For a U.S. electric-vehicle owner, replacing a traction battery usually means budgeting roughly $5,000 to $20,000 or more. That is an orientation range, not a quote for a particular car. The final bill depends on the vehicle’s make, model year, usable battery capacity, chemistry, replacement method, labor rates, and whether the battery warranty applies.
Manufacturers often do not publish retail replacement-battery prices. The only dependable way to find your cost is to have the vehicle diagnosed and obtain a written estimate for the exact pack and repair scope. Check warranty coverage before assuming you will pay the entire amount.
What an EV battery replacement normally costs
AAA’s consumer guidance gives these illustrative ranges, including parts and labor. They describe typical pack-size categories rather than guaranteed prices for a specific vehicle, shop, or date.

What the broad range does—and does not—tell you
The lower end of the range can describe a smaller pack or a less extensive repair, while a large, highly integrated pack can exceed $20,000. A vehicle’s advertised range is not the same thing as its battery capacity, and the usable capacity shown in specifications may differ from the pack’s total physical capacity. Give the shop the exact trim and battery option rather than relying on a generic model name.
AAA’s figures are useful for planning whether a possible repair is a major financial decision. They are not a price list, and they do not establish what a dealer or independent specialist in your area must charge. Ask for a current quote after diagnosis.
Why the same repair can have very different prices
Vehicle and battery configuration
Battery capacity is only one variable. Two vehicles with similar kilowatt-hour ratings can use different cell formats, cooling systems, enclosures, monitoring electronics and crash structures. A pack designed as a sealed, highly integrated assembly may require more labor and specialized equipment than one built from serviceable sections. Make, model year, drivetrain version and battery option therefore belong on every estimate request.

A shop may propose replacing the entire high-voltage pack, a battery module, contactors, sensors, wiring, cooling components or a battery-management component. A module-level repair can be less expensive than a complete pack, but the sources reviewed here do not establish standardized module-repair prices across vehicle makes. Ask the provider to identify exactly which components are being replaced and why.
Do not compare a module-only estimate with a complete-pack estimate as if they were equivalent. The proposed scope, testing and remaining warranty can be different. If a shop says the whole pack is required, ask what diagnostic evidence rules out a repair to a module or another component; if it proposes a module, ask how the rest of the pack was evaluated.

Labor and repair scope
Request an itemized estimate that separates the battery or modules, labor, diagnostics and any additional work. Confirm whether the quoted amount includes removal, installation, software configuration, testing, shipping, disposal or a core charge. For a fair comparison, give each provider the same diagnostic report and ask for the same repair scope.
Why published prices can be hard to find
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says manufacturers typically do not publish replacement-battery pricing and that an out-of-warranty replacement is expected to be a significant expense. This is why an online figure for a different vehicle can be misleading: the part may not be interchangeable, and the installed price depends on the provider and location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWarranty status
Many manufacturers offer EV battery warranties of eight years or 100,000 miles, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC). The actual term, mileage limit, degradation threshold, exclusions and transfer rules depend on the vehicle’s warranty. A covered repair can change an otherwise large owner-paid bill to a warranty claim, so verify coverage before authorizing work.
Ask the dealer or manufacturer to confirm the vehicle’s in-service date, current mileage and the exact failure or degradation threshold used for a claim. A warranty may require a particular diagnostic procedure or approval before a pack is removed. Keep the written response with the estimate.
Battery manufacturing cost is not your replacement invoice
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office estimated light-duty lithium-ion pack cost at $139 per usable kWh for 2023 production at a scale of at least 100,000 units annually. That is a modeled manufacturing estimate, not a retail replacement price.

A separate DOE report from January 2025 listed representative high-voltage battery manufacturing-cost estimates of $9,185 for a compact car, $9,929 for a midsize car, $11,032 for a midsize SUV and $15,368 for a pickup truck. These figures describe modeled component and manufacturing costs. They do not include every factor in an installed consumer repair invoice, so multiplying a vehicle’s capacity by $139 will not produce a reliable quote.
Recommended Free Tools
Manufacturing estimates reflect production at scale, whereas a replacement may involve a low-volume part, inventory and shipping, diagnostic time, specialized lifting and isolation procedures, software configuration, testing and a shop’s labor rate. Those categories explain why a consumer invoice should not be reverse-engineered from a per-kWh number.
Do EV batteries usually need replacement?
A potentially expensive repair does not mean battery replacement is routine. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says an EV battery pack could last the lifespan of the vehicle, while noting that many factors affect how long it lasts.
The DOE summarized a Recurrent study of about 15,000 plug-in vehicles from model years 2011–2023. Failure-related battery replacements outside recalls occurred in 1.5% of the vehicles in that study. For model years 2016–2023, the rate was well under 1%, and most replacements were covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. The study excludes recall replacements and represents its sampled vehicles; it cannot predict what will happen to an individual car.
Those percentages are useful context when budgeting: an owner should know the possible cost without assuming that a normal aging battery will inevitably require a full pack. A recall replacement is a separate category from an owner-paid failure replacement, so ask whether a vehicle concern is related to an open recall before discussing out-of-pocket work.

