Plan to have about 20–30% more free space than the game’s current listed storage requirement. That is a practical planning cushion, not an official Steam, Microsoft, or industry standard. Start with the exact requirement shown by the store or launcher for your edition, then allow extra room for updates, optional content, saved data and the launcher’s own installation allocation. If the game is going on your Windows drive, reserve additional capacity for Windows updates rather than counting every remaining gigabyte as game space.
Why there is no single “safe” number
PC games do not share a universal installation size or a universal free-space rule. The number on a store page is tied to a particular title, edition and platform, and it can change as developers add patches or downloadable content. A publisher may also state a different requirement for an SSD and an HDD, or support only an SSD.
The 20–30% cushion is therefore an editorial rule of thumb for planning, not a threshold guaranteed by a launcher. Use the current install prompt as the final authority. If it asks for more space than your estimate, follow the prompt and make room before starting.
What the storage figure on a store page tells you
It is title- and edition-specific
Check the listing for the exact game edition you intend to install. Standard, deluxe and bundled editions can include different optional files. Requirements can also differ between a PC version and another platform, so a figure copied from a console listing is not a reliable substitute.

It is not a forecast of future use
Steam identifies patches and updates, local saved games and multiplayer custom content as possible sources of additional disk use. A game that fits comfortably on its release-day requirement can need more room later. Frequent large updates or extensive optional content justify a larger cushion than the basic 20–30% estimate.
It may not equal the launcher’s allocation
The store value and the amount shown when you begin installation are related but not always identical. A launcher can report a larger allocation for the installation or update operation. Treat that live figure as the requirement you must satisfy at that moment.
Real examples: how the rule changes with game size
Current Steam support listings illustrate the range rather than an industry average. The figures below were listed for individual games and accessed in 2026. The “planned free space” column applies the 20–30% planning cushion; it is not an official requirement from the game makers.

| Game | Listed storage | 20% extra | 30% extra | Practical target before installation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sifu | 22 GB | 26.4 GB | 28.6 GB | About 27–29 GB free |
| Star Wars Outlaws | 65 GB | 78 GB | 84.5 GB | About 78–85 GB free |
| Hogwarts Legacy | 85 GB | 102 GB | 110.5 GB | About 102–111 GB free |
These examples show why a fixed rule such as “always keep 100 GB free” is misleading: it is excessive for a 22 GB title but may be barely adequate for an 85 GB one with active updates. They also do not establish an average size for PC games.
How to calculate your own target
- Copy the current listed requirement. Record the number in gigabytes for the exact edition and launcher you will use.
- Multiply by 1.20 and 1.30. Those two results form a planning range. For example, a 65 GB listing produces 78–84.5 GB.
- Increase the high end for update-heavy games. Use more headroom when the title receives frequent large patches, has optional high-resolution packs or offers substantial user-created content.
- Compare the range with the destination drive’s free space. If the launcher’s installation screen requests more, use its figure instead of the estimate.
Round up rather than down when your drive is close to the boundary. A displayed value such as 84.5 GB is easier to manage as 85 GB or more, because the operating system and the launcher may report capacity with different rounding.
Keep Windows’ own space separate
If the game is installed on the drive containing Windows, not all displayed free space is available for a game. Microsoft says a typical feature update may need 6–11 GB or more, while a typical quality update may need 2–3 GB or more. The actual amount depends on the update path and the content already installed on the device. These are Windows-update figures, not game-installation requirements.

