There is no universal SIEM price. Your bill depends on the pricing unit (ingested data, search workload, monitored assets, or a commitment tier), the volume and sources you collect, how long data stays searchable, query activity, package features, region, discounts, and related cloud services. A defensible estimate therefore starts with measured daily and peak ingestion, an explicit retention design, and identical assumptions in every vendor quote—not a single industry-average number.
What actually determines a SIEM bill?
SIEM providers use different meters, and the labels are not interchangeable. Before comparing offers, identify the primary unit on the order form.

Ingestion is the dominant variable in many contracts, but it is not a universal predictor. A workload-priced service can cost more because analysts run expensive searches even when the raw data volume is unchanged. An asset-priced offer can look inexpensive for a small fleet while becoming less attractive as protected devices multiply.
Measure ingestion before requesting a quote
Do not estimate from the number of servers alone. Build a source inventory and observe representative traffic, including busy periods. Vendors establish volume as a billing input, but there is no single measurement method that fits every environment.

- List every candidate source. Include identity systems, endpoint agents, firewalls, cloud control planes, applications, databases, network devices, SaaS audit logs, and vulnerability tools.
- Record average and peak daily volume. Capture ordinary weekdays, weekends, patch windows, incident spikes, and onboarding bursts. A monthly average can hide a commitment overage caused by a short-lived surge.
- Mark real-time detection sources. Separate telemetry required for immediate rules from data useful only for investigation or compliance. This distinction lets you route lower-priority data to a cheaper tier or archive when the product supports it.
- Document filtering and transformation. Note fields dropped, duplicate events removed, sampling applied, and compression or normalization performed before ingestion. Ask the vendor whether billing uses bytes before or after those operations.
- Describe growth. State expected acquisitions, cloud expansion, new regions, endpoint growth, and retention changes over the contract term.
Give every bidder the same source list, average, peak, and growth assumptions. Ask for a sample bill that shows the meter used for each class of data.
Retention is a separate cost axis
“Retention” can mean several different things. Clarify how long data remains in a fast analytics tier, how long it is searchable in a lower-cost data lake, and how long an archive is kept for legal or investigative purposes. A package with 12 months included is not equivalent to one that includes 30 or 90 days and meters every additional month.
Analytics versus archive tiers
Fast tiers support interactive detections and searches but generally cost more. Lower-cost lake or archive tiers may charge separately for ingestion, processing, storage, and the data scanned when you query them. Ask whether moving data between tiers is automatic, whether rules can read archived records, and whether rehydration or retrieval creates another charge.

Compression assumptions
Microsoft’s Sentinel billing documentation describes a 6:1 compression assumption for data-lake storage. Its example treats 600 GB of raw retained data as 100 GB of compressed billable data. That is a billing example, not a guarantee that every dataset compresses at that ratio. Use the provider’s documented method and your own telemetry when modeling storage.
Included periods and overages
Microsoft describes optional retention charges after 90 days in its analytics plan. Google Security Operations advertises one year of security-telemetry retention at no additional cost on its pricing page. Elastic publishes retention rates for its serverless service. Those statements apply to the named products and tiers; they should not be generalized to another edition or region.
How major SIEM pricing models differ

Microsoft Sentinel: meters beyond basic ingestion
Microsoft’s data-lake meters separate ingestion for lake-only tables, processing, storage per GB per month after analytics retention ends, and queries charged per GB of uncompressed data scanned. Advanced data-insight compute may add another charge. The documented 6:1 storage assumption is used for billing calculations, not as a universal technical result.

Commitment tiers reserve daily capacity at a fixed fee and apply at the workspace level; they cannot be shared across workspaces or subscriptions. Azure services used alongside Sentinel—including Log Analytics, Logic Apps, Azure Machine Learning, and solutions—have their own applicable charges. Include those services in the same budget rather than treating the Sentinel line item as the complete bill.

A 50 GB commitment-tier public-preview promotion was announced October 1, 2025. Sign-up is listed through December 31, 2026, with the promotional price retained through March 31, 2027 for qualifying purchases. Pricing varies by region, and eligibility and dates should be confirmed before relying on the offer.

Google Security Operations: package scope and contract language
Google describes three packages with different rule limits, threat-intelligence capabilities, environments, and pipeline-management features. The public pricing page does not provide a universal rate card; it directs buyers to sales. Its statement that one year of telemetry retention is included should be read together with the package, geography, and data definition in the quote.
The archived January 30, 2025 terms describe a flat rate up to a purchased data cap. Excess units may be invoiced monthly in arrears at a prorated list price less the discount specified in the order form, unless the parties agree otherwise. The same archived terms describe proportional fee increases when covered personnel rise by 10% or more. Treat both provisions as contract language to verify, not as a standard price for every customer.

