Keep about 10 GB free on the storage volume you actively use as a practical minimum. If you regularly download large games, updates, or DLC, aim for 20 GB or more. These are useful operating buffers, not Nintendo rules: Nintendo says storage requirements vary by game and directs buyers to the eShop listing or physical packaging for each title’s requirement.

The right amount depends on whether you install mostly digital games, use cartridges, capture video, and have a microSD card. Keeping some headroom avoids having to delete software when an update arrives and leaves room for temporary installation files. It does not replace checking the size of the particular game you want to install.

There is no official Nintendo minimum

Nintendo documents how to check and manage storage, but it does not publish a universal minimum number of free gigabytes or a required percentage. The company’s guidance is game-specific: storage requirements vary by game. The size shown on an eShop listing, or on a physical game package, is therefore the authoritative requirement for that purchase.

That distinction matters. A 10 GB buffer is a practical rule of thumb for day-to-day use, not a guarantee that every future game or update will fit. If the next title you want needs more space than you have left, its listed requirement becomes your immediate limit.

Choose your free-space target

Use the following bands as planning guidance. They are editorial recommendations inferred from Nintendo’s game-by-game requirements, not Nintendo thresholds.

How you use the Switch Suggested free space Why
Mostly cartridges and small indie downloads At least 10 GB Cartridges reduce full-game downloads, while the buffer covers patches, smaller installs, and ordinary housekeeping. Keep more if you record a lot of video.
Mixed physical and digital library 15–20 GB This gives room for occasional large downloads, updates, and DLC without immediately archiving another game.
Mostly digital or frequent new releases 20 GB or more Digital libraries consume storage fastest, and large updates can arrive before you have finished older games.
A specific eShop listing is larger than your remaining space At least that listing’s stated requirement The individual game requirement overrides a general buffer rule. Archive software or expand storage before buying.

Think of these figures as the point at which you should act, not as a promise that the console will fail below them. A Switch can continue operating with less free space, but running close to full leaves little flexibility for an update or capture.

Understand the two storage locations

The Switch uses its internal System Memory and, when installed, a microSD card. Knowing what each one can hold prevents a common mistake: buying a large card and assuming saved progress will move to it.

Data Where it can be stored Important limitation
Game save data System Memory Nintendo says saves cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card.
Downloaded games System Memory or microSD With a card inserted, downloadable software normally uses the card as the default location.
Game updates and downloadable content System Memory or microSD Available space on the active storage volume determines whether the download can complete.
Screenshots and captured video System Memory or microSD Frequent video capture can consume a buffer faster than game saves do.
Cartridge-based game data Cartridge plus any required download Some physical releases still require additional storage; check the package.

Because save data remains in System Memory, leave room there even if most games are installed on a microSD card. A card can relieve pressure from downloadable software and captures, but it cannot serve as a replacement for internal space used by saves.

How much microSD capacity do you need?

Nintendo supports three card families: microSD cards up to 2 GB, microSDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB, and microSDXC cards from 64 GB to 2 TB. For current game libraries, microSDXC is the practical expansion category. Nintendo recommends UHS-I cards with transfer speeds of 60–95 MB/s for a better gameplay experience.

Card specification Nintendo-supported range Best use
microSD Up to 2 GB Legacy or very small storage needs; limited for modern game downloads.
microSDHC 4–32 GB Small libraries or a temporary capacity increase.
microSDXC 64 GB–2 TB Digital libraries, updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured video.

When shopping, look for a Nintendo Switch-compatible microSDXC card and a UHS-I rating. Nintendo’s recommended 60–95 MB/s transfer range is more useful than choosing solely by a card’s maximum number on the package. A SanDisk Nintendo-licensed 64 GB card documented in a 2023 datasheet lists transfer rates up to 100 MB/s; the console’s recommendation remains the relevant compatibility guidance, and advertised maximums are not a promise of the speed in every Switch operation.

Check the actual free space before you decide

Use the console’s own figures rather than estimating from the card’s label.

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Read the available space shown for System Memory and, if installed, the microSD card.

Check both numbers. If a game is installed on the card, card space is the immediate constraint; if the console is saving data or operating without a card, System Memory is the constraint. Recheck after deleting or archiving software because the displayed totals update as space is reclaimed.

