Plan on roughly 600 MB per hour for CD-quality lossless audio and up to about 2.4 GB per hour for 24-bit/192 kHz hi-res lossless when using TIDAL’s published ceilings. Those figures come from 10 MB per minute for High quality and 40 MB per minute for Max quality, converted to 60-minute totals using decimal units.
Your actual total can differ. ALAC and FLAC compress each recording differently, apps may buffer ahead, and the selected sample rate and bit depth change the bitrate. Downloads also require substantially more storage than compressed versions, but there is no universal megabytes-per-song number.
Lossless streaming data use at a glance
TIDAL Support, on a page updated January 9, 2026, gives the clearest published planning figures: High quality uses up to 10 MB per minute, while Max quality uses up to 40 MB per minute, with the exact amount varying by sample rate. Multiplying by 60 minutes produces the hourly estimates below.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Listening quality | Published ceiling | 30 minutes | 1 hour | 2 hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High, typically 16-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC | 10 MB per minute | About 300 MB | About 600 MB | About 1.2 GB |
| Max, up to 24-bit/192 kHz HiRes FLAC | 40 MB per minute | About 1.2 GB | About 2.4 GB | About 4.8 GB |
These are planning calculations from TIDAL’s stated ceilings, not a promise that every album or session will hit those rates. The gigabyte figures use decimal units: 1 GB equals 1,000 MB.

Why resolution changes the amount of data
Sample rate
Sample rate is the number of audio samples captured each second. A 44.1 kHz recording contains 44,100 samples per second per channel; 192 kHz contains far more. Increasing the sample rate therefore creates more source data for a lossless codec to preserve.
Bit depth
Bit depth describes the number of bits available for each sample. A 24-bit file carries more information per sample than a 16-bit file. A 24-bit/192 kHz stream can consequently require several times the data of 16-bit/44.1 kHz, although the final rate still depends on the recording and the service’s encoding.
Lossless compression is variable
ALAC and FLAC reduce file size without discarding audio information, but they do not produce a fixed compression ratio. Dense, complex music, quiet passages, silence, and different channel layouts can all compress differently. Two songs with the same resolution and length can therefore consume different amounts of network data or disk space.

The service’s maximum is not necessarily the quality selected for every track. A player may offer separate controls for cellular streaming, Wi‑Fi streaming, and downloads, and an album can contain files at different source resolutions.
Estimating cellular-plan use
Use this formula when a service provides a per-minute estimate:
Minutes listened × MB per minute ÷ 1,000 = decimal GB used.

The monthly rows assume 30 days of uninterrupted listening at the stated ceiling. They exclude other phone traffic and may understate network totals when the app buffers in advance or performs additional account, artwork, and catalog requests.
Wi‑Fi versus cellular
Streaming over Wi‑Fi does not draw from your mobile carrier’s allowance, although it still counts toward a home broadband data cap if your provider has one. For a limited cellular plan, set the app’s cellular quality lower than its Wi‑Fi or download quality, or restrict lossless streaming to Wi‑Fi. Download albums while connected to Wi‑Fi when you know you will listen away from home.
Buffering and background traffic
A player can fetch audio ahead of the position you are hearing. If you skip frequently, replay sections, change quality, or lose and regain a connection, the network total may not equal the audio duration multiplied by a bitrate. No universal buffering overhead is published, so treat the hourly numbers as a baseline rather than a billing guarantee.

How much storage downloaded lossless music needs
Offline storage is governed by the same variables as streaming, plus the amount of material you keep on the device. Apple explicitly says that downloading lossless audio uses significantly more space and that higher resolutions use more space. Spotify gives the same warning for higher-quality downloads.

Why a fixed song-size rule fails
- Track duration: a 10-minute concert movement contains roughly twice the audio time of a five-minute song.
- Codec compression: ALAC and FLAC are lossless but achieve different file sizes on different recordings.
- Sample rate and bit depth: 24-bit/192 kHz files generally contain more data than 16-bit/44.1 kHz files.
- Channel layout: stereo and multichannel versions can have different sizes.
- Artwork and metadata: cover images, lyrics, and catalog information add overhead beyond the audio frames.
- Application cache: services may retain temporary files while preparing or updating downloads.
Because these factors vary, there is no defensible universal “lossless song equals X MB” figure. The most accurate number is the download estimate shown by your service for the specific album, playlist, or quality setting.
A practical storage-planning method
- Choose the exact download quality and resolution you intend to keep offline.
- Use the app’s displayed estimate for a representative album or playlist. Select examples with different durations if your library includes both short tracks and long recordings.
- Calculate an average megabytes-per-track figure from those estimates.
- Multiply that average by the number of tracks you plan to store.
- Leave headroom for artwork, metadata, cache files, operating-system updates, and new additions rather than filling the drive to its nominal capacity.
- Recheck the estimate after changing from standard lossless to a higher-resolution tier; the previous average no longer applies.
A portable SSD can provide additional room for a large offline library, but external storage is not required for ordinary streaming. Keep downloaded files in the service’s supported location and follow its offline-playback rules; moving protected files manually may make them unavailable to the app.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keeping the playback chain genuinely lossless
Network delivery and the final connection to your headphones or speakers are separate stages. Apple states that Bluetooth connections are not lossless, so a Bluetooth link can re-compress audio even when the app receives a lossless file. The stream may still consume the full lossless network allowance while the audible signal reaching the headphones is lossy.
Spotify recommends Wi‑Fi and wired headphones or speakers on a non-Bluetooth connection, such as Spotify Connect, for the smoothest lossless experience. A wired USB, analog, or supported network connection avoids the Bluetooth compression step; the exact capabilities depend on the phone, computer, receiver, and headphones.

Controls that prevent unpleasant data surprises
- Separate cellular and Wi‑Fi quality: keep the highest resolution for Wi‑Fi if your phone plan is limited.
- Download deliberately: start offline downloads on Wi‑Fi and confirm that the app reports them as complete before leaving coverage.
- Check the selected resolution: a service may default to a lower tier, while a recent app update or a new device can change quality preferences.
- Watch your carrier meter: compare the phone’s per-app cellular total with your listening schedule; allow for buffering and non-audio traffic.
- Protect free space: review offline albums periodically and remove versions at resolutions you no longer need.
- Match the listening chain: use wired or non-Bluetooth playback when preserving end-to-end lossless delivery matters.
Choosing a sensible quality for your situation
Small cellular allowance
Use lossless only on Wi‑Fi or download it in advance. At TIDAL’s High ceiling, one hour can consume about 600 MB; at Max, the same hour can consume about 2.4 GB before buffering.
Generous mobile data but limited phone storage
Stream when online and avoid keeping a large offline cache. Streaming shifts the burden to network data, while downloads permanently occupy local space until removed.
Frequent travel or unreliable coverage
Download selected albums over Wi‑Fi, verify completion, and keep free storage headroom. Choose a resolution that fits the device space you can realistically reserve.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Critical listening with compatible equipment
Select the highest resolution your service, subscription tier, device, and headphones or speakers support, then use a wired or non-Bluetooth connection. If any component cannot handle that format, a lower lossless tier may provide the same end-to-end result with less data and storage.
The key planning distinction is simple: CD-quality lossless is commonly measured in hundreds of megabytes per hour, while hi-res lossless can reach multiple gigabytes per hour. Check the service’s own quality and download estimates for your catalog, keep cellular and Wi‑Fi settings separate, and reserve storage based on actual album estimates rather than a fixed song-size rule.