Under Splunk’s ingest model, the pricing unit is the data volume and user and search activity are included without an additional charge under that model. Workload pricing moves the focus to compute and storage, which can suit organizations with large volumes that are searched infrequently. Capacity is measured differently in cloud and Enterprise deployments, so a quote should identify the unit and the assumptions behind it.

Ask Splunk to model your expected search count, query complexity, dashboards, scheduled detections, and indexing volume. A data-only estimate can understate a workload-priced deployment when analysts or automated rules perform intensive searches.

Elastic publishes “as low as” per-gigabyte rates rather than a universal monthly bill. Ingestion is listed at $0.09/GB for one feature tier and $0.11/GB for another; retention is listed at $0.017/GB/month and $0.019/GB/month. Egress includes 50 GB free, then is $0.05/GB. These figures took effect November 1, 2025 and are subject to the applicable region, tier, and configuration.
For a forecast, multiply the measured billable gigabytes by the applicable ingest rate, then model retained gigabytes by month and add any egress. Label the result as an illustration, not a quote: “as low as” pricing does not establish what your account will pay.

- Overage: Determine whether excess data is billed at the commitment rate, a prorated list rate, a discounted rate in the order form, throttled, or handled by an amendment.
- Storage after the included period: Ask when analytics retention ends and whether lake or archive storage is billed per compressed or uncompressed unit.
- Query scans: Data-lake searches may be charged by the amount of uncompressed data scanned, even when storage is inexpensive.
- Processing and transformation: Lake-only ingestion, parsing, enrichment, advanced insights, and machine-learning features can have separate meters.
- Compute: Workload-priced services may charge for search capacity, notebooks, scheduled jobs, or investigative tools.
- Cloud infrastructure: Connectors, automation, serverless workflows, Log Analytics, networking, and other underlying services can appear on a separate cloud bill.
- Integrations and support: Confirm connector limits, premium integrations, implementation services, support response levels, and training.
- Geography and currency: Region-specific rates, taxes, foreign-exchange treatment, minimum terms, and discounts can materially change the invoice.
- Contract minimums: Check committed daily capacity, minimum annual spend, renewal increases, cancellation rules, and whether commitments can move between workspaces or subscriptions.
Build a comparable SIEM estimate
Use one worksheet for every vendor and keep assumptions identical.
- Ingestion profile: Enter average and peak GB per day, monthly seasonality, source-by-source volumes, and expected growth.
- Data placement: Identify which sources require real-time analytics, which can use a lake, and which belong in archive storage.
- Retention: Record searchable analytics days, lake days, archive months, and retrieval expectations.
- Search workload: Estimate analyst searches, scheduled rules, dashboards, notebooks, query scans, and compute-heavy investigations.
- Scope and features: List package, detection and SOAR capabilities, threat intelligence, environments, assets, support, and integration requirements.
- Commercial terms: Capture commitment size, overage treatment, discount, currency, region, contract term, and renewal language.
- Ancillary services: Add automation, connectors, processing, network transfer, machine learning, and cloud infrastructure.
- Bill validation: Request an itemized sample invoice showing every variable meter and ask what event would increase each line.
Then request quotes using the same worksheet. Google and Splunk direct prospects to sales; published Elastic and Microsoft rates still require your actual configuration and region to produce a relevant estimate.
Questions to put in the order form
- What exact bytes are billable, and at what stage are they measured?
- Are peak days, burst traffic, or retries counted separately?
- What retention is included in each tier, and what happens automatically afterward?
- Are archived searches charged by scanned data, compute time, or retrieval events?
- Can commitments be shared across workspaces, subscriptions, or regions?
- What discount and overage rate apply after the purchased cap?
- Which cloud services, connectors, automation runs, and support services are excluded?
- Which prices are promotional, when do they expire, and what renewal rate applies?
Bottom line: budget the whole workload, not a headline rate
A SIEM quote is comparable only when ingestion, peak behavior, retention tiers, search activity, features, support, region, and contract terms match. Measure your data first, separate fast analytics from long-term storage, expose every overage and cloud-service meter, and ask each provider for an itemized bill. Public figures—such as Microsoft’s 100 GB/day commitment starting point, Google’s one-year included retention, or Elastic’s “as low as” per-GB rates—are useful anchors, but none is a universal monthly price.
