Most WooCommerce stores should budget about $25–$350 per month for hosting. WooCommerce itself costs $0 per month and takes no revenue share, but you still pay for VPS resources, payment processing, and any extensions you install. Current VPS examples run from heavily discounted introductory offers to managed plans starting around €120 per month, so the price you see at signup may differ sharply from the renewal bill.

The practical way to compare plans is to annualize the full contract, separate introductory and renewal rates, and decide how much server administration you want to handle yourself.

What a WooCommerce store actually costs

WooCommerce is free, open-source software. WooCommerce’s 2026 pricing information says there is no monthly platform fee and no percentage of your sales owed to WooCommerce. Its statement that you “choose where to invest your budget” means your recurring bill is assembled from separate services rather than one mandatory subscription.

Cost component Typical amount or treatment What changes the bill
WooCommerce software $0 per month There is no WooCommerce platform fee or revenue share.
VPS hosting WooCommerce cites roughly $25–$350 per month for most stores. CPU, RAM, storage, traffic, management, region, billing term and support level.
Extensions $29–$299 per extension per year, according to WooCommerce’s 2026 pricing page. Number of extensions, license tier and whether a subscription or membership feature is needed.
Payment processing Variable; charged by your payment provider rather than WooCommerce. Gateway, card type, country, currency, refunds and other provider rules.
Operational services Included on some managed plans, extra work on self-managed VPS. Backups, malware monitoring, firewall configuration, migration, updates and support.

Therefore, “WooCommerce hosting cost” is not a single license price. It is the sum of infrastructure, software add-ons and the people or services responsible for keeping the store online and secure.

Published VPS price benchmarks

These figures are useful reference points, not universal quotes. Providers change prices by country, currency, billing duration, promotion and resource tier. Always check the checkout page for the exact renewal rate before committing.

Offer described in the published benchmark Introductory price Renewal price Resources or inclusions
Entry KVM VPS listed by TechRadar (2026; provider name omitted here) $6.49/month on a 48-month term $19.49/month after the promotional term Entry-level virtual server; the cited listing is tied to a long commitment.
Managed WooCommerce cloud VPS, ScalaHosting (TechRadar, 2025) $14.95/month $29.95/month 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM and 50 GB SSD.
Higher ScalaHosting tier cited by TechRadar $69.95/month $165.95/month Larger managed tier; the source does not state a single universal traffic allowance.
Premium managed VPS, OppaHost (2026) Starts at €120/month Not stated WAF, backups, migration and premium email/WhatsApp support are included in the cited offer.

The $6.49 figure is an introductory rate that applies only when the 48-month commitment is selected. It is not a month-to-month price. At $6.49 for 12 months, the first-year hosting outlay would be $77.88, but the same service would cost $233.88 for a 12-month period at the stated $19.49 renewal rate after the promotional term.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the ScalaHosting entry tier, 12 months at $14.95 is $179.40, while a renewal year at $29.95 is $359.40. The higher cited tier would be $839.40 for an introductory year and $1,991.40 for a renewal year. The OppaHost starting price represents €1,440 for 12 months before any applicable taxes or additional services. Do not convert the euro figures to dollars using an assumed exchange rate; the amount you pay depends on your card issuer and billing currency.

Why introductory and renewal prices differ

Promotional VPS pricing is commonly conditional on a long initial term. A headline monthly number can therefore hide both the required prepayment and the later renewal rate. Compare offers using these three numbers:

  1. Amount charged today: multiply the promotional monthly rate by the number of months the provider requires you to prepay.
  2. Equivalent first-year cost: include any setup, migration or add-on charges and divide the committed amount over the first 12 months.
  3. Steady-state annual cost: multiply the published renewal rate by 12, then add recurring licenses and services.

Ask whether the promotional rate renews monthly, annually or for another fixed term; whether taxes are included; and whether the provider can change the resource tier at renewal. A cheap first year can become an expensive long-term arrangement if the renewal price is not part of your budget.

Managed versus self-managed WooCommerce VPS

The largest non-hardware price difference is who performs server operations. A self-managed VPS gives you root-level control and usually a lower service overhead. You are responsible for operating-system updates, web-server and database tuning, firewall rules, malware response, backup verification, restore testing and incident response. A managed VPS charges more to include some or all of that work.

Decision area Self-managed VPS Managed VPS
Administration You patch the operating system, web stack and control panel, or hire your own administrator. The host handles an agreed set of updates and routine maintenance.
Backups You select storage, schedule jobs and verify that restores work. Backups may be included; confirm retention, off-site storage and restore assistance.
Security You configure the firewall, hardening, malware scans and alerts. Some plans include a web application firewall (WAF), monitoring and remediation.
Migration You plan DNS, database, files, email and rollback. Migration assistance may be bundled, as in the cited OppaHost offer.
Support Support normally covers the virtual machine, not your application code. Higher-priced plans can include priority channels and help diagnosing infrastructure issues.
Control Root access allows custom software and unusual configurations. Managed policies may restrict changes that could compromise supportability.

Managed hosting is worth the premium when downtime, a missed security patch or a failed restore would cost more than the monthly difference, or when nobody on your team can administer Linux and a database safely. Self-managed hosting can be sensible when you already have those skills, need root access for custom services, and can maintain a tested backup and monitoring process.

