Keep roughly 10–15% of your PS5’s active storage free as a practical working buffer. This is an editorial rule of thumb, not a percentage Sony requires. You do not need to keep a fixed 100 GB available on every console, but a drive that is nearly full leaves less room for game patches, captures, downloads and system operations.

Sony’s documented requirement of approximately 1.1–1.2 GB of free space applies to a specific system-software reinstallation process. It is a recovery floor, not a comfortable everyday reserve.

What Sony officially requires—and what it does not

Sony does not publish an everyday free-space percentage for PS5 consoles. Its storage guidance tells you to monitor the available space and remove or move content when storage becomes low. On the console, the check is at Settings > Storage. Sony’s wording and menu path are documented in its PS5 storage-management guide.

The only small free-space figure Sony publishes in the supplied support material is tied to reinstalling the system software. Localized versions of the PS5 system-software guide call for approximately 1.1 GB or 1.2 GB of free space. That amount is enough for the stated recovery operation under Sony’s instructions; it is not a sensible target for normal gaming.

WD_BLACK 2TB SN850P NVMe M.2 SSD Officially Licensed Storage Expansion for PS5 Consoles, up to 7,300MB/s, with heatsink - WDBBYV0020BNC-WRSN
  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

A nearly full drive creates practical friction even when the console still starts. Large game updates may need temporary working room, a new installation needs space for its files, and captures or downloads can fail when there is nowhere to write them. The exact amount required varies by game, update and operation, so no universal “last safe gigabyte” exists.

How to apply the 10–15% buffer

Use the capacity that is actually available to games and applications as your reference, rather than treating the printed capacity of a drive as usable space. Multiply that figure by 0.10 and 0.15 to create a lower and upper buffer.

Active storage capacity 10% buffer 15% buffer Interpretation
1 TB 100 GB 150 GB A practical target range for a 1 TB pool of active storage
2 TB 200 GB 300 GB More headroom for a larger game library and frequent updates
4 TB 400 GB 600 GB A large reserve; keep the percentage, not a fixed number, in mind

These are arithmetic examples, not Sony-prescribed limits. A console used for a few small games may operate comfortably below the range for a while, whereas a system that regularly downloads large releases, records video or shares storage with several users benefits from the higher end. If free space repeatedly falls below your chosen buffer, treat that as a maintenance signal rather than waiting for an installation error.

Check your current free space before deleting anything

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Storage to see the space used by games and apps, media, saved data and other categories.
  3. Open each category to identify the largest items and content you can recreate or move.
  4. Compare the displayed free space with the buffer you set from the table above.

Do not assume that deleting a small capture will solve an installation problem if games and applications consume nearly all of the drive. Start with the category that offers the largest recoverable amount, and check free space again after each batch of changes.

Ways to recover space without losing your library

Delete games or applications you can redownload

Games purchased digitally remain associated with your account, so deleting an installed copy is an option when you need room and have a reliable connection for a later download. Disc-based games can also be reinstalled from the disc, although updates may still need to download. Remove games you no longer play before removing personal saves or captures.

Move games to compatible expansion storage

An M.2 SSD installed in the console can hold PS5 and PS4 games and run them directly. USB extended storage is useful for keeping PS5 games without occupying the internal drive, but those PS5 games must be copied back before they can be played. The distinction matters if you are choosing storage for an active library rather than an archive.

Review captures and other media

Video clips and screenshots can accumulate unnoticed. Export important captures to another device or cloud service before deleting them. Sony also documents separate handling for saved data and captures, so do not treat a media cleanup as a substitute for a save-data backup.

M.2 SSD versus USB extended storage

The right expansion depends on whether you want to launch PS5 games from the added device or simply keep less-used games available at lower cost. Sony’s storage-solutions information and M.2 compatibility guidance list supported capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB, subject to the requirements of the specific storage type.

