A new racing shell can cost anywhere from roughly £3,600 for an entry club-tier single to more than £26,000 for a premium eight in the dated seller schedules reviewed here. Other current examples put singles at $7,500–$8,750, AU$9,960, or £13,500–£18,000, depending on boat class, construction, customization and region. These are regional seller prices, not a universal global range.
The number that matters is the cost of a complete, correctly sized and delivered boat. VAT or sales tax, freight, insurance, riggers, fittings, options and oars can change the final bill substantially. Treat every headline figure below as a dated example and request a current quote for the exact specification you need.
Current new-shell prices by seller and configuration
The following figures were checked on October 11, 2026, except where a seller identifies an earlier price-list date. Currencies, tax treatment and delivery terms differ, so the rows should not be converted into a single worldwide average.

Carl Douglas explicitly cautions that “Almost every one of our boats is unique and none are ‘ordinary’, so there is no ‘standard’ price list.” That is a useful warning for custom builders: a guide price is a starting point, not a guaranteed invoice.

Why the same-looking shell can have a very different price
Boat class and crew size
A 1x single, 2x double, pair, four and eight are separate hulls with different amounts of material, labor, hardware and transport risk. Compare the same class before judging one quote against another. In Swift’s March 2026 schedule, singles, doubles and the Carbon Pro eight occupy different price bands. Race1’s Olympic-class eight is AU$38,360, while its Olympic-class single is AU$9,960; the difference reflects the boat, not simply a larger version of the same product.
Construction tier, material and stated weight
Manufacturers often offer several construction levels. Swift lists Club B, Club A, Elite Plus and Carbon Pro. Its May 2026 order document, version 2.16A, says a Club A single is approximately 2 kg heavier than an Elite Plus single. That is a manufacturer specification for those tiers, not a universal promise that every lighter shell will be faster or more durable.
Carbon, honeycomb and composite descriptions also need context. A carbon label does not by itself establish speed, stiffness or longevity. Ask for the shell’s stated weight, construction method, warranty and intended use, then compare like with like.

Riggers and included fittings
Riggers can move a quote by thousands. Swift’s listed prices include specified hard-anodised aluminium rigger choices, while carbon wings and quick-release hardware are options. Carl Douglas says its boats are supplied ready to race with AeRoWing riggers and fittings unless otherwise specified. Van Dusen’s Advantage double is listed at $24,500 with carbon-fiber wing riggers but $18,000 without them, with heavyweight versions adding another $1,000. Always ask whether the displayed figure includes both riggers and the fittings needed to row the boat.
Finish and customization
Wood, Kevlar, carbon and decorative finishes can sit in different price tiers. Carl Douglas lists CD-X at £13,500, a Custom single at £15,000 and special veneer choices at £16,000–£18,000, before UK VAT and ex-works delivery. Its guide also prices options such as section joints, topstays, SpeedCoach wiring, hand grips, bottle pockets, deck stripes and lettering separately. A visually minor change may require extra labor, molds or finishing time.
Hull size and rower weight range
Correct fit is a buying requirement, not an optional upgrade. Van Dusen explains that hull sizes are based on weight class and intended rower ranges. A cheaper shell that does not match the crew’s weight can be a poor purchase, even if its construction specification looks attractive. Give the builder each rower’s weight, height and experience, and ask which hull size and cockpit setup it recommends.

