In 2026, a small managed Arma 3 server generally costs about $8 to $25 per month in published plans. Larger memory tiers, more player slots, or heavier mod use move the recurring bill toward $40 or more. Self-hosting can remove the hosting subscription when you already have an always-on computer and suitable internet, but electricity, bandwidth, maintenance, backups, and hardware upgrades still cost money.
The right budget depends less on the slot number than on your mission, AI count, scripts, mods, CPU performance, memory, network location, and operational features. Use the prices below as dated examples, then compare the renewal total and included services at checkout.

For a small group, the practical takeaway is a high-single-digit to mid-$20s monthly budget. A public or heavily modded community should plan on roughly $25–$45 or more based on the published examples, with unusually demanding configurations potentially costing more.

What the advertised tiers actually mean
Basic memory tiers
A 2 GB plan is marketed as a basic-server option. That description does not guarantee a particular player count or frame rate: Arma 3 performance is affected by CPU speed, mission scripting, AI and mod behavior, not memory alone. Treat the smallest tier as a starting point for a light setup rather than a promise that any mission will run well.
Modded and larger setups
The 6 GB tier is positioned for larger or more modded servers, while the 12 GB tier is positioned for advanced servers and all modpacks. Those labels describe the provider’s packaging, not an official Arma requirement. A poorly optimized mission can still lag on a high-memory plan, and a carefully configured small mission may run acceptably with less.

Arma 3’s official guidance says there is no universal technical hard limit on player count. Reasonable maximums depend on the selected scenario, server hardware, and available bandwidth. Consequently, a 20-slot plan is not automatically twice as capable as a 10-slot plan, and a large slot allowance does not ensure that a demanding scenario will support every slot smoothly.

Can you host an Arma 3 server for free?
You can avoid a separate hosting subscription if you already own a computer that can remain online and an internet connection that can handle the traffic. That is not cost-free in the broader sense. You still pay for electricity, consume bandwidth, spend time maintaining the operating system and server, create backups, and may need hardware or storage upgrades.
Self-hosting also makes your home network part of the service. The dedicated-server documentation calls for installing and updating the server with SteamCMD, opening the required TCP and UDP ports, and making the server reachable from the internet. Your router, firewall, and internet provider must therefore permit the required traffic. If inbound connections are blocked or your address changes frequently, friends may be unable to connect even when the server process is running.
When self-hosting is economical
- You already have an always-on computer with adequate single-thread CPU performance and memory.
- Your internet service permits inbound game traffic and provides enough upload bandwidth for the intended group.
- You are comfortable handling updates, mod files, configuration, monitoring, and backups.
- Short outages and occasional troubleshooting are acceptable for your community.
When managed hosting is usually simpler
- You need a server online without leaving a personal computer powered on.
- You prefer a control panel, automated restarts, mod-installation tools, support, or bundled backups.
- Your home connection uses carrier-grade NAT, blocks inbound ports, or has unreliable upload capacity.
- You are running a public community where downtime and recovery work have a larger impact.
What drives the monthly cost?
Player slots and mission workload
Slot count is the most visible pricing control, but it is only a starting point. AI density, view distance, mission scripts, persistence systems, and mod complexity can consume CPU time and memory independently of the number of human players. A 10-player cooperative mission with heavy AI may stress a server more than a lightly scripted mission with more players.

CPU quality and RAM
Providers package RAM in tiers, as the published 2 GB, 6 GB, and 12 GB examples show. Arma 3 also benefits from strong CPU performance, so compare the processor allocation or hardware generation when a host discloses it. Do not select a plan solely because its memory number looks large.
Data-center location and network path
Choose a location near most players. Physical distance and routing affect latency, while available bandwidth and port reachability affect whether players can connect and remain synchronized. A lower headline price in a distant region may produce a worse experience than a slightly more expensive nearby location.
Operations included with the plan
Backups, DDoS protection, FTP or SFTP access, mod installers, automatic updates, support, and scheduled restarts may be bundled or sold as options. Compare what is included before treating two monthly prices as equivalent. A cheap plan that requires separate backup storage can cost more after the first month.

