There is no single wattage for a BLDC ceiling fan: power use depends on the specific model and the speed you select. To estimate energy use, multiply the fan’s watts by the hours it runs and divide by 1,000. The available official examples below are not identified as BLDC fans, so they illustrate how to do the calculation—not how much every BLDC fan uses.

How to calculate a fan’s electricity use

Wattage (W) is the rate at which a fan draws power at a particular operating condition. Energy use depends on both that power draw and how long the fan runs. The calculation is:

Energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh) = watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, a fan drawing 20 W for 5 hours uses 0.1 kWh: 20 × 5 ÷ 1,000. This is an arithmetic example, not a claim that a particular BLDC fan draws 20 W. Use the wattage for your own fan at the speed you use; a single rated or maximum value may not describe every speed.

Estimate daily and monthly use

For a daily estimate, multiply the fan’s wattage by its hours of use per day, then divide by 1,000. For a 30-day estimate, multiply the daily kWh by 30. These estimates assume the fan runs at the same stated wattage throughout its operating hours. If you change speeds, calculate each period separately and add the results.

For example, if a fan is used for 4 hours at one speed and 3 hours at another, calculate (watts at speed one × 4 + watts at speed two × 3) ÷ 1,000. The result is the day’s energy use in kWh. Multiply that figure by 30 for a 30-day estimate if the same daily pattern continues.

What official product examples show—and what they do not

ENERGY STAR product records report separate low-speed, high-speed, and standby readings for individual products. The records below are useful for illustrating how much wattage can vary across operating conditions. They do not identify these products as BLDC, and they are not a controlled comparison: the fans differ in blade span and product design.

ENERGY STAR product listing Blade span Low speed High speed Standby Record status
Visual Comfort & Co LAUNCETON 44 44 inches 1.9 W 29.8 W 0.7 W Certified 2025; motor type not identified in the cited record
Monte Carlo Jovie 58 58 inches 3.4 W 17.6 W 1.1 W Certified 2022; motor type not identified in the cited record

These figures show why it is misleading to quote one wattage as the answer for every fan or even every speed of one fan. In the LAUNCETON 44 listing, the reported high-speed draw is much greater than its low-speed draw. In the Jovie 58 listing, the high-speed reading is also greater than the low-speed reading. The two products should not be used to infer that one size, brand, or motor type is inherently more efficient: they are different products, and the records do not establish a like-for-like test.

Worked energy estimates from the listed readings

The following estimates apply the formula to the ENERGY STAR readings. They assume the listed wattage stays constant for the stated hours. These are calculations for the two named listings, not BLDC consumption benchmarks.

Listing and operating condition Assumed daily use Calculated daily energy Calculated 30-day energy
LAUNCETON 44, low at 1.9 W 8 hours running 0.0152 kWh 0.456 kWh
LAUNCETON 44, high at 29.8 W 8 hours running 0.2384 kWh 7.152 kWh
Jovie 58, low at 3.4 W 8 hours running 0.0272 kWh 0.816 kWh
Jovie 58, high at 17.6 W 8 hours running 0.1408 kWh 4.224 kWh

The assumed 8 hours is only a way to demonstrate the calculation. Replace it with your actual daily runtime and the wattage for the speed you use. If the fan runs at different speeds during the day, work out each interval separately rather than treating the whole day as if it were at high or low speed.

Account for standby separately

Standby is power drawn while the fan is idle in its standby state, not while it is running. Include it only for the time the fan is actually in that state. For instance, assuming 8 hours running and 16 hours in standby each day, the LAUNCETON 44’s listed 0.7 W standby draw would add 0.0112 kWh per day (0.7 × 16 ÷ 1,000), or 0.336 kWh over 30 days. The Jovie 58’s listed 1.1 W standby draw would add 0.0176 kWh per day, or 0.528 kWh over 30 days, under the same assumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those standby amounts should be added to the running-energy estimate only if the fan remains in standby for those hours. If it is switched off at a wall control or disconnected, do not count those hours using the product’s standby figure. The calculation also assumes the listed standby value applies to the fan’s actual configuration.

Turn energy use into an electricity-cost estimate

To estimate cost, multiply the calculated kWh by the price you pay per kWh:

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Estimated cost = energy use in kWh × your electricity price per kWh

For example, take the 7.152 kWh 30-day estimate for the LAUNCETON 44 listing at 8 hours per day on high. Multiply 7.152 by the per-kWh rate on your electricity bill. The result is an estimate in the currency used for that rate. No single bill amount applies to every reader because electricity prices and tariffs vary by location and plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a closer estimate, use the rate that applies to your household and check whether your bill has different time-of-use prices or other charges. This calculation covers the fan’s energy consumption; it does not account for unrelated charges on the electricity bill.

How to find a useful wattage for your BLDC fan

  1. Identify the exact model. Check the label on the fan, its packaging, or its product documentation. A product family name alone may not distinguish models or configurations.
  2. Confirm the motor type in the documentation. Look for an explicit statement that the particular model uses a BLDC motor. An efficiency label or a low wattage by itself does not establish motor type.
  3. Find power readings by speed. Use the documentation’s wattage for the speed you intend to operate. If only a maximum or rated wattage is given, treat it as the value the documentation specifies—not as a confirmed draw at every speed.
  4. Check the configuration. If the fan has an attached light kit or other included equipment, check whether its wattage is included in the listed fan figure. Compare like configurations; the cited product records do not establish a universal rule about light-kit inclusion.
  5. Apply your runtime and tariff. Calculate kWh for the time spent at each speed, add standby energy only where applicable, and multiply total kWh by your own electricity rate to estimate cost.

If the documentation does not give readings for individual speeds, it cannot support a precise estimate for each speed. A plug-in or other suitable power meter may help measure a compatible fan in use, but use a device and method appropriate to the fan’s installation; do not connect a permanently wired ceiling fan to equipment that is not designed for that purpose.

Compare airflow as well as watts

Wattage alone tells you how much power a fan draws, not how much air it moves. A useful efficiency comparison considers airflow alongside power. ENERGY STAR defines its ceiling-fan efficiency metric as “A weighted efficiency metric based on the ceiling fan performance at multiple speeds and in stand-by mode, expressed in cubic feet per minute per watt (CFM/W).” A higher airflow-per-watt figure indicates more airflow for each watt under the metric’s defined weighting, but it is not the same thing as a universal BLDC wattage.

ENERGY STAR’s ceiling-fan criteria set minimum thresholds that vary with fan type and size. Its residential ceiling-fan specification, Version 4.1, was finalized August 1, 2023. This makes the certification criteria useful context when comparing eligible products, but certification alone does not prove that a particular fan uses a BLDC motor. To make a meaningful comparison, check the motor type, blade span, airflow, operating-speed readings, standby draw, and equipment included in the figures.

Why there is no reliable universal BLDC wattage here

The official product examples provide model-specific measurements but do not identify either example as BLDC. They therefore cannot establish a typical BLDC wattage or a BLDC-wide range. Nor should their readings be presented as evidence that ENERGY STAR certification means a fan uses a brushless DC motor.

For your own fan, the most defensible answer comes from its exact model documentation, with motor type confirmed separately from its power readings. If those details are missing, state that the wattage or motor type is not established rather than substituting a figure from a different fan. A published figure from another model can demonstrate the calculation, but it cannot settle how much your BLDC ceiling fan uses.
