For Google’s Gemini Intelligence features, 12GB or more of RAM is the clearest published threshold for a Snapdragon phone—but RAM alone is not enough. Google also requires a qualified system-on-chip (SoC), advanced on-device AI capability, current media-processing hardware, software performance, and device-specific support. There is no official universal storage minimum for built-in Android AI. Storage needs depend on the operating system, apps, photos, videos, and whether you install models yourself.
If you plan to run a local large language model rather than use ordinary built-in features, memory requirements rise: Qualcomm’s AI Hub guidance specifies at least 12GB for 3B-plus models and at least 16GB for 7B-plus or 4,096-token-context models in supported deployment scenarios.
The short answer: 12GB RAM for premium built-in AI, more for local models
| Use case | Published memory guidance | Storage guidance | What else matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Gemini Intelligence on a supported phone | 12GB or more RAM | No universal AI-specific capacity stated | Qualified SoC, advanced on-device AI, current media processing, software benchmarks, device, country and language support |
| Built-in Gemini Nano features through Android AICore | Depends on the exact device and feature | AICore manages model delivery and updates; no consumer minimum published | Compatible hardware, Android support and feature availability |
| Manually deployed 3B-plus local LLM | 12GB or more in Qualcomm’s tutorial; context length may need adjustment | Enough free space for the model and normal phone use | Supported Snapdragon/Hexagon target, software and deployment tools |
| Manually deployed 7B-plus or 4,096-context model | 16GB or more in Qualcomm’s tutorial | Model files and runtime space consume user storage | Supported target device, Android 15 or newer or Windows 11, and compatible Qualcomm tooling |
These figures describe particular Google and Qualcomm requirements. They are not a guarantee that every Snapdragon phone with the same RAM will support every AI feature, nor are they a universal storage specification.

Why Snapdragon model name and RAM do not tell the whole story
“Snapdragon” covers many generations and product tiers. Two phones can both use a Snapdragon chip while differing in neural-processing hardware, graphics performance, thermal limits, camera pipeline, Android version and manufacturer software. AI eligibility is therefore assessed at the exact-device level.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Google’s Gemini Intelligence criteria combine several checks:
- Memory: at least 12GB of RAM.
- Qualified SoC: the processor must be on Google’s supported list or meet its qualification requirements.
- Advanced on-device AI processing: the phone needs hardware capable of running the supported models and operations efficiently.
- Current media processing: camera, audio and other media features may require a newer processing pipeline.
- Software performance: Google refers to operating-system, security and quality-in-field performance criteria, not just a component specification.
- Availability rules: features can vary by phone, country and language.
Consequently, 12GB is best used as a buying filter: eliminate phones below that level if Gemini Intelligence is your priority, then verify the exact model’s supported feature list. Do not treat it as an automatic pass.
How much RAM does Gemini need on a Snapdragon phone?
Gemini Intelligence: the 12GB threshold
Google’s current consumer guidance lists Gemini Intelligence as available on devices with 12GB or more of RAM, together with the other hardware and software qualifications above. This is the strongest published number for a mainstream, built-in AI experience on an Android phone.

The requirement is not saying that Gemini consumes 12GB by itself. RAM is shared by Android, the interface, foreground apps, background services and AI workloads. A phone advertised with 12GB may have less immediately available to an AI task after the operating system and other apps are running. Memory management, thermal behavior and the model selected by the software also affect the result.
Phones with 8GB or less
An 8GB phone may still offer useful AI features. Cloud-based assistants, server-side image generation, transcription or summarization can work with less local memory because the intensive computation happens remotely. Some manufacturers may also provide smaller on-device models or optimized features. However, the published Gemini Intelligence threshold is 12GB-plus, so an 8GB Snapdragon phone should not be presented as meeting that requirement.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Phones with 16GB or more
Sixteen gigabytes gives more headroom for multitasking and is the threshold Qualcomm cites for certain 7B-plus or 4,096-context local-model deployments. It still does not guarantee support: the exact Snapdragon platform, Android release, model format, context settings, thermals and application all matter.
How much storage do built-in AI features need?
No universal internal-storage minimum is established for phone AI by the official materials covered here. Android’s AICore system service handles Gemini Nano model distribution and updates on supported devices. This means an app developer does not necessarily package a large model inside the app or ask the user to manage model downloads manually.

System components, model data, caches and updates occupy space somewhere on the phone, but Google’s documentation does not publish one fixed number that applies to every manufacturer, model or feature. The reserved footprint can change with the Android release, device configuration, language packs and model version.
RAM versus storage
| Component | What it does | AI implication |
|---|---|---|
| RAM | Working memory used while Android and apps run | Determines how comfortably a model and other tasks can run at the same time |
| Internal storage | Long-term space for Android, apps, photos, video and files | Holds software and any locally installed model files; no universal AI minimum is published |
| AI accelerator and SoC | Performs neural-network, graphics and general compute operations | Can determine whether a feature is supported and how quickly or efficiently it runs |
Do not convert a RAM requirement into a storage claim. A statement such as “AI needs 12GB” refers to memory in a particular eligibility or deployment context, not 12GB of permanent disk space.