How to find your vehicle’s actual replacement cost
- Record the vehicle details. Write down the make, model, model year, trim, battery option, current mileage, in-service date and vehicle-identification number (VIN). These details help a dealer or qualified EV specialist identify the correct warranty and pack.
- Check for warranty coverage first. Ask the dealer or manufacturer to confirm the battery warranty’s start date, mileage limit, degradation or failure threshold, exclusions and claim procedure. Ask what diagnostic evidence is required before approval.
- Request a diagnosis, not just a battery price. Reduced range, warning messages or charging problems can result from software, temperature-management, charging equipment, sensors or other high-voltage components. A diagnosis should establish whether the pack itself has failed and whether the condition meets the warranty threshold.
- Obtain a written, itemized estimate. Require separate lines for the pack or modules, labor, diagnostic charges, programming, coolant or other associated work, taxes or fees if applicable, and the warranty for the replacement part and labor.
- Clarify the proposed repair level. Ask whether the recommendation is a complete pack, one or more modules, or another component. Have the provider explain the evidence supporting that choice and whether a replacement pack is new, remanufactured or otherwise specified.
- Compare like-for-like estimates. If you contact another qualified provider, supply the same diagnostic findings and request the same repair scope. Comparing a full-pack quote with a module-only quote can make a cheaper estimate appear equivalent when it is not.
- Confirm post-repair checks. Before approving work, ask how the vehicle will be tested after installation, how battery-management software will be configured and what documentation you will receive.
Safety: why this is not a normal DIY battery job
An EV traction battery is a high-voltage system capable of delivering dangerous energy even when the car is switched off. NHTSA advises contacting the dealer if a battery may be damaged. A consumer scan tool, generic repair kit or online procedure does not make pack removal or replacement safe.
- Do not open, puncture, lift or disconnect a damaged pack yourself.
- After a crash, flooding, fire or severe impact, keep away from exposed components and contact the manufacturer, dealer or emergency professionals for instructions.
- Use a facility with technicians trained and equipped for the vehicle’s high-voltage system.
- Ask how the shop will isolate, move and store the pack and how it handles the removed battery.
Symptoms that do—and do not—prove a failed pack
Shorter driving range alone does not establish that the entire battery needs replacement. Usable range changes with weather, speed, heating or air-conditioning use, tires, load, driving style and battery state of charge. A warning light, charging interruption or sudden power limitation also requires diagnosis because several systems can produce similar symptoms.
Ask for the measured battery condition, the diagnostic codes and the threshold used for the vehicle. If a provider recommends a replacement, request an explanation of whether the problem is cell imbalance, module failure, isolation resistance, cooling failure, contactor damage, physical damage or another condition. This documentation helps you evaluate warranty eligibility and compare estimates.
Questions to ask before authorizing the work
- Is the vehicle still within the battery warranty by both date and mileage?
- What exact diagnostic threshold or failure code supports replacement?
- Is the quote for the complete pack or selected modules and components?
- Is the replacement battery new, remanufactured or of another stated type?
- What parts and labor warranty applies after installation?
- Are programming, cooling-system service, testing, transport and disposal included?
- How long will the vehicle be unavailable, and what happens if additional damage is found after removal?
How to budget without overestimating or underestimating
Use the AAA ranges only to decide whether a potential repair is financially significant. Do not treat a battery-capacity calculation or a price seen for another model as your vehicle’s bill. Manufacturer pricing is frequently unpublished, and local labor, parts availability and the repair method can change the result.

If the vehicle is covered, your priority is documenting the in-service date, mileage and diagnostic result and following the warranty claim process. If it is outside coverage, compare the written estimates with the car’s age, condition, remaining financing and expected use. A battery quote should be evaluated as one repair decision, not as proof that every EV will eventually need the same expenditure.

Bottom line for an EV owner
Plan on a possible U.S. replacement cost in the several-thousand-dollar range, with large or flagship packs reaching well beyond $20,000. The broad estimate is useful for planning, but only a vehicle-specific diagnosis and written quote can answer what your car will cost. Check the battery warranty before paying, distinguish a complete-pack replacement from module repair, and leave high-voltage work to qualified professionals.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to replace a battery in an EV?
A broad U.S. planning range is about $5,000 to $20,000 or more. AAA’s illustrative ranges run from $4,000–$9,000 for 20–30 kWh packs to $15,000–$25,000 or more for packs above 100 kWh. Your vehicle, location, repair scope and warranty determine the actual price.
Is an EV battery replacement covered by warranty?
Many manufacturers offer battery warranties of eight years or 100,000 miles, but the exact term, mileage, degradation threshold and exclusions depend on the vehicle. Have the dealer confirm eligibility using the in-service date, mileage and required diagnostic results before approving paid work.
Do EV batteries usually need to be replaced?
No. NHTSA says a pack could last the vehicle’s lifespan. A DOE summary of a Recurrent study found failure-related replacements outside recalls in 1.5% of sampled 2011–2023 plug-in vehicles and well under 1% for model years 2016–2023. Those results are not a guarantee for an individual car.
Can a shop replace one battery module instead of the entire pack?
Sometimes a provider may propose a module, contactor, sensor, cooling component or other repair instead of a complete pack. Module-repair prices are not standardized across makes, so ask for the exact component, diagnostic evidence and warranty in writing.
Can I calculate the replacement price from dollars per kilowatt-hour?
No. DOE’s $139-per-usable-kWh figure is a modeled 2023 manufacturing estimate at large production scale, not an installed consumer price. Retail repairs can include specialized labor, diagnostics, shipping, configuration and testing.
Is replacing an EV battery a DIY job?
No. The traction battery is a high-voltage system. NHTSA advises contacting the dealer if it may be damaged; a consumer scan tool or generic repair kit does not make pack removal safe. Use a qualified facility.
The Bottom Line
Budget roughly $5,000–$20,000 or more in the U.S., then verify the exact vehicle warranty and obtain an itemized diagnosis-based quote. Battery manufacturing figures and prices for other models are not substitutes for that estimate.
