There is no single cost to boil a kettle: it depends on the kettle’s power, how long it heats, and the electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) on your tariff. Calculate energy use as (watts ÷ 1,000) × (minutes ÷ 60), then multiply the result by your unit rate. For illustration, a 2,400 W kettle heating for five minutes uses an estimated 0.2 kWh; at the Great Britain average Direct Debit price-cap rate of 26.32p/kWh for 1 October–31 December 2026, that works out to about 5.26p.
How to calculate the cost of a kettle boil
You need three inputs: the kettle’s power rating in watts, the time it heats in minutes, and the electricity unit rate in price per kWh. The calculation estimates the energy for that use, then prices it at your tariff rate:
- Convert power to kilowatts: divide the kettle’s watt rating by 1,000.
- Convert heating time to hours: divide the number of minutes by 60.
- Calculate energy: multiply the kilowatts by the heating time in hours to get kWh.
- Calculate cost: multiply the kWh by your electricity price per kWh.
In short: Energy (kWh) = (power in watts ÷ 1,000) × (heating time in minutes ÷ 60), and cost = energy (kWh) × unit rate. This is the same calculation method set out by National Energy Action in its appliance-running-cost guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep the units consistent. A tariff shown in pence per kWh gives a result in pence; if your rate is in pounds per kWh, the result is in pounds. For example, 26.32p/kWh is £0.2632/kWh. You can calculate the cost directly in pence using 26.32, or in pounds using 0.2632, but do not mix pence and pounds in the same calculation.

Worked example using a current Great Britain rate
Take a 2,400 W kettle that heats for five minutes. Its estimated energy use is (2,400 ÷ 1,000) × (5 ÷ 60) = 0.2 kWh. Ofgem lists an average Direct Debit electricity unit rate of 26.32p/kWh for the Great Britain price-cap period from 1 October to 31 December 2026. Multiplying 0.2 by 26.32p gives 5.264p, or about 5.26p.
This is an illustration using a particular power rating, heating time and tariff rate—not a typical or guaranteed cost for every kettle or home. Your result will change if any of those inputs differ.
Find the right numbers for your calculation
Check the kettle’s power rating
Look for a wattage figure on the kettle’s rating label or in its product specifications. Use the figure for the kettle you actually use; a rating from a different model will give a different estimate. Wattage measures how quickly the appliance uses energy while operating, not the total energy for every boil.
If the label gives the rating in kilowatts rather than watts, use that figure directly for the first part of the calculation instead of dividing by 1,000 again. If you cannot find the rating, check the product specification for the exact model. A guess based on another kettle may make the estimate less useful.
Measure heating time for the amount you boil
Time how long the kettle heats for the amount of water you normally use. Start when you switch it on and stop when it switches off. The time and wattage belong together in the estimate: a high-wattage kettle running for less time cannot be compared with a lower-wattage one without accounting for both inputs.
The amount of water and its starting temperature affect how long heating takes. A calculation based on rated power multiplied by elapsed time is therefore an estimate, and actual energy use may differ. If you want a figure for your own routine, use the heating time for that routine rather than treating the worked example as a universal boil.

For a representative figure, time a normal cycle rather than relying on a generic duration. If your usual use varies—for instance, sometimes heating a small amount and sometimes filling the kettle more—record those situations separately. The result for one measured cycle describes that cycle, not every possible use of the appliance.
Use your own electricity unit rate
Find the electricity price per kWh on your bill or tariff information. Check that you are using the rate for the relevant time of use. Ofgem distinguishes single-rate tariffs from multi-rate tariffs such as Economy 7, which have different peak and off-peak unit rates. If your rate varies by time, use the rate that applies when you boil the kettle.
The 26.32p/kWh figure above is an Ofgem average Direct Debit price-cap rate for Great Britain for one defined period; it is not a worldwide rate or necessarily your personal price. Rates can vary by tariff and region, and the price-cap rate changes by period. A bill or tariff statement is a better input for a personal estimate than an undated average.
For a time-of-use tariff, the same kettle cycle can have different costs depending on when it runs, even if its estimated kWh use is unchanged. If you want to compare two tariff periods, keep the kettle wattage and heating time constant and calculate the cost once with each applicable unit rate.
What the estimate means—and what it does not
Power, energy and cost are different quantities
Watts describe power: the rate at which energy is used. Kilowatt-hours describe energy used over time. The electricity unit rate prices each kWh. That is why the calculation first converts watts and minutes into kWh, then applies the tariff price. A 2,400 W rating is not the same thing as 2,400 Wh used in every boil.
The formula assumes the kettle uses its rated power throughout the measured heating interval. It is a practical estimate, not a direct reading of electricity consumption. If you need a measured value rather than an estimate, an appropriate appliance energy monitor could measure use, but buying equipment is not necessary to do the calculation.