Tax, freight, delivery and price basis
Price labels use different starting points. Swift’s list is ex-warehouse and excludes VAT. Carl Douglas quotes ex-works prices from Chertsey and states UK VAT at 20%; shipping varies. Evergreen adds Washington sales tax and shipping where applicable. Race1 includes Australian GST but excludes delivery. Freight for a long, fragile shell may also involve insurance, handling, crating, customs or dealer charges. A fair comparison adds these items consistently to every quote.
Equipment that is, and is not, in the box
Evergreen describes its ready-to-row shell price as including a carbon seat, fin and bow ball, but not oars. Oars are a separate equipment budget, and the appropriate choice depends on sculling or sweep rowing and the rower’s needs. Other sellers may include different seats, shoes, foot stretchers, fins or rigging hardware. Request an itemized inclusion list rather than assuming “ready to row” means the same thing everywhere.
How to compare quotes without being misled
- Specify the boat first. State single, pair, double, four or eight; sculling or sweep configuration; intended racing level; and the crew’s combined and individual weights.
- Record the construction tier. Capture the material, lay-up or honeycomb description, quoted hull weight and any manufacturer tier name. Do not compare a club construction with a premium carbon build as if they were equivalent.
- List every hardware component. Ask whether seats, shoes, foot stretchers, fins, bow balls, riggers, quick releases, topstays and wiring are included. Note the rigger material and wing or conventional design.
- Separate options from the base boat. Request individual prices for veneer or paint, lettering, deck stripes, bottle pockets, hand grips, section joints and electronic wiring. This shows which differences are essential and which are cosmetic or convenience upgrades.
- Normalize the price basis. Have the seller state currency, quote date, tax rate, shipping point, freight, insurance, customs, delivery, assembly and any dealer or handling fee. “Ex-works,” “ex-warehouse,” “GST included” and “delivery excluded” are not interchangeable.
- Ask for the delivered total. The final document should show the hull, riggers, fittings, options, tax and transport as separate lines. Confirm the warranty, lead time, damage inspection procedure and service contact before paying a deposit.
Budget for the purchase beyond the hull
The shell is only one part of a racing setup. Oars may be excluded, as Evergreen states, and can represent a significant additional purchase. Transport can require a specialist carrier, protective supports and insurance because a racing shell is long and vulnerable to point loading. If a boat arrives unrigged, include local labor for assembly and initial setup. Clubs should also budget for storage racks, covers and a maintenance plan, while individual owners may need a trailer or compatible roof-transport system.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Ask whether the quoted price covers the exact seat and foot-stretcher adjustment range your rower needs. Replacing an unsuitable component after delivery can cost more than specifying it at build time. For a crew boat, verify that all stations use the intended rigger geometry and that replacement parts are available in your region.

Used listings provide context but should not be mistaken for new-boat prices. RowingAdverts reports averages from 1,051 boat listings posted during the preceding two years. Its page, checked in 2026, shows an average asking price of £4,875 for 643 single-scull listings and £12,222 for 110 eights. The figures are asking prices; actual sale prices may differ, and the page is a UK classified-market snapshot.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing currencies without tax and freight: convert only after every quote uses the same delivered-cost basis.
- Assuming carbon means faster: compare measured weight, design, fit and warranty; price alone does not prove a performance advantage.
- Ignoring crew weight: request the builder’s recommended hull size and confirm the range in writing.
- Overlooking riggers: a low base price may omit carbon wings, quick releases or even all riggers.
- Treating a guide as a fixed price: custom finishes and options can change the invoice, particularly on one-off wooden or composite boats.
- Forgetting oars and delivery: include them in the total equipment budget before deciding what you can afford.
- Using used averages as a new-shell benchmark: asking prices from classified adverts are not verified transactions and cover different boats.
What price level makes sense for your use?
An entry club-tier single can be appropriate when durability, shared use and a controlled budget matter more than minimum weight. A higher construction tier may make sense for a competitive athlete who has confirmed the fit and understands the maintenance and transport requirements. Custom work is justified when hull sizing, crew geometry, finish or specialized hardware cannot be met by a stock configuration, but every option should be priced separately.
For doubles, pairs and larger boats, divide the delivered quote by the number of rowers only as a budgeting aid; the boat remains a single complex asset with shared maintenance and transport needs. A club should also compare replacement-part availability and service coverage, not just the initial invoice.
Bottom line
Use the published figures as dated regional reference points: roughly £3,600–£6,650 for Swift’s listed singles, £13,500–£18,000 for Carl Douglas singles, $7,500–$8,750 for the cited Evergreen singles, AU$9,960 for Race1’s Olympic-class single and substantially more for larger or custom boats. The decisive number is the fully specified, correctly sized shell after tax, freight, riggers, options and equipment are added. Get that itemized quote before comparing brands, materials or prices.