Windows can need temporary room to download, install optional update content and retain rollback files. Leaving only the game’s calculated cushion can cause an update to compete with the installation for the same capacity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck what is consuming the drive
- In File Explorer, open This PC and read the free-space value for the destination drive.
- For a breakdown, open Settings → System → Storage. Windows separates categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system and reserved storage.
- Reserved storage is used for temporary files and caches and can be used by processes such as Windows Update when space is low. Do not plan to reclaim it as if it were an unused game partition.
When the game and Windows share a drive, set your target using the game calculation and keep a separate allowance for Windows’ variable update needs.
SSD or HDD: follow the game’s current specification
Capacity and drive type are separate decisions. A game can fit numerically on a hard disk yet still require or recommend an SSD for that title’s supported experience.

| Example listing | Storage-device statement | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Star Wars Outlaws | SSD required | Install it on an SSD that meets the capacity target. |
| Hogwarts Legacy | SSD preferred; HDD supported | An HDD is supported, but the listing’s preference is an SSD. |
These are title-specific examples, not a blanket rule for every PC game. Read the storage-device line in the current listing before choosing the destination drive.
A step-by-step check before you click Install
- Open the game’s current store or launcher page. Confirm the edition, operating system and listed storage requirement.
- Check the live installation dialog. Note whether it reports an allocation larger than the store figure and whether it lists optional components you can omit.
- Choose the destination drive. Make sure it is the required type (SSD or HDD) and has at least the calculated range available.
- Inspect Windows storage. Use Settings → System → Storage to identify large apps, temporary files and reserved space before deleting anything.
- Account for near-term updates. If a major game patch or a Windows update is pending, increase your margin or install after freeing space.
- Start the installation only after the check passes. If the launcher rejects the destination, accept its requested amount rather than retrying with the original store number.
What to do when the drive is too full
Remove safe, identifiable files first
Storage settings can identify installed apps and temporary files. Uninstall games or applications you no longer use, and review temporary-file categories before deleting them. Keep personal files backed up and do not remove system files merely because they appear large.
Recommended Free Tools
Use another internal drive
Steam supports library folders on multiple drives. In the Steam desktop client, open Steam → Settings → Storage, add or select another drive, and create a library folder there. This adds capacity without changing the game’s published requirement.
Best Value
- Boot up faster. Load files quicker. Improve overall system responsiveness
- 300% faster than a typical hard drive
- Improves battery life because it’s 45x more energy efficient than a typical hard drive
- Micron 3D NAND – advancing the world's memory and storage technology for 40 years
- Crucial 3-year limited warranty
Move an installed game
Steam also supports moving installed games between library drives. In the Storage view, select the game, choose the move option, and select the destination library. Moving a less-used title can free the space needed for a new installation without downloading that older game again.
Do not confuse capacity with performance
An additional drive solves a capacity problem only when it has enough usable space and meets the title’s device requirement. The cited specifications do not establish a universal performance improvement, a particular capacity, a price or a best drive model.
If you have 140 GB free but cannot install a 90 GB game
That situation can be legitimate even though 140 GB exceeds the store’s 90 GB figure. Work through these checks in order:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that the 90 GB number belongs to the same edition, platform and launcher.
- Read the launcher’s current allocation or update prompt; it may request more than the store listing.
- Check whether optional content is selected and whether the destination is the drive named in the prompt.
- Look at Windows’ available space again in This PC and Settings → System → Storage; a drive can lose capacity to temporary or reserved storage between checks.
- If the prompt still exceeds the available amount, free more space or move another Steam game to a second library drive.
The store listing remains useful for planning, but the installation dialog reflects the operation you are actually starting.
A compact planning checklist
- Exact game edition and current launcher requirement checked.
- At least 20–30% above that number available on the destination drive.
- Extra margin added for frequent patches, optional files or custom content.
- Windows update space considered separately on the system drive: typically 6–11 GB or more for a feature update and 2–3 GB or more for a quality update, with actual needs varying.
- SSD or HDD requirement followed for this specific title.
- Launcher’s live allocation accepted as the final authority.
Bottom line
There is no universal free-space quota for a new PC game. Use the current title-specific listing, plan for roughly 20–30% extra, and add more when updates or optional content make future use uncertain. On a Windows system drive, protect separate room for Windows’ own updates. If the drive cannot maintain that margin, clean up storage or move games to another Steam library drive.
