For most mainstream video editing and Blender projects, 8 GB of GPU memory is a sensible starting point. Adobe currently recommends 8 GB for Premiere editing in HD, 4K and higher resolutions, and Blender lists 8 GB as its recommended GPU memory. Those figures are application recommendations, not a universal ceiling. Complex effects, stereoscopic VR, dense 3D scenes, large textures, AI model size, numerical precision, training mode and batch size can all push the requirement higher.
The right capacity is set by your most demanding real workload. A 7-billion-parameter AI model, for example, is estimated by NVIDIA to need about 14 GB just for FP16 weights; that number does not include all memory needed while the model runs. Apple silicon also changes the comparison because its applications use unified system memory rather than a separate pool of discrete VRAM.
The short answer by workload
| Workload | Published memory reference | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Premiere 26.x on Windows with a discrete NVIDIA, Intel or AMD GPU | 4 GB minimum; 8 GB recommended | Adobe says the minimum specifications are for editing HD video. The recommendation covers HD, 4K and higher-resolution editing. |
| Adobe Premiere 26.x on Apple silicon | 8 GB unified memory minimum; 16 GB recommended | These are total unified-memory figures for the Apple silicon platform, not directly interchangeable with discrete-GPU VRAM. |
| Blender GPU configurations | 2 GB VRAM minimum; 8 GB recommended | Blender’s general requirements page gives these values, while Cycles GPU rendering has additional requirements that depend on the render setup. |
| AI inference or training | Approximately 14 GB for the weights of a 7-billion-parameter model at FP16 | NVIDIA’s example is a model-weight estimate only. Runtime memory also depends on model size, training versus inference, batch size and precision. |

Why one VRAM number cannot cover every project
GPU memory stores the data a graphics workload needs close to the processor: frames, textures, geometry, effects and model data. Capacity determines whether that working set fits. It does not, by itself, determine how quickly the GPU processes the data. GPU architecture, compute resources, drivers, supported APIs, the CPU, system RAM, storage and the media pipeline also affect the result.

A project can exceed a comfortable capacity even when its nominal resolution looks modest. A 4K timeline with several GPU-accelerated effects may use more memory than a simple 6K clip with little processing. In 3D, texture resolution, scene geometry, modifiers, lighting and render features matter more than the viewport label alone. In AI, the model’s parameter count and precision are only the start; training generally creates a larger working set than a single inference pass, and larger batches consume more memory.
Video editing: sizing a Premiere system
Adobe’s current baseline
For Premiere 26.x, Adobe lists 4 GB of discrete GPU memory as the minimum for Windows systems using NVIDIA, Intel or AMD graphics. Adobe recommends 8 GB for HD, 4K and higher-resolution editing. Adobe explicitly describes the minimum specification as suitable for editing HD video, so a system that merely meets 4 GB should not be treated as a comfortable target for demanding work.
On Apple silicon, Adobe lists 8 GB of unified memory as the minimum and 16 GB as the recommendation. Unified memory is shared by the CPU, GPU and applications; it is not a detachable VRAM pool. Comparing “16 GB unified” directly with “16 GB VRAM” can therefore give a misleading impression of available headroom, because the operating system and other applications also use the unified pool.

Premiere’s Mercury Playback Engine uses the GPU for particular accelerated effects and image-processing operations. A timeline with more of those operations can require more memory than one using mostly CPU processing. Adobe also notes that high-resolution stereoscopic VR may need additional memory. Resolution is therefore an important input, but it is not a complete sizing rule.

Before buying a GPU, identify the resolution you actually deliver, the number of simultaneous streams, the effects that must remain GPU-accelerated, and whether you work with stereoscopic VR. Check the requirements for the exact Premiere version and operating system rather than relying on an older forum recommendation.
Practical Premiere choices
- Basic HD editing: 4 GB meets Adobe’s Windows minimum, but 8 GB aligns with Adobe’s recommendation and leaves more room for effects.
- Regular 4K or higher-resolution editing: Use 8 GB as the documented starting point, then move higher if your effects, multicamera timelines or VR work routinely exhaust it.
- Apple silicon: Treat 16 GB of unified memory as Adobe’s recommended platform configuration. Remember that this memory is shared across the whole system.
For details on which operations are accelerated and why a timeline can need additional memory, see Adobe’s Mercury Playback Engine (GPU Accelerated) guidance, last updated March 5, 2026.
3D work and Blender
Blender’s published numbers
Blender’s official requirements list 2 GB of VRAM as a minimum and 8 GB as recommended for the GPU configurations shown. The 8 GB value is a useful baseline for general Blender use, not a guarantee that every Cycles scene or viewport will fit.
Why a scene can need more
Every object, mesh, texture, simulation and render feature contributes to the scene’s working set. High-resolution textures can consume substantial memory before rendering begins. Multiple texture maps, subdivision, particles, volumetric effects and complex lighting can increase the peak requirement. A scene may display acceptably in the viewport and still fail during a final render when additional render data is allocated.