How much server capacity does WooCommerce need?

There is no single “WooCommerce VPS size.” A small catalog with light traffic can use far fewer resources than a busy store with the same number of products. The workload rises with:

  • Concurrent shoppers and traffic spikes from advertising or seasonal events.
  • Large catalogs, product variations, search and filter queries.
  • Page-builder, analytics, marketing and inventory plugins.
  • Custom code, webhooks and integrations with accounting, shipping or warehouse systems.
  • Subscriptions, memberships, bookings and B2B pricing, which create more logged-in and dynamic requests.
  • Background jobs such as image processing, imports, scheduled renewals and report generation.

The cited managed benchmark of 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM and 50 GB SSD is a concrete entry configuration, not a guarantee of capacity. Treat it as a starting reference, then watch CPU saturation, memory pressure, PHP worker queues, database latency, disk space and cache hit rate. If checkout slows while CPU is idle, the bottleneck may be database queries, an extension or external API rather than a need for more cores.

Signals that it is time to scale

  • Requests queue during normal traffic even after page and object caching are configured.
  • PHP workers remain busy and shoppers see timeouts during imports or scheduled tasks.
  • Database CPU or I/O spikes coincide with cart, checkout or account activity.
  • Available storage falls below the provider’s recommended reserve because of images, logs or backups.
  • A traffic campaign repeatedly exhausts memory or triggers swap activity.

Scale vertically first when the application is healthy but consistently resource-bound. Consider multiple application servers, a separate database or a content-delivery layer only after monitoring shows that one larger VPS is no longer the right fix.

Calculating your first-year and ongoing budget

Use a simple worksheet instead of comparing headline monthly prices:

Annual total = hosting paid in the period + extension renewals + payment-provider charges + separately purchased operations

For example, three extensions at the published $29–$299 annual range represent $87–$897 per year before payment fees. Add the hosting scenario that matches your contract:

  • Long-term entry promotion: $77.88 for the first 12 months when $6.49 is charged for each of 12 months; the cited renewal equivalent is $233.88 per year.
  • Managed entry tier: $179.40 for an introductory ScalaHosting year or $359.40 at the cited renewal rate.
  • Premium managed operation: €1,440 per year at OppaHost’s €120 starting price, with no renewal figure stated in the published benchmark.

These totals still exclude transaction fees, taxes, domain registration, premium themes, email delivery, extra backup storage and development work. Keep those items in a separate line so a low VPS quote does not become a misleading estimate of the store’s total technology spend.

What to check before buying a WooCommerce VPS

  1. Read the billing term: confirm whether the advertised rate requires 12, 24, 36 or 48 months and whether the full amount is charged upfront.
  2. Record the renewal price: save a copy of the checkout terms and note the date the promotional period ends.
  3. Match resources to workload: compare dedicated or guaranteed CPU, RAM, SSD type and backup storage, not just a vCPU label.
  4. Clarify traffic policies: ask whether “unmetered” traffic has fair-use limits, connection caps or overage fees.
  5. Verify management scope: list exactly who patches the operating system, PHP, database and control panel, and what happens after a malware incident.
  6. Inspect backup terms: check frequency, retention, geographic separation, encryption and whether a restore is assisted or self-service.
  7. Check support coverage: identify support hours, emergency escalation, response targets and whether application troubleshooting is included.
  8. Review data-center geography: place the server near your principal shoppers while checking privacy, tax and data-residency obligations.
  9. Test migration and cancellation rules: confirm export access, DNS assistance, notice periods, refund windows and whether backups remain available after cancellation.
  10. Plan scaling: ask how to increase CPU, RAM or storage and whether an upgrade requires downtime or a server move.

Choosing the cheapest VPS without underbuying

“Cheapest” should mean the lowest cost that meets your reliability and labor requirements, not the smallest advertised number. Follow this sequence:

  1. Write down your current monthly visitors, peak concurrent users, catalog size, plugin list and scheduled jobs.
  2. Separate must-have services from optional ones, including WAF, managed backups, migration and premium support.
  3. Price the first year and a normal renewal year for each candidate using the same currency and tax treatment.
  4. Estimate the value of your own administration time. A $10 saving is not a saving if it requires several hours of patching, monitoring and recovery work each month.
  5. Choose a plan with measurable headroom for campaigns and seasonal peaks; upgrading under pressure is riskier than starting one tier higher.
  6. Document a restore test and a rollback plan before moving checkout traffic.

An inexpensive self-managed VPS can be appropriate for a technically capable owner with a maintenance window and independent backups. A managed plan is often the lower-risk choice for a revenue-generating store where an outage, data loss or security incident has a substantial business cost.

Bottom-line budget ranges

For planning purposes, use WooCommerce’s $25–$350 monthly hosting range as the broad budget envelope for most stores, then place your store within it based on traffic, functionality and management needs. Promotional VPS offers can fall below that range during a long commitment, while fully managed or performance-focused environments can exceed it. The decisive comparison is the renewal-adjusted annual total plus extension and payment costs, not the first number shown in an advertisement.
