In 2026, the official CurseForge hosting tiers put an RLCraft server at $12, $24, or $36 per month, depending on whether you choose 4GB, 8GB, or 12GB of RAM. The $12 plan is the lowest entry price, but 4GB can be restrictive for a heavily modded world. For most small groups, 8GB is a more practical starting point; larger groups should budget for 12GB or more, or provide comparable hardware when self-hosting.

Those prices cover the hosted subscription only. Your real decision also depends on the exact RLCraft pack, number of concurrent players, world-generation load, view distance, CPU performance, latency, backups, and whether you want to maintain the server yourself.

Official 2026 hosting prices

CurseForge Support lists three monthly hosted-server tiers. The prices below are the published baseline for the service, which CurseForge says is powered by Shockbyte and billed through Tebex.

Monthly tier Included RAM Shared CPU allocation Cost per month Simple 12-month total
Entry 4GB 2 shared CPUs $12 $144
Mid-tier 8GB 3 shared CPUs $24 $288
High-tier 12GB 4 shared CPUs $36 $432

The annual figures are arithmetic based on the listed monthly prices, assuming the rate remains unchanged for 12 consecutive months. They are not a separately published annual plan or ownership-cost study. The official setup workflow includes choosing a plan and a server region, so location and latency are part of the purchase decision even though the listed prices do not vary by region in the supplied tier table.

What the price does and does not tell you

A monthly RAM and CPU number is not a guaranteed player limit. RLCraft is a large Forge modpack, and load changes as players explore new terrain, generate structures, keep chunks loaded, run farms, and add entities. Two servers with the same allocation can perform differently because of processor speed, storage, view distance, Java configuration, region, and the number of active dimensions.

Before paying, confirm the host’s current details for backups, support response, data-center locations, cancellation, and one-click deployment of the matching RLCraft server pack. Those operational features can be more important than a small difference in monthly price.

Use the correct RLCraft release and server pack

For official RLCraft, use the 1.12.2 Forge modpack and its matching server pack. The CurseForge listing identifies version 2.9.3 as the latest release, dated June 27, 2023, and advises Forge 2860 or newer. The client and server must use compatible files; installing a different pack or Forge build can cause missing-mod errors, rejected connections, or a world that behaves differently from the players’ clients.

Do not treat ordinary RLCraft and RLCraft Dregora as interchangeable when planning capacity. The official Dregora page calls for 6–8GB of RAM and says 8GB is recommended for servers. That guidance applies to Dregora’s stated requirements, not automatically to every RLCraft configuration.

How much RAM does an RLCraft server need?

The original RLCraft CurseForge page warns that its default 1GB allocation is not enough and recommends 3–4GB for the client. A server also needs memory for the Java process, loaded chunks, entities, world generation, and the operating system or hosting panel. Consequently, a host’s 4GB tier should be viewed as a minimum experiment for a very small, carefully configured server rather than a universal recommendation.

4GB: lowest-cost starting point

The $12 tier provides 4GB and two shared CPUs. It can make sense for a solo test, a small private world, or a group willing to keep view distance and simultaneous exploration modest. It has little headroom for the spikes that occur when several players travel in different directions and force new terrain to generate. If the server spends time near its memory limit, expect lag, delayed chunk loading, crashes, or the operating system killing the Java process.

8GB: practical small-group target

The $24 tier doubles memory to 8GB and raises the allocation to three shared CPUs. It matches the Dregora page’s recommended server memory and gives a conventional RLCraft server more room for exploration and background tasks. It is not a guarantee of a specific player count: a high view distance, large base, many chunk loaders, or several simultaneous explorers can still overwhelm it.

12GB and above: room for growth

The $36 tier supplies 12GB and four shared CPUs. It is the first official tier that gives a growing group substantial headroom without immediately moving to a custom plan or self-hosted machine. If your players explore continuously, keep multiple dimensions active, or use a demanding world-generation setup, 12GB is a more defensible starting budget than trying to stretch 4GB.

Player-count estimates—and why they are only estimates

A 2026 analysis by FindYourMinecraftServer gives planning estimates of approximately 12GB for five players, 17GB for ten players, and 27GB for twenty players. These figures are not an official RLCraft requirement or a CurseForge capacity guarantee. They can be useful as a conservative budgeting signal, but actual use changes with world-generation activity, render and simulation distance, installed mods, CPU performance, storage, and how far apart players spread out.

The estimates explain why a simple price comparison can be misleading. The $24 plan’s 8GB allocation is below that analysis’s estimate for five players, while the $36 plan’s 12GB sits at the estimate for five. That does not mean five players will always require exactly 12GB; it means a group planning for active exploration should leave more margin than a group standing together in an already generated area.

Translate the estimate into a budget

  • One to a few players: Start by evaluating the 4GB tier only if you can accept conservative settings and monitor performance. An 8GB plan reduces the chance that ordinary exploration immediately becomes a memory problem.
  • A small active group: Budget for 8GB at minimum and consider 12GB if players will explore independently or generate a new world together.
  • Ten or more concurrent players: The 17GB planning estimate is already above the official 12GB tier, so investigate larger custom allocations or self-host hardware with equivalent capacity.
  • Around twenty players: The 27GB estimate points to a substantially larger machine or a carefully managed community server, not an entry-level shared plan.

Hosted server costs beyond the subscription

Region and latency

CurseForge’s setup flow includes region selection. Choose a location close to most players to reduce network delay. A distant region can make combat, block placement, and inventory interactions feel slow even when the server has enough RAM.