More water generally means more heating time
Filling the kettle with more water can increase the time it heats, which increases energy use in the formula. The precise effect depends on the water amount and starting temperature, so there is no single extra cost per cup that applies to every kettle and tariff. For a cost estimate, use the time associated with the amount you actually heat.
To answer “Does filling the kettle with more water cost more?”: it can, because more water can take longer to heat. Put the measured time for that fill amount into the formula rather than assuming that every cup or fill has a fixed price. Then use the same unit rate that applies to the boil.
Wattage alone does not tell you whether a boil is cheaper
A higher wattage means energy is used at a faster rate while the kettle operates. But total energy depends on both power and duration. A lower-wattage kettle does not automatically use less energy to heat the same amount of water; it may simply take longer. Compare the estimated or measured kWh for the same amount of water rather than choosing on wattage alone.
That distinction also explains why wattage is not a complete measure of running cost. A wattage rating tells you the rate of energy use while the kettle is on, while the duration determines how long that rate applies. To compare two models fairly, you would need comparable use—especially the same quantity of water—and the relevant tariff rate.
Estimate the cost over a day, week or month
Once you have a per-boil estimate, multiply it by the number of boils in the period you want to understand. Using the same illustrative 0.2 kWh boil and 26.32p/kWh rate, each modeled boil costs 5.264p before rounding:
| Modeled boils | Estimated energy | Estimated electricity cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0.2 kWh | 5.264p (about 5.26p) |
| 10 | 2 kWh | 52.64p |
| 30 | 6 kWh | 157.92p (about £1.58) |
These totals are arithmetic projections for repeated identical five-minute boils by the example kettle at the example rate. They are not predictions of a household’s actual bill: the water amount, heating time, tariff, and number of uses may differ. For a better estimate, calculate your own per-boil energy first and multiply that result by your actual number of boils.

When scaling up, multiply the unrounded per-boil result where possible, then round the final total for readability. If your routine includes different fill amounts or different unit rates at different times, add the separate estimates rather than treating every use as identical.
Do not add the standing charge to the cost of one more boil
An electricity bill can include a daily standing charge as well as a unit rate for each kWh used. The standing charge is a separate bill component; it is not the marginal charge for one additional kettle boil. To estimate the extra electricity cost of a boil, multiply its energy use by the applicable unit rate. Include standing charges only when considering the broader bill, not when pricing one more use of an already-connected supply.
How to use National Energy Action’s older example
National Energy Action gives a worked example of a 2,400 W kettle heating for five minutes: it uses the formula to calculate 0.2 kWh, then applies an example rate of 12p/kWh to get 2.4p. That arithmetic is useful for seeing how the method works, but the 12p/kWh figure is an example rate, not a current electricity price. Applying the same 0.2 kWh estimate to another tariff changes the answer; at the Ofgem Great Britain average Direct Debit rate for 1 October–31 December 2026, the corresponding calculation is about 5.26p.
Common calculation mistakes to avoid
- Using watts as though they were kWh: convert watts to kilowatts and account for the heating time before pricing the energy.
- Using the wrong duration: the calculation needs the time the kettle actually heats, not an assumed universal boil time.
- Applying a headline rate to every home: use your own unit rate and, for a multi-rate tariff, the rate for the time of use.
- Treating an example as a typical bill cost: the 5.26p result depends on the example’s 2,400 W rating, five-minute heating time, and the defined Ofgem rate.
- Adding the standing charge to a single use: it is separate from the per-kWh cost of an additional boil.
- Assuming a lower-wattage kettle automatically saves energy: compare energy for the same water amount; wattage by itself does not establish the total used.
- Using a rate from the wrong tariff period: check whether your rate changes by time or has been updated since an older example was published.
What you need for a personal answer
For a practical estimate, note your kettle’s wattage, time one representative heating cycle, and find the unit rate that applies to your tariff at that time. Substitute those figures into the formula. If you use the kettle for different quantities of water or at different tariff times, calculate those cases separately rather than applying one example to all of them.
You do not need to buy a new kettle, a lower-wattage model, or an energy monitor just to calculate an estimate. The rating information, a timed cycle and your tariff rate are enough for the formula. A monitor is an optional way to measure consumption, not a requirement—and wattage alone is not a basis for assuming a replacement will lower the cost.

Where can I find my kettle’s wattage?
Check the kettle’s rating label or the product specifications for its model. Use the actual kettle’s rating where possible, since a different model’s wattage changes the estimate.
Does filling the kettle with more water cost more?
It can: a larger amount of water can take longer to heat, increasing energy use. Time a cycle for the amount you actually boil and calculate that use; there is no single extra cost per cup that applies to every kettle and tariff.
Does a lower-wattage kettle always cost less to boil?
No. A lower wattage uses energy at a slower rate, but it may run longer. Compare the estimated or measured kWh for the same amount of water rather than comparing wattage alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I include the electricity standing charge?
Not when calculating the marginal cost of one additional boil. Multiply the estimated kWh by the applicable unit rate; the daily standing charge is a separate part of the bill.
What if I have an Economy 7 or other multi-rate tariff?
Use the unit rate that applies at the time of the boil. Multi-rate tariffs can have different peak and off-peak prices, so the same estimated energy use may cost different amounts at different times.
The Bottom Line
To estimate a kettle boil, use its wattage, the time it heats and the tariff’s unit rate: convert watts and minutes to kWh, then multiply by the price per kWh. The 2,400 W, five-minute example costs about 5.26p at Ofgem’s Great Britain average Direct Debit rate for 1 October–31 December 2026, but your own result depends on your kettle, water amount, use time and tariff.