Free space safely

Archive games you are not playing

Archiving removes downloaded software to free space while keeping its icon on the HOME Menu. Nintendo says archiving does not affect save data, and the software can be downloaded again from the account that owns it. This is the least disruptive way to make room when you expect to return to a game later.

Open System Settings → Data Management, choose the software-management option, select a title, and choose Archive Software. The exact confirmation wording can vary slightly by system version, but the archive action is distinct from deleting save data.

Move software and captures to a compatible card

A compatible microSD card can hold downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured video. In System Settings → Data Management, use the available move or manage-data controls to place supported content on the card. Do not expect this operation to move game saves: those remain in System Memory.

Delete captures you no longer need

Long video clips can use more space than screenshots. Review the Album and remove exported or duplicated clips before deleting games. If captures are important, copy them elsewhere first; freeing capture space can restore your buffer without touching installed software.

Expand before the console is full

If you repeatedly archive the same titles to install new releases, install a larger microSDXC card instead of treating a nearly full card as normal. Choose the card capacity for the library you intend to keep, while still preserving the 10–20 GB operating buffer on the storage volume in active use.

Cartridges do not always eliminate storage requirements

A physical game may still need a download for part of the game, an update, or additional content. The cartridge does not guarantee that the entire experience fits without free space. Check the physical package for its storage statement before purchase, just as you would check the eShop listing for a digital copy.

Updates and DLC can also grow after launch. If you keep a cartridge library but download expansions or patches, plan closer to the mixed-use 15–20 GB target than to the 10 GB floor.

Practical planning examples

Cartridge-focused player

Suppose you play most games from cartridges, download a few small independent titles, and rarely capture video. Keeping 10 GB free on the active storage volume is a sensible floor. Before buying a cartridge, still check whether that release lists an additional download.

Mixed physical and digital player

If half your library is downloaded and you routinely install patches or DLC, target 15–20 GB. When free space falls below that range, archive a finished game before starting a large download rather than waiting for the installation to stop.

Digital-first player

For a library downloaded almost entirely from the eShop, 20 GB or more is the comfortable target. A larger microSDXC card is usually more practical than repeatedly removing and redownloading games, provided System Memory still has room for saves.

Capture-heavy player

If you record frequent video, count captures as part of your storage plan. Keep the game-install buffer and a separate margin for clips; otherwise a capture session can consume the space you expected to use for an update.

Common mistakes and their fixes

  • Treating 10 GB as an official rule: It is a practical floor, not a Nintendo requirement. Use the individual game listing when it calls for more.
  • Leaving System Memory nearly full because a card is installed: Saves remain in System Memory. Archive or remove other internal content so saves and system operations have room.
  • Buying a card by capacity alone: Confirm that it is microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC supported by Switch, and prefer UHS-I performance in Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/s recommended range.
  • Assuming archiving deletes progress: Nintendo says archiving removes downloaded software while preserving save data and the HOME Menu icon.
  • Assuming a cartridge needs no download: Some physical releases require additional storage. Read the package before purchase.
  • Using the card’s advertised maximum speed as a guarantee: A manufacturer’s peak figure is a specification under stated conditions, not a promise that every console transfer reaches that rate.

A simple maintenance routine

  1. Check System Settings → Data Management at the start of each month or before a major purchase.
  2. Compare both System Memory and microSD figures with the 10 GB minimum or your higher personal target.
  3. Archive completed games before free space becomes critically low.
  4. Remove backed-up screenshots and videos.
  5. Check the eShop listing or physical packaging for the next game’s required space.
  6. If you repeatedly fall below your target, upgrade to a larger compatible microSDXC card rather than cycling through the same deletions.

What to do when an installation will not fit

First, identify which volume is short by returning to System Settings → Data Management. If the requirement exceeds available microSD space, archive an unused download or remove captures from the card. If System Memory is short, clear eligible internal downloads while remembering that save data cannot be moved to the card. For a physical game, verify whether its package specifies an additional download and make room for that amount.

After freeing space, retry the download. If the game still will not fit, the durable fix is a larger supported microSDXC card; a bigger card does not remove the need to retain internal System Memory for saves.

Bottom line for most players

Use 10 GB free as the practical minimum and 20 GB or more if your library is mostly digital, you install frequent updates, or you capture a lot of video. Keep System Memory available for saves, put downloadable content and captures on a supported UHS-I microSD card when appropriate, and check each game’s stated requirement before purchase. Those habits matter more than any universal percentage because Nintendo does not define one.