- Android and the manufacturer’s system partition.
- Apps, offline maps, downloaded music and games.
- Photos and especially high-resolution or HDR video.
- Messaging attachments and automatic backups kept locally.
- Optional model files if you intend to install local AI software yourself.
- Free space needed for system updates and temporary files.
A larger storage tier is useful for a heavy media library or several manually installed models, but the sources do not justify calling any particular 128GB, 256GB or 512GB capacity an AI requirement. Check the phone maker’s specification and the application’s own model-size information before buying.
What changes when you run a local LLM yourself?
Built-in features and a manually installed local large language model are different workloads. A local LLM keeps inference on the phone, so the device must hold model data, allocate working memory for the model and its context, and execute the workload on supported hardware.
Qualcomm’s published deployment guidance
Qualcomm AI Hub’s on-device deployment tutorial gives these scoped requirements:
- 3B-plus models: 12GB of memory or more; the usable context length may need to be reduced or adjusted.
- 7B-plus models or 4,096-token context: 16GB of memory or more. Qualcomm states, “16GB memory or more for 7B+ or 4096 context length models.”
These are developer deployment figures for supported targets, not a promise that any consumer Snapdragon phone can run those models. The tutorial also identifies a compatible Hexagon architecture, Android 15 or newer or Windows 11, and Qualcomm SDK and tooling requirements. A phone can meet the RAM number and still fail because its accelerator, drivers, operating system or model format is unsupported.
Why model size and context length matter
Parameter count is only one part of the memory calculation. Quantization can reduce the model’s footprint, while longer context increases the working memory needed for prompts and conversation history. Runtime buffers, tokenizer data and the application itself consume additional memory. This is why Qualcomm presents separate guidance for 3B-plus and 7B-plus or 4,096-context scenarios rather than one number for every local model.

On-device, cloud and hybrid AI have different hardware needs
On-device AI processes data on the phone. It can reduce latency, continue working without a network connection and keep prompts or media on the device, but it is constrained by local RAM, storage, thermals and the phone’s AI hardware.
Cloud AI sends some or all processing to remote servers. It can support larger models than a phone could run locally, but it depends on connectivity and the service’s account, privacy and usage rules. A phone with modest RAM may still use a powerful cloud assistant.
Many features are hybrid. A camera app might perform detection or enhancement locally, upload an image for generative editing, then download the result. Before judging hardware, identify where the particular feature runs. Qualcomm describes the local-versus-cloud distinction, but an individual app decides whether its workload is local, remote or mixed.
A practical buying checklist for a Snapdragon AI phone
- Define the feature. Decide whether you need Gemini Intelligence, a camera or voice feature, an AI writing tool, or a manually installed local LLM. “AI” is not one workload.
- Set the RAM floor. For Gemini Intelligence, start at 12GB or more. For the Qualcomm local-model scenarios, consider 12GB for 3B-plus and 16GB for 7B-plus or 4,096-context models.
- Verify the exact Snapdragon platform. Check the phone model, not only the Snapdragon family name. Look for confirmation of the required on-device AI capability and supported model.
- Check software support. Confirm Android version, security requirements, manufacturer update policy and the application’s supported release.
- Check region and language. Google says Gemini Intelligence availability varies by device, country and language.
- Plan storage for your habits. Reserve capacity for media, apps, updates and any model files you will deliberately download. Do not use the 12GB RAM figure as a storage target.
- Read the app’s deployment notes. For local LLMs, confirm model quantization, context limit, accelerator support and required SDKs before assuming the phone will run it.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating 12GB as a universal Android AI rule
Correction: 12GB is Google’s published Gemini Intelligence threshold with additional eligibility conditions. Other features may have different requirements or run primarily in the cloud.
Mistake: assuming every Snapdragon phone is equivalent
Correction: verify the exact SoC, phone model, software build and regional feature availability. Snapdragon branding alone does not establish support.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.
Mistake: claiming that AI always needs a fixed amount of storage
Correction: no universal consumer storage number is published here. AICore manages Gemini Nano distribution and updates on supported Android devices, while user-installed models have their own files and runtime needs.
Mistake: confusing a developer tutorial with a consumer guarantee
Correction: Qualcomm’s 12GB and 16GB local-LLM figures apply to specified model sizes and deployment conditions. They are not a blanket promise for every phone or application.
Mistake: ignoring context length
Correction: a larger context can materially increase memory demand. If a 3B-plus model does not fit comfortably, reducing context length may be necessary, as Qualcomm notes.

For most shoppers, the defensible answer is simple: buy at least 12GB of RAM if Gemini Intelligence is important, then validate the exact Snapdragon phone’s qualification. Choose storage for your personal media and app load, adding headroom if you plan to install models; there is no honest one-size-fits-all “AI storage” figure.
