There is no official percentage or fixed number that every console owner should keep free for a large game. Use the current storage requirement shown for the specific title and platform, compare it with the free capacity on the drive or card that will receive the installation, and leave additional working room if you plan to install updates or downloadable content without deleting something first.
That extra room is practical planning, not a Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft requirement. Game listings, installation methods, patches and add-on packages differ, so a rule such as “keep 20% free” or “reserve twice the download size” is not supported by the official guidance covered here.
Why one universal free-space number does not work
A “large game” can mean different things on different consoles. The number shown in a store may describe a download, while the installed data can be organized differently after decompression. A later patch, language pack, texture pack or expansion can require more capacity. Some installation workflows also need temporary working room, but console makers do not publish one formula that converts a listed download size into a universal reserve.
For that reason, treat the title’s current requirement as the minimum planning figure for that installation, not a lifetime guarantee for every update. Recheck the listing when you install or update, especially for a game that receives frequent patches or has substantial downloadable content.

A practical way to check space before installing
1. Read the current requirement for the exact title
Open the game’s current store page for your console and note the required storage before starting the download. Nintendo’s eShop displays the requirement before purchase. Nintendo also warns on packaging when a physical Switch release needs additional storage; some cards contain only part of a game and require a download for the rest.
On other platforms, use the current listing shown by the console store or the publisher. Do not rely on an old screenshot, a launch-era article or a figure copied from a different edition. Deluxe editions, language options and bundled add-ons can change what is installed.
2. Check free capacity on the destination device
Check the specific internal drive, expansion drive or memory card that will receive the data. Having space somewhere else does not help if the console is set to install to a full device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On PS5, Sony shows available capacity at Settings > Storage. If more than one supported storage device is connected, confirm which location is selected for the installation. The free-space figure is the relevant comparison, not the drive’s advertised total capacity.
3. Decide whether you need working room
If the free figure is only slightly above the listing, installation may succeed but leave no practical room for the next patch or an add-on. Leaving a modest cushion is sensible when you want to keep several games installed or avoid an emergency deletion. There is no official percentage to apply, so size that cushion around your own update habits, library and willingness to move or archive games.

4. Make space before the download fails
When the comparison shows too little capacity, choose one of these actions before starting:
- Delete a game or application you can redownload later.
- Move compatible data to supported expansion storage.
- Archive downloaded Switch software instead of deleting its HOME Menu icon.
- Remove optional content that the game no longer needs, where the platform provides that control.
- Install the title on a different supported destination.
What the size on a store page does—and does not—tell you
Four different quantities are often confused:
- Listed download requirement: the figure shown by the current store or publisher listing.
- Installed footprint: the space occupied after the console finishes unpacking and organizing the files.
- Temporary installation room: working capacity the platform may use while processing data. Official sources here do not establish a common multiplier for it.
- Future content: updates, season files, language packs, patches and downloadable expansions that may be installed later.
Because these quantities are not interchangeable, do not promise that a game will always need exactly its download size, or that every console needs twice that amount. Use the current requirement as your starting comparison and make a personal allowance for the way you use the system.

PS5 game and saved data can be managed from the console’s storage settings. Sony supports deleting data or moving it between the internal storage, USB extended storage and a compatible M.2 SSD.
USB extended storage
PS5 game data can be stored on USB extended storage, but a PS5 game must be moved back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before you can play it. This makes USB useful for keeping a library, not for launching PS5 games directly from that device.
Compatible M.2 SSD
A compatible M.2 SSD can hold PS5 games in a location from which they can be played. Compatibility matters; choose a drive that meets Sony’s current PS5 requirements rather than assuming any M.2 device will work.

Freeing space without losing the purchase
Deleted games and applications remain available for redownload from your game library. That does not mean every saved-data workflow is automatically preserved by every deletion action, so review the saved-data controls before removing anything important.

Some games expose a Customize option. It can let you remove unused add-ons or content you have already completed instead of deleting the entire game.
PlayStation 4: use its own expansion rules
Sony’s PS4 space-management guidance is separate from PS5’s. To make room, you can delete applications, install a new game to USB extended storage or upgrade the console’s internal hard disk drive. Do not apply PS5’s M.2 or “move back to play” rules to a PS4 purchase; check the PS4-specific instructions and the game’s current requirement.
Nintendo Switch: microSD stores software, not save data
Nintendo Switch microSD cards can store downloaded software, updates, downloadable content and screenshots. The right capacity depends on how many games you keep installed and how much additional content you download, rather than on a universal reserve percentage.
Before buying or downloading
The eShop shows the required storage before purchase. For physical releases, read the package for an additional-storage warning. A game card can still require a microSD download for the full game or later content.

