There is no reliable single annual price for maintaining a 1970s classic car. The total depends on the exact model, its condition and service history, how far it is driven, parts availability, local specialist rates, and how much suitable work the owner does. The best current broad benchmark located is a 2026 survey of UK classic-car owners: most reported spending under £2,500 a year, excluding insurance. That is a self-reported figure for classic cars generally—not a controlled maintenance estimate for 1970s cars, and not a US cost estimate.
What should you budget?
For a broad point of reference, Heritage Insurance’s 2026 survey of 841 UK classic-car owners asked about annual spending excluding insurance. The responses were distributed across five bands:
| Annual spending reported | Share of surveyed owners | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Under £500 | 26% | Self-reported annual classic-car spending, excluding insurance |
| £500–£1,000 | 36% | Self-reported annual classic-car spending, excluding insurance |
| £1,000–£2,500 | 24% | Self-reported annual classic-car spending, excluding insurance |
| £2,500–£5,000 | 10% | Self-reported annual classic-car spending, excluding insurance |
| Over £5,000 | 4% | Self-reported annual classic-car spending, excluding insurance |
These are not maintenance-only totals: the survey describes owners’ spending on classic cars, does not isolate cars from the 1970s, and reflects UK respondents rather than owners everywhere. Treat the bands as context, not as a quote or prediction for your car. In particular, a car with overdue work or a major failure can cost substantially more than a routine year.
A narrower example shows why model and task matter. Hagerty UK’s buying guide for the Triumph Stag, a model built from 1970 to 1977, gives a price of under £50 for a basic driveway service, excluding the oil change, and around £530 for a fuller service by a specialist. It also gives a typical labour rate of about £55 per hour. The two services cover different work; these guide figures are not directly equivalent, current quotes, or prices for other cars.

What counts as maintenance—and what does not?
Before estimating a yearly total, decide which costs you mean. Routine service is only one part of owning and keeping an old car roadworthy. Repairs and replacement parts may dominate a year’s bill, especially if the car has deferred work or a component fails. Other expenses should be kept visible rather than folded into a vague “maintenance” estimate.
- Routine service and consumables: oil and filter changes, lubrication, fluid changes, basic tune-ups, and scheduled checks.
- Repairs and replacement parts: corrective work, wear items, and parts needed after a fault or inspection.
- Specialist labour: work the owner cannot or should not do, charged according to the workshop and region.
- Storage: a separate ownership expense if the car is kept in paid storage.
- Fuel: a use-related cost, not a service or repair cost.
- Insurance: a separate line. The Heritage survey’s spending bands exclude it.
That separation matters when comparing figures. A low service estimate does not mean the car’s full annual ownership cost is low, and a spending survey that excludes insurance should never be presented as an all-in total.

Which factors change the bill most?
Condition and work already due
A well-maintained car with records and no known overdue jobs presents a different budget problem from one that needs baseline servicing or repairs. Before setting an annual allowance, list known work due and distinguish it from routine work expected to recur. The available survey figures do not quantify a universal premium for a neglected car, so an inspection and car-specific estimates are more useful than applying a standard percentage.

Parts supply varies substantially by marque. A commonly supported model may be easier to keep going than a less-supported one, but availability for the exact part matters: an essential component that is hard to source can hold up a repair as well as affect its price. Hagerty notes that older parts can be difficult to find and that a repair may take longer while an essential part is sourced. No general cost premium can be assigned to a particular make or part from the available figures.

Mileage and intended use
More miles generally mean more maintenance, according to Hagerty, but mileage alone cannot predict an individual bill. A UK context point comes from the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs’ 2025 National Historic Vehicle Survey: Heritage Car Insurance cites an average of 837 miles a year for a UK historic vehicle. That is an average for the survey’s historic-vehicle population, not a target or forecast for a particular 1970s car. A car used regularly, a car driven only occasionally, and a car being recommissioned after standing can have different needs.
Labour market and geography
Specialist rates vary by region and workshop. Heritage reports no authoritative published benchmark for specialist labour rates. The roughly £55-per-hour figure in Hagerty UK’s Stag guide is a model-guide example, not a national rate or a current quote that can safely be applied to another location. Ask local specialists for estimates based on the actual work and car.

Owner skills and tools
Doing appropriate tasks yourself may reduce paid labour, but it does not make parts, fluids, tools, or mistakes free. An owner who can safely perform routine service may have a different cash outlay from an owner who outsources all work, yet the evidence does not establish a universal saving. The 2019 FBHVC National Cost of Ownership Survey, as reported by Classic & Sports Car, found that 80% of surveyed enthusiasts said they changed their own oil. That historic UK result describes those respondents; it is not a current statistic for all 1970s-car owners.
How to build a realistic estimate for your car
- Identify the exact car. Record make, model, year, engine and any relevant specification. A generic “1970s classic” budget cannot account for model-specific schedules or parts supply.
- Establish its condition and history. Gather service records, note known faults and overdue work, and have the car inspected by a suitably knowledgeable person if its condition is uncertain. Separate immediate corrective work from recurring service.
- Check the correct service information. Use the owner’s manual or a service manual for the exact model. The schedule, approved fluids and procedures differ between cars; do not assume a generic interval or fluid is appropriate.
- Set an intended annual mileage. Estimate how the car will actually be used, rather than borrowing the UK historic-vehicle average as a personal forecast. More use can bring additional maintenance, while prolonged standing may also mean work is needed before regular use.
- Price planned work locally. Ask a specialist familiar with the model to separate labour, parts and consumables in an estimate. Request clarification about what each service includes; the Stag guide’s driveway and specialist-service examples cover different work.
- Make separate budget lines. Track routine service, repairs and parts, specialist labour, storage, fuel and insurance separately. This makes it clear what a quoted or reported “annual cost” includes.
- Revisit the estimate when the car changes. New faults, completed baseline repairs, a change in mileage, or difficulty sourcing a part can all alter the next year’s spending. A single past year is not a dependable forecast for every future year.
DIY or specialist: where is the sensible line?
DIY can be rewarding and may help an owner notice developing problems earlier. Hagerty’s vintage-car maintenance guidance says that doing the work yourself can save money and may reveal potential problems before they become serious. That benefit depends on doing work correctly: an inexpensive task performed incorrectly can create a larger repair or a safety issue.

Start with work that matches your knowledge, tools and the car’s service instructions. Keep records of dates, mileage, parts and fluids so the next service is based on what was actually done. For an unfamiliar procedure, the guidance recommends watching an experienced person first and following the correct manual. Beginners should not treat a valuable or special-interest car as a place to learn a risky repair without preparation.
- Use the car’s manual to confirm the procedure and correct materials.
- Do not take on safety-critical or unfamiliar work solely to avoid a labour bill.
- Ask a specialist to diagnose faults that exceed your experience or equipment.
- Record both DIY and paid work; incomplete records make future estimates less reliable.
Why there is no single dependable annual figure
The available broad benchmark is UK owner-reported spending across classic cars, not a controlled study of maintenance costs for 1970s models. The most specific price example is for one UK-market Triumph Stag service guide, not an updated quote covering the range of classic cars. Neither supplies a current US-wide estimate or a universal labour rate. That limits how confidently any one number can be generalized.
For a useful personal budget, the decisive inputs are the exact car, its condition and service history, intended annual mileage, parts availability, local labour quotes and the share of work you can competently do yourself. The owner survey can provide perspective on what some UK classic-car owners report spending; it cannot replace those car-specific inputs.