Backups

RLCraft worlds represent many hours of progression, and world corruption or an accidental deletion is expensive in time. Verify how backups work before choosing a plan: frequency, retention, restore procedure, and whether backups consume storage or cost extra. Do not assume that a monthly server price automatically includes a recoverable history.

Support and deployment

One-click server-pack deployment can save substantial setup time, but confirm that the available installer targets the correct 1.12.2 pack and Forge build. Ask whether support will troubleshoot modpack-specific errors, Java crashes, and world transfers, or only the host’s control panel and network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Variable charges and cancellation

The published figures are monthly prices. Check the checkout terms for taxes, renewal pricing, billing intervals, storage limits, overage policies, and cancellation timing. CurseForge identifies Tebex as the billing platform, so retain the order confirmation and know where to manage recurring payments.

Can you host RLCraft on your own PC?

Yes. Self-hosting replaces the recurring server subscription with your own hardware, internet connection, electricity, configuration work, backups, and maintenance. It can be economical when you already have a suitable always-on computer and a stable upload connection, but it is not free in the practical sense.

Documented installation path

  1. Download the official RLCraft server pack that matches the client release you intend to run.
  2. Install Forge 1.12.2-14.23.5.2860, the build documented by the RLCraft Wiki installation guide.
  3. Place the server-pack files in a dedicated server directory rather than mixing them with a client installation.
  4. Accept Minecraft’s EULA in the server configuration before starting the server.
  5. Set the Java virtual machine allocation to the documented 4GB example for an initial small-server configuration.
  6. Start the server once, stop it cleanly, and review the generated configuration and log files for missing libraries or mod errors.
  7. Connect locally first, then test remote access, firewall rules, port forwarding, backups, and restart behavior before inviting players.

The 4GB JVM example is a starting configuration, not a capacity promise. A computer with only 4GB of total system memory cannot safely dedicate all of it to Java because the operating system and other services also need memory. Conversely, assigning a very large heap does not fix a slow processor, poor upload bandwidth, or a mod that is generating excessive entities.

Self-hosting costs to account for

  • Hardware: You need enough total RAM, a processor that can handle a heavily modded Java server, and storage with room for the world, backups, and logs.
  • Power: An always-on machine adds electricity use and may require cooling.
  • Bandwidth: Upload capacity and data caps affect how many players can connect and how smoothly they receive world data.
  • Network setup: Port forwarding, firewall rules, dynamic addresses, and router changes become your responsibility.
  • Administration: You must apply updates, monitor logs, schedule restarts, test backups, and recover from corruption or hardware failure.
  • Availability: A home power or internet outage takes the server offline; a hosted service may offer data-center redundancy that a home connection does not.

How to choose a 2026 budget

  1. Identify the pack. Confirm whether you are running official RLCraft 2.9.3 or Dregora, and use the matching 1.12.2 server files.
  2. Count concurrent players. Base the estimate on the number online at busy times, not the total number on a community whitelist.
  3. Describe the workload. Note whether players will explore separately, keep multiple dimensions active, use high view distance, or run farms and chunk loaders.
  4. Choose a memory floor. Treat 4GB as a low-cost test, 8GB as a sensible small-group target, and 12GB as the safer official tier for growth.
  5. Check CPU and region. RLCraft performance depends on more than RAM; compare the shared CPU allocation and select a nearby region.
  6. Confirm operational terms. Verify backups, restore access, support scope, storage, billing, and server-pack deployment before checkout.
  7. Measure and adjust. Watch memory use, tick-time warnings, chunk-generation lag, and crash logs during a real play session. Move up a tier when the workload—not a marketing number—shows that more capacity is needed.

Common failure modes and fixes

The server crashes while players explore

New terrain generation can create short, intense CPU and memory spikes. Reduce view and simulation distance, avoid having every player travel in a different direction at once, pre-generate terrain if your tooling supports it, and move from 4GB to 8GB or 12GB when the logs and monitoring show sustained pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players receive missing-mod or Forge errors

Check that every client uses the same RLCraft release, mod list, configuration files, and Forge family as the server. For official RLCraft, the documented target is 1.12.2 with Forge 2860 or newer. Reinstalling a mismatched server pack can be faster than trying to repair individual files.

The server has memory but still feels laggy

RAM does not compensate for a weak shared CPU, distant region, saturated home upload link, excessive entities, or a mod that blocks the main game thread. Compare tick-time and CPU behavior, move to a closer region, reduce entity-heavy activity, and test with fewer simultaneous explorers before buying more memory.

A world disappears after an update or mistake

Stop making changes, preserve the current files, and restore the newest known-good backup. Test that backups can actually be downloaded and restored; a backup that exists in a panel but cannot be opened is not a recovery plan.

What is the cheapest sensible option?

The lowest published price is $12 per month for 4GB and two shared CPUs. It is the cheapest official entry point, not automatically the cheapest successful setup: repeated crashes, lost worlds, or an early upgrade can cost more time than the $12 difference to the 8GB tier. For Dregora, the official 8GB recommendation makes the $24 plan the more natural starting point. For active groups whose planning assumptions approach five players or more, compare the 12GB tier and larger self-hosted alternatives rather than assuming the entry plan will scale.

No published statistic establishes an average total annual cost of owning or operating an RLCraft server. The defensible 2026 figures are the listed monthly hosting tiers, the documented memory guidance, and the clearly qualified player-count estimates above. Use those numbers to build a capacity budget, then validate it against your actual play style.
