Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Terraria servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
In 2026, a Terraria server can cost nothing with Host & Play or an existing computer, while most managed servers cost about $5–$25 per month. Many small vanilla worlds fit a $4.99–$8 monthly plan; large or heavily modded worlds generally need 4–6 GB of RAM and a higher tier. You must buy the Terraria game separately.
The three ways to run a Terraria server
Your hosting bill depends first on where the server process runs. Terraria offers a free session-based option, you can operate a dedicated server on hardware you already own, or you can rent a managed instance from a hosting company.

Host & Play: no hosting charge
Host & Play uses one player’s normal game session. The game owner starts the world and other players join through that session, so the hosting cost is $0. The host’s computer and game session must remain available while everyone is playing, and some networks require additional multiplayer or router configuration. This is the simplest choice for occasional co-op rather than a world that should be online continuously. The Official Terraria Wiki distinguishes this arrangement from a dedicated server because a dedicated server can continue running without a particular player staying connected.
Self-hosted dedicated server
If you already have a suitable computer or virtual private server, the incremental hosting charge can also be $0. You still pay for electricity, internet service and any VPS rental, but there is no separate managed-hosting subscription. A dedicated process runs independently of a player’s game client, making it practical for a persistent world.

Self-hosting shifts operational work to you: installing the server software, opening the network port, applying updates, scheduling backups, monitoring uptime and recovering the world if the machine fails. A residential connection may need router port forwarding, and you should consider upload capacity and whether your internet provider allows inbound connections.
Managed Terraria hosting
A managed host runs the server in a data center and supplies a control panel, networking and varying levels of support. A 2026 market guide from Supercraft Host places most managed Terraria servers between $5 and $25 per month. GamezServers publishes concrete examples of $4.99 per month for 2 GB, $9.99 for 4 GB and $14.99 for 6 GB. These are provider examples, not a universal price list; renewal rates, taxes, currency conversion and promotional terms can change the amount charged.
2026 price bands and what they include
| Option | Typical 2026 cost | Good fit | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host & Play | $0 hosting | Short co-op sessions with friends | The host’s game session and computer must be available; networking can be more complicated. |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | $0 incremental cost with an existing suitable machine; electricity and internet are extra | Technical users who want full control and already own hardware or a VPS | You handle port forwarding, updates, backups, security and uptime. |
| Budget managed host | About $4–$8 per month | Roughly 2–8 players on a vanilla small or medium world | Shared resources and fewer premium support features are common market characteristics. |
| Standard managed host | About $8–$15 per month | About 8–16 players, a large world or light mods | You pay more for RAM and performance headroom. |
| Performance or modded host | About $15–$25 per month | Calamity, Thorium, large tModLoader collections or a public server | The higher price buys memory, CPU headroom, backups and support; check the renewal price. |
Supercraft Host supplied the three market bands above in its 2026 guide. GamezServers’ published examples provide a useful way to translate memory into a monthly bill, but neither provider’s price should be treated as the market-wide standard.
How much RAM does a Terraria server need?
Memory is usually a better sizing signal than a simple player count. The Official Terraria Wiki lists 500 MB of free RAM for a small world and notes that the default maximum is 16 players, although that limit can be changed. Mods, world size, simultaneous activity and the server software’s overhead can make a larger allocation necessary.
| Workload | Practical starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small vanilla world and a few friends | About 2 GB | Leaves room above the wiki’s 500 MB small-world baseline for the operating system and normal activity. |
| Large vanilla world or a group approaching the default 16-player limit | About 4 GB | Provides additional headroom for world activity and concurrent connections. |
| Lightly modded world | About 4 GB | Mod loaders and content consume memory beyond a vanilla process. |
| Calamity, Thorium or a large tModLoader list | About 4–6 GB or more | Heavier content and scripts need additional memory; the exact requirement depends on the mod collection. |
These are budgeting targets, not a guarantee for every configuration. Watch actual memory use after installing the intended mods. If the process approaches its limit, players may see lag, disconnects or failed world loads; moving to the next RAM tier is generally safer than trying to compensate with player-slot settings alone.
What makes one Terraria server cost more than another?
RAM and CPU allocation
Higher memory plans cost more because they reserve more capacity for the server process. CPU speed and the provider’s policy on shared versus dedicated cores also affect responsiveness, especially when many entities or scripted mods are active. Two plans with the same advertised RAM can perform differently if their CPU resources and oversubscription policies differ.