For an M.2 drive, Sony specifies a PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interface, capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB, supported physical dimensions, and effective heat dissipation. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster. These are compatibility checks, not a guarantee that every drive with a matching speed will fit; the connector, length, width, thickness and heatsink must all fit the PS5 expansion bay. Use Sony’s M.2 SSD installation and compatibility guide to verify the exact model before buying.

Sony states that, once installed, M.2 storage can be used to “download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps.” That makes it the seamless choice when your goal is to keep more PS5 games ready to start without a copy-back step.

How USB extended storage behaves

A compatible USB extended-storage drive is primarily an archive and overflow device for PS5 games. You can move a PS5 game there to free internal or M.2 space, but you must transfer it back before playing. Sony describes the operation this way: when you are ready to play a PS5 game on an external USB drive, transfer it to the internal SSD through the Options Menu in the Library. The official explanation is on Sony’s storage-solutions page.

PS4 games are different: compatible PS4 titles can be played directly from USB extended storage, avoiding the copy-back delay. USB therefore works well when you rotate PS5 games, keep completed titles archived, or maintain a large PS4 collection. It is less convenient when you frequently switch among many PS5 games.

Check the drive’s compatibility and capacity range before formatting it as extended storage. Formatting removes existing data, and a drive used as PS5 extended storage should not be disconnected while data is being transferred or accessed.

Saved data, captures and game files are separate decisions

Game installations, saved data and captures do not have identical storage rules. Sony lists PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 and PS4 saved data. USB drives can also hold PS4 saved data and captures under Sony’s stated conditions. Review the details in the storage-management guide before deleting anything you cannot recreate.

Deleting an installed game is not the same as deleting its save. Nevertheless, you should verify that a save is present locally or in a current backup before removing related content, especially if the game has no cloud synchronization or you share the console with another account.

Choosing the right response to low storage

You are below the buffer but still have room to play

Delete or move one or two large, inactive games, then recheck the percentage. This is the least disruptive point to act because you can choose what to remove instead of being forced to clear space during an update.

An update or installation will not start

Open Settings > Storage, remove or move enough content to create a meaningful reserve, and retry the operation. Freeing only the exact size shown for the download may not be sufficient if the update needs additional working space.

You want PS5 games ready without repeated transfers

Choose a compatible M.2 SSD with the required PCIe Gen4x4 interface, physical dimensions, read-speed recommendation and heatsink arrangement. Confirm the exact drive against Sony’s compatibility guidance before installation.

You mainly need inexpensive capacity for games you rarely play

Use USB extended storage as an archive, accepting that PS5 games must be copied back before launch. It is a better fit when transfer time is acceptable and direct play is not the priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are protecting saves or captures

Prioritize a verified backup path—PlayStation Plus cloud storage where available, or a compatible USB workflow for the data Sony permits—before deleting installations or media.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Treating 1.1–1.2 GB as the normal reserve: that figure belongs to system-software reinstallation, not daily gaming. Use a percentage buffer instead.
  • Buying an M.2 drive by capacity alone: confirm PCIe generation, NVMe format, dimensions, heatsink clearance and the 5,500 MB/s recommended sequential-read speed.
  • Expecting PS5 games to launch from USB: move the game back to internal or M.2 storage before playing.
  • Deleting saved data while cleaning installations: inspect the saved-data category and confirm a backup first.
  • Waiting until the drive is completely full: maintenance is easier when you still have enough room to download an update or move a game.

A simple maintenance routine

  1. Check Settings > Storage at the start of a large download or before a major game release.
  2. Keep your selected 10–15% buffer available on the storage pool you use for active games.
  3. Archive games you are not playing to USB, or move them to a compatible M.2 SSD if you want to launch them without transfers.
  4. Clear unwanted captures and confirm save backups separately.
  5. Recheck the free-space figure after updates, recordings or large installations.

There is no Sony-mandated percentage to memorize. The practical answer is to maintain a visible working reserve, act before storage becomes an installation error, and select M.2 or USB expansion according to whether direct PS5 launching or low-cost archiving matters more.
