability from a capacity listing. Check the exact model and configuration on the MacBook Air technical specifications page.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Treating minimum requirements as a target. Windows 11’s 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage minimums indicate the operating system’s baseline requirements, not how much headroom an everyday laptop should have.
  • Choosing RAM based on one task. A laptop may handle a document or a video call on its own yet feel constrained when several applications are active together. Size for your simultaneous workload.
  • Assuming more storage fixes multitasking. Files fit in storage; active applications use RAM. Select each component for its own job.
  • Assuming cloud files take no local space. Synchronization and offline availability depend on the service and its settings. Check which files are stored on the laptop.
  • Assuming advertised capacity is all free. The operating system, installed applications and updates use storage, leaving less capacity for personal files.
  • Relying on future upgrades without checking. Confirm upgradeability for the exact configuration before treating it as a way to save money on the initial purchase.

A practical checklist before you buy

  1. Write down the applications and tasks you use together, including browser tabs, calls and documents.
  2. Use 8 GB as the practical lower baseline for ordinary use; consider 16 GB for heavier multitasking and 16 GB or more for demanding creative or high-performance work.
  3. List the applications and personal files you want available locally, then account for expected growth and offline use.
  4. Compare the actual RAM and SSD configurations offered for the specific laptop, not just the product-family name.
  5. Verify whether the exact model allows a memory or storage upgrade before relying on that option.
  6. If you plan to keep some files externally, confirm the drive connection and operating-system compatibility, and remember that external storage does not replace RAM.