- Classic Terraria gameplay now with console specific control system, and a friendly crafting/item interface.
- Online multiplayer with you to 8 players! Split-screen multiplayer 2-4 players.
- New Enemies and Final Boss, as well as Ultimate Weapons, new Armors and Pets never seen before!
- Hundreds of weapons, armor and other items to craft, with character advancement.
- Over 25 different block types to build whatever you imagine!
World size and activity
A large world stores more terrain and can create more work during exploration, saving and loading. Frequent events, farms and busy bases can increase the workload even when the player count is modest.
Mods and mod loaders
Every additional mod can add assets, scripts or background processing. A lightly modded server may fit a standard plan, while a large tModLoader collection or content-heavy pack such as Calamity should be budgeted in the performance range. Confirm that the host supports the exact Terraria and tModLoader versions your group uses.
Uptime, backups and support
A low-cost plan may provide only basic hardware and a control panel. Automatic off-site backups, one-click restores, DDoS protection, support response times and a service-level commitment can justify a higher recurring price when the world is important. Check how many backup copies are retained and whether restoring one incurs a fee.
Billing region and renewal terms
A displayed monthly figure may exclude sales tax, VAT, payment fees or currency conversion. Introductory discounts can also expire. Compare the regular renewal price, billing interval and cancellation policy rather than evaluating only the first invoice. HostPanel’s published reference of £2.50 per GB of RAM per month, with prices checked in August 2026, illustrates why regional currency and memory allocation must be considered separately.
Cost examples for common groups
Four-player vanilla co-op
For a small group using a vanilla world, Host & Play is free if everyone accepts session-based availability. A budget managed plan is the convenient persistent alternative. Using GamezServers’ 2 GB example, $4.99 divided among four players is about $1.25 per person per month before tax and currency conversion.
Eight to 16 players with a large world
A standard plan with around 4 GB gives more headroom for a large world and a group approaching Terraria’s default 16-player setting. The GamezServers 4 GB example costs $9.99 monthly, or about $2.50 each when eight players share it. Splitting the bill among fewer players raises the individual cost.

Modded community server
For Calamity, Thorium or a large tModLoader collection, plan around 4–6 GB or more and look in the performance tier. The 6 GB GamezServers example is $14.99 per month. Four regular players would pay about $3.75 each before tax and currency conversion. Public communities may spend toward the $15–$25 market range to obtain stronger CPU resources, backups and support rather than buying memory alone.

Self-hosting requirements and setup checklist
The Official Terraria Wiki identifies TCP port 7777 as the server default. A residential setup commonly requires forwarding that port from the router to the computer running the server. Change the port only if another service already uses it or your network design requires a different value.
- Choose an always-on machine. Confirm that it has enough free RAM for the world and mods, reliable storage and an operating system you can maintain.
- Install the dedicated server files. Keep the server version aligned with the clients and with any mod loader or content pack you plan to use.
- Create or select the world. Decide world size and difficulty, then set the maximum player count appropriate for your group. The default maximum is 16 and can be changed.
- Configure networking. Allow the server through the machine’s firewall and forward TCP port 7777 on the router when players connect from outside your home network.
- Test an external connection. Have a friend join from another network before announcing the address. This catches forwarding, firewall and carrier-grade NAT problems early.
- Automate maintenance. Schedule world backups, apply Terraria and mod updates during a maintenance window, and keep at least one backup away from the server machine.
- Monitor and review. Check memory use, crashes and connection quality during a normal session. Upgrade hardware or move to a managed plan if reliability becomes more work than the subscription would cost.
Managed-host buying checklist
- Memory: Select the RAM tier for your world and mod list, not merely the advertised player-slot number.
- Software support: Verify the exact Terraria version, tModLoader availability and whether you can upload your own mod files and configurations.
- Backups: Confirm frequency, retention, storage location and one-click restore procedures.
- Performance: Ask whether CPU cores are shared, throttled or dedicated, and where the data center is located relative to players.
- Access: Check for file management, console access, scheduled tasks and log downloads so you can troubleshoot without waiting for support.
- Pricing: Record the normal renewal rate, billing currency, tax treatment, setup fees and cancellation deadline.
- Support: Read the support hours and expected response channel before relying on the server for a community event.
Do you need to buy Terraria as well?
Yes. Server hosting and the game client are separate purchases. Valve’s current Steam listing shows Terraria at $9.99 for a single copy and $29.99 for a four-pack. Those are game prices, not server fees, and they can vary by region, tax and future store changes. Each player needs an eligible Terraria copy to connect.
Choosing the cheapest sensible option
Use Host & Play when sessions are occasional and everyone can work around the host’s availability. Self-host a dedicated process when you already own an always-on machine and are comfortable maintaining networking and backups. Choose a budget managed plan for a persistent vanilla world with a small group. Move to a standard plan when the world is large or the group is approaching 16 players. Choose a performance or modded tier when a substantial tModLoader collection, public access or stronger support requirements make reliability more important than the lowest monthly bill.
Before paying, write down the world size, expected peak players, complete mod list, desired uptime and backup policy. Match those requirements to RAM and support first, then compare the renewal-inclusive total. That process prevents an apparently cheap plan from becoming expensive after an upgrade, tax or expired promotion.