Cycles GPU rendering has specific additional requirements. Confirm the GPU type, operating system, driver and supported compute API for the Blender version you intend to use. Blender’s general 8 GB recommendation should be read alongside those Cycles-specific conditions, not as a promise that all Cycles projects fit in 8 GB.
Blender capacity decisions
- Learning, modeling and moderate scenes: 8 GB follows Blender’s recommendation and is a reasonable target.
- Large environments or heavy texture work: More than 8 GB can prevent memory limits from forcing texture reductions, scene simplification or a CPU render fallback.
- Cycles production rendering: Size for the largest scene you render, then verify Cycles’ additional requirements for your exact platform and version.
AI workloads: why model weights are only the first calculation
The 7-billion-parameter example
NVIDIA’s GPU guidance gives the shorthand estimate “7B params ~ 14GB for fp16.” In other words, the FP16 weights of a 7-billion-parameter model are estimated at approximately 14 GB. That is not a complete runtime requirement and should not be presented as “AI needs 14 GB.” It describes one model size at one precision.
Memory factors that change the requirement
- Model size: More parameters generally mean more weight memory.
- Precision: FP16, lower-precision formats and other representations use different amounts of memory.
- Training versus inference: Training requires a different and typically larger working set than running a trained model for inference.
- Batch size: Processing more examples at once increases memory demand.
Leave room beyond the weights estimate for the rest of the runtime. A card whose capacity is only slightly above the model-weight figure may still fail when the framework allocates other data. Conversely, a smaller model or lower-precision inference workload may fit in less memory. Measure the largest model, precision, mode and batch size you will actually use instead of applying 8 GB as an AI rule.
Using an 8 GB GPU for AI
An 8 GB card can be appropriate for smaller models and constrained inference configurations, but the documented 14 GB FP16 weight estimate for a 7B model shows why capacity requirements can rise quickly. If your target model’s weights approach or exceed the card’s capacity, reducing batch size or precision may help only when the software supports that configuration; it does not turn an 8 GB card into a 14 GB or larger device.

Discrete VRAM versus Apple unified memory
Discrete graphics cards include dedicated VRAM physically attached to the GPU. Apple silicon uses unified memory shared by the processor and graphics hardware. Adobe’s 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommendation for Apple silicon are therefore platform-specific system-memory figures. They should not be mixed into a table of discrete-VRAM requirements as though the two architectures exposed memory in the same way.
When comparing platforms, check the complete application requirement, the operating-system version, driver support and the amount of memory available after the operating system and other applications are running. A nominal capacity number without that platform context is incomplete.
A repeatable way to choose capacity
- List your real workloads. Write down the heaviest Premiere timeline, Blender scene and AI model you expect to use during the card’s service life.
- Record the operating environment. Note Windows or macOS, discrete GPU or Apple silicon, application versions, drivers and any required compute or graphics API.
- Find the published baseline. Use Adobe’s current Premiere table, Blender’s requirements page and the relevant model documentation. Treat minimum and recommended values differently.
- Describe the peak case. Include timeline resolution, accelerated effects and VR; scene textures and render features; or AI model size, precision, training or inference mode and batch size.
- Add headroom. Choose capacity above the documented baseline when your peak case is close to the limit. Headroom is especially important when the AI weights estimate nearly fills the card.
- Check the rest of the system. Confirm CPU capability, system RAM, storage throughput, power, cooling, physical clearance and software support. This evidence does not establish a universal threshold for any of those components, so do not let VRAM capacity be your only purchasing criterion.
- Validate with a representative project. Open your largest timeline or scene and run the actual AI configuration. Watch for out-of-memory errors, render failures, texture eviction or forced quality reductions before committing to a production workflow.
What to do when memory is insufficient
Video editing symptoms
Out-of-memory messages, failed renders or effects that stop using GPU acceleration indicate that the current project may exceed available graphics memory. Reduce the number of simultaneous GPU-heavy effects, lower preview quality, simplify stereoscopic VR processing or divide the timeline into smaller sections. These are workflow workarounds, not substitutes for a card with enough capacity for the final deliverable.
3D symptoms
If a Blender scene cannot render on the GPU, reduce texture dimensions, simplify geometry or disable memory-heavy render features for a test. Check Cycles’ platform and API requirements as well. A scene that fits after aggressive simplification may still require more VRAM for the intended production settings.

AI symptoms
Use a smaller model, a supported lower-precision format or a smaller batch size when your software permits it. Distinguish a model-loading failure from a runtime failure: loading may fit the weights while inference or training exceeds the remaining memory. If the complete configuration still does not fit, a higher-capacity GPU or a different execution strategy is required.
Buying guidance: capacity is a filter, not a complete specification
A graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM is a legitimate starting category for mainstream Premiere and Blender work because both vendors publish 8 GB recommendations. Do not choose a card by memory capacity alone. Verify the GPU’s compute performance, supported APIs, driver availability, power and cooling requirements, physical fit and compatibility with your operating system and applications.
For AI, compare the card’s capacity with the full model configuration rather than the parameter count alone. NVIDIA’s approximately 14 GB FP16 weight estimate for a 7B model suggests that a card with more than 8 GB may be necessary for that specific class of model, but the estimate still leaves runtime overhead to account for. Confirm the model’s precision, training or inference mode and batch-size requirements before purchase.
Prices, availability and product specifications change. Recheck the manufacturer’s current specification and the application’s current requirements at the time you buy. NVIDIA’s Studio GPU selection guide can be used as an additional workflow-planning reference, but it does not replace checking the exact software version and project demands.