Billing terms and regional checkout
Introductory prices can renew at a higher amount. Currency conversion, tax, data-center surcharges, and billing duration can also change the final charge. The difference between the US-dollar and euro examples in the table illustrates why the checkout total for your country matters more than a headline converted by hand.
How to choose a budget by server type
Two to 10 friends
Compare the cost of running hardware you already own with a managed 10-slot plan. The published examples establish both a recurring high-single-digit entry point and a roughly mid-teens 30-day option. For a small, lightly modded group, prioritize reliable connectivity, restart controls, and an easy way to install the exact mods your missions use.
A small modded unit
Start by comparing plans around the 6 GB tier, then examine CPU allocation, storage, backup policy, and mod workflow. Ask whether the panel can upload, update, and remove a mod set without rebuilding the server. Memory is a capacity input, not a substitute for a fast processor or a well-optimized mission.

A public or heavily modded community
Budget in the range indicated by the larger published examples and evaluate more than slots. Confirm the data-center region, DDoS protection, backup retention, support response, automatic updates, and the recurring price after any promotion. Keep room in the budget for growth: adding slots, memory, or a second backup destination can raise the bill.

Dedicated-server setup requirements
Bohemia Interactive’s dedicated-server documentation establishes the core workflow. The exact labels and files can vary with your operating system and server build, so use the current documentation for the version you install.
- Install SteamCMD. Use SteamCMD to download the dedicated-server files and to apply future updates.
- Install the server build. Select the Arma 3 dedicated-server application in SteamCMD and place its files in a directory with enough storage for the base installation, mods, logs, and backups.
- Configure startup parameters. The startup-parameter reference documents the dedicated-server executable and the parameter used to select the listening port. Keep your launch options in a repeatable script or service definition so updates do not erase them.
- Set network rules. Open the required TCP and UDP ports in the host firewall and router, then ensure the server is reachable from the public internet. Use the port list in the current dedicated-server documentation rather than copying a rule intended for another game.
- Apply server configuration. Use the basic configuration settings for bandwidth and message rates, and tune them alongside mission complexity. The documentation notes that optimization choices affect bandwidth and lag.
- Test with the real mission and mod set. Have representative players connect, monitor behavior under AI and script load, and adjust before advertising a larger capacity.
- Automate maintenance. Schedule updates, restarts, log rotation, and backups. Keep a known-good copy of configuration files so you can recover after a failed mod update.
Checks to perform before paying
- Write down the recurring renewal price separately from any first-month promotion.
- Confirm whether the quoted amount is monthly, 30 days, or another billing period.
- Check the data-center country, tax treatment, currency conversion, and any location surcharge.
- Verify the number of slots, RAM allocation, CPU details, storage, and whether resources are shared or dedicated when disclosed.
- List included backups, backup retention, DDoS protection, mod tools, file access, support hours, and automatic update features.
- Ask how to change slots or RAM later and whether resizing causes downtime.
- Check cancellation and data-export procedures so you can retrieve missions, configurations, and backups.
Diagnosing an underperforming server
Players can connect but experience lag
Check mission scripts, AI count, view distance, mod behavior, CPU saturation, and bandwidth settings before buying more slots. Arma’s official capacity guidance ties reasonable player counts to the scenario, hardware, and bandwidth, so reducing workload may help more than increasing the slot allowance.
The server is unreachable
Verify that the dedicated process is running, the configured port matches the firewall and router rules, and the internet connection permits inbound traffic. A server that works on the local network can still be inaccessible from outside if port forwarding or provider-level restrictions are present.
The bill is higher than expected
Compare the renewal line with the promotional price, then review tax, currency conversion, location fees, extra backups, DDoS options, and longer or shorter billing periods. Regional pages can show different currencies for what appears to be the same slot count.

The dedicated-server documentation describes obtaining the server through SteamCMD, but the pricing information does not establish a universal licensing requirement for every hosting arrangement. Before launching a public server, check Bohemia Interactive’s current licensing terms and the host’s policy for dedicated-server installations.
