There is no defensible single “typical” wall-power number for an unspecified AlphaServer 2100. The clearest published figure is a maximum 600 W of DC output per power supply for the large-pedestal system; two supplies may be installed for redundancy or current sharing. That rating describes what a supply can deliver, not what the complete server normally draws from an AC outlet.

To find your machine’s actual consumption, measure its AC input at the wall with a suitably rated plug-in power meter. Take a settled-idle reading, repeat it during a named workload, and use the meter’s accumulated kWh over a stated interval when you need energy usage. If the server has two power cords, include both inputs.

What the published AlphaServer 2100 figures mean

The 1994 Digital Technical Journal system-specifications table lists the large-pedestal AlphaServer 2100 with 600 W maximum DC power output per supply. It allows two supplies, operating either redundantly or in current-shared mode. The number is a supply-capacity limit on the low-voltage DC side. It is not a measurement of AC power entering the computer and should not be reported as the server’s normal or peak wall draw.

An AC meter measures electricity taken from the receptacle. Between that input and the DC rails are conversion losses and the server’s power-supply controls, so the two quantities are not interchangeable. A system can also draw less than the supply’s rated output when its processors, memory, disks and expansion cards are lightly loaded.

Why one “typical wattage” would be misleading

AlphaServer 2100 systems were sold in different physical forms and with different options. Processor-module count, memory population, internal drives, expansion cards and attached storage all affect input power. The available documentation identifies one- and two-supply arrangements but does not publish idle-versus-loaded wall readings for a defined configuration.

Operating state matters as well. A machine that has finished booting and is waiting at an idle prompt is not equivalent to one servicing disk requests, running a compiler or exercising all processors. External disk boxes, a console terminal and a monitor can add load if they share the measured circuit. Therefore, a number without the configuration, workload and measurement boundary cannot be compared reliably with another owner’s number.

Identify the exact machine before measuring

Write down the details that determine what your result represents. Use the labels on the chassis and the system documentation rather than assuming every “2100” is the same.

  • Form factor: large pedestal, small pedestal, rackmount or cabinet installation.
  • Compute configuration: installed processor modules and total memory.
  • Storage and options: internal disks, tape devices, network or other expansion cards, and any external storage.
  • Power arrangement: one supply or two; if two, note whether the installation is redundant or current-shared where that information is available.
  • Measurement boundary: server cords only, or server plus a console, monitor, disk enclosure or other equipment.

Photograph the rating labels and cable connections or transcribe them into your notes. This makes a later reading auditable and prevents a 2100A cabinet specification from being confused with a different 2100 configuration.

How to measure AC power at the wall

A plug-in AC watt meter (also called an electricity-usage monitor) is the practical external method. Select one rated for the outlet’s voltage, plug type and the expected current. The meter should display instantaneous watts and, if you need energy totals, accumulate kilowatt-hours.

  1. Prepare the installation. Shut down cleanly if you need to rearrange cords. Confirm that the receptacle is properly grounded and that the meter’s rating covers the load. Do not remove the earth connection.
  2. Connect the meter. For a one-supply server, plug the meter into the grounded receptacle and the server’s AC cord into the meter. For two supplies, either use equipment specifically rated to measure both inputs together or place a meter on each cord and add the readings. Never overload a meter or improvised adapter.
  3. Define what is included. Disconnect or separately identify monitors, terminals, external disk shelves and other devices if you want a server-only figure. If they remain connected, record them as part of the measurement boundary.
  4. Capture settled idle. Power up normally and wait until startup activity has finished. Record the watts after the reading has stabilized, along with the settling time and operating state. A brief boot peak is not an idle value.
  5. Run a named workload. Repeat the reading while the server performs a clearly described task, such as a particular application, batch job or storage test. Record duration and any attached equipment. Do not label an undefined activity “full load.”
  6. Measure energy over time when needed. Note the meter’s kWh counter at the beginning and end of a stated interval. The difference is the energy consumed during that interval. Keep the workload and operating schedule with the result.
  7. Document the conditions. Record date, line voltage if the meter reports it, ambient conditions when relevant, meter make and model, and the complete hardware configuration.

Handling two power supplies

The owner documentation allows one or two supplies. Two cords do not automatically mean twice the consumption: in redundant operation, one supply may carry most of the load while the other remains available; in current-shared operation, both can contribute. The only dependable way to know the input is to measure every cord or use a properly rated instrument that measures the combined circuit.