What happens to saves
Switch game save data is stored in System Memory, not on the microSD card. Moving or replacing a card therefore does not move the saves with the software. Nintendo says save data is unaffected when you archive or delete downloaded software, but keep your normal save-management and backup practices in mind.
Archive instead of deleting the icon
Archiving removes downloaded software to free space while retaining its icon on the HOME Menu. Selecting the icon lets you redownload the software later, provided you have a connection and enough capacity.
Nintendo Switch 2: 256 GB is total capacity, not a free-space target
Nintendo’s current Switch 2 Data Management FAQ, accessed in 2026, lists 256 GB of internal storage and notes that part of it is reserved for system use. That figure describes the console’s capacity; it is not a recommendation for how much to leave unused.
Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for software data, updates, downloadable content and captures. External USB hard drives are not supported for this purpose. Nintendo’s current FAQ says that, at the time of that guidance, no individual games required additional storage, so a card is an optional capacity expansion rather than a mandatory purchase for every owner.

Xbox: use the current console readout and title listing
For Xbox, check the game’s current store listing and the console’s own storage screen before installing. The available official material used for this guide does not provide a readable, current basis for a universal free-space percentage, an installation multiplier, a precise menu path or a general expansion-device compatibility claim. Avoid treating an Xbox number copied from a launch article as a platform rule; use the figures displayed by your console and the current edition of the game.

Choosing expansion storage by console generation
Expansion is useful only when it matches both the console and the way you want to play. Compare compatibility, what data the device can hold and whether games can run directly from it.
| Platform | Supported expansion described by the platform guidance | Play behavior or content detail |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | USB extended storage or a compatible M.2 SSD | PS5 games may be stored on USB extended storage but must be moved to console or M.2 storage to play; M.2 storage can hold playable PS5 games |
| PS4 | USB extended storage or an internal HDD upgrade | Use the PS4-specific installation and storage instructions |
| Nintendo Switch | microSD card | Stores downloaded software, updates, downloadable content and screenshots; save data remains in System Memory |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | microSD Express card | Stores software data, updates, downloadable content and captures; external USB hard drives are not supported |
Identify the exact console model before purchasing a card or drive. A storage device that fits one generation’s requirements may not meet another generation’s specification, and a device that stores games may not support playing them directly.
Fixing “not enough space” without unnecessary deletions
On PS5
- Open Settings > Storage and identify which device is full.
- Check whether the installation is targeted at console storage, USB extended storage or the M.2 SSD.
- Use the game and application controls to delete an unneeded title, move data or use Customize where available.
- If you delete the game, find it later in your library for redownload; review saved-data controls separately before removing saves.
On PS4
- Check the PS4 storage-management screen and the title’s current requirement.
- Delete an application you can reinstall, install the new game to USB extended storage or consider an HDD upgrade.
- Keep the PS4 instructions separate from PS5’s M.2 and game-play behavior.
On Nintendo Switch
- Read the eShop requirement or the physical package warning for the exact game.
- Archive downloaded software you are not currently playing to reclaim its space while keeping its HOME Menu icon.
- Use a compatible microSD card for software, updates, downloadable content and screenshots.
- Do not expect a microSD move to relocate save data; Switch saves remain in System Memory.
On Nintendo Switch 2
- Check the available internal capacity, remembering that part of the 256 GB total is reserved for system use.
- Use microSD Express for additional software data, updates, downloadable content and captures.
- Do not plan on an external USB hard drive for this expansion role.
Two simple planning examples
When the listing is larger than the free figure
If a store page lists a game at 120 GB and the selected destination reports 95 GB free, the installation does not fit that destination. The remedy is to free space, change the destination or add supported expansion; there is no benefit in starting the download and hoping the console will compress the requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the listing barely fits
If the listing is 100 GB and the destination reports 110 GB free, the basic comparison is favorable, but only 10 GB remains for later patches or add-ons. Keeping the game may be reasonable if you regularly manage storage; otherwise, move or archive another title first. The 10 GB is a planning example, not an official reserve threshold.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- Use the current requirement for the exact game, edition and platform.
- Compare that requirement with free capacity on the actual installation destination.
- Do not turn practical breathing room into a claimed 20%, 25% or 30% platform rule.
- Plan separately for updates, downloadable content and temporary installation work.
- Match expansion storage to the console generation and verify whether games can be played directly from it.
- Archive or delete selectively, and handle save data according to the platform’s controls.