If you measure each cord separately, take readings under the same machine state and add the watt values. Also record whether the server can continue running with one cord removed; do not unplug a cord from a live redundant system merely as an experiment unless your maintenance procedure explicitly permits it.

Watts, kilowatt-hours and cost are different results

Watts (W) describe instantaneous power at the moment of the reading. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) describe energy accumulated over time. A settled 900 W reading, for example, is not automatically a 21.6 kWh daily result unless the machine actually stayed at 900 W for all 24 hours. Real workloads, idle periods and shutdowns change the total.

Use the meter’s counter rather than multiplying a short peak by a day. Subtract the starting counter value from the ending value and state the interval, such as “2.4 kWh over 12 hours while serving the overnight batch.” To estimate electricity cost, multiply that measured kWh by the applicable tariff; include the tariff period and region because rates vary.

How to report a result so another owner can interpret it

A useful report keeps the number attached to its conditions. This template can be copied into a maintenance log:

Configuration: [model/form, CPUs, memory, drives, cards, supplies].
Meter: [make/model and rating].
Measurement point: [server cords only / server plus listed equipment].
Idle: [W] after [settling time].
Workload: [description], [W] for [duration].
Energy: [kWh] over [duration].
Line voltage: [meter reading if available].
Date and ambient conditions: [details].

When comparing two readings, align the comparison axes: same form and installed options, same supply arrangement, the same settled-idle or named workload state, the same equipment included at the wall, and the same metric and time interval. If any axis differs, describe the difference instead of presenting the values as a direct efficiency comparison.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Calling 600 W “what the server uses”

Correct the wording to “600 W maximum DC output per supply.” It is a capacity rating from the system table, not an observed AC input. Replace it with a meter reading that identifies the machine and operating state.

Using the related 400 W figure for every 2100

The 400 W maximum combined-output statement appears in the AlphaServer 2000 family owner guide and has a different document and configuration context. Keep it as related-family information; do not use it as a measured or typical 2100 consumption value.

Converting heat dissipation into watts at the outlet

Catalog heat figures help with room cooling and cabinet planning, but the cited 2100A entries do not establish a general wall draw for all AlphaServer 2100 systems. Measure electrical input directly.

Measuring only one cord on a two-supply server

A single-cord reading omits the other input and can be especially misleading in redundant mode. Measure both inputs and state how they were combined.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving peripherals out of the notes

A console, monitor or external disk enclosure can remain powered while the server is being measured. Either remove those loads from the circuit or list them explicitly in the measurement boundary.

Probing mains wiring with a handheld meter

A multimeter placed in series with live mains is not a safe substitute for a plug-in power meter. Use external, enclosed equipment rated for the outlet and load; never open a power supply or defeat grounding to obtain a reading.

Electrical safety requirements

The official owner guide states: Plug this equipment into a properly grounded power receptacle. Follow that instruction while measuring. Keep the chassis and receptacle grounded, use intact cords and correctly rated meters, and avoid exposed conductors. Do not open the server’s power-supply enclosure, insert probes into mains wiring or make changes to a live supply arrangement. If the installation needs a new circuit, unusual connector or cabinet work, have a qualified electrician or service professional handle it.

What you can conclude from a measurement

A properly documented wall reading answers the practical question for your specific AlphaServer 2100: how much power that configured machine draws in a stated state and how much energy it consumes over a stated period. It does not turn the 600 W-per-supply specification into a universal typical value, and it should not be generalized to a different pedestal, rack or 2100A configuration without repeating the measurement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 600 W specification mean an AlphaServer 2100 always draws 600 W?

No. It is the maximum DC output capacity listed for each supply in the large-pedestal system specification. Actual AC input depends on the installed hardware, supply arrangement and workload, and must be measured at the wall.

How do I measure a two-supply AlphaServer 2100?

Measure both AC cords with a suitably rated instrument, either together with equipment designed for that purpose or separately and add the simultaneous readings. Record whether the system is redundant or current-shared.

Should I use watts or kWh in an energy report?

Use watts for an instantaneous idle or workload reading. Use the meter’s kWh difference across a stated interval for energy consumption, and include the interval and workload.

Can catalog heat dissipation be used as the server’s electrical consumption?

No. Heat-dissipation figures are thermal-design information for specified configurations, not a universal measured wall draw. Measure AC input directly.
